Greetings, 

In this issue of the newsletter, we are pleased to honor a number of Denver Health 

Foundation stars. As part of the NightShine Gala on April 28th, tribute was paid to some 

of the finest people I have ever known: Dr. Ben and Jean Galloway, Russ Dispense and 

Dr. Patty Gabow. 

Honorees, Dr. Ben and Jean Galloway, have spent their illustrious careers in service to the 

Denver community. Ben’s early days at Denver General Hospital prepared him well for 

civic life as a Forensic Pathologist in city, and state government. There is a saying that 

goes, “Denver Health is not for everyone, but once it gets in your blood you’re hooked 

for life.” This has been especially true for “Dr. Ben” who remains a visible and vocal 

supporter. His wife, Jean Galloway, is responsible for raising the awareness of an entire 

city about the needs of its vulnerable citizens through creative public programs like 

9WHo CARE, and 9Cares Colorado Shares. For us, we are indebted to her for inventing 

one of our best-know outreach initiatives, “open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need.” 

It was a personal pleasure for me to watch them receive this recognition. 

Russ Dispense may be the successful President and CEo of King Soopers and City 

Market, but he’s not all business—far from it. He was honored at our NightShine Gala 

because he understands that Denver Health is an essential component of our region’s 

well-being and has stood by our side in countless ways. He has been a steadfast 

supporter of Foundation special events and has a special spot in his heart for babies. 

Using his stores as a fundraising platform, Russ and King Soopers have made a singular 

financial impact on our Newborns in Need program, helping thousands of Denver Health 

babies each year. 

Were it not for Dr. Patty Gabow, Denver Health’s CEo, I might never have become 

involved with the Foundation’s Board of Directors. It takes a special kind of business 

acumen, intelligence and long-range vision to turn around a major institution—especially 

one with so many stakeholders. over the years, my admiration for her talents has grown, 

and my respect for her accomplishments has deepened. leaders across the country in 

all pursuits, both public and private, will do well to learn from her experience. She will 

be missed when she retires in September, but I know there will be many opportunities to 

reflect on the many lessons she taught me. 

Both Patty and I know the importance of surrounding yourself with strong leadership 

such as that of our board members and NightShine co-chairs Steve Farber, Pat Cortez, 

Chuck Morris and former Mayor Wellington Webb. And, the sensational Hot Rocks Griller 

Challenge had its own stellar leadership team of Michael Pollak and John Elway. I hope 

you enjoy reading about our successes of the past few months.

the Hot rocks Griller Challenge, held on wednesday June 13, 2012 at elway’s in Cherry Creek, brought 16 of the top chefs 

from Denver’s finest restaurants to raise awareness of men’s health issues. It was, once again, for the fourth year in a row, the 

party of the summer in Denver. the celebrity chef competition raised $93,000 for Men’s Health programs at Denver Health! 

The popular vote by event attendees deemed Tyler 

Wiard and Aniedra Nichols, from Elway’s Cherry 

Creek, the winning chefs with Aniedra’s Reuben 

and a side of Sweet Potato Tater Tots with Habanero 

Ketchup. The Chef’s vote was tied with Troy Guard of 

Tag and Paul Reilly of Encore as the winning chefs.

earning the highest score and each winning a 

gorgeous Movado Bold watch. The VIP lounge 

within the event was clearly the place to be with its 

stylish atmosphere and incredible wine and alcohol 

tastings. 

We believe investing in men’s health care initiatives 

is imperative to the health of our community. 

Because when men remain active and healthy, 

families and communities thrive. Dollars raised 

through Hot Rocks will improve men’s health education, 

access to screening and treatment programs, and 

outreach to Denver’s medically underserved men.

support of this year’s NightShine Gala helping raise 

more than $1.3 million! 

Community activists and philanthropists, 

Dr. Ben and Jean Galloway, and Russ Dispense, 

President and CEo of King Soopers and City 

Market, were highlighted as Denver Health 

Foundation Stars. The evening’s program was additionally 

meaningful when Denver Health CEo, Dr. Patricia Gabow was 

honored. Dr. Gabow has transformed what was once an ailing 

city-owned hospital into an independent, efficient health 

care system that now serves as a model for the nation. 

Dr. Gabow will be retiring in September of 2012. 

The event leadership was provided by tremendous 

community leaders: Steve Farber, President and Managing 

Partner of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, as the event 

chair; Pat Cortez, Senior Vice President, Public Relations of 

Wells Fargo Bank; Chuck Morris, President and CEo of AEG 

live Rocky Mountains; and former Mayor Wellington Webb, 

President of Webb Group International, as the event cochairs 

– all of whom were the key to its success.

Denver Health Celebrates volunteers 

Congratulations to Susan Gomez: Volunteer of 

the Year Award Winner! 

Denver Health volunteers were honored at the annual Volunteer and Donor Recognition 

luncheon held on April 12th at the Denver Art Museum. Attendees were treated to 

motivational words from former First lady of Colorado, Frances W. owens, Patricia 

Gabow, M.D., CEo of Denver Health and laurel Ris, Director of Volunteer Services 

and Patient Information at Denver Health. Special awards and recognition were paid 

to outstanding volunteers and employees. The National Charity league was named the 

Partner of the Year, Sheila Perez-Kindle was named the Volunteer Supervisor of the 

Year and Susan Gomez was named the Volunteer of the Year for her work as a Spiritual 

Care Patient Visitor.

style, humble demeanor and her respect for all patients…Sue is able to sit quietly with 

patients and take the time to listen to their stories and, in an easygoing way, bring

one Book for Colorado 

April 18-27, 2012 

In support of lieutenant Governor Joe Garcia’s one Book 4 Colorado 

initiative, Denver Health and Reach out and Read Colorado 

held events at seven of our community health centers. Celebrity 

readers read Maybe a Bear Ate It, by Robie H. Harris to attentive 

preschoolers. Readers included member of the Denver Broncos Ring 

of Fame, Haven Moses, City Councilman Paul D. lopez, Former First 

lady of Colorado, Jeannie Ritter and Former Mayor, Wellington Webb.

Comcast Cares for Denver Health 

The Denver Health campus shines extra brightly due to the hard work 

of more than 400 Comcast employees and their family members who 

volunteered their time on Comcast Cares Day, held on April 21st. 

Comcast volunteers installed mulch and bark, spruced up gardens, 

planted flowers and made more than 100 fleece blankets and 400 

toiletry kits for Denver Health patients. 

“Comcast Cares Day accounts for more than 2,000 volunteer hours,” 

said laurel Ris, director, Volunteer Services. “We are so blessed that 

Comcast chooses to work with us every year.” 

Comcast Cares Day is one of the nation’s largest single-day corporate 

volunteer efforts. This year marked the fourth anniversary of Comcast 

Cares Day at Denver Health.

on August 21, 2010 

I had traveled to 

Vail, Co. to go on a 

bike ride with several 

of my friends. The 

day didn’t go as 

planned and I ended 

up coming to Denver 

Health with a severe 

neck injury. 

When I arrived at Denver Health I really didn’t know what to 

expect or the extent of my injury. I figured it was pretty serious 

as I had the attention of many doctors and nurses. So I 

focused on the task at hand, which was turning my well-being 

over to many people I had never met before. looking back at 

the whole ordeal, I consider it a situation where I ended up at 

the right place, at the right time, with the right people. 

In the emergency room every one was doing their jobs in a 

professional and courteous manner. It kept me peaceful and 

relaxed as everyone knew what their specific role was and 

they showed genuine interest in my situation. No better time 

to stay calm, right? 

Nationally and at Denver Health, one of the top 

causes of injury is falls, specifically falls related to 

recreational activities such as skiing, snowboarding, 

and bicycling. Falls from a bicycle can be very dangerous, 

especially when an individual does not wear a helmet. 

The data is overwhelmingly clear – bicycle helmets save 

lives and prevent injuries. The Insurance Institute for 

Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that in 2009 about 91 

percent of the 630 bicyclists sustaining fatal injuries did 

not wear a helmet. In most cases, says the IIHS, head 

injuries were the leading cause of death. Wearing a bicycle 

helmet can reduce your risk of head injury by about 85 

percent to 88 percent, according to the National Highway 

Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). 

Safety is a priority in ensuring that everyone is able to ride 

their bike for many years to come. Bicycle helmets have 

changed public safety for bicyclists and it’s important to 

have a helmet, wear your helmet, and tell others to make 

sure they wear their helmets also. It’s our mission at Denver 

Health to help care for you if you are injured – but when 

you wear that helmet, you make it less likely that you will 

need our help in the future.

Then I met you for the first time, the doctor that was going 

to make a major difference in my life. You were confident 

and optimistic! Your demeanor reaffirmed my belief that 

everything was going to be okay in the long run, no matter 

what short term obstacles might be in our way. Everything 

you told me to expect came true and I couldn’t be more 

thankful that I was delivered in to your care. I consider 

myself to be a very lucky man. 

Please thank all the doctors who assisted during the surgery 

and to all of your staff. The nurses who took care of me 

during my recovery also deserve a tremendous amount of 

thanks as well. 

After three months of home recovery I was back to work. Six 

months after the surgery I was riding the bike again. My first 

bike race was within a year of my accident. This year I have 

started my regular bike racing schedule for 2012. You were 

right when you said I would go back to doing all the things I 

used to do before that day in August of 2010.

Dear Denver Health, 

I want to thank your amazing team of doctors, nurses, 

therapists, social workers and staff who saved my life. There 

was a time when they were not sure if I would live. You never 

know what your life holds for you, but thank God I was a 

patient at Denver Health. I had a road bike accident, I was 

riding on a path I had ridden many times before. little did I 

know that when I buckled my helmet that morning it would 

save my life! Unfortunately I sustained a Traumatic Brain 

Injury, crushed Thoracic Vertebrae 7, broke many bones and 

was in a coma for weeks. 

Your hospital has a group of world renowned trauma doctors 

and team that included my family in meetings. At the 

meetings the team answered my family’s questions and 

informed them of the direction of my health care. My family 

and I experienced excellent medical care with compassion. 

one and one-half years after my accident I am living a very 

full life; I want to thank Denver Health, and my bike helmet, 

for my life.

Newborns in Need Baby shower 

at the Governor’s Mansion 

each year since 2003, a baby shower to support Denver Health foundation’s 

Newborns in Need program has been held at the Boettcher Mansion at the 

Governor’s residence. 

New baby items valued at more than $3,000 were donated by 140 guests 

who attended on Sunday, May 6th. The afternoon tea provided an opportunity 

for the program to thank its most significant donors and volunteers and 

“Special Friend of Newborns in Need” awards were presented. Corporate 

recipients included The Boppy Company and King Soopers. Private individuals 

included seamstress, Brenda llewellyn, Cathy Goodman of the Columbine 

Quilt Guild, The Chicks That Click (a group of professional photographers who 

donate their services to create the program’s Babies of Denver Health calendar 

each year) and volunteer, Erin Hampton. 

Denver Health neo-natologist, Dr. Sharon langendoerfer, recounted a few of 

the many heart-wrenching situations that she sees daily in her practice. 

For their extraordinary support of some of Denver’s tiniest and most vulnerable 

citizens the Foundation thanks its many donors and volunteers and especially 

the members of the Newborns in Need Advisory Committee: Dawn Anna, 

Sylvia Atencio, Sharon Magness Blake, liz Buckley, Aimee Caplis, linda

Denver throws a Baby shower! 

May 5th and 6th was a great weekend for Denver Health Foundation’s Newborns 

in Need program. once a year, as Mother’s Day approaches, the entire Denver 

community is invited to rally around the thousands of low-income babies born at 

Denver Health Medical Center. It’s a time when “Denver Throws a Baby Shower!” 

and donors were invited to drop off new baby items to help the cause. 

Dozens of volunteers greeted cars as they drove through the parking lot of the 

hospital and unloaded diapers, wipes and new baby items. Many of the vehicles were 

carrying donations from baby showers that were held in homes and businesses like 

Merrill lynch, Better Business Bureau, Galloway Group, and lockheed Martin 

For the first time this year, drop-off locations also included all metro area Coldwater 

Creek stores and Kuni lexus Automotive. The generosity of the community was 

overwhelming and over 6,000 items were donated – a record-breaking number. Also, 

for the first time, the city’s biggest baby shower had a media sponsor, The Boppy 

Company. With their support, “open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need” received 

tremendous TV publicity on 9News in the form of a public service announcement 

featuring newscaster, Cheryl Preheim, that aired in the weeks leading up to the 

event. King Soopers again provided a platform for cash donations by offering their 

customers a way to give at their local stores during the entire month of May. 

Foundation Program Director, Robin Engleberg, expressed her gratitude by saying, 

“Every baby deserves a healthy start in life. But in this economy, many families struggle to provide for their infants. In many cases, 

the gifts provided by the Newborns in Need program are the only new items their babies will receive. It means the world to them. 

I want to thank everyone who helped to make the day such a success and who support the program year round.”

In her job as Collateral Control Administrator at Wells Fargo 

Capital Finance Business Credit Division, Ann is given 

two days off each year to volunteer in the community. She 

chose the Foundation’s Newborns in Need program. She 

was so touched by the needs of babies born into poverty in 

Denver that she made a presentation to the The Good Works 

committee. They allocate funds based on recommendations

Its Heart to 

Newborns in Need 

by employees who have significant volunteer experiences. 

Her persuasive description of the program resulted in a 

$5,000 gift from Wells Fargo to Newborns in Need. 

This is not the first time that Wells Fargo has stepped up 

in support of Denver Health Foundation. Since 1997, the 

different arms of Wells Fargo, including the national office, 

the Wells Fargo Foundation, their local branches, and Wells 

Fargo Advisors, have generously supported many Denver 

Health projects including the Child and Adolescent Pavilion 

Project, School-Based Health Centers, the Trauma and 

Urology endowments, as well as participating as sponsors in 

several events including the NightShine Gala, Hot Rocks and 

the Riverfront Fashion Show. 

Their cumulative donations equal $220,250. Wells Fargo 

Vice President, Pat Cortez, has played a major role by serving 

as a member of the Foundation Board of Directors and 

has been instrumental in developing a strong connection 

between these two institutions. We salute Ann Coronado and 

Wells Fargo for their support of Denver Health.

strear family Garden 

at Denver Health — 

An update 

If you’ve been to the main campus of Denver 

Health in recent months, you’ve no doubt seen 

the Strear Family Garden under construction. This 

project is nearing completion with a ribbon cutting 

scheduled for mid-July, when we will unveil a new 

essential element to patient care: a garden where 

patients, staff, and visitors can relax in a calm and 

soothing outdoor environment. The new garden will 

feature a beautiful fountain as well as a pleasant, 

creatively landscaped environment filled with 

flowers, natural grasses, and shade trees. Engraved 

brick pavers commemorate special people or 

moments.

ToAST! to Denver’s Health, co-chaired by Kasia Iwaniczko

in the beautiful downtown lobby of Colorado Business Bank. 

The event supported level one Society’s efforts to help the 

children of our community regain their mental health. 

Generously sponsored by Colorado Business Bank, the event 

was part of an effort to raise $1.5 million for “Beyond the 

Stigma,” a campaign launched last fall to support a research 

fund for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health. This new 

program is directed specifically to support cutting-edge 

research at Denver Health and raise awareness of behavioral 

health issues in children and adolescents. 

Thanks to the level one Society’s efforts at the ToAST!, 

guests contributed over $11,000 to support this research 

fund. Attendees who donated $500 or more received 

vibrant and inspiring hand-painted flower pots made by the

A Gift of Gratitude… 

20 Years later 

Sometimes gratitude never diminishes – sometimes it lives 

on for years in the hearts, minds and souls of patients 

and families. 

Such is the case of the 

parents of Sue*, a young 

woman who twenty years ago 

suffered substantial injuries 

resulting from an automobile 

accident. Though her injuries 

were ultimately fatal, her 

parents never forgot the care 

and compassion she and the 

family received at Denver 

Health, and the gratitude they 

felt never dimmed. 

So, twenty years and three 

months later, they called the 

foundation office and said, 

“We always wanted to give 

back to Denver Health and 

only just now are in a position 

to do so.” After learning more about Sue’s passions and 

interests, several recommendations were made for how 

our patients today could be made a bit more comfortable, 

in Sue’s memory. 

The parents made a substantial gift to benefit many areas 

of Denver Health, including a mobile cart with a variety of 

magazines subscriptions, in English and Spanish, so those 

in our waiting areas have something interesting and current 

to read. Soon, new whimsical art will grace the waiting area 

of the Denver Emergency Center for Children. The final area 

of their gift supports the new Strear Family Garden.

1860 legacy Society 

A delightful gentleman called the foundation late last year 

and shared an amazing gift he decided to make – not a 

year end cash donation, not an offer to volunteer his time 

and not a donation of much needed winter coats – rather, 

he let us know that he had put Denver Health Foundation 

in his will. 

Joe*, who lives humbly, has been a patient of Denver 

Health for 24 years. When asked how he decided to 

make this gift, he answered, “Since I became a patient 

in 1987, the people I’ve come into contact with have 

been pretty terrific. I’ve been fortunate to have a 

wonderful primary care physician in Dr. Holly Batal, 

and Dr. Alison lieberman has also helped me a great 

deal. I once considered going to a private practice, 

but decided to stay with Denver Health.” 

Joe, who is without heirs, has directed 95% of his 

estate to Denver Health with instructions to help 

our young patients in outpatient Behavioral Health 

department. The size of the gift matters not, it is the 

fact that he wants to leave a legacy.
