Retail Design Expo review 1
(CJ Retail Solutions stand)
Feedback from members has been extremely positive
and exhibitors have been praising the show and the
quality of the visitors who came. Many exhibitors
have already confirmed their return to Retail Design
Expo 2018: arken-pop International, CJ Retail
Solutions, Leach Impact, Illuma Lighting and ICON
Retail to name but a few.
Michael Trevethan, marketing manager of Leach
Impact comments: “This year’s RDE show was really
positive for us. Not only did we generate a record
number of leads, the quality of leads and people we
were speaking to had also improved. The show is
also a valuable opportunity for us to catch up with
some of our current customer base who attend year
on year. Next year we will be aiming to improve again
and to maximise the number of new business leads
generated.” Another SDEA member, Illuma Lighting,
have also rebooked for next year, with their
marketing manager Lewis Hearne commenting:
“While competition in the retail lighting sector is
fierce, the number of visitors to the Illuma Retail
Design Expo stand was incredible - especially
considering it was only Illuma's second year at the
show.”
Retail Design Expo 2018 expands to meet exhibitor
demand
To accommodate the demand for exhibitors wanting
larger stands, plus new exhibitors wanting a piece of
the action, Retail Design Expo is growing and
expanding onto the Grand Hall Gallery, a majestic
area benefitting from lots of natural light that will
provide a stunning backdrop to the fabulous products
and solutions on display.
The dates for Retail Design Expo 2018 have been
announced as May 2nd & 3rd.
SDEA
MEMBER SERVICES
The Barbican Centre in London was the venue for
the Association’s 70th AGM in May. Members came
from across the country to learn from three equally
inspirational speakers, who are leading influencers
within their industries, with thought provoking
presentations on how they envisage the future of
retail and why retail theatre is vital. David Judge of
Judge XD, who is at the forefront of integrated
experiential design, fascinated the audience with his
views on technology in the future of retail. These
included ‘frictionless shopping’ - where technology
fuses seamlessly with the bricks and mortar store to
create an all encompassing retail experience and
put consumers in control. Judith Kelly, Senior
Project Manager of Retail Delivery for Land
Securities and Sara O’Rorke of Cord Design
Consultancy, delivered a compelling presentation
highlighting that successful partnerships were key
and result in shopping centres themselves becoming
intrinsically linked with the retailer in order to create
unique and innovative stores. These stores
ultimately produce a better experience for all
stakeholders, especially the shopper.
During the day’s proceedings SDEA President Alan
Pegram, CEO of Global Display and Vice President
Angus Morton, Head of Sales & Marketing at bbrown
display materials were elected for another
year.
MORPLAN LAUNCH NEW
STORE DESIGN SOFTWARE
Morplan know how hard it is to ensure that the shopfittings you buy will
look good and fit in your store. That’s why they’ve created their Design
Your Store software, which takes the guess work out of the equation. It’s
very simple to use and best of all, it’s free!
Measure your store and make note of any doors, windows, heaters and
power points. Input this information into the software and then drag and
drop the fittings you’d like. Don’t worry if you change your mind, it’s easy
to add and remove items as you go along!
The system will automatically tell you if anything doesn’t fit so you can be
confident in the position of each item. Morplan will then give you an
estimate for your project and render a 360° video of your virtual store so
you can explore it and tweak it before you commit.
Innovative South East-based plastics, print, graphics, acrylic display,
signage and point-of-sale company, Key2 Group, has just been featured on
an exciting new TV show for motor enthusiasts and petrol heads.
Supercar Megabuild on National Geographic is presented weekly by Dan
Baruffo and West Life’s Shane Lynch. The programme features a different
supercar each week and then attempts to pitch its powers against another
vehicle, in this case, a Ducati racing bike.
Key2 Group - which already brands
all the Ducati racing bikes for the
Moto Rapido Ducati team - is the
largest and most comprehensive
manufacturer of its type in
Hampshire. The company was
approached by Shine North TV to
design bespoke vehicle livery for
the bike to make it look similar to
the stunning black and white £2M
McLaren P1 supercar.
Key2 Group specialises in high
quality branding for businesses
ranging from local companies to
global brands with recent projects
completed for household names
such as Coca Cola, L’Oreal and
French Connection.
The TV production company then spent a day with the Key2 Group team
and filmed the bespoke vinyls being designed, printed and applied to the
previously all-black superbike - which had already been modified with
carbon fibre elements to ensure it was aerodynamic enough to attempt to
outrace the McLaren.
“It was very exciting to have a TV production crew here” confirmed
Managing Director, Mike Keating. “We have so many exciting state-of-theart
print machines here that they found it really interesting. The crew and
Dan, the presenter, were keen to film on our mezzanine print level as well
as in our workshop where Lee Richards, from our print team, applied the
bespoke colour-matched pearl white vinyls to the bike to make it look like a
McLaren.”
The programme originally
aired on Thursday 6th July and
was repeated again on
National Geographic on
Tuesday 11th July.
“It was a really unusual project
to work on” concluded Mike
Keating. “I’m really proud of
our entire team for the help
and assistance they gave the
TV crew and for the
professionalism, expertise and
design excellence they demonstrated. It’s a proud moment for a local
company to be featured on a show like this and it really highlighted the fact
that we are truly ‘bespoke’ and can turn our hand to anything.”
Just in case you wondered, the winning vehicle was 5 seconds quicker on
the lap…
To give you a clue, the Key2 Group branded ‘go faster’ stripes must have
worked…!
THE SILK FOREST HELP CREATE
A VIKING VILLAGE
Some years ago The Silk Forest worked on the landscapes for the Viking
Centre in York. That’s the one famous for it’s authentic recreation of a
Viking village right down to the smells.
Sadly as we know, York was hit by floods over the winter of 2015-21016
and the Viking Centre, situated below the Coppergate Shopping Centre,
didn’t escape. Made worse by being below street level, luckily the staff
managed to save all the valuable artefacts. They couldn’t however save the
village as over a metre of water covered the site. The term water is used
loosely as it contained some seriously unpleasant additions!
The York Archaeological Trust, which owns the Centre, spent most of 2016
having the area cleaned out and rebuilt. Working with Rick Matthews
Associates, the company responsible for rebuilding the ‘new’ Viking village,
The Silk Forest were asked to add the artificial landscape planting.
Not so easy as it sounds; first they had to make sure that whatever was
planted was as near to the varieties recorded in the excavated botanical
remains as possible. So the average everyday interior planting standards
went out of the window. The planting also has to show how it suffered from
being on the edge of what was a very busy area at the time.
This meant it was certainly not a set dressed with clean, pristine, perfect
examples such as a corporation flower bed. It was weeds, trampled,
scuffed, and walked over; the exact opposite of what the company are
normally asked to do.
Although many of the buildings would have had thatched roofs, many would
also have turves. So The Silk Forest built a turf-stack which sat beside the
Viking characters who were supposed to be working on the buildings - the
image clearly catches them during their tea break!.
For those unfamiliar with the Viking Centre, its origins lie in the archaeology
of the ground on which the shopping centre was built. Whilst excavating
the foundations, archaeologists uncovered the remains of a Viking village,
of which all the timber and organic materials had been preserved in the
waterlogged mud. Anaerobic conditions (meaning without oxygen) meant
the bacteria which normally causes decay could not survive. The things
that would usually rot away such as: shoes, bone combs, foundation
timbers, wooden implements and even axe marks in the timber all survived,
providing an unique snapshot of daily life in an Anglo-Scandinavian village
of the late tenth century.
A soundtrack has been recorded in which the language and voices of Viking
Jorvik have been recreated.
To see more of the scenes in the village, go to
www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk/the-vikings/the-people-of-jorvik where you can
LEACH EXPAND TEAM AND
CREATE INNOVATION DEPARMENT
Graphics display specialist Leach now has its
own innovation department, following the
appointment of a senior expert in industrial
design. Mike Willshaw joins as head of
innovation, after an extensive 20-year career
designing consumer goods, packaging, FMCG,
medical and promotional materials. Bringing a
wealth of experience in manufacturing
technologies, 3D printing and design
consultancy, he now takes the lead of a sixstrong
innovation team at the Huddersfield based firm.
With an annual budget of £250,000, this department will constantly
research, develop and engineer new ideas and products for the graphics
display marketplace. Commenting on Mike’s appointment, managing
director Richard Leach said: “We may have celebrated our 125th
anniversary last year, but our company is renowned for innovation. We’ve
continued to come up with new and unexpected graphic displays that get
the industry talking, but Mike’s talents take our design capabilities to even
greater levels.”
Mike added: “I love being able to think creatively and invent solutions that
offer stronger commercial benefits for our clients’ design problems.
Brands are constantly pushing boundaries and demanding more, whether
their brief is to increase footfall to a retail store or inspire visitors at a
heritage site.”
Mike’s appointment coincides with the arrival of
business development manager Dale Broadhead, who
joins Leach following a 20-year sales career. No
stranger to six and seven figure contract wins, Dale’s
experience will stand the company in good stead to
achieve its projected 15% growth this year.
Richard elaborated: “Dale’s CV spans sales and marketing expertise from
the worlds of retail, branding and signage. He is a strong communicator
who passionately collaborates with prospective clients to pose solutions
they didn’t think were possible. This approach reflects everything that
Leach has become renowned for, so he’s sure to prove a significant asset
to the team.”
SUZUKI ACCELERATES SALES THANKS TO
W&CO ILLUMINATED SIGNS
Suzuki has been on a recent drive to increase customer sales globally
through innovative marketing solutions and encouraging customers to go in
to more welcoming dealerships. Suzuki reviewed the vast portfolio of work
W&Co had undertaken with high end automotive clients such as BMW,
MINI, Land Rover and Ford to name a few and was confident W&Co was the
right company to work with to realise their ambitions.
W&Co was approached direct by Suzuki Caribbean, based in Guadeloupe
and Martinique, and asked the company to develop and manufacture
illuminated signage and displays for several dealerships across the
Caribbean islands. Using W&Co's wealth of knowledge and expertise in
displays, signage and commercial automotive project experience they were
able to supply everything Suzuki needed.
In the Guadeloupe car showroom W&Co manufactured individual
illuminated built up letters which were mounted to a curved canopy over the
dealership entrance making an overall sign width of 8 metres wide.
Combined with internal freestanding displays and wall mounted LED light
boxes it all helps the car brand standout and encourages more customers
to enter the showroom increasing potential sales.
displays and signs for more Suzuki Caribbean car showrooms in the future.
VISION PRODUCT WALL IS LATEST
INNOVATION TO BE UNVEILED BY LEACH
Creative graphic display specialist Leach, has unveiled a number of
innovations for 2017.
Perhaps the most notable is the Vision Product Wall – a merchandise
display system which integrates illuminated fabric graphics to maximise use
of floor space. The result is an atmospheric ‘exhibition’ of hero products
which increases brand awareness and captures customer attention.
Created with flexibility in mind, the Product Walls are designed so that store
staff and merchandisers can update the look and feel of their displays
without fuss. Extra floating shelves or hooks can be added or removed with
ease, with all fixings neatly concealed behind the interchangeable fabric
graphic.
Manufactured in any size up to 15m x 3m, Product Wall Lite has been
created using a discreet magnetic-based display system, to allow maximum
flexibility for lightweight merchandise such as shoes, jewellery and
electronics. The heavy-duty Product Wall Max on the other hand, combines
slotted rails with high quality, illuminated graphics, to create an exclusive
merchandise display wall, perfect for larger items such as sports
equipment.
MEMBER NEWS
The Vision Product Wall system was one of many innovations that were
unveiled at the Retail Design Expo at Olympia in May. Visitors also saw
Leach’s new ultra-slim lightbox, made from easy-clean acrylic for an extra
glossy look – perfect for the jewellery and cosmetics industries.
Numerous illuminated and non-illuminated Vision 3D products also feature
in Leach’s product range for 2017, including column solutions, a circular
hanging canopy and a concave corner display. All have been designed to
make striking use of under-utilised retail space.
Commenting on these latest innovations, Richard concludes: “Our company
may have recently marked its 125th milestone year, but that longevity is a
testament to our forward-thinking approach. We are continually exploring
new products for the UK and overseas market, so that retail brands can
push boundaries when it comes to customer attraction and engagement.
Vision Product Wall is by far one of the most exciting inventions, in this
respect.”
With a 6-strong team dedicated to product innovation, Leach invests
£250,000 in the research and development of new graphic display
solutions, every year.
Designed primarily for retail environments, the Vision Product Wall system
is also expected to prove popular in the exhibition and trade show market.
Managing director Richard Leach explains: “We wanted to create an
impactful way to display merchandise and engage consumers. The Vision
Product Wall will therefore satisfy a number of challenges for retail brands
who want to attract customers into their store or showroom, and keep them
there! But because it is so eye-catching, it will capture attention in busy
exhibition halls too. It is a really effective way to present products that have
the potential to steal the show!”
T3 SYSTEMS AND OLSON VISUAL BRING
PROJECTION MAPPING IN TO THE FOLD
Olson Visual, the specialist full service large format graphic printing house,
partnered with T3 Systems to design and create a conference display wall
for Encore Productions. The wall was installed at the Hyatt Centric Hotel
located in Chicago, USA.
Kelly Olson from Olson Visual commented, “Using the T3 System meant we
could easily store and transport the entire structure as it fitted into 2 roller
cases. We are hoping to create more walls like this for other hotels as this
display was such a success.”
Olson Visual used the T3 modular framework system to create an 18-metrelong
conference display wall with a few key features that needed to be
included into the design for the actual project. The brief called for a large
display wall to be situated on the stage and serve as a back drop for the
numerous speakers that were to present at the event. The design included
two projection screens and custom cut out circles.
The projection screens consisted of rear projection film material which were
edged in Velcro and stretched over the T3 bars. The screens were used to
project a variety of slides, videos and PowerPoint media for the speakers to
use during their presentations.
As for the custom ‘halo’ circles, these consisted of 1/4-inch-thick foam core
board onto which LED tape was installed onto the back to give it the halo
effect. The circles were then mounted on the framework and under graphic.
The structure was built by two members of the Olson Visual team in under 2
hours and a further 4 hours for the graphics, rear projection screens and
custom cut out circles to be installed.
Jonathan Evitt, Managing Director of T3 Systems said: “The product is
adapting to new technologies using its fantastic versatility. Companies that
are involved with the T3 brand and are selling the product can look to the
future with confidence. This projection mapping project by Olson is just a
small part of the diverse project and technology road map that we have in
store.”
Celebrating the magic of flight, the
famous British brand Burberry installed a
full size hot air balloon in Heathrow
Terminal 2 - complete with staged
mannequins to celebrate the British longdistance
inflight balloon record. One of
the pilots on this famous flight wore a
Burberry gabardine to protect him from
the severe hardships of cold at high
altitude. Completing the scene (and
showcasing the latest Burberry fashion)
are a collection of mannequins, each one
modified to create the diorama of the
momentous occasion.
The figures were specially commissioned
by Burberry for this unique installation,
utilising the artists at Global Displays
London workshop to finely craft the body
forms into each individual pose.
GLOBAL DISPLAY HELP BURBERRY LIFT-OFF
Because of the uniqueness of the
installation and the desire to create a
scene as though caught in the moment of
lift off, every single mannequin had to be
modified and developed with no two
mannequins remaining identical.
From the sitting figure atop the basket to
the ones releasing the ropes, the Global
Display artists worked from sketches,
photographs and with the Burberry
creative team to ensure the mannequins
told the story of the moment of departure
to its fullest effect.
MEMBER FOCUS
SDEA Director, Antony Behiels was invited to see
first hand the manufacturer’s updated factory.
A LOOK INSIDE
ALPLAS’ NEW FACTORY
has been key to our continuing success as British
Manufacturers.”
Alplas have been in the POS market for almost 50
years and their reputation is renowned
throughout the industry, however not everyone is
aware of just how prolific they have become in the
realms of British Manufacturing.
Their new 60,000 square foot site is located just
a half hour train journey from London in Basildon,
Essex, in a former glass factory which has been
thoroughly modernised following substantial
investment. The company is still family owned
and run, with various members in roles
throughout the company, which now employs
around 35 staff.
The growth of Alplas has stemmed from their
belief in continuous investment of profits back in
to the company. This growth - especially from
injection moulding manufacturing - required a
move of just 10 miles from their previous base in
Southend-on-Sea.
Above: An injection moulding unit in action
To help with turnaround speeds and create a full
360° service, in recent years the company has
established its own in-house design team, who
are able to work with the customer on designs
and projects. The team utilize the latest in
computer aided design software - including 3D
modelling and creating prototypes on their two 3D
printers.
Whilst the company is obviously keen to
strengthen its UK sales, export has been a fertile
growth area for Alplas year on year - with sales
stretching across Europe and globally as far afield
as Australasia.
It’s always interesting to enter the showroom area
of a company as is so often the case you find
yourself saying, ‘I didn’t realise you made these’.
It was no different entering the showroom at
Alplas. There is a vast array of hooks, holders,
fixings and everything in between on display.
The investment is clear to see when you look
inside the factory; 7 injection moulding presses
are continuously working, turning out millions of
units a week. With over 200 moulds the products
vary across many different uses but the vast
majority are for POS and display.
Alongside the design team, Alplas also have the
ability to manufacture all their own moulds and
toolmaking with their in-house engineers, using
their machining centre and a fully equipped
toolmaking workshop with the latest in CNC
technology to create the fastest possible lead
times for customers.
The company have recently exhibited at
EuroShop, The VM & Display Show and Retail
Design Expo, where they have been keen to talk
to customers not only about their stock products,
but also to educate them about their far reaching
capabilities across their whole manufacturing
spectrum.
Above: The vast array of moulds available
It’s certainly good to see British manufacturing
being able to compete on price with China, but
also showing the tremendously short lead times
and turnaround that can be had by choosing a UK
manufacturer.
Above: The machining centre in action
During the tour of the factory it was clear that
Managing Director, Bernard Hood, is exceptionally
proud of the large quantity of trade customers
who trust Alplas to create solutions in-house,
prototype and then manufacture, stating that,
“Working together to achieve the end-user’s goal
INSURANCE FOCUS -
CUTTING CLAIMS WITH A PAPER TRAIL
At the end of 2016, the HSE announced that
almost one in two small refurbishment projects
failed to meet safety targets in inspections
during 2016. Aside from the serious concerns
this raises in respect of workers being hurt or
killed in accidents at work, there’s the wider
impact this has on claims experience for insurers
operating in this sector and the effect this
ultimately has on insurance premiums for
contractors.
Creating a paper trail to evidence that health
and safety risk management practices are firmly
in place and have been followed, can make a big
difference to claims outcomes. Evidence that
the worker understood the potential risks of the
work they were undertaking and the controls in
place can be used to successfully defend a
claims case if the prescribed control measures
were not followed properly – without this
evidence, firms will be in a much weaker
position.
In a survey of over 350 contractors, ECIC
Specialist Underwriters found that while the
majority (75%) ensure their workers sign site
specific health and safety assessments at the
start of every job, 13% do not make workers sign
the relevant documents and 12% were unsure.
A contractor with a neat folder detailing its
health and safety practices and risk
assessments may feel they have fulfilled their
obligations but, if those documents were not
provided to the employee, that will not stand up
in a court of law as evidence the claimant ought
to have known about the risks and known what
preventative action to take. This exposes the
contractor to claims for civil damages and, if
serious enough, a prosecution by the HSE which
may lead to a significant fine or even
imprisonment.
Large scale changes to the Sentencing
Guidelines last year have seen fines for
breaches of Health and Safety law rise
significantly. In the year since the new
guidelines were introduced there have been 19
fines of over £1 million compared to 3 in 2015
and none in 2014.
A signed, dated document to help defend a
liability claim.
The contractor must provide evidence that the
worker read the risk assessment, understood
the risks and signed and dated the Health and
Safety policy document prior to them
commencing the work. A signed, dated
document is the crucial piece of evidence a
contractor needs to assist defending a liability
claim.
The same rules apply for Labour Only
Subcontractors.
This process of creating a paper trail applies
equally to Labour Only Subcontractors (LOSC)
who will be considered as employees for the
purposes of a claim and covered under the main
contractor’s insurance. With skills shortages,
such a significant issue for the construction
industry, reliance on LOSC has become a matter
of survival for many smaller contractors. A
recent survey of contractors underlined the
immense pressure the sector is under to fill
skills shortages and the increasing reliance on
sub-contractors to fill the gap. 30% of
contractors said their business has been quite
seriously impacted by skills shortages and 56%
said they were going to use more subcontractors
in the next year.
LOSC should be treated like an employee and
they should sign health and safety documents at
the outset of each new contract and which
should be properly retained for at least 3 years
from the end of the contract taking into account
the Limitation Act 1980.
