THE BEACHES
Enjoy the sunshine on 33 miles of serene beaches by daylight or take a
romantic moonlit walk while enjoying an evening’s tropical breeze. Melbourne’s
beaches are perfect for sunbathing, surfing, riding fat-tired bikes, or just a place
for your family to enjoy the sand and serenity with plenty of elbow room.
Collectively, Melbourne’s beaches include the beachside towns of Melbourne
Beach, Indialantic, Indian Harbour Beach, and Satellite Beach. Ocean Park
and Spessard Holland Beach Park are popular surf breaks and fishing spots
amoung surf fisherman. Many locals say that Juan Ponce de Leon (credited
with discovering Florida) actually landed first in Melbourne Beach before
moving north up the coast to St. Augustine. Stop at Ponce de Leon Park and
snap a selfie with the life-size statue there.
Florida’s Space Coast’s only state park is Sebastian Inlet State Recreation
Area. This park is south of Melbourne’s beaches and straddles the inlet with
access on both the north and south sides. It’s one of the most popular parks
in the entire state system because of the excellent fishing access and the
consistent surf break. The tidal pool is a great place for little ones to get in the
very calm waters protected by a rock jetty, and it’s not unusual to see manatees
and dolphins gliding by. The campground is on the south side along with a boat
ramp and the Sebastian Fishing Museum.
The first of May officially marks the beginning of sea turtle nesting season in
the state of Florida. The beaches along Melbourne’s coast are a prime spot for
observing sea turtles during nesting season and are the largest nesting area in
the United States for both loggerhead and green sea turtles.
