HAPPENINGS THAILAND PHUKET / KRABI SPOTLIGHT Walking a Living Museum Phuket Old Town never ceases to amaze people appreciative of history and architecture. The two main streets that used to be the commercial hub where families and merchants from the Malay Peninsula settled remain actual homes for many Phuket natives. After a big breakfast, take the time to stroll along remembrances from the past 150 years. Get a sense of how merchants from Thailand’s neighbouring countries as well as those from mainland China made their homes. Start at the beginning of Phang Nga Road, visit Phuket’s oldest shrine and cut through to Talang Road and admire the controlled chaos of ‘Tawat Yon,’ an old motorcycle repair shop where the faded walls and ceiling create nostalgia like no other. If you like to delve deep into history and catch local tidbits, gather a group of at least 10 people and opt for a private tour of the Phuket Old Town Community at 800 baht per person. Tours begin from 9am - 1pm. +66 (0) 81 892 0618, (0) 84 305 3960. THERMAL DYNAMIC Spare a day or two while vacationing in Thailand’s magnificent South for the relaxing hydrotherapy programme in the natural hot springs of Khlong Thom district in Krabi province. These thermal springs possess mineral properties considered beneficial to the body. Resorts in Krabi are now offering daytrips to these areas with visits that range from as little as 6 hours to a week’s worth of programmes. For a day visit, treatments start with body exfoliation with a fresh herbal scrub, followed by a hydrotherapy session in hot and cold pools. Temperatures in the pools range from 15-10 degrees celsius for the cold pool, 36-38 degrees for warm ones and 40-42 degrees for the hot pools. The programme also offers Thai yoga exercises, neck and shoulder massages or a 60-minute Thai massage, Thai handicraft lessons and lunch. Round-trip transfers from Krabi town to the resort are available. Children aged 15 and over can also participate in the programme with their parents at an extra charge. CAKES ON A CLIFF Up on the cliff near Rawai beach on the southern tip of Phuket island is a private property that opens as a café three days a week. Margaret offers an English garden setting, co-existing with the island’s indigenous tropical palms and coconut trees while a shaded terrace offers alfresco sitting areas overlooking the sea and the nearby Koh Bon and Koh Kaew Phitsadan. Margaret is also known for their scrumptious homemade cakes — from lemon tarts to pillowy soft chocolate cakes and strawberry shortcakes layered with fresh cream. Drinks include gourmet coffees, teas and frappes as well as fruit juices and smoothies. Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays: 9am - 5pm, 101/5 Moo 6, Soi Laem Phromthep 1, Rawai, Phuket, +66 (0) 61 794 2995. TURTLE RUN October 8 of this year marks the 13th anniversary of Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation’s annual Turtle Run and teaches awareness of the beach of Mai Khao as a nesting place for sea turtles. In hopes of raising money for turtle conservation work by the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC) and the Royal Thai Navy, the run will be in three categories: 2.5km, 5.3km, and 10.2km. Anyone from the age of 5-85 can apply for the event online until September 20 and receive the speciallydesigned ‘Turtle Run’ team jersey and bib. 98
