BRADFORD COLONY 1 & 2
(BC1&2) NEWS FROM THE BOARD
PARK:
We have found broken glass bottles, soda cans etc… littered in
the park. While all our residents are welcome to use the park, no
alcoholic beverages are allowed in the park and residents must
cleanup and take all their garbage when leaving.
ASSESSMENTS:
If you have past due assessments not paid (only if you have not
received attorney letters and your account has not been sent to
our attorney), we urge you to contact our new PMG manager -
Shannon Abernathy (713-329-7130) and work out some type of
payment plan ASAP. Once your account is sent to legal, you may
only discuss the matter with our attorney. PMG is not allowed to
discuss your balance any longer. Your outstanding balance goes up
every month when you ignore it. While we certainly can be understanding
of various circumstances, we cannot ignore the fact that
every property has a fair share of paying the assessment to keep
up the maintenance of our subdivision. The Board has no choice
but sent some of the severely past due balances to our attorney to
collect through legal actions, using funds other residents have paid
to try to collect these amounts instead of on other improvements.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT:
October is National Night Out. We plan to have some activities so
we can get to know our neighbors. Details will be announced later.
We will also post it on our website once the plans are solidified.
VOLUNTEER AND OUR NEW MANAGER CONTACT INFO:
If you are interested in volunteer in various projects in our neighborhood,
please contact our Board members or our new community
manager Shannon Abernathy (713-329-7130 - her direct phone #).
BRADFORD COLONY SECTION 3
(BCS3) 2018 HOME OWNERS ASSESSMENT
The Board and Management Company will be working on the
budget for 2018 over the next month. Although it is difficult to
predict the final number at this time, every effort will be made to
keep the 2018 Assessment as close as possible to this past year’s
$285 number.
We anticipate having the management company send out the 2018
Assessment billing in late November. Look for more information
on this important HOA issue in the upcoming Newsletters.
Plus please plan for this upcoming bill and include it in your financial
planning. Note that the management company can set up
payment plans to pay the assessment over time if that is your desire.
(BCS3) SAFETY CONCERNS
As the year draws to an end, the days are getting shorter and
visibility decreases. Let’s be very careful as we drive through the
neighborhood - we have a lot of children living in BCS3 and we have
need to be alert for their safety.
Remember that the speed limit is 20 MPH in the neighborhood.
“Let’s be careful out there!”
(BCS3) CONTACT THE BOARD
As is the case with everything in our small neighborhood, every
resident should feel free to contact any Board member as to any
issue or question that you have about BCS3. Contact information
for all the Board members is located inside of this publication.
If you have any suggestions of what you would like to see as improvements
to our park, please submit them by 9/30/17 to our
new manager Shannon Abernathy (713-329-7130) or come to our
September meeting on 9/12/17 at 7 PM at the upstairs meeting
room in Kroger (Hwy 6 and West Little York). We would like to take
into considerations any suggestions from our residents.
CHARLESTOWN COLONY
(CHC) Notes from the Board
Our annual Association meeting should be held
Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at the MUD 102
building located at 15300 Falmouth Houston,
77084. WATCH FOR THE OFFICIAL NOTICE FROM
PMG as this might change. Assuming no changes,
this is the same place as last year. The MUD 102
building is back behind the townhomes behind
the Kroger near Hwy 6 and W. Little York. Google
maps will get you there. Sign-in for the meeting
starts at 6:45 PM with the meeting starting at
7 PM. Meetings rarely take more than an hour.
Some people to hang around and visit, others
are gone as soon as the voting is over.
You should receive a letter this month from
Principle Management Group (PMG), our neighborhood
management company. This letter may
look like a bill, it might look like a violation notice,
after all, the management company uses the
same envelope for all mailings. Regardless, be
sure to open and read the notice. A proxy will be
included with the meeting notice letter. A proxy
lets a homeowner participate in the meeting
without actually attending the meeting.
All Association meetings require the establishment
of a quorum. A quorum of residents,
present either in person or by proxy, is required
to conduct business. There are multiple ways to
submit a proxy and help the Association achieve
a quorum. You can return the proxy to the management
company by mail (snail) or fax. Their
mailing address and fax number should be on
the proxy. Check the mailing for details. You can
give your signed proxy to a neighbor or Board
member who will attend the meeting.
Even if you plan to attend the meeting, please
submit your proxy. Things come up, life is busy, the
Association meeting gets forgotten and a quorum
is not met. If the proxy is already submitted, your
vote is still counted even if you don’t attend. If
you are able to attend in person, your proxy will
be returned to you so you can vote in person. You
can use the proxy to place your own vote for the
Board positions or whatever Association business
is represented on the proxy. Or the proxy allows
whomever you designate on the proxy to vote on
your behalf. You can designate a specific Board
member, the person who brings your proxy or
the management company to cast your vote. Be
sure to sign the proxy. It isn’t valid without your
signature. If you know your block code, go ahead
and add it to the proxy (Your block code might
be on the meeting notice you receive or you can
find the block code on your local tax documents).
After establishing a quorum there will be an
introduction of the Board & Management representative(s).
The meeting minutes from last year
will be read and approved.
The heart of the meeting is the election of two
Board positions. Remember that anyone can run
for these Board positions. Serving on the Board is
a great way to be involved and give back to your
community. Any of the current Board members
will be happy to let any interested resident know
what kind of time commitment is involved. Residents
can be nominated at the meeting.
What to know how the annual assessment is spent?
After the election the treasurer’s report will be
presented. Will our Association dues increase for
2017? Come and be one of the first to find out. And,
just like hearing the State of the Union from the
President of the United States, we will hear the state
of the neighborhood from our Board president.
Got something you want to say about the neighborhood?
Want to volunteer to write the newsletter?
What to organize a spring neighborhood gathering?
The last item on the proposed agenda is an open
discussion. Any resident with something to talk
about (both good and bad) has 3 minutes to present
before the Board and the residents in attendance.
So please block out a little time and come to
the meeting.
(CHC) YARD OF THE MONTH
These sweltering August days of sun, sun, sun
without seeming end are enemies for Houston
gardeners. Early risers can water and weed before
the true heat of the day, but cannot avoid
the sweat of hard work to keep lawns and flowerbeds
vibrant.
August yard-of-the-month prize is awarded to
our neighbors at 14315 S Stoneygrove Loop who
managed to look fresh and clipped with lavender,
fuschia and white vincas as well as pentas fronting
a hedge of golden lime variegated euonymus.
A large pyramidal arborvitae looks velvety green
on the left and complementing crepe myrtles
in white and dusty rose rise up on the right
blending nicely into their adjoining neighbor’s
watermelon crepe.
Thanks to everyone who sweats in the heat to
keep our neighborhood a joy to view whether
driving, riding or walking. Yard of the month winners
receive a gift card to a home improvement
store. Will your home be next?
(CHC) PARKING - AGAIN
Some residents of Charlestown Colony participate
in a program called “Nextdoor.” Per the “Nextdoor”
website, it is a free, private social network
for neighborhoods. The site requires registration
with your email address and other information.
The current newsletter author is not a participant.
Maybe the next author will be. But this author has
heard that many of the complaints and comments
regarding Charlestown Colony on “Nextdoor” revolve
around parking. We all live in a fairly tightly
packed neighborhood. Some homes have very
little room to park in front of their house but often
these have very long driveways. As households
change a home that maybe started with just two
cars that fit in the garage might have grown into
four car household where none of the cars fit in
the garage. Should your home fall more into the
latter group, please be courteous of those around
you. If you must park in front of a home that is not
yours, be sure to let that homeowner know. Most
of our driveways (except for section one homes)
can easily accommodate two cars and often four
cars fit if they hang over the sidewalk. In the City of
Houston, hanging over the sidewalk is a ticketable
offense. This author does not know if this extends
to the county. Cars hanging over the sidewalk do
force walkers to use the street but if this means
the walkers and the children playing are more
visible, maybe this is a preferable solution. If this
parking makes it easier for buses, yard trailers and
emergency vehicles to pass, then it is a good thing.
The parking problem is not unique to Charlestown
Colony. Drive through any neighborhood in the
evening and you see much the same thing. We live
in an area where the only means to the necessities
of life is a vehicle. Be courteous and remember that
yours is not the only vehicle that parks in the street.
(CHC) TRASH TALK
Thanks to all who remembered Labor Day as a notrash
pick-up day! Recycling only happens on Monday
so keep your recycle bin out of sight of the street (a
deed restriction requirement) until next Monday. The
next no-trash pick-up day is Thanksgiving. Christmas
falls on a Monday this year and New Year’s Day is also
a Monday. You know what this means…
(CHC) LABOR DAY AND FLAGS
Many thanks to the Boy Scouts for putting out flags.
Labor Day is the last day they put out the flags. Did
you know that when hung vertically over the center
of the street, the flag always has the union stars to
the north on an east/west traveled street or to the
east on a north/south traveled street? Check out
the Texas Almanac for any information on flying the
US flag. Do you believe that Texas is the only state
that can fly their flag at the same height as the US
flag? If all the flagpoles are the same height, all flags
should be approximately the same size and fly at
the same height with the US flag to the observer’s
left (flags own right). If one flagpole is higher than
the other, the US flag goes on that pole. There are a
lot more rules than I remember from history class.
(CHC) WATER, WATER, WATER
Everyone should have received the “Waterworks”
publication from West Harris County Regional
Water Authority. (www.whcrwa.com) Why do you
care? This is one place to find information about the
pipeline project that will eventually run through our
subdivision. The site has maps. Look at the “second
Source Project” to see what looks like the project
that will impact our subdivision. Municipal Utility
District 102 (Charlestown Colony’s MUD) is part of
Precinct 8. The Board for this group meets the 2 nd
Wednesday of each month at 20111 Saums Rd,
Katy, TX 77449. The minutes of their meetings are
online. This might be a good place to monitor the
project and see when it will impact our subdivision.
(CHC) SEEKING REPLACEMENT
NEWSLETTER AUTHOR
Our resident newsletter author has been at the job
for more than ten years. (Yes, 10 years. More than
many people have lived in the subdivision.) While
this author has lots of experience and older copies
of newsletter to draw on for content, this author
feels it is time for a new voice. Do you like to write?
Have a few spare hours early in the month? Are you
active in the local community and have information
to share? Contact the CCCIA Board using their
contact information in the Important Numbers
section of this publication. The volunteer position
(all the neighborhood positions are volunteer)
takes as long or as short as you want depending
on how much you write and the topics you decide
to research and present. All newsletters are sent
to the Board prior to publication. Our “retired”
author would be happy to show you what has
been done in the past
CONCORD COLONY
(CC) GARAGE SALES
Concord Colony residents are not to have more than two garage sales
per year.
(CC) HOA request
Dear Concord Colony Residents,
Your Board of Directors and Community Manager strive to make this community
look its best at all times. We are asking you to please take a good
look at the exterior of your home and yard. Landscape your flowerbeds if
needed, trim your trees and bushes if needed and also reduce the clutter.
If the paint on your home is chipping or fading, please consider repainting
(approved colors only). However, before you start painting, you must submit
an ACC application to the management company for review.
If you have any questions or need an ACC application please do not hesitate
to contact your community manager, Linda Bartel, at 713-329-7100 or by
email at l.bartel@pmghouston.com.
Thank you in advance.
(CC) HOA MEETING
Our meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at the MUD
#102 Building which is located at 15300 Falmouth Ave. under the Colonies
Water Tower. Watch for our meeting notice signs posted throughout our
neighborhood. We encourage you to attend.
(CC) STREET LIGHTS
If a street light is out or remains on all the time, get the numbers off the
pole, address and call Centerpoint Energy at 713-207- 2222 or go to www.
centerpointenergy.com/outage and you can report the issue online.
(CC) COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT CONTACT
Each and all of the residents in Concord Colony should feel free to contact
your community manager with concerns, questions or an issue in Concord
Colony. The contact information for your community manager is located
inside the back cover of the newsletter under “Important Colony Numbers.”
(CC) DEED RESTRICTIONS
Please remember that deed restrictions are strongly enforced and any
outside construction or major landscaping changes to your home must be
approved by the Architectural Control Committee (ACC). ACC contact information
for Concord Colony is on the inside back cover of this newsletter.
GEORGETOWN COLONY I
(GC1) Garbage Cans
Many neighbors have been storing their garbage cans in view from the street. This is
in violation of the deed restrictions and appropriate actions are subject to corrective
action.
Also, please remember to place garbage curbside after 6 PM, the night before pickup.
(GC1) Garage Sales
According to the State Comptroller’s office, garage sales are permitted only twice annually.
If more than that, it will be assumed that a business is being operated out of home,
which is in direct violation of the deed restrictions and necessary action will be taken.
(GC1) LOST AND FOUND PETS
The first thing to do if you find a lost dog that does not have a tag, is to take it to any
vet’s clinic or Petsmart and have it scanned for a micro chip. This is the fastest way to
get the dog back to its owner. If it does not have a micro chip, please look for signs to
make sure the dog gets back to its rightful owner. A dog that is left to wander is subject
to being hit by a car, abuse or starving to death. Those
(JC) COLONIES NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER
Labor Day marked the end of the swimming season and the closure of the
Colonies Neighborhood Pool. We hope you were able to take advantage
of some of the new amenities and improvements up at the pool this year,
such as:
• New pool furniture (tables, chairs, picnic benches, chaise lounge chairs
and umbrellas)
• Restriped parking lot to make parking a bit more efficient
Continued improvements are being planned to further the value of our
joint Colonies community complex.
(JC) COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to both Jen and Gail who have been
doing a wonderful job of planning our Jamestown community activities for
the past two years. While we are sad to see them pass the torch, at the end
of this year, this is a wonderful opportunity for another set of homeowners
to have fun planning events for the community. Their last event will be our
annual Christmas gathering. If you are ready to serve your community,
contact Jen or Gail and they’ll be happy to assist!
Jen.gonseaux@gmail.com or the.cains1116@gmail.com
(JC) BACK TO SCHOOL TRAFFIC AWARENESS
As our precious children start back to school, it is time to remember to be
extra careful while driving in our neighborhood, especially around buses
loading and unloading. If you see someone not properly observing the
speed limit or other safety rules in the neighborhood - say something. Here
are some guidelines published by the National Safety Council:
Sharing the Road with School Buses
If you’re driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if
you were driving behind a car. It will give you more time to stop once the
yellow lights start flashing. It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus
that is stopped to load or unload children.
• Never pass a bus from behind - or from either direction if you’re on an
undivided road - if it is stopped to load or unload children
• If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended,
traffic must stop
• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children;
stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus
• Be alert; children often are unpredictable and they tend to ignore hazards
and take risks
Sharing the Road with Bicyclists
On most roads, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as
vehicles, but bikes can be hard to see. Children riding bikes create special
problems for drivers because usually they are not able to properly determine
traffic conditions. The most common cause of collision is a driver
turning left in front of a bicyclist.
• When passing a bicyclist, proceed in the same direction slowly and leave
3 feet between your car and the cyclist
• When turning left and a bicyclist is approaching in the opposite direction,
wait for the rider to pass
• If you’re turning right and a bicyclists is approaching from behind on the
right, let the rider go through the intersection first and always use your
turn signals
• Watch for bike riders turning in front of you without looking or signaling;
children especially have a tendency to do this
• Be extra vigilant in school zones and residential neighborhoods
• Watch for bikes coming from driveways or behind parked cars
• Check side mirrors before opening your door
By exercising a little extra care and caution, drivers and pedestrians can
co-exist safely in neighborhoods and school zones.
(YTC) COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE
23 rd . This is always a fun time for the neighborhood, we have a lot of traffic
throughout the weekend. Please keep the safety of yourselves and others
in mind. Try to buddy up and never allow anyone in your home. We all love
other people’s stuff, dig deep, set up a table and make some extra cash,
early birds will be waiting.
(YTC) YORKTOWN COLONY STREETLIGHTS
It’s soon going to look a little brighter around here at night. It has taken
awhile, but we have signed the contract to begin replacing our old streetlights
with new LED ones, so they will be a great addition to the neighborhood.
Look forward to more great improvements in the near future.
(YTC) PUMPKIN PATCH Oct. 28 th , 11 AM to 1 PM at the park
Come join us for the fun at the park, pick and paint a pumpkin from the patch,
we will provide music, games, snacks and a great prize for the best costume
and of course CANDY! Come out and enjoy all the fun. Volunteers are welcome
and individually wrapped bags of candy are always in need. Please get with
Martha at the party or anytime before, it helps when we all pull together to
(YTC) YARD OF THE MONTH
Yard of the Month is dedicated to improving the quality of living and appearance
of our community. In turn, we look to celebrate those who do a
superior job in maintaining their yards in such a way that they enhance the
overall curb appeal of the entire community.
the time and effort to keep their yard maintained beautifully. Thanks for
keeping our neighborhood one to be proud of. We would like to encourage
all our neighbors to join the efforts of this homeowner in keeping their yard
and home beautiful. Enjoy your $50 gift card.
(YTC) BOARD MEMBERS
The Board members are volunteers, here to protect our investments and
keep property values up. Please respect their privacy and do not show
up at their home unannounced. The Board members phone numbers are
listed in the newsletter. If you have a question, call the Management Co. If
it is not resolved, then call a Board member.
(YTC) KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL
Kids are back in school, please be aware of the school zones and cell phone
usage. Stop for the buses loading and unloading, never go around when the
STOP sign is extended from the driver’s side. Parents, talk to your kids about
walking down the middle of the street once they get off the bus, this could
become a very dangerous situation if the wrong person is behind the wheel.
(YTC) TRASH TALK
When mowing your lawn be sure to sweep our blow any clippings or debris
left in the street, don’t sweep them into the storm drains, this will only
cause drainage issues later. This seems to be a growing problem in the
neighborhood!!! Again, this is a simple fix.
(YTC) VACATION WATCH
If you are planning a vacation for an extended time you can go to www.
(YTC) HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU BUDGET
FOR HOME MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS?
Your Home’s Age, Condition and Location Will Affect Your Budget. How
much money should you budget for home maintenance and repairs? Here
are the two rules of thumb that help guide this calculation, as well as a
list of home-related factors you should consider as you decide how much
you need to save.
The 1 Percent Rule
One popular rule of thumb says that one percent of the purchase price of
your home should be set aside each year for ongoing maintenance. For
example, if your home cost $300,000, you should budget $3,000 per year
for maintenance.
That doesn’t mean you’ll literally spend $3,000 every year. It just means
that, on average, over a span of a long time period (10 years or more), you’ll
spend around $3,000 annually, according to this rule of thumb. Some years
you’ll spend far more; a roof replacement, for instance, will cost $4,000 -
$8,000. Other years, you’ll spend far less.
Of course, this popular rule of thumb isn’t totally valid. Your market timing
doesn’t impact your maintenance budget. If you happened to buy your
home at the peak of the housing bubble, your maintenance costs won’t skyrocket.
Similarly, if you bought your home at a steep discount at the bottom
of the housing market, your maintenance budget shouldn’t be affected.
The underlying price of your home and its repair costs, in other words, are
“independent variables.” They correlate only insofar as they’re both impacted
by the cost of labor and materials in your particular geographic area.
The Square Foot Rule
Another rule of thumb says that you should budget $1 per square foot per
year for maintenance and repair costs. If you own a 2,000 square foot home,
for example, budget $2,000 a year for maintenance and repairs (again, over
a long-term annualized average).
This rule of thumb makes slightly more sense than the “1 percent of purchase
price” rule. The more square feet you’re managing, the more you’ll
need to spend. One drawback to this rule, though, is that it doesn’t account
for labor and material costs in your area. In certain parts of the nation,
contractors are significantly more expensive.
HELP HORNE ELEMENTARY!
An easy way to help our school is to turn trash into cash. Horne
Elementary participates in the Box Tops for Education program.
Some of the grocery items we use have Box Tops on them. Each Box
Top is worth 10 cents for the school. You would pick up a dime on
street - so cut out the Box Tops and donate to Horne! You can find the
Box Tops logo on hundreds of products like Cheerios®, Hamburger
Helper® and Kleenex®, in almost every aisle of the store. To donate
the Box Tops, simply bring them to the reception desk at Horne,
give them to a family with children who attend Horne or contact this
year’s coordinator, Candi Hardin, for pick up. Her email address is
chardin@marykay.com and her cell phone number is 832-878-6302.
Let’s collect them all year long and give Horne a big boost to start
the new school year!
CFISD EARNS TEA’S MET STANDARD RATING
FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT YEAR
Once again this year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the largest district in
Texas to have all eligible schools receive the Met Standard designation
(highest possible ratings) in the state accountability system.
To receive a Met Standard rating, campuses must meet the applicable
Index target on Index 1 or 2 and Index 3 and 4:
• Index 1: Student Achievement - Measures how many students
passed the STAAR at the current passing standard;
• Index 2: Student Progress - Measures how many students made
progress from 2015 to 2016;
• Index 3: Closing Performance Gaps - Measures the progress of
students in the economically disadvantaged student group along
with the two lowest-performing student groups from the previous
year; and
• Index 4: Postsecondary Readiness - Measures how many students
passed the STAAR at the final recommended standard on two
or more tests (all levels) and graduation rate, graduation diploma
plan and a postsecondary component (high schools only).
“High expectations, believing all students can be successful, and
doing whatever it takes to help student achieve is the attitude you
find at all of our campuses,” said Dr. Linda Macias, CFISD associate
superintendent of curriculum & instruction and accountability. “Our
campus administrators, teachers and district team are committed
to providing our students with quality instruction, monitoring their
success and offering support when needed. Our schools have once
again achieved the ‘Met Standard’ rating and reached the target for
CFISD CAMPUSES EARN 2017 DISTINCTION DESIGNATIONS
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released its annual distinction
designations for campuses earning the accountability rating of
Met Standard. Campuses that receive an accountability rating of
Met Standard are eligible to earn distinction designations, which
are awarded for achievement and progress in the following areas:
Academic Achievement in English Language Arts/Reading;
Academic Achievement in Mathematics;
Academic Achievement in Science;
Academic Achievement in Social Studies;
Top 25%: Student Progress;
Top 25%: Closing Performance Gaps and
Postsecondary Readiness.
Each campus is assigned to a unique comparison group made up of
Texas schools that are most similar to it. The groups are determined on
grade levels served, size, percentage of students who are economically
disadvantaged, mobility rate. It also includes the percentage of English
language learners, students receiving special education services and
students enrolled in an Early College High School program.
A campus earns a distinction designation if it is in the top quartile
of its comparison group for Top 25% student progress and Top 25%
closing performance gaps and at least 33 percent (high schools)
and 50 percent (elementary and middle schools) of the indicators
used to award the distinction in the other areas.
Campuses earning one or more of these distinction designations
met rigorous criteria to earn the highest level of recognition in the
state accountability system.
Eight CFISD campuses earned all possible distinction designations
for their respective campus levels:
Hancock, Holbrook, Lee, Pope and Sampson elementary schools;
Arnold Middle School and
Cypress Park and Langham Creek high schools.
“Our commissioner of education has previously shared that earning
one or more Distinction Designations is noteworthy and should be a
source of pride,” said Dr. Linda Macias, CFISD associate superintendent
of curriculum & instruction and accountability. “We are certainly
proud of all of our campuses that earned distinction designations
and recognize the commitment of our administrators, teachers and
our community to providing our students with a quality education.
Striving for excellence is a common thread among our campuses and
earning all the Distinction Designations available to a campus is a
tremendous accomplishment.”
CHILDHOOD OBESITY MONTH
September is National
Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.
This is an opportunity to learn about
ways to prevent and address this
serious health concern.
Childhood obesity is a major public health problem.
• Children who have obesity are more likely to have obesity as adults.
This can lead to lifelong physical and mental health problems, including
diabetes and increased risk of certain cancers.
• Children who have obesity face more bullying and stigma.
• Childhood obesity is influenced by many factors: too much time
spent in sedentary activities suchas television viewing; a lack of bedtime
routine leading to too little sleep; a lack of community places
to get adequate physical activity; easy access to inexpensive, high
calorie snacks and beverages; and/ora lack of access to affordable,
healthier foods.
Ways parents can help prevent obesity
and support healthy growth in children.
• Energy balance is important. Parents can make sure children get
adequate sleep, follow recommendations on daily screen time,
take part in regular physical activity and eat the right amount
of calories.
• Substitute higher nutrient, lower calorie foods such as fruit and
vegetables in place of foods with higher-calorie ingredients,
such as added sugars and solid fats.
• Serve children fruit and vegetables at meals and as snacks.
• Parents can ensure access to water as a no-calorie alternative
to sugar-sweetened beverages.
• Help children get the recommended amount of physical activity
each day by encouraging them to participate in activities that
are age-appropriate and enjoyable.
• Addressing obesity can start in the home, but also requires the
support of communities. Courtesy cdc.gov
1 cup butterscotch chips
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 9x13
inch baking dish. In a large bowl, combine bread, milk, sugar,
butter, eggs, vanilla and butterscotch chip, mixture should be the
consistency of oatmeal. Pour into prepared pan.
Bake in preheated oven 1 hour, until nearly set. (It should have a
“thigh wiggle” or wiggle as much as a well endowed thigh.) Serve
warm or cold. Source: http://allrecipes.com/
HEALTHY COWBOY CAVIAR
This healthy cowboy caviar recipe (also known as Texas
caviar) is made with all-natural ingredients! Serve it as a dip,
salsa or salad Recipe yields a lot of “caviar,” about 8 cups.
Ingredients
2 (14-ounce) cans black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained,
or 3 cups cooked black-eyed peas
1 (14-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained,
or 1 ½ cups cooked black beans
1 ½ cups fresh corn kernels (about 2 ears of corn),
or 1 (14-ounce) can corn, drained
1 ½ cups chopped tomatoes (I used about 4 Roma
tomatoes,
about ¾ pound)
1 medium green, red, orange and yellow bell pepper
¾ cup chopped red onion (about ½ small red onion)
½ cup chopped cilantro, leaves and stems
1 to 2 jalapeños, ribs removed, seeded and finely
chopped
1 avocado (optional)
Italian dressing
1/3 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar or lime juice
2 medium cloves garlic, pressed or minced1
to 1 ½ teaspoons salt, to taste
1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon maple syrup or honey
1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Colonies | September 2017
Instructions
In a large serving bowl, combine the drained black-eyed peas, black
beans, corn, chopped tomatoes, bell pepper, onion, cilantro and jalapeño.
If you’ll be including avocado, wait to dice it until you’re ready
to serve the dip, so it doesn’t turn brown in the meantime.
In a cup, whisk together the dressing ingredients until emulsified.
Drizzle the dressing over the serving bowl and toss until well mixed.
Season to taste with additional salt and pepper. For best flavor,
let the mixture marinate for at least 20 minutes before serving. If
you’re adding avocado, mix it in just before serving.
NEW LAWS IN TEXAS EFFECTIVE IN 2017
The Texas legislature met from January through May and passed
several new laws as well as changed laws that will go into effect in
2017. They range from texting while driving, drones, to swords, to
protecting good Samaritans. Below are a few laws that are effective
immediately or going into effective September 1 st .
Texting While Driving
Effective September 1 st , there will be a statewide band on texting
while driving. The bill bans drivers from texting while a vehicle is moving,
making it a misdemeanor offense punishable by a fine ranging
from $25 to $99, with penalties up to $200 for repeat offenders. The
law allows drivers to use their phones for GPS and would not allow
violators to be fined under both state law and local ordinances.
People Allowed to Carry Swords
People can carry bowie knives, swords, daggers and spears in public
under a law that goes into effect September 1 st . Current law allows
people to carry knives no more than 5.5 inches long. While it will be
okay to carry the larger weapons in public, it is illegal to take into
bars, schools, colleges, churches, sporting events and numerous
other facilities.
Amnesty for Sex Assault Witnesses
Students who witness and report a sexual assault while they are involved
in illegal activity, such as drinking, would be given amnesty.
Recording Higher Ed Sex Assaults Electronically
Effective immediately, this law will allow college employees and
students to submit electronic and anonymous reports of sexual
assaults to their institutions.
Ridesharing Returns
Last year some ridesharing companies, like Uber and Lyft, were
mandated to fingerprint drivers before they could pick up customers
in their cities. Effective immediately, this new law, bans cities
from enforcing similar measures on these types of ridesharing
companies.
Cheaper to Carry a Gun
Effective September 1 st the fees for carrying a gun in Texas are now
cheaper under Senate Bill 16. The law lowers fees for a first-time
license to carry a handgun from $140 to $40 and the renewal fee is
also reduced from $70 to $40.
Be Careful Where You Fly your Drone
Effective September 1 st the state has banned unmanned aircraft, like
drones, over correctional and United States Immigration, Customs
Enforcement detention facilities and large sports venues. Exceptions
include unmanned aircraft authorized by a law enforcement agency
or with the permission of the operator of the sports venue.
David’s Law
The new state law on cyber bullying makes it a Class A misdemeanor
to harass or cyberbully someone under age of 18 through text
messages, social media, websites or other means with the intent
to cause them to commit suicide or harm to themselves.
Voter ID changes
If don’t have a valid photo id, voters will be able to cast their ballots
if they show some other documentation with their name and
home address (Bank statement or Utility bill). Voters would also
need to sign an affidavit saying there is a good reason they don’t
have a valid photo ID.
No More Straight-Ticket Voting
Straight ticket voting is out! Voters will no longer be allowed to cast
their ballot for an entire slate of Republican or Democratic candidates.
You will now have to vote for each candidate individually.
Lottery Winners
Effective September 1 st . Individuals who win prizes of at least $1
million can choose to remain anonymous and prohibit the release
of all personal information to the public.
Civil Protections for Good Samaritans
Effective September 1 st a new law protects good Samaritans
from civil lawsuits if they break in a vehicle if they have reason to
belief the person is in imminent harm, has first notified 911, uses
appropriate amount of force and remains with the individual in a
safe location. This replaces current law that leaves good Samaritan
open to civil suits.
No More Suspensions for Young Students
Effective immediately. Schools can no longer suspend students
below third grade. Instead public schools need to discipline children
in a way that enforces positive behavior.
More Frequent Background Checks for College Referees
Effective September 1 st sport officials registered with the UIL will
have to undergo criminal background checks every three years
instead of just one.
Help for Relatives Caring for Abused Children
The state will now pay $350 a month to families caring for abused
or neglected children they are related to. Currently the state pays
families $1,000 initially and $500 a year.
Attacking Police Officers is Now Officially a Hate Crime
If a person attacks a former or current law enforcement officer
they could be found guilty of committing a crime. The change puts
crimes against law enforcement in the same category as crimes
based on a person’s race, color, disability, religion, national origin,
age, gender or sexual preference.
