Bentley was founded by Walter Owen

Bentley, known to all as ‘W.O.’ He was a

born engineer, but his first experience was

not with motor cars - it was trains. In 1905,

aged 16, he set off on his bicycle to work

at the Great Northern Railway Locomotive

Works in Doncaster, northern England.

Off duty, he soon abandoned the push-bike

in favour of motor cycling and with his

brother took to racing. In their first event, the

London to Edinburgh Trial, they won a gold

medal. W.O. raced at the Isle of Man TT event

and Brooklands race track, near London.

The internal combustion engine made

sweeter music to his ears than steam

trains and in 1912 Bentley’s family found

funds enough to buy a small company

importing French DFP sports cars.

On a visit to the DFP factory in 1913,

W.O. happened to notice an aluminium

paperweight on somebody’s desk.

It gave him the idea of using the

lightweight metal in place of cast

iron to make engine pistons.

The first such Bentley pistons went into

service in aero engines for the Sopwith Camel,

during the Great War, but when the fighting

B E N T L E Y H I S T O RY

17

was over, W.O. set about development of a

racing engine - Experimental Bentley No 1.

“ I wanted to make a fast car, a good car

- the best in its class”, and he did.

In the 1920’s, with the 3 litre, 85bhp engine

providing speeds of 80 mph and more, Bentley

Motors set numerous speed and endurance

records, competed successfully at Indianapolis,

the Isle of Man TT and Brooklands - and

became inextricably linked with the history

of the famous 24-hour race at Le Mans.

Le Mans - one of the longest established

motor races in the world - is a gruelling

test of speed, endurance and teamwork.

The legendary Bentley Boys - ex-fighter pilot

Birkin, diamond heir Barnato, adventurer

Kidston, Harley Street consultant Benjafield

and former jockey George Duller - achieved

Le Mans victories in 1924, 1927, 1928 1929,

and 1930 - taking the first four places in 1929.

Yet despite its racing record and public

acclaim, Bentley Motors was beset by financial

difficulty. By 1931 the golden age was over, but

as closure loomed, Rolls-Royce stepped in to

save the Bentley name - and a new era began.

W.O. was taken on as a development

engineer by the new owners.

B E N T L E Y H I S T O RY

19

Social trends in the late 1920s/early 1930s

were mirrored in a rise in smaller ownerdriver

saloon cars with style, performance

and comfort. Bentley Motors (1931) Ltd

successfully met this demand with the Derbybuilt

3 1 /2 and 4 1 /4-litre Bentleys built between

1933 and 1939 but when W.O. was offered a

job at Lagonda in 1935, the year that a Lagonda

won at Le Mans, the allure of working with

racing cars again was irresistible. He went on to

design the V12 Lagonda, later working for Aston

Martin and Armstrong-Siddeley before retiring.

Encouraged by Stanley Sedgwick and the

Bentley Drivers Club, W.O. was Patron

of the club until his death in 1971.

When Bentley announced its return

to Le Mans in late 2000, it was clearly

stated that it would be a three year

programme with victory the only aim.

In 2001, Team Bentley scored a remarkable

third place followed by a creditable

fourth in 2002 with the EXP Speed 8.

Then with the culmination of the development

programme, Bentley achieved outright

victory in June 2003 - bang on schedule.

More than 550 BHP.

Over 190 MPH.

0-60 in 4.7 seconds.

12 cylinders.

6 speed transmission.

Figures upon a page that tell you something

extraordinary has been created. A car that

will offer you an exhilarating experience of

huge, controlled power. Power that cannot

be mastered yet never makes you its slave.

Power that supports you. Rewards you.

Impresses you every time it is unleashed.

With a seemingly endless supply in reserve.

But this is not just about acceleration.

Or speed. Or power.

This is about what moves you.

What makes you feel alive.

A Grand Tourer that brings with it a potent

blend of the most advanced engineering,

phenomenal performance, complex beauty

and traditional, handcrafted luxury.

A four-seater coupe that delivers

huge amounts of fun whilst at the

same time offering an irresistible

proposition for everyday driving.

The new Continental GT is a Bentley like

no other. Designed, developed and tuned

by Bentley. Built in Crewe, the home of

engineering excellence for over 60 years.

Our most advanced car ever will be rich in

history with all the handcrafted excellence

in hide, real wood veneers and chrome

detail that sets the Bentley marque apart.

The swiftest Bentley ever built will still have

an inordinate amount of time lavished upon

it by craftsmen and women who breathe

life into every one of our vehicles with

countless touches of finesse. The dizzying

array of hides for the steering wheel alone

takes hours to be double stitched by hand.

Real practicality meets supercar performance.

It has taken a lifetime to make

something this special.

Enjoy every single second.

Arnage: a corner of the Le Mans circuit where

the marque first made its reputation, and also

the name Bentley has given to an exceptional

four-door performance saloon. The 2005

model year Arnage is a clear symbol of our

ambition to remain the leader in the luxury

saloon sector, by reinforcing our position as

the creators of the most characterful, and

involving Grand Touring saloons in the world.

The 2005 model year Arnage also complies

with the most stringent emission regulations

enforced in Europe (EU4) and even achieves

Low Emmission Vehicle (LEV) rating in the USA

A R N A G E T

The 2005 model year confirms the Arnage T

in its role as the powerhouse of the range,

an unforgettable driving experience and the

21st century personification of the tidal

wave on wheels, a phrase first coined to

describe a Bentley Turbo over 20 years ago.

At its disposal is the ultimate development

of the twin-turbo V8, an engine noted for its

450bhp (336kW) output but distinguished by

its astonishing 645lb ft (875Nm) of torque.

It endows the Arnage T with the ability to

reach 60mph from rest in 5.5 seconds and a

top speed of 168mph (270km/h) - this from a

car capable of carrying four adults and their

luggage in traditional Grand Touring style.

A grand tourer is defined not by one particular

quality, but by several. A grand tourer reconciles

opposites; it is a car that balances feedback

with suppleness, exhilaration with comfort.

At the wheel of a grand tourer, the longer the

distance, the more you enjoy the journey.

The Arnage R sets a new benchmark for

grand tourers. A full four-door, five seat

luxury saloon, its twin-turbocharged 6.75

litre V8 engine produces 400 bhp (298kW)

and 616 lb.ft (835 Nm) of torque.

But power is only one side of the Arnage

R’s character. At any speed, the hand-built,

meticulously crafted interior is a relaxing

and inspiring environment. As the engine’s

torque propels you onward at effortless

pace, the miles unfold swiftly and easily.

Outside, a sports saloon. Inside

a first class cabin.

The 400bhp (298kW) twin turbo V8 boasts

616lb ft (835Nm) of torque, giving instant

response in any gear at any engine speed.

Driver and rear seat passengers can all

enjoy the benefits of unrestricted legroom

in an interior of handcrafted luxury. Room

to stretch your legs whilst the car flexes

its muscles. Arnage RL is a spacious touring

limousine with the heart of a thoroughbred.

The Bentley Arnage RL limousine combines

accommodation with exhilaration.
