MESSAGE TO THE HERD
The Month of July just came to a close and a few short weeks ago the nation celebrated Independence
Day. The Chips celebrated in our traditional way by hosting the clubs annual 4th of July free 5 Mile
Race. Thanks to the efforts of RD George Parrot, and club volunteers we continued the tradition of
keeping the race free of charge. In addition, the club raised money for WEAVE and the American River
Parkway Foundation. The last few months we have seen some significant club happenings, from Andrew
Burrs AG World Record in the 10 Miler, while visiting his Grandparents in New York, to the clubs new
partnership with Science in Sport from, the UK.
As a first term High Dunger, I have learned a lot. One thing I have
learned is how big the clubs presence in the Sacramento running
scene is. From the five classic races we host and sponsor, Jed Smith
Ultras, Free 4th of July 5 Mile Race, Susan B Anthony 5k, Buffalo
Stampede, Willow Hills Cross Country Runs, to the clubs presence
at numerous other races and events. When a local major
race needs last minute assistance, the Buffalo Chips is where they
turn first. No other club in Sacramento has the ability to pull it off.
None of this is
possible without the support of our membership. You, the members,
have taken the time out of your lives to volunteer at races and put
the clubs best foot forward to the Sacramento Running Public.
Thanks for being a member of the Buffalo Chips!
COACH’S CORNER
02
By Training Coordinator Teddy Morris
A Symphony In C-I-M
In composing a training plan for the 2017 edition of the California International
Marathon, I took notes from last year’s schedule and adapted it to the
time-frame of this year’s training season in order to achieve the best possible
outcome for the members who follow the plan with a consistent level of participation
during the upcoming training period. In fact, I even threw in an extra
week of training into the typical 16-week plan to give everyone that added
measure of confidence that they will indeed be successful in reaching their
race goal for the marathon on Sunday, December 3rd.!
As a prelude to the official start of the training period on August 7th, it is my
suggestion that hopeful marathoners will have a good running base of being able to run 12-13 miles
confidently, as the mile increments go up from that point, and have an overall weekly mileage total of
around 25-30 miles per week to begin the training period. Since I know that our members have a wide
range of time availability, with regards to their personal training opportunities, I have set the minimum
number of days for training at 4 per week–with the recommendation that more training days per week
are advantageous to the overall outcome of race day goals. Therefore, a participant can set their own
tempo in deciding what time and resources they can devote to following this training plan based on
their personal real-life situation.
Since I realize that many participants wanted to sign-up for the Buffalo Stampede 10-Miler in September
and the Urban Cow Half-Marathon in October, I have included those two races within the official
schedule for this year’s training period.
When looking over the entire training plan, you will notice that the weeks are arranged so that there
is a long run one weekend, than a shorter run the next weekend, which is then followed up by another
longer run the week after that one. In musical terms, this would be described as a “crescendo” and
“decrescendo” in a particular passage. The same can be said for the weekly long run goals during this
running plan. Each week, we will slightly increase the long runs we attempt, then go back a few miles
the following week, but come back even longer the week after the lower mileage run. This slow but
sure progression will help our participants add training endurance to their weekly totals so that they
will be physically and mentally ready for the requirements of the marathon on race day. It will all come
together as one hard-fought and self-satisfying orchestration of the time and energy they put into preparing
to reach that finish line!
So, if you have signed-up for the California International Marathon this year, and are laying out your
plans to train for the race, look over the “16(+1)-Week Marathon Training Plan” that is listed on the
Buffalo Chips Running Club website and, even better, I encourage you to come out and join our enthusiastic
ensemble as we create beautiful marathon music together! Bravo!

May I Rant Please?
By Micah Ward
Take off your running shoes and put on your boots, your steel toed construction boots if you have
them. I’m going to step on toes here. As Mel Gibson said in Braveheart, “I’ve come to pick a fight.”
Several years ago I was running in the hot and humid monstrosity that is summer in Savannah, GA.
It was my lunch break so I was getting in a sweltering 4 miles instead of doing laps around the pizza
buffet. A car slowed down from behind and I saw that it was a doctor who I occasionally encountered
at work. He said I should be going to the YMCA with him to work out on the elliptical. I didn’t talk to
him too long as he drove along beside me, but the gist of it is that he is a typical know-it-all who thinks
running will destroy my knees and I’ll get a better workout on the elliptical. I tried to tell him that I
was training for an upcoming race and races aren’t run on ellipticals. But he still insisted that I would
get a better workout. I waved him off so I could run on in peace but what I should have said was, “It
ain’t about the workout, it’s about the run!”
I RUN. Plain and simple. I don’t elliptical. I run outdoors to feel the sun and the wind, to power up the
hills and float back down, to feel the rain, to sweat out the hot summer days and endure through the

challenge of a cold winter day. I run streets, dirt roads, beaches and trails. As George Sheehan said,” I
run to meet the animal in me”.
06
I RACE. I race against strangers at races; I race against friends and acquaintances at races. I race against
my self at races. Every time I head out the door it is a competition against my self and what I will settle
for in my running. That doesn’t mean that every run is fast and hard but every run is a victory over all
those reasons why I could skip that run.
I would run if there were no races. I would run if there were no health benefits. I run because it feels
right to run and doesn’t feel right not to run. If you are a runner you understand, if you are an ellipticaler
you don’t.
I do go to the gym on a fairly regular basis. I do the pushups, the situps, I work out with weights and
I love kettle bells. I even attend yoga classes, and all of that supports my running. But, I don’t “do cardio”….I
RUN. I try hard not to be judgmental walking through the gym but haven’t those people on
the stair master machines tried any of the local mountain trails? Do those people on the treadmills
watching television really think that is more interesting than the scenery in local parks, bicycle or single
track trails or even a quiet residential neighborhood? I know there are situations where someone may
be forced to a treadmill due to childcare issues, physical limitations or time constraints that rule out a
drive to a trail head. But I see the same ones on the same machines every time I go to the gym! What
is wrong with a run on the nearest sidewalks outside in the fresh air?
I’ve run in the mountains and caught my toe on rocks a couple of times and left skin on the trail. When
I get back to my truck I take pictures of my bloody knees and send to my trail running daughters and
sons-in-law. I brag about getting “good blood” on that day’s run. Does anyone ever get good blood on
an elliptical? And another thing….how do you run with your dog on a treadmill?
I take Bella the Wonderdog to the trails. We have a leash that attaches to a harness around her chest
on one end and a loop around my waist on the other. Bella the Wonderdog actually pulls me on the up
hills. She also pulls me forward when my toe catches a rock but that is ok. Bella the Wonderdog thinks
the blood is cool. I think running with Bella the Wonderdog is much cooler than watching Oprah from
a treadmill.
Some may think I sound elitist. No, I’m just an old, slow, plodding runner who believes that running, like
football and baseball, should be done outside. Even in the heat and humidity of Savannah and even in
the thin air and hills of Colorado or the Sierra Nevadas.
So if it’s just about the workout for you then elliptical all you want or run that treadmill while you
watch some talk show on the tube. But I’m going outside to play.
Alright, y’all can take off your boots now.

WESTERN STATES
16
Dispatch from the WSER 100
By Sarah Larson
This year’s Western States Endurance Run was a battle against the elements. Squaw Valley was still covered in
snow and slush after a long winter, but the California summer heat and sun were there with vengeance. By the
time runners reached Devil’s Thumb aid station (run by Buffalo Chips volunteers), they had been through slushy
snow, swampy conditions in the bottom of the canyons, and brutal heat along the canyon ridge. And to reach
the Devil’s Thumb, they had to climb 1,500 feet up El Dorado Canyon.
Luckily, the WSER runners had the volunteers at the Devil’s Thumb Aid station to help them. Many of the
Devil’s Thumb aid station volunteers have run Western States in prior years. They are full of encouragement,
knowledge, and advice. They shared their experience and gave the runners the motivation they needed to keep
moving. And the rest of the volunteers (myself included!) were there with anything else the runners could need
– every food imaginable, ice baths, popsicles, etc.
The real drama of the day came as we approached the cutoff time for the aid station. Several runners were
having trouble making it out of El Dorado canyon. The tough course was catching up to them, and there were
runners sick and cramping on the trail. I hiked down with several other intrepid volunteers. We each assisted
runners out of the canyon. My father and I helped a runner from Minnesota who was struggling with the heat
and cramping so badly she couldn’t walk. We encouraged her to walk, made sure she drank water and electrolytes,
and even carried her piggy-back up the mountain. It took a couple of hours to get her from the bottom of
the canyon up to Devil’s Thumb, where other volunteers made sure she got to her crew.
Some people might see that and think they would never run an ultramarathon. But for me, it was an inspiration.
To see someone work as hard as that runner did inspired me to push myself, too. I was also inspired by all
of the Devil’s Thumb volunteers who shared their ultra experiences. They were enthusiastic about giving me
advice on how to train, fuel, and mentally get through an ultra. I am grateful for their guidance, which helped me
to finish my first ultra run this weekend. Ultra running is a real community – helping each other and helping the
runners out at WSER – and I’m happy to be part of it.
