It was nice to close the door
on 2009 and all the gloom and
despair that deep recession
brings and look forward to a
new year that is bound to be
one of change, and see if we
are out of recession as was
recently announced in the
media.
Our first big change is the end
of the government backed
"Scrappage Scheme" which
ends at the end of March,
which has been a terrific boost
for small car sales and won us
many new customers, plus
there's also a general election
to come which is bound to
bring change in some form for
us all.
As ever the car business keeps
on moving with its latest new
model launches. The latter part
of 2009 saw the launch of the
Skoda Yeti and the new shape
Subaru Legacy & Outback. This
month Skoda launches a new
Superb Estate followed later in
the year by the return of the
Fabia VRS, which we were lucky
enough to see on a recent trip
to the factory.
To celebrate the Superb Estate
launch we are having an open
night on Wednesday 24th
February where you can see
the car first before its official
UK launch date, and all the
other recently launched
models plus meet Guy Wilkes.
Skoda’s latest new young rally
talent.
2010 sees a change to the
"new" style number plate
format that has now been
going a decade. March 1st
sees ‘10’ instead of 07, 08, 09
as the 3rd & 4th digit then,
September 1st will see 60
instead of 57, 58 and 59.
March 2nd this year is the
anniversary of the opening of
our Subaru showroom -12
months that have really flown.
We’ve learned a lot in that year
and met many new customers,
making us feel very at home
with both Subaru and Isuzu.
We recently had the good
fortune to acquire the small
garage next door to us which
had started to look a little bit
tired over recent years, which
we will be re-developing
to create extra customer car
parking in the not too distant
future.
We hope you can make our
open night and that you enjoy
the newsletter and as ever look
forward to seeing you soon in

We all know how fast our weather can
change. One minute it’s a dry road, next

Eleven years after winning a Subaru
Legacy in a radio competition,
Middlesbrough man Chris Flynn has
traded in his beloved Japanese estate
car for a new Subaru Legacy.
Mr Flynn, who hadn’t owned a Subaru
prior to his lucky win on Classic FM,
found his first Legacy “absolutely
perfect” to live with and felt that a newer
version of the same model was the only
new-car choice for him. “In 11 years of
ownership not once did I have a single
problem with the car, so when I heard
about the government scrappage
scheme, and felt like changing the car,

Skoda find
the right Guy!
We get all revved up as Guy Wilks from Darlington
is named Skoda UK Motorsport driver for IRC
challenge.
Skoda UK Motorsport has chosen Guy Wilks and codriver
Phil Pugh to take on the Intercontinental Rally
Challenge (IRC). Skoda UK Motorsport will enter a
Fabia Super 2000 for Guy Wilks and co-driver Phil
Pugh on the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge
(IRC) and we’re backing the team all the way.
Guy, from Darlington in County Durham, is one of
Britain’s most exciting rally talents, having won the
British Rally Championship twice (2007 and 2008)
and finished runner-up in the 2005 FIA Junior Rally
Championship. The 28-year old driver won the RAC
MSA Rally of Scotland last November, driving a Skoda
Fabia S2000 in competition for the first time.
Phil, from Tywyn in Gwynedd, enters his eighth
consecutive season as Guy’s co-driver. The 39-year
old Welshman was British Champion in 2007, and his
experience and skill will be of significant importance
in the rallies which lay ahead.
Skoda UK Motorsport will contest selected rounds of
the IRC, beginning with the opening round of the
series, Rallye Monte Carlo (January 19-23).
“We are thrilled that Guy and Phil have joined the
Skoda UK Motorsport team and expect our loyal
customers feel just the same. We are anticipating
more people will come through our doors and sales
to increase as rally fans see what great cars Skoda
produces. said Tony Slack-Dealer principle.
In preparation for Rallye Monte Carlo, Guy tested a
Skoda Fabia S2000 on asphalt mountain roads near
Grenoble in south-east France just before Christmas,
completing around 62 miles (100kms).
Guy Wilks: “I am very excited about the season ahead
and driving for Skoda UK Motorsport in the 2010
Intercontinental Rally Challenge. Our victory in
Scotland last year showed what potential the Fabia
S2000 has. It’s a fantastic car to drive and it suits my
driving style. This year’s programme has come together
incredibly quickly, and everyone at Skoda UK
Motorsport is highly motivated to succeed. You can
guarantee that Phil and I will start every rally with one
thing on our minds – and it will involve driving as fast
as we possibly can!”
A timing lesson
A timing belt, or cam belt connects the crankshaft
to the camshaft(s), which in turn controls the opening
and closing of the engine's valves, which open and
close once every other revolution of the crankshaft.
The belt has teeth to turn the camshaft synchronised
with the crankshaft. In some engines, the timing
belt may also be used to drive other engine
components such as the water pump and oil pump.
Timing belts are typically covered by plastic timing
belt covers which require removal to carry out visual
inspection.
Engine manufacturers recommend replacement at
specific intervals. The manufacturer may also
recommend the replacement of other parts, such as
the water pump.
In an interference engine, or one whose valves extend
into the path of the piston, failure of the timing belt
invariably results in costly and, in some cases,
irreparable engine damage, as some valves will be
held open when they should not be and thus will be
struck by the pistons. Ouch!

The 4.2m-long Yeti is robustly compact,
with a near-vertical tailgate and a
pleasantly raised (though not high)
driving position. The car’s interior
package is highly impressive. The
upright seating position releases
impressive rear seat legroom (which
can be varied by sliding the rear seats)
and huge headroom. There’s also
impressive interior storage - large door
bins, a big glovebox, useful centre
armrest and various cubby holes.
VW’s new common-rail diesel is
superbly smooth and quiet – in fact,
you’d never know it was a diesel! It’s
all the more impressive as other car
maker’s Euro 5 compatible engines
have got noisier.
The engine is smooth and punchy and
can easily cope with four full-size
adults in a way that suggests this car
would make a fine long-distance
tourer. The most impressive aspect of
Yeti is the way it can slide off the
blacktop straight into serious offroading.
Its compact dimensions and
short overhangs are a great help, but
the Yeti’s enthusiasm and capability
in extreme situations is a revelation.
The impressive ‘off-road’ electronic
pack – which includes a very capable
hill descent control set-up – is a must
if you spend a lot of time in proper offroad
situations.

SUPERB
ESTATE
and the
winner is...
The unique design with the typical Skoda ‘face’, the
expressive rear section and the dynamic silhouette help
the new Superb Estate stand out clearly from market
competitors. The car commands respect not just because
of its practical qualities, but also on account of its style
and elegance.
The new Superb Estate is 4,838 mm
long, 1,817 mm wide, and 1,481 mm
high. Including the roof rails, delivered
as standard and available either
anodized or black, the car’s height rises
to 1,510 mm.
The outstanding load capacity is bigger
than anything seen yet in the segment,
the luggage compartment holds 633
litres, expanding to a cavernous 1,865
litres when the rear seats are folded
down. The width of the tailgate is large
enough to accommodate bulky items.
The low loading sill, a mere 600 mm
above the ground, makes handling
baggage easy.
The wealth of interior equipment and
fittings in the five-door estate matches
that in the car’s predecessor, with
numerous smart details added.
This is the first time it has been possible
to equip a Skoda vehicle with the KESSY
keyless locking and ignition system. A
transmitter in the body of the key
communicates with the control unit in
the car and unlocks the doors when the
handles are touched. The car can also
be locked without using a key or remote
control central locking by pressing a
button on the external handle.
The engine can be started and turned
off with a button located on the righthand
side of the steering wheel column.

OCTAVIA
VRS
Everyone knows the Octavia is a great car. After all, you don’t win the 2007 Auto
Express Driver Power ‘Car of the Year’ title and What Car? Best Small Family Car of
the Year, 2006, without good reason. However, there is something even more
accomplished in Skoda’s arsenal: the scorchingly quick Octavia vRS.
Available in either hatchback or estate guise
with the choice of a 200bhp petrol
engine or a 170bhp diesel .

The new Octavia has a more purposeful
and aggressive appearance. Sports
bumpers fore and aft, a boot spoiler
(hatchback only), twin chrome exhaust
pipes, red brake callipers and 18-inch
‘Zenith’ alloys give the vRS the look of a
genuine hot hatch.
On the inside, bespoke ‘vRS’-branded
half leather seats, a sports steering
wheel and alloy pedals remind the driver
of the car’s racing pedigree. Other
standard equipment includes a 6 CD
autochanger, branded sill protectors,
tinted glass, cruise control and a trip
computer.
Unlike many of its rivals in this hotly
contested and adrenaline-charged
market segment, however, the Octavia
is also supremely practical. The hatch
offers buyers either 560 litres of stowage
space (seats up) or 1,350 litres (seats
folded), but it’s the estate with its
maximum boot capacity of 1,620 litres
that really steals the show.
The vRS range does present buyers with
a bit of a conundrum, however. There’s
not only the choice between practical
hatch and uber-spacious estate, but
they’ll also have to decide between
diesel and petrol power.
