Where the coffee is always on and smiles await!<br />
Open year -round, it is your one-stop shop for regional and provincial<br />
information, maps, souvenirs and knowledgeable, friendly staff, who will<br />
be happy to help you in any way they can. See the Fossil Display, have a<br />
coffee, peruse our gift shop and visit the Heritage Discovcery Centre<br />
Museum, on the lower level.<br />
If you need to stretch your legs, there are over 28km of walking trails and<br />
playground areas in Muskoseepi Park that begin at the Visitor Centre. The<br />
Trails follow the picturesque Bear Creek and a recently built dinosaur<br />
playground has been a great addition to the outdoor amenities. There is<br />
also a 40 ft Sundial, road side attraction, that tells time better than a<br />
watch at the intersection to the Centre. Join us this summer, June thru<br />
August for Welcome Wednesdays; Complimentary food and beverages<br />
all day, every Wednesday for visitors- and the ROTARY BUS TOURS - Free<br />
tour of the city every Tue. Wed, Thurs. (6:30 pm start).<br />

Located fifteen minutes west of Grande Prairie on HWY 43 in Wembley<br />
Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum is a world-class facility in the heart of<br />
the Peace Country on a 10 acre complex. Designed by Toronto-based<br />
Teeple Architects, Arndt Tkalcic Bengert (ATB) and Structural Engineers<br />
Fast & Epp, it has been featured in several architectural/design publications<br />
including AZURE, NUVO and MUSE magazines.<br />
The museum features extensive gallery spaces angled onto a unique set<br />
of beetle pine timber 7-beam nodal trusses, two classrooms, the 60-seat<br />
Aykroyd Family Theater, research and collections areas, the Dine-O-Saur<br />
restaurant, the Kaleidosaur gift shop, an outdoor discovery fossil walk<br />
and large outdoor playground. The museum exhibit experience transports<br />
the visitor to the Pipestone Creek bone-bed, devastation of the floodplain,<br />
through to cretaceous and Devonian periods on to today’s oilexploration<br />
in Alberta.<br />
The main gallery of the museum is focused on two exciting topics: new<br />
discoveries from Alberta and the diversity of life in the Wapiti Formation<br />
ecosystem. The museum will have on display five newly named dinosaurs<br />
from Alberta that have never been displayed as reconstructions anywhere<br />
else in the world. Using these new discoveries and our understanding of<br />
the botany, geology, climate and geography of the Grande Prairie region<br />
during the Cretaceous period. Visitors are guided through the process of<br />
reconstructing the ancient environment of the dinosaurs, to show the<br />

The permanent exhibit galleries of the museum provide a time-travel<br />
through paleo-fauna and flora discoveries dating back millions of yearsmany<br />
from the pipestone creek bone-bed. Designed by the award winning<br />
Reich+ Petch international from Toronto, the exhibits use a combination<br />
of conventional display methods and modern technology.<br />
The museum has a temporary exhibit that hosts 3-4 traveling exhibits<br />
each year. With plans of receiving and creating in-house capability to<br />
generate topical traveling exhibits, the museum intends to expand its<br />
reach and presence for regional, national and international audiences.<br />
The museum also offers summer programs, public programs, kids zone,<br />
distance education, lecture series. A new and very popular program<br />
is “ NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM” which includes a movie, stories<br />
from the Education department, Cretaceous music, snacks<br />

RED WILLOW FALLS<br />
West on Hwy. 43 then south at the Elmworth sign,<br />
then west on secondary Hwy 722, then turn left on<br />
Range Road 121, then right on Township Road 700<br />
and right again at the B.C. boarder. There is no sign<br />
indicating the B.C. boarder, use google maps/<strong>GP</strong>S.<br />
There is parking area off the side of the road. Roughly<br />
1.2 km hike to the edge of the valley with views of the<br />
Red Willow River. Keep right on the trail. On the left<br />
hand-side ropes tied to trees. The trail is quite steep,<br />
but is short. Once at the bottom, turn left and you will<br />
arrive at the falls.<br />
KAKWA FALLS<br />
South on Hwy 40 then West on Hwy 666 - Kakwa Falls,<br />
Alberta’s tallest waterfall, is a spectacular 30<br />
metres high. As beautiful as these falls are; getting<br />
there, is not for everyone. It is 168 km on mostly gravel<br />
road and then several water crossings that require<br />
ATV’s. Hiking: trails are not maintained - backcountry<br />
hikers must be completely self-reliant. Road access is<br />
weather dependant so please check with Alberta Parks<br />

THE DUNES<br />
South of Grande Prairie – The closest to the city: you can<br />
access just off Hwy 40, turn left at Camp Tamarack and<br />
staging is on the right. Or travel just south on Resources<br />
road till you see the Dunes Gold & Country Club sign,<br />
turn left there and there you will find lots of places to<br />
off load.<br />
This is an extensive trail system located just south of<br />
Grande Prairie providing approximately 35,000 acres of<br />
riding for all, and all l without seeing the same type of<br />
wildlife. Most of the riding is a difficulty of 1 to 2.<br />

Grande Prairie is a bustling city strategically<br />

Grande Prairie is strategically located at the heart of a regional transportation<br />
network.<br />
West of the city, via Highway 43, connects to British Columbia and is only 108<br />
km (67 mi) to Dawson Creek, Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway. Two hours south<br />
on Highway 40 will bring you into Grande Cache and Rocky Mountain<br />
adventures, with white water rafting, hiking, beautiful lakes and spectacular<br />
scenery. Two more hours and you are in the magnificent Rockies of Jasper<br />
National Park with world-class skiing, hot springs, restaurants and more! To<br />
the north of the city, along Highway 2, you’ll encounter the majestic Peace<br />
River Valley while crossing the historic Dunvegan Bridge and connect to the<br />

Love the Outdoors!<br />
With over 1,600 acres of park land throughout the city, Grande Prairie is<br />
full of opportunities to get outside and stay active.<br />
Muskoseepi Park runs through the centre of the city with 18 km (11<br />
mi) of both paved and natural trails winding through the urban forest<br />
for walking, biking and cross country skiing. The park features two large<br />
playgrounds, a splash park, an all-season pond for fishing and skating,<br />
outdoor basketball, tennis and lawn bowling courts, mini golf, disc golf<br />
and bird watching facilities. Muskoseepi Park is<br />
the place to be for festivals and entertainment;<br />
Grande Prairie’s Canada Day, Heritage Day and<br />
Municipal Government Day celebrations are held<br />
in the park and the outdoor amphitheatre with<br />
its hillside seating provides the stage for concerts,<br />
dance performances and other shows<br />
throughout the season. Stop by the Ernie<br />
Radbourne Pavilion for information or to check<br />
out the fun and educational programs offered<br />
for children of all ages.<br />
At the north end of Muskoseepi Park, across<br />
from Centre 2000, Maskwoteh Park<br />
features 900 metres of new trails, picnic areas<br />
and three new playground areas for children to<br />
enjoy. These new areas feature an outdoor<br />
classroom, a fossil hunt section and a rocks and<br />
ropes area all with a unique dinosaur theme.<br />
South Bear Creek Park offers a wide variety of recreational<br />
activities and facilities including ball diamonds, beach volleyball courts,<br />
and a Par 3 Wee Links golf course. The park also features a pavilion and<br />
picnic area, walking trails and an off leash dog park.<br />

RV SANI DUMP SITES<br />
There are two Sani Dump Sites in the City. One is<br />
located just south of the Visitor information centre at<br />
11102- 106 street and the other south on 100 street,<br />
turn right on 66 avenue follow the road around it will<br />
be on the right hand side where you will see the sign.<br />
Weather permitting, the sites usually run from May to<br />
October.<br />
SPEED LIMITS and DISTANCES<br />
Speed limits and distances in Alberta and the rest of<br />
Canada are in the metric system. To convert from kilometres<br />
(km) to miles, multiply km by 0.62 = miles.<br />
Common highway speed limits are 100 km/hour = 62<br />
mph; urban areas are 50 km/hour = 30 mph; school<br />
zones are 30 km/hour = 20 mph.<br />
TAXES<br />
Alberta is the only province in Canada with no Provincial<br />
Sales Tax (PST). The Canadian Government charges a<br />

hunter using a rifle, or enjoy the traditional use of a bow,<br />

In the spring, the region is a hunter’s paradise for trophy black bear.<br />
During the fall, bow and rifle hunters try for trophy elk, white-tailed<br />

game bird hunting for goose, duck and grouse. Regional sporting goods<br />

Spend even a few days exploring the County of Grande Prairie and you’ll begin to understand<br />
why we love this vast and dynamic landscape where we work and play. Located 460 km<br />
northwest of Edmonton, at the southern end of the Peace Country, the County of Grande Prairie<br />
is a study of contrasts: rich prairie, abundant rivers, creeks and small lakes, a mixed boreal forest,<br />
and the province’s northernmost badlands.<br />
You’ll see wildlife here, perhaps the majestic – and the still “threatened” – Trumpeter<br />
Swan that migrates to our lakes and sloughs in late April to nest and to raise its young,<br />
or you’ll see Canada geese snacking in fields or hear them honking as they fly overhead.<br />
If you keep a watchful eye, you’ll also spot moose, elk, mule deer, white tail deer, foxes,<br />
coyote and beaver.<br />

Travelling west on sunny days, particularly in winter, you’ll catch tantalizing glimpses<br />
of our majestic neighbours, the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. From atop the<br />
3100 foot Saskatoon Mountain in the west county, you can view the panorama of land<br />
that inspires artists and that enamoured the homesteaders who travelled the<br />
harrowing Edson Trail just a century ago to settle here. But this rise of land is no<br />
stranger to human habitation; archeologists have found evidence of humans here<br />
dating back 9000 – 10,000 B.C. when the now fertile farmland below would have<br />
been covered by a vast glacier.<br />
The County of Grande Prairie is becoming known internationally for its prehistoric<br />
resources. Paleontologists are busy excavating dinosaur fossils at Kleskun Hill,<br />
Pipestone Creek and the Red Willow River.<br />
They’ve recently found skeletons of duck-billed hadrosaur dinosaurs along the Red<br />
Willow River, several of which even have preserved skin impressions showing their<br />
knobby, scaly hide. This dinosaur is very unique and grew up to three tons and ten<br />
feet tall.<br />

The Pipestone Creek Bone-bed is one of the densest<br />
accumulations of dinosaur bones in the world and holds the<br />
remains of hundreds of horned dinosaurs washed onto a<br />
floodplain including the the first dinosaur named from the<br />
region, Pachyrhinosaurus Lakustai, was recently featured on<br />
the Royal Canadian Mint’s first glow-in-the-dark coin. This<br />
dinosaur was found in a massive bonebed at Pipestone Creek<br />
containing thousands of bones from animals the size of a<br />
dog up to the size of a rhinoceros. During the summer, you<br />
can take an interpretive walk at Pipestone Creek to visit an<br />
active dinosaur dig and imagine what the area was like 73<br />
million years ago when it teemed with dinosaurs, crocodiles,<br />
and turtles living in lush, swampy forests like those of the<br />
southern US instead of the more familiar aspen and spruce<br />
that fill the creek valley today.<br />

The Philip J Currie Dinosaur Museum is Canada's pre-eminent unidisciplinary<br />
museum in the making, dedicated to the study, research,<br />
collection and display of paleo-fauna and allied narrative drawn from the<br />
rich fossil heritage in northern Alberta. The 41,000 sq.ft. museum is located<br />
on a 10 acre-site with unprecedented sight-lines. It includes a theater, labs,<br />
classrooms, restaurant, a dino-playground and a Gift shop, in addition to<br />
nearly 11,000 sq.ft. of cutting-edge exhibit galleries.<br />
With its exposed layers of clay, sandstone and coal, the Kleskun Hill Natural<br />
Area to the east has the distinction of containing Alberta’s northernmost<br />
badlands, made up of rocks from the same age as those found in the<br />
badlands of Drumheller. Fossils of dinosaurs, lizards, fish and mammals<br />
were found in these badlands over 60 years ago, and more are found here<br />
every year. Kleskun has the most extensive and diverse native upland<br />
prairie vegetation in the Peace Region. You’ll even find prickly pear cactus<br />
here, a native plant more common to the grasslands of southern Alberta.<br />
But there’s still more to us than beautiful scenery and ancient fossils. For<br />
outdoor enthusiasts, we are an all-season recreational paradise. From<br />
picturesque rivers for canoeing and jet-boating, lakes for para-sailing, and<br />
creeks for fishing, to wildlife watching, geo-caching, hiking, cycling,<br />
snowmobiling, and riding ATV’s, the County of Grande Prairie offers<br />
recreation galore.<br />
If you want something a little less on the wild side, we have farmers’<br />
markets, festivals, cultural events, golf courses, museums, rodeos, historic<br />
sites, and pleasant country drives. We have plenty of campgrounds,<br />
restaurants, hotels, motels and coffee shops to help you enjoy our<br />
hospitality.<br />
The County Crosslinks Sportsplex is a 176,043 sq. ft. facility boasts two<br />
NHL sized hockey rinks, a 50,000 sq. ft. indoor field house, a 240 metre<br />
indoor running track, a 4,000 sq. ft. gym as well as a retail store, concession<br />
booth, outdoor patio and a fully licensed lounge. This 42 acre site is also<br />
home to eight outdoor playing fields, made up of a premier size<br />
soccer/football field, two full sized football fields, three youth soccer mini<br />
pitches, and two full-sized rugby fields.<br />
But if you come in the summer, what you’ll never forget are the indulgently<br />
long days when the sun rises just after 5 am and doesn’t set until nearly<br />
11 pm. Winters here can be crisp when the Chinook winds from the Rockies<br />
aren’t keeping things warm, but you’ll never tire of the sunshine; we have<br />
an average 314 sunny days waiting for you every year.<br />
Visit us and you’ll quickly understand why were called “la grande prairie”.<br />
But beware, legend says that once you taste the waters of the Peace River<br />

In 1915, the old Bezanson town site had twenty buildings, including a<br />
hall, general store, hotel, and bakery. Enormous efforts continue to<br />
maintain the heritage and revitalize the unique treasures of this<br />
community.<br />
The Old Bezanson Town site has had many improvements made over the<br />
last few years. Arborists have cleaned the deadfall and others are working<br />
to reclaim the area with more defined campsites, ball diamond, walking<br />
trails, a playground, and historic building markers. A full booklet has also<br />
been published that focuses on the diverse plant life of the old Bezanson<br />
town site that features native flowers, shrubs, and trees that have not<br />
been identified anywhere else in the Peace area.<br />
Efforts are now ongoing to repair and restore the Glen Leslie Church. It<br />
was designated a Provincial Historic Resource in 2011 by the Minister of<br />
Culture and Community Development. It is currently one of the only pre-<br />
1920’s structures left in the area.<br />
It will be worth your while to stop and smell the roses and aroma’s of<br />
these long standing attractions. Bring your appetite and be ready to<br />
experience the unique creations that only “Lefty’s Café” can offer. Lefty’s<br />
“is family-oriented with a relaxed country atmosphere and prides itself<br />
on providing hearty, delicious homemade food made from local<br />
ingredients. The convenient location and friendly staff make this a natural<br />
gathering spot for families and friends to chat, dine, and experience rural<br />
Alberta’s charm.<br />
The community of Bezanson, located approximately<br />
30 km east of Grande Prairie on<br />
Highway 43, has been a part of this area since<br />
the early 1900’s.<br />
Fenton Greenhouses is a family owned business that has been operating<br />
for over 25 years. They provide beautiful annuals, vegetables, flower pots,<br />
and also offer custom creations. Book a group tour to see their exquisite<br />
displays. They are open from mid-April to the end of June.<br />
Bezanson offers a General Store that has been serving the local gas, lotto,<br />
liquor, and grocery needs since the 1950’s.<br />
If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you will not be disappointed. Take a hike<br />
through the picturesque Kleskun Hill Park or the Simonette River<br />
Provincial Recreation Area, which offers campsites with amazing scenery,<br />
day use areas, and very easy access to a large, sandy beach, perfect for<br />
swimming. Bezanson is located only minutes from the Smoky River and<br />
they host the annual Bezanson Bog Cross Country Running Race on the<br />
third weekend in September for those of you that want to test your<br />
athletic endurance. There is also an outdoor ice rink to enjoy during the<br />
winter months.<br />

The park is 20 kilometres east of the Highway 43<br />
interchange, turn north on Township Road 724<br />
Traveling east on the twinned Highway 43, the surrounding prime<br />
agricultural farmland produces plentiful fields of barley, canola, wheat,<br />
and oats. Fields turn bright yellow in July as the County is one of the<br />
largest growing areas of canola Canada Oil. The fields seem endless -<br />
alfalfa, timothy, clover, fescue (top-notch grass) and seed forage crops<br />
providing hay for the dairy and beef farms. Game farms for elk, bison,<br />
llamas and alpacas are also gaining popularity in the region.<br />
Kleskun Hill Park is part of a provincial natural area and is managed by<br />
the County of Grande Prairie and a non-profit museum society. Once<br />
part of a prehistoric river delta, the natural area protects some of the<br />
last remaining native grassland in the Grande Prairie region. Here cactus<br />
grows in the desert-like conditions where remains of prehistoric lakes<br />
and seas are visible in the exposed hills. Kleskun Hill boasts more than<br />
160 flowering plants, as well as a number of birds that are usually found<br />
in the prairies of the south; its soils contain fossils from the marine sea<br />
and dinosaur eras.<br />
Going back in time, pioneers would sometimes use the white mud from<br />
the hills to chink the gaps in their log homes. A clue to early settlement<br />
also lies in the original wagon ruts from the early pioneers who traveled<br />
along the Edson Trail. Today within this natural area there are walking trails,<br />
and 9 unserviced camping sites for visitors to enjoy. The Kleskun Hill<br />
Museum Society has preserved the original East Kleskun school,<br />
teacherage, barn, outbuildings, the first area post office, and a Catholic<br />
Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Visitors may also view a native burial<br />
ground; evidence of the days of the last territorial disputes between the<br />
Beaver and Cree people.<br />

In the late 1940s, the Town of Sexsmith was known as the<br />
Grain Capital of the British Empire, shipping more grain than any<br />
other port in the Empire. To this day, the surrounding area has<br />
some of the most fertile soil, making it one of the largest grain<br />
producers in the world. Sexsmith has grown and is a friendly,<br />
progressive community with over 2500 people. The community<br />
offers excellent education, religious, recreational and cultural<br />
facilities, including a municipal campground called Heritage Park<br />
that includes a fish pond. These facilities continue to make<br />
Sexsmith a great place to live, raise a family and visit. Sexsmith<br />
is located minutes north on Highway #2 from the City of Grande<br />
Prairie; it’s a stop you don’t want to miss.<br />

Heritage Park<br />
Sexsmith has transformed its downtown core to showcase the 1920s<br />
and 30s. Vintage street lighting, a gazebo, large old fashioned clock, and<br />
a livery barn create a setting that allows you to step back into another<br />
era. An important attraction is the 1916 Sexsmith Blacksmith Shop, a<br />
provincial historical site that was built in 1916. It is one of the country’s<br />
most completely equipped operating museum sites of its type in<br />
existence, and one of the best examples in Canada of an early smithy.<br />
The resident smithy will leave visitors with a smile on their face while<br />
sharing stories about the beginnings of settlement in the region. Across<br />
from the blacksmith shop is the Paszkowski Farm House (1911) which<br />
has been restored to the original condition.<br />
The very active Museum Society is working to rebuild the old lumber<br />
yard that was destroyed by fire in 2009. To replace the 1916 Roman<br />
Catholic Church that also burned, they have purchased the beautiful<br />
Anglican Church, built in 1936. There is also discussion on trying to save<br />
an elevator, which would preserve our unique skyline.<br />
Further expanding on the old time theme is the old Sexsmith Railway<br />
Station and caboose, built in 1928; it is one of the focal points of the<br />
downtown and also a provincial historical site.<br />
Each year the Town of Sexsmith holds many annual events including<br />
Chautauqua Days in June. This event<br />
has been held for over 75 years,<br />
and is an old fashioned<br />
community celebration inspired by<br />
the traveling entertainers who first<br />
came to the prairies. It’s a great<br />
time to visit and exchange<br />

Glace traces is roots back to the early 1900s. Folklore has it that it was<br />
named after Chief La Glace who drowned in 1909 in nearby Valhalla Lake<br />
while trapping muskrats. Within the Hamlet is La Glace Heritage Park,<br />
which has beautiful brick-pathed gardens and a Cairn in memory of the<br />
well-respected native leader plus many pioneers of the area. The Cairn<br />
explains the local history, names of pioneers and has a time capsule filled<br />
with memorabilia and predictions from local children.<br />
Just a few minutes drive from Valhalla Centre and La Glace is the Spring<br />
Lake Ski Hill, which is open from January through March. Run by<br />
volunteers for over 20 years, the Spring Lake Hill is accommodating to<br />
skiers and snowboarders alike and has an excellent Beginner hill.<br />
Besides downhill skiing, there are over 10 kilometres of cross country ski<br />
trails at the facility. As well, ice fishing, snow shoeing and snowmobiling<br />
are also offered. A chalet and concession are also onsite to accommodate<br />
all visitors.<br />
Valhalla<br />
15 kilometres west of La Glace is the<br />
Hamlet of Valhalla Valhalla is home to many Norwegian<br />
descendants including Halvar Ronning, a Lutheran minister and<br />
missionary who facilitated a significant Scandinavian settlement. His son<br />
Chester, who was born in China, also lived in Valhalla Centre becoming a<br />
teacher and diplomat. Chester was an important link between China and<br />
North America, advocating recognition of the Peoples Republic of China<br />
and its admission into the United Nations. The Ronning Homestead in<br />
Valhalla became a Provincial Historic Resource in 2001.<br />
Make sure to stop and visit the restored Melsness Mercantile, a provincial<br />
historic site in Valhalla Centre. Originally a general store and post office,<br />
the local residents decided in 1994 to restore and save it as a local<br />
landmark. Thanks to the efforts of the Valhalla Heritage Society, the once<br />
rundown, abandoned building is now a coffee shop, serving scrumptious<br />
homemade food, a museum and a studio for local artists. Valhalla Park<br />
is a picnic area that preserves plants indigenous to the region and where<br />
3 ft, hand-carved wooden trolls greet visitors in tribute to the area’s<br />
Scandinavian heritage.<br />

Named after Wembley, England, the Town of<br />
Wembley has traditionally served the<br />
agricultural sector. As it pays tribute to its<br />
rural nature, this neighborly community<br />
gets together to celebrate annual events<br />
that you do not want to miss.<br />

A Demolition Derby is held annually with a full day of family<br />
entertainment. The day starts off with the town parade, show and shine,<br />
kids’ activities and games and then of course the demolition derby. The<br />
newest event held in the town is a two day Mud Bog. There are two race<br />
pits, one “Hill in the Hole” pit and of course a deep mud challenge. This<br />
annual event is mud flinging, wheel spinning, adrenaline filled good time.<br />
Wembley currently has a population of over 1500, and has amenities such<br />
as a skating rink, skateboard park, soccer, baseball, football fields and<br />
Sunset Lake Park. This park houses seven electrical camping sites with a<br />
non-serviced overflow and tenting area, flush washrooms with shower<br />
facility located in a spacious gazebo shelter. Included in the park are a<br />
dumping station, fire pits, firewood and marshland boardwalks. The<br />
campground opens in mid-May and closes in late September. Sunset also<br />
hosts a wonderful playground that has multiple climbing structures,<br />
gliders, slides, tire swings, swings, balance apprentice and a spray deck for<br />
those warm summer days. The playground is surrounded by wonderful<br />
green space which provides great places from picnics, Frisbee, Horse shoes<br />
and family time alike. This area also provides an excellent opportunity for<br />
bird watchers to check many local species off their list, hosting species of<br />
both marsh lands and Boreal Forests.<br />

Wembley is the gateway to the dinosaurs and is the home of the 41,000<br />
square foot, state-of-the art Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum. The<br />
Pipestone Creek area, located south of the Town of Wembley, has received<br />
international attention due to the discovery of the world’s largest<br />
Pachyrhinosaurus (“thick nosed” horned dinosaur) bone bed. The<br />
Pipestone Creek site contains hundreds of dinosaur skeletons, and is one<br />
of the best horned dinosaur bone beds found in North America. The<br />
Dinosaur Museum is a world class museum. The Museum and the Dinosaur<br />
Bone bed are a major tourism destination site for northwestern Alberta<br />
travelers.<br />
According to the Grande Prairie Regional College paleontology program,<br />
it’s a theory that during a migration more than 70 million years ago, a herd<br />
of the thick-nosed, plant-eating pachyrhinos tried to cross a river in a flood.<br />
The animals may have panicked and similar to the mass mortality of a<br />
Quebec caribou herd in the ‘80s, the dinosaurs died in the flood. It’s theorized<br />
the carcasses were washed downriver until they settled in a final location.<br />
Once there, the bones were disarticulated, jumbled up like a puzzle. Bone<br />
bed tours are offered on a regular basis.<br />

Nestled in a picturesque valley is the<br />
town of Beaverlodge.<br />
With a community of over 2300 people, Beaverlodge has experienced<br />
steady growth over the past decade. The agricultural, forestry, and oil<br />
and gas sectors have all contributed to the town’s prosperity. Today,<br />
Beaverlodge is the largest town in the County and is the service and<br />
medical centre for the entire west side of the County with a full<br />
complement of doctors, a dentist, and a hospital and pharmacy as well<br />
as other health and wellness practitioners. The town boasts a new<br />
indoor pool and fitness centre, ice arena, curling rink, agricultural barns<br />
and gymkhana grounds, tennis courts, ball diamonds, and several<br />
playgrounds.<br />
Opposite the Cultural Centre and tourist information centre, visitors can<br />
view the magnificent cultural roadside attraction in the form of<br />
Canada’s national animal, the beaver. The sculpture stands 17 feet tall<br />
by 28 feet long and weighs 3000 pounds.<br />
The town manages and operates the Pioneer Campground, featuring the<br />
original Lower Beaverlodge School, one of the first schools of the area.<br />
The building was restored and relocated to the campground. Our<br />
campground is an excellent stopping spot on the "best" route to Alaska.<br />
We have a total of 29 sites with 10 sites that offer full service and power<br />
hook-ups available at each stall, a washroom and shower facility are<br />
located in our beautiful log camp shelter, which has a lovely covered<br />
cooking/picnic area. A dumping station is located on the northeast corner<br />
of the campground. The campground opens around May 1st with power<br />
service, and water available after the risk of freezing passes. The<br />
campground closes for the season mid-October weather pending.<br />
Just West of Beaverlodge the South Peace Centennial Museum is a must<br />
see! It is the largest -- and only working --- steam powered farm<br />
equipment museum in Alberta.<br />
Pioneer Days on the third Sunday in July is very special: it features all the<br />
working steam-powered equipment, antique cars and trucks, and musical<br />
entertainment in keeping with the agricultural theme.<br />
Tourists may also visit the Pacific Regeneration Technologies tree nursery,<br />
the only PRT facility in Alberta. The greenhouses cover seven acres and<br />
produce eleven million seedlings of pine and spruce. The Agriculture<br />

Canada Research Farm (started in 1916 by farmer William Albright) is now the<br />
Canadian Centre for the management and production of bees and honey<br />
(apiculture). It is also the most northerly agricultural research station in North<br />

Saskatoon Mountain Natural Area, north at Huallen, accessed off Highway 43, offers<br />
one of the most spectacular views of the south and the west portions of the County.<br />
Visitors can explore over 2200 acres for bird watching, hiking, picnicking, and cross<br />
country skiing.<br />
To view the Elmworth gas basin area, turn right onto Secondary Highway 722, south<br />
from Beaverlodge and then Highway 667 to take in some spectacular views of the<br />
Rocky Mountains. At Red Willow River crossing be sure to visit the lovely Red Willow<br />
Market Gardens with its excellent produce, local crafts sales and tea room. Nearby<br />
Red Willow Park is a day-use picnic site with washrooms and kitchen shelter.<br />

Hythe, the Volunteer Capital of Alberta, has an economy<br />
based on services to the agricultural, forestry and oil and gas<br />
industries. This thriving community of 820 has a long history of<br />
strong volunteer driven initiatives which have resulted in the<br />
building of much of its present day infrastructure.<br />
Hythe boasts a curling rink, ice arena, campground, and other amenities.<br />
The 25-stall Hythe Municipal Campground provides visitors with kitchen<br />
shelters, water taps, an RV dumping station and washroom facilities<br />
including hot water showers within the vintage Northern Alberta<br />
Railway cabooses. The campground offers affordable rates ($20.00 per<br />
night), power and firewood supplied, and a relaxing atmosphere.<br />
Discounts are available for those looking for a longer stay.<br />
Love the sounds of engines roaring? From May to September, racing<br />
enthusiasts flock to the Hythe Motor Speedway. It is a 3/8 mile oval<br />
paved racetrack and features modified, street stock, starter stock,<br />
sportsman and sprint competitions. There is plenty of seating in the<br />
grandstands and concession booths are available. There are usually five or six<br />

When touring Hythe, one of your first stops should be the restored building<br />
immediately adjacent to Highway 43 which serves as our summer Tourist<br />
Information Booth. Much of the community’s history is portrayed in a pictorial<br />
representation featured in the log tack shop which belonged to early pioneer,<br />
Kelly Sunderman. Beside the tack shop is a museum which was originally a<br />
home built for a mail order bride. Unfortunately, the groom missed the<br />
intended bride and the home was never lived in.<br />

Half an hour north of Hythe, the Spring Lake Campground, is a popular<br />
area for camping and picnicking. It offers a boat launch, new dock,<br />

kitchen shelter, and horseshoe pits. Spring Lake Ski Hill offers downhill<br />
skiing and cross country skiing in the winter months and chalet rentals<br />
are available year-round. Southeast of Hythe on Highway 43, Hommy<br />

Hythe hosts many first class events that include an old fashioned downhome<br />
Agricultural Fair, held annually in August and hosted by the Hythe<br />

Travelling south and east from the County of Grande Prairie No. 1 is an area<br />
of fertle farmland which gradually transforms into mixed-wood forests. This<br />
vast territory known as the Municipal District (M.D.) of Greenview No. 16<br />
covers 32,915 square kilometres and includes the majestc Rockies in the<br />
southwest which serves as an entry point to tourists wishing to explore the full mountain range. Within the Grande Prairie<br />

Minutes south of Grande Prairie, motorists cross the Wapiti River and can access<br />
Secondary Highway 666 heading southwest. O’Brien Provincial Park on the banks of the<br />
Wapiti River is a favourite day use picnic area. Just down the road from O’Brien, the<br />
Nitehawk Adventure Park offers a summer aerial water ramp for the training of aerial<br />
snowboarding and skiing enthusiasts, mountain biking, and a full service year round<br />

Of particular interest to outdoor enthusiasts are Two Lakes Provincial Park and Kakwa<br />
Wildland Provincial Park. Two Lakes consists of three campgrounds and 87 campsites.<br />
The lakes are popular for sport fishing. About 15 kilometres south of Two Lakes via a<br />
rugged, fair-weather forest company gravel road is the remote Kakwa Wildland Provincial<br />
Park. Within the park, the Kakwa River cascades 30 meters over Kakwa Falls, rushes<br />
through a 4 kilometre canyon and then plunges over a second set of falls. Access to the<br />
falls is via a 20 kilometre trail suitable only for hikers, horseback or ATV. The Kakwa<br />
Wildland also boast a 100 kilometre remote trail system from the early 1900s used by<br />
pack teams, that runs through alpine meadows and old growth forests with specimens<br />
of Engelmann Spruce up to 300 years old. Forests and meadows offer visitors the<br />
opportunity to catch a glimpse of white-tailed deer, bald eagles, golden eagles, moose,<br />
coyotes, black bear and grizzly. To exit the park, visitors must retrace their drive via 666<br />
to Highway 40 and turn south to follow the spectacular scenery of the foothills of the<br />
Rocky Mountains.<br />
45 kilometres south of Grande Prairie and just east off of Highway 40 is the Musreau<br />
Lake Provincial Recreation Area. This spring-fed lake and camping area is a popular locale<br />
offering camping, boating and swimming plus access to ATV and equestrian trails.<br />

East of Grande Prairie and running south of Highway 43 from the<br />
Goodwin Corner is the Forestry Trunk Road. This gravel road is used by<br />
forestry, oil and gas industry workers in the region. It is also a favourite<br />
for those campers wishing to experience a more rugged but peaceful<br />
vacation. There are numerous small camp areas holding no more than 5<br />
or 10 sites which are operated and maintained by Canfor, Grande Prairie.<br />
Motorists can complete a circle loop on the gravel roads and access<br />
Highway 40 about 30 minutes south of Grande Prairie or head back to<br />
Highway 43 and head further east to the Valleyview area.<br />
Williamson Provincial Park on the south shore of Sturgeon Lake, and<br />
Young’s Point Provincial Park on the northwest shore, offer services<br />
including a combined total of almost 200 camping sites with playground<br />
areas, picnic sites with good drinking water, firewood, comfort stations<br />
with showers, electrical hook-ups, RV hook-ups, hiking trails and boat<br />
launches.<br />
A little east of Williamson Provincial Park lays the historic Edson Trail.<br />
Thousands of settlers travelled the trail from Edson in the south to Grande<br />
Prairie between 1911 and 1916 to claim farmland in the Peace Country.<br />
The junction of the Edson Trail and Grouard Trail are located near this<br />
location on Highway 43. The early pioneers had several stopovers<br />
including MacArthur’s Landing at Sturgeon Lake. There is also a historic<br />
Edson Trail log cabin located near the Waskahigan River in the Little<br />
Smoky area. The Trail fell into disuse when the Edmonton, Dunvegan, and<br />
British Columbia Railway extended to Grande Prairie. Two incredible<br />
books have been written about the Edson Trail and can be purchased at<br />
the Heritage Discovery Centre – 780-532-5790<br />
The Grovedale Fish Pond, Kakwa River, Southview and Swan Lake<br />
Recreation Areas described below are operated by the M.D. of Greenview.<br />
GROVEDALE FISH POND<br />
The Grovedale Fish Pond is located 30 kilometres south of Grande Prairie<br />
and 158 kilometres North of Grande Cache, and lies directly adjacent to<br />
Highway 40. The site provides stocked rainbow trout fishing and includes<br />
new family bathroom facilties, fire pits, bear-proof garbage containers,<br />
and picnic tables.<br />
KAKWA RIVER RECREATION AREA<br />
Kakwa River Provincial Recreation area is located 110 kilometers south<br />
of Grande Prairie and 70 kilometers North of Grande Cache. The site<br />
includes renovated waste facilties, fire wood, corral, a functioning<br />
manual water pump, fire pits and 6 picnic tables. This is a ‘Catch and<br />
Release’ fishing site for Trout, Grayling, and Whitefish. Fishing at this site<br />
is typically open from the beginning of June to the end of October and<br />
closes from the beginning of November to the end of May. Please see<br />
the current Alberta Fishing Regulations for details.<br />

SOUTHVIEW RECREATION AREA<br />
Southview Provincial Recreation Area is located approximately 45<br />
kilometers northeast of Grande Cache and 135 kilometers southwest of<br />
Grande Prairie. This site includes waste facilities and two concrete picnic<br />
tables. The site is very open and easily accommodates larger camping<br />
units.<br />
SWAN LAKE RECREATION AREA<br />
Swan Lake Recreation Area is located approximately 35 kilometers west<br />
of Valleyview. The lake is 140 hectares in size, with depths ranging from<br />
3.2 to 5.6 meters. The site has a graveled boat launch, parking lot, and<br />
day use area with picnic tables, fire pits and walking trails. It is a stocked<br />
water body with aerators installed since 1997 to prevent winter kill.<br />
Swan Lake is a very popular fishing destination with above average<br />
Rainbow Trout.<br />
HAMLET of DEBOLT<br />
Approximately 57 kilometers east of Grande Prairie on Highway 43,<br />
across the Smoky River, DeBolt is home to the DeBolt and District Pioneer<br />
Museum. The museum offers a collection of heritage buildings, including<br />
a barn, church manse, cabin, homestead, ice house, and more. All<br />
museum buildings are in Hubert Memorial Park in DeBolt, except the<br />
Legion Hall which is on Alberta Avenue. DeBolt holds an annual Heritage<br />
festival each August featuring a parade, fair, and activates for all. ‘The<br />
Centre’ is an expanded facility that encompasses the curling rink, hall<br />
and kitchen facility, library, meeting rooms and fitness centre. Creeks<br />
Crossing offers a 53 lot fully serviced residental housing development<br />
located on the south boundary of the Hamlet.<br />
HAMLET of RIDGEVALLEY<br />
Approximately 15 kilometers east of DeBolt is Crooked Creek, which<br />
offers famous donuts and cinnamon buns and an excellent ice cream<br />
stand at the general store. A few kilometers south of the Crooked Creek<br />
store is the vibrant Hamlet of Ridgevalley which offers a variety of<br />
business development, a school and arena. The Country Cottage Bed and<br />
Breakfast offers comfortable accommodations in the hamlet.<br />

HAMLET of GROVEDALE<br />
Located 21 kilometers south from Grande Prairie near the Nitehawk<br />
Adventure Park, is the energetic community of Grovedale which<br />
encompasses the Landry Heights subdivision. Grovedale is comprised of<br />
a general store, a convenience store, the Pioneers of Grovedale Area<br />
Museum, volunteer fire department, Penson School, hall and arena.<br />
Outdoor enthusiasts can go fishing in the stocked Grovedale Trout Pond<br />
for rainbow trout or go golfing on the 18 hole Grovedale Golf Course.<br />
HAMLET of LITTLE SMOKY<br />
The active Hamlet of Little Smoky, located halfway between Fox Creek<br />
and Valleyview off of Highway 43, is your next accommodation or<br />
camping stop. It is located near the confluence of the Iosegun, Little<br />
Smoky and Waskahigan Rivers, with unserviced camping at the Iosegun<br />
River Campground in the Waskahigan Provincial Recreation Area and<br />
serviced camping spots available at the Little Smoky Motel. In the<br />
summer boating, fishing, and hiking adventures await. In the winter,<br />
snowmobiling and fishing are excellent. Community members host<br />
events like the Country Music Jamboree that one cannot miss. Fossils<br />
have also been found in the Little Smoky area which include a mammoth<br />
tusk found in 1959. This place proves that good things do come in small<br />
packages.<br />
TOWN of GRANDE CACHE<br />
On Greenview’s most southerly boundary lies the Town of Grande Cache,<br />
180 kilometres from Grande Prairie via Highway 40. Grande Cache, with<br />
a population of about 3800 residents, is a feisty, creative community<br />
anchored by a diversified economy so that the residents can live, work<br />
and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer. Rafting companies and<br />
outfitters offer packages for all ages. Willmore Wilderness Park is a<br />
sanctuary for those who wish to explore the wilderness on foot, horse,<br />
mountain bike, or skis. Every August long weekend Grande Cache hosts<br />
the world renowned 125 km Canadian Death Race and DeathFest, a<br />

TOWN of VALLEYVIEW<br />
Approximately 345 kilometres from Edmonton, and 100 kilometres east<br />
of Grande Prairie, this community of 2000 is a flourishing service centre<br />
