Back to School season this
August welcomed over
1580 students and their
families to the CAG
campus! We celebrated
new beginnings on the
first day of school and
gathered with parents to
establish our routines for
the work ahead of us. This
August, we also had the
pleasure to host a
homecoming for the 50th
class reunion for the class
of 1967.
Some of the members of
the class of 1967 are
families of founders. Their
class was the first 6th
grade class to graduate on
our current campus.
Members traveled from
near and far and gave
their class banner to the
school as a pledge and
reminder that all we need
is love to continue CAG’s
legacy of impacting the
world in meaningful ways.

Though the reunion was a nostalgic
glimpse into CAG´s past, it was very much
about living mission and an affirmation in
the confidence for the future of the school.
It was also a reminder of the importance
of our strategic plan in paving the way for
the Pre-Kinder class of 2031 and all others
in the future. These classes are the
signature of CAG´s values and are
equipped to define their legacy in the
decades ahead in ways that inspire
leadership, creativity, innovation and
contribution.
SERVICE DRIVEN
The symbolism of the class of 1967 and
2031 on the same campus is an important
one.
The difference in
contexts and decades
are striking, but CAG´s
values are the common
threads that connect
these generations.
This school year, we
have articulated the
profile of CAG learner as
a result of our strategic
plan. VIDAS, the
acronym for our CAG
learner profile, is at the
heart of teaching and
learning at CAG. This
profile is the
embodiment of our
commitments
establishing a firm
foundation for
leadership,
entrepreneurship and
contribution. The
qualities defined by
VIDAS are relevant no
matter the decade, but
ones that reshape,
evolve and prove to be
resilient as the world
changes.

Building the framework for the future is a
responsibility all CAG stakeholders share and
work we can accomplish together by staying
centered, connected and responsive to our
students. The 2017-2018 year is an important
year for CAG as we roll-out our plans for a
great CAG future keeping all the young VIDAS
at the forefront of our work. As we have
shared with the community, CAG has pride in
its traditions and is optimistic as we journey
towards our vision.

Starting at the end of September, I will launch
the CAG General Director Series: Partners in
Growth which will be a “Town Hall” type
meeting where I invite you-parents, students,
alumni, teachers and community leaders to
attend. Help us impact the future of the
school you have chosen for you and your
family by discussing as a community the
areas you hope change at CAG, while
affirming what must stay the same.

CELEBRATING
STUDENT POTENTIAL

Each year, there are a group of
extraordinary students in 11th and
12th grade that make up the
"Programa de Bachilerato
Advancado" (PBA) at CAG.
During their two years at our
school, these students excel due to
their intelligence, dedication and
discipline. One outstanding
member of the current 12th grade
PBA group is Elder Raúl Guzmán
Romero.
"Since he started last year, the
talent he possesses for Math
became apparent particularly as a
result of his PSAT scores."
Over the summer, Elder participated
in the Guatemalan National Science
Olympics organized by the San Carlos
University together with 9 other
competitors from the PBA program.
Each summer for the past several
years, Ms Margarita Nuñez, HS
teacher and CAG graduate of 1991,
has taken students during the break to
compete in the National Olympics.
The students have another type of
opportunity to challenge themselves in
Science. During the 2017 competition,
Elder passed the first 2 rounds
qualifying him for the finals that will
take place in September.
In addition, Elder was chosen to
represent Guatemala in the
International Math Olympics (IMO
2017) this past summer in Río de
Janeiro, Brazil.
CAG is extremely proud of Elder not
only because of what he has achieved
but also of the values of hard work and
drive that he demonstrates as a
students inside and outside the school.
It truly is a privilege to have him as a
student and share in his finding his
potential.

Supporting Student Growth
Over the next few weeks, your child will take tests
called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP). At
CAG, we administer these MAP assessments for
students in grades 3-10 to determine your child’s
instructional level and to measure academic
growth throughout the school year, and from year
to year in the areas of reading and mathematics. As
a school that is student centered, teachers can use
the results to inform instruction, personalize
learning, and monitor the growth of individual
students. Principals and administrators can use the
results to see the performance and progress of a
grade level or entire school. The MAP results are
one indicator that we use as an institution to track
our progress towards empowering students to
achieve their full potential. We also use the
assessment results to benchmark our students
with students in both the United States as well as
other international schools around the world.
MAP tests are unique in that they are administered
online and then as the student answers each
question the test adapts to be appropriate for your
child’s level of learning. As a result, each student
has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain
a positive attitude toward testing. MAP tests are
not timed, and students may take as much time as
they need to complete them. Most students take
about one hour to complete a MAP test. Once all of
our CAG students have completed the tests, your
student’s results will be uploaded into Powerschool
under the Student Portfolio tab.

Hello Goodness
Over the summer, CAG tienditas experienced a "face-lift" in
the Middle School/High School area as well as on the
Montañita. This remodeling was carried out in conjunction
with the Hello Goodness project and the school. The goal of
the project together with APM is to continue to provide
healthy and delicious food options for students and also
improve the infrastructure and service.

SWIMMER COMPETES IN
JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
The Swim Team and the Swim Booster are extremely excited to share the good news
that Miguel T., from 10th grade, was chosen to attend the Junior Championships that
started August 21 and run through August 30 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He will be competing
in 6 events representing Guatemala together with 10 other athletes. All the swim team
applaudes Miguel's accomplishment, how hard he has trained and his love of the sport
that fills us all with hornet pride!

CAG SHOUT OUT
On July 17th, Banco Industrial had the honor of hosting Mr. Juan Diedrich Oltmann Niemann
Enge, Class of ’62, for the raising of the flag.
He was chosen as an exemplary citizen due to all of his accomplishments including:
President of the Board of Directors at Fundación de Universidad del Valle de Guatemala,
President of the Scout Association of Guatemala, member of Rotary Club and many others that
have contributed to the well-being of Guatemalan society. Mr. Niemann is an alumnus of CAG,
Class of 1962. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Fundación de Universidad del
Valle de Guatemala. His daughter and and son are also CAG Alumni, from the class of 1992 and
class of 1993 respectively. His grandkids are third generation CAG students. We are proud of
Mr. Niemann and all of his accomplishments.
