Big Bear Doo Dah Parade in Fawnskin
is world’s shortest, most fun parade
The world famous
Big Bear
Doo Dah Parade
in Fawnskin will
debut for 2017 at 10
a.m. on Saturday,
July 22. Billed as
the world’s shortest
parade, the Big
Bear Doo Dah Parade
in Fawnskin
is long on laughs
and full of family
fun. A staple of the
annual Big Bear
Old Miners Association
Old Miners
Days events,
the Big Bear Doo
Dah Parade in
Fawnskin is not to
be missed. The parade
is sponsored
by Old Miners; the
Fawnskin Chamber
of Commerce,
the North Shore
Improvement Association
and the
Big Bear Moose
Lodge.
Feel like getting
in on the fun.
What is the Big
Bear Doo Dah Parade
in Fawnskin?
Let’s start at the
beginning.
Sources claim
that in a July 13,
1865 editorial, a
newspaper editor
by the name
of Horace Greeley
popularized the
phrase, “Go West,
young man…”
The editorial was
written to encourage
Civil War
veterans to take
advantage of the
Homestead Act
and colonize the
western lands.
The editorial
read, “Washington
is not a place
to live in. The
rents are high, the
food is bad, the
dust is disgusting
and the morals
are deplorable. Go
West, young man,
go West and grow
up with the country.”
The advice
seems as apt today
as it was then
as there is again
a blaring hue and
cry to disengage
from our Nation’s
capital for many of
the same reasons.
Many took that
advice. Thousands
traveled to the
promised lands of
the thinly populated
West.
Countless souls
were lured to the
west by greed and
the promise of untold
riches, for gold
had been discovered
in California.
The San Bernardino
Mountains,
and the Bear
and Holcomb valleys
in particular,
filled with prospectors.
Belleville,
in Holcomb Valley,
soon was the largest
town in San
Bernardino County.
The mines soon
petered and the
gold settlements
became ghost
towns.
The Big Bear
Old Miners Association
continues
to pay homage to
that time with a
variety of events
aimed at keeping
the memory of the
gold mining days
alive. One event is
the Big Bear Doo
Dah Parade in
Fawnskin.
Nonsense and
bizarre hilarity
best describes
the Big Bear Doo
Dah Parade. Participants
dress up
as “dairy queens”
in cow suits, men
wear nun outfits,
knights of
the roundtable
appear, cowboys,
polka tenors and
a barrage of other
inventively wacky
ensembles such as
senior citizens doing
choreographed
routines with walkers.
One year the
“Dolly Llama” even
showed up: a llama
wittily named
Dolly. Be sure to get
there early to claim
your spot because
the parade is only
three blocks long
and lasts about an
hour.
The judges’
viewing booth is
in front of the Big
Bear Moose Lodge.
Afterward there
is a festival on the
grounds of the
Big Bear Moose
Lodge, which is
located right in the
heart of the small
hamlet.
Bear Valley Community Healthcare District
providing cutting edge mammography machine
The Bear Valley Community
Healthcare District
has taken a giant step in
providing cutting edge technology
to residents with
the addition of a Hologic
Mammography Machine at
the hospital. The District
has purchased a Genius
3D MAMMOGRAPHY
unit, developed by Hologic,
Inc., a worldwide leader
in Women’s Health. Genius
exams are clinically proven
to significantly increase
the detection of breast cancers,
while simultaneously
decreasing the number of
women asked to return for
additional testing.
Community Market
The Genius 3D Mammography
Unit at the Bear
Valley Community Healthcare
District uses 3D technology
to scan for irregularities
in breast tissue. In
conventional 2D mammography,
overlapping tissue
is a leading reason why
small breast cancers may
be missed and normal tissue
may appear abnormal,
leading to unnecessary callbacks.
A Genius exam includes
a three-dimensional
method of imaging that can
greatly reduce the tissue
overlap effect.
The Hologic Mammography
Machine is transforming
breast cancer screening
and diagnosis to ensure radiologists
can find even the
most invasive cancers at the
earliest stage possible.
Large clinical studies in
the U.S. and Europe have
demonstrated the positive
benefits of a Genius exam.
The largest study to date
on breast cancer screening
using the Genius exam was
published in the June 25,
2014 issue of the Journal of
the American Medical Association.
Findings include:
A 41 percent increase in
the detection of invasive
breast cancers.
A 29 percent increase in
the detection of all breast
cancers.
A 15 percent decrease in
women recalled for additional
imaging.
Bear Valley Community
Healthcare District is committed
to the fight against
breast cancer. In offering the
Genius exam, its radiology
department provides a more
accurate tool for breast cancer
screening. The Genius
is now in operation at Bear
Valley Community Healthcare
District. Patients need
to check with their insur-
Eliza Tibbets, was an
and universal suffrage before
heading west. As a leader
bringing the citrus industry
to Redlands, she successfully
cultivated the area’s first two
Washington naval orange
trees. Eliza Tibbets was also
a spiritualist and frequently
hosted séances.
Petterson is a California
Chautauqua Meetings…
In the late 19th and early
20th centuries, Chautauqua
was an adult educational
movement bringing entertainment
and culture for the
community. A tent would
go up and speakers, teachers,
musicians, entertainers,
preachers and specialists of
the day would present programs.
After several days,
the Chautauqua would fold
its tents and move on.
By the mid-1920s, when
circuit Chautauquas were at
their peak, they appeared in
over 10,000 communities to
audiences of more than 45
million; by about 1940 they
had run their course.
Former U.S. President
Theodore Roosevelt was
quoted as saying that Chautauqua
is “the most American
thing in America.”
Relay for Life Big Bear is Sat., August 19
and 20 in Veterans Park in Big Bear Lake
Where to Eat
Relay for Life is a community
based fundraising
event of the American Cancer
Society. Each year, more
than 5,000 Relay for Life
events take place in over 20
countries.
To donate, visit www.relayforlife.org/bigbearca.
Events are held in local
communities, campus
universities and in virtual
worlds. As the American
Cancer Society’s most successful
fundraiser and the
organization’s signature
event, the mission of Relay
for Life is to raise funds to
improve cancer survival, decrease
the incidence of cancer,
and improve the quality
of life for cancer patients
and their caretakers.
A Relay for Life event is
organized under a volunteer
Relay Committee and
implemented by volunteers.
It is often organized as a
multi-day public gathering,
spanning all day and night
in a large outdoor space and
many people bring tents and
camp out around the walking
tracks. Currently, almost
4 million people take part in
Relay events in over 5,000
communities in the United
States.
It is estimated that Relay
for Life events have raised
around $5 billion. The first
team to raise over $1 million
was the Rosebud Miners.
The largest virtual fundraising
event is Relay for Life
of Second Life, which has
raised more than $2,000,000
since 2005.
