What better time to visit New Brunswick than
during Canada's Sesquicentennial, to be immersed
in its history while experiencing its attractions?
One may witness the rich military history in
Fredericton by merely strolling through the
Historic Garrison District. The original military
compound (1784-1869) contained 70 structures of
which only four remain in the two-block district.
Housing the former officers’ quarters is the
Fredericton Regional Museum. A stone and
wrought-iron fence entrance leads you into
Barracks Square, a National Historic Site.
Assorted attractions and activities include shops,
tours, concerts, artisans creating, and the changing
of the guard ceremony.
A bronze plaque on the street side wall of the
barracks honours the famed 104th Regiment of
Foot. Departing Fredericton on Feb. 16, 1813,
with more than 500 men, they headed to Quebec
City en route to Kingston (arriving on April 12) to
support the British troops. This epic march in
frigid conditions constituted a distance of more
than 1,100 kilometres (685 miles) in 52 days. This
arduous winter trek to reinforce the Upper Canada
troops ultimately resulted in the Dominion of
Canada.
