Side Trips
I
decided that I could be a fair-weather
football fan this fall.
My son played his senior season last
year, and as a parent you don’t want to
miss any of that. Cold.
Wind. Rain. Snow.
(Shudder) We’ll sit
through just about
anything when our
child is out on the
field. But this year
with no one playing,
I said I was only going
to games in the
early season, while the
weather was still nice.
My husband photographs
Friday night
football from the sidelines,
so I always sit with other moms in the
stands to watch the games. When it began
to rain late Friday afternoon Jeff assumed I
was going to stay home. But about an hour
before kickoff it seemed the rain was letting
up, and the weather report I listened to said
skies were clearing. I found myself texting
a friend to see if she was still going to the
game. “I am if you are,” she replied, so the
plan was set.
As I was ready to leave my house for the
three-block walk to the football field, it began
to sprinkle. I grabbed an umbrella “just
in case.”
Good thing. It rained nearly the entire
game. That was the bad news. The good
news (sort of) is that the rain kept most
people away, so there was plenty of extra
space in the bleachers around me and I
didn’t have to be concerned about my umbrella
dripping on anyone sitting near me.
My feet were a different matter. That’s
where all the rain water from the umbrella
ended up, and they were soaked before half
Iowa time. Information
BIRTHDAY PARTY
Clay County Fair celebrates with
Centennial Birthday Bash
The Clay County Fair is celebrating
100 years in 2017. They’ll be hosting
a birthday bash on Sunday, Sept. 17
at 7 p.m. PHOTOS BY RYLAN HOWE
The Clay County Fair will close this year’s week
of festivities with its Centennial Birthday Bash.
In honor of 100 years of entertaining hundreds
of thousands of people, they’ve decided to borrow a
bit from the fairs of old.
“If you study fair history you’ll find that the idea
of grandstand events have been around since the
1960s and ’70s. But before that, especially in the
’40s, you had these spectacles of music and vaudeville
variety shows,” said Jeremy Parsons, CEO and
manager of the Clay County Fair. “It was really like
‘America’s Got Talent’ before ‘America’s Got Talent.’”
The Centennial Birthday Bash will be held Sunday,
Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for adults while children ages 12
and under get in for free.
“Those old spectacles had numerous traveling
professional acts performing so we decided to recreate
that,” Parsons said.
There will be the Moto Maniacs performing a variety
of daredevil stunts including the Cyclone Cycle,
a contraption involving a motorcycle spinning a
flying aerialist; the Sky Cycle, where a daredevil and
a fearless acrobatic ride a motorcycle up a high wire;
the Moto Sphere, a high-speed motorcycle chase
inside a large steel-caged sphere and much more.
Jennifer Smith, also known as the The Cannon
Lady, will launch herself from a 27-foot cannon 60
feet high and 125 feet through the air towards her
safety net.
Comedian C. Willi Myles will have the audience
bursting with laughter while Sean Emery will entertain
the crowd with his circus skills, comedy and
showmanship.
The acts will be accompanied by the Karl King
Band, who originally performed at the fair for
nearly four decades starting in 1922.
King was a well-known circus march composer
and the band continues to operate out of Fort
Dodge.
Kicking off the whole night will be the high
school choirs from Spencer, Clay Central-Everly and
Sioux Central.
A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will actually
be donated to the music departments at those
three schools as well as Spencer Community Theatre
who will have actors dressed in period clothing
during the birthday bash.
Several other local acts will also be on hand to
entertain the crowd throughout the night.
The fun-filled evening ends with the largest fireworks
display ever seen at the Clay County Fair.
“This is going to be a unique night and a once-ina-lifetime
type of event people won’t want to miss,”
Parsons said. F
Words cannot express my gratefulness for this (VNUS) procedure. I
JAM BAND
The Clay County Fair is all about
family fun for everyone. One
family from Branson, MO, will
be helping provide some of the free
entertainment that leads to that family
fun, while also having quite a bit of
fun themselves.
The Rolf family includes parents
Matt and Lisa, and their three children,
who together make up the band,
Matt’s Family Jam.
They are among the strolling acts
and will perform three time per day
throughout the fair. The 12:30 p.m.
and 3:30 p.m. time slots will be You don’t know when you’re going to
“strolling performances” taking place come upon it.”
at different spots around the grounds. The 6:30 p.m. performance will take
“The strolling acts in general are place on the KICD Courtyard Stage.
part of the $180,000 in free entertainment
at the fair,” said Jeremy Parsons, stage and have been performing to-
The Rolfs are no strangers to the
Clay Count Fair CEO and manager. gether for several years.
“It’s a unique thing we can offer that “We’ve been playing music together
you can run into around every corner. pretty much our whole lives and we
Matt’s Family Jam set to stroll the
Clay County Fair this week
started doing fairs about seven years
ago,” said Adrienne, 15, who plays
multiple instruments in the band,
including guitar, fiddle, ukelele and
keyboard.
Matt has the longest history of
the family in performance, having
been involved in the “Matt and
Robyn Show” with his sister since he
10-years-old performing around the
country and even Canada and on
famous stages such as the Grand Ole
Opry in Nashville.
Matt married Lisa, a music educator,
and together with their first son Collin,
moved to Branson in 2000 when
Matt got a job at the Jim Stafford Theater.
Two more children, Adrienne and
Benjamin, soon followed and all three
kids grew up visiting the theater and
watching shows.
It was more or less just a matter of
time before they picked up the trade
themselves.
Collin, 18, plays lead guitar, while
Benjamin, 12, handles the drums.
Matt plays bass guitar and Lisa brings
the saxophone to the stage. And of
course everyone sings in fantastic family
harmony.
Upon leaving the job at the Jim
Stafford Theatre, Matt and Lisa turned
their focus to Ozark Productions getting
back into the swing of producing
concerts.
A few years later, the family began
making appearances locally in Missouri,
before going full-time in 2011.
Matt’s Family Jam has since played all
over the country including states as far
as Florida and New York, to nearby
Ohio and Wisconsin.
They’ve been to the Clay County
Fair more than once before this year.
“First of all, it’s amazing,” said Collin
of The World’s Greatest County
Fair. “We love that they have so much
to offer and you can tell the people are
very proud of their fair. It’s so special
that we get to be a part of it, especially
during the centennial year.”
According to Benjamin the group
sings a mix of country, rock, pop, gospel
and much more. Anyone taking
in their show shouldn’t have a hard
time finding a few songs they know
well and will often be able to sing and
dance right along. In fact, the band
puts out hula hoops and encourage
everyone to simply have a great time.
“People should come ready to have
a good time,” Adrienne said. “We
want to encourage everyone to have a
good time as a family.”
From their family to yours, this year
at the Clay County Fair, be ready to
spend some time enjoying the music
of Matt’s Family Jam. F
Song
for another
time
Old Dominion comes to
the Clay County Fair
A
rising country act will be taking
the stage at the Clay County
Fair.
Old Dominion has actually been
booked far in advance of this year’s
fair as their popularity has skyrocketed
over the past couple years.
“If you’re a new country fan there
is probably not a better band out
there,” said Jeremy Parsons, Clay
County Fair CEO and manager.
Old Dominion is a five-member
ensemble based out of Nashville
consisting of lead vocalist Matthew
Ramsey, Trevor Rosen on guitar and
keyboards, drummer Whit Sellers,
Geoff Sprung on bass, and guitarist
Brad Tursi.
They released a self-titled EP in
October 2014, which featured the
singles “Shut Me Up” and “Break Up
With Him.”
Their first full-length studio album,
“Meat and Candy,” was released a
little over a year later and was called
a “deceptively smart, occasionally
cheeky, stellar debut,” by Entertainment
Weekly, according to the band’s
website.
The album was recently certififed
gold and included No. 1 singles with
“Snapback” and “Song For Another
Time.”
Each of the past two summers has
seen Old Dominion open on
Kenny Chesney’s “The Big
Revival” and “Spread
The Love” tours before
they embarked on
their own headlining
tour in the fall
of 2016 to promote
“Meat and
Candy.”
In 2016, they
were also named
ACM New Group of the
Year, ACCA Breakthrough
Group of the Year, AIMP Songwriter
Artist of the Year and Music
Row Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
“No Such Thing As A Broken
Heart” is the band’s
most recent single coming
from their sophomore
album, “Happy
Endings,” which came
out just a couple
weeks ago.
“Our goal for
grandstand entertainment
is to
always have something
for everyone,”
Parsons said. “With Old Dominion
it’s been very intersting
to see their rise in success and we’re
very excited to have them.” F
Fair educates visitors about ag
Visitors have several opportunities
to see the animals
and machinery of Iowa
agiculture at the Clay County
Fair. No place more so than at
Grandpa’s Barn.
Open throughout the run
of the fair, Grandpa’s Barn
gives visitors young and old a
chance to get up close and personal
with a wide range of farm
animals from pigs and goats, to
calves and kittens.
“We take seriously our job
of educating the public about
agriculture,” said Jeremy Parsons,
Clay County Fair CEO
and manager. “Grandpa’s Barn
allows us to provide that education
through interaction with
animals and plots of crops like
corn and soybeans.”
Many of the same animals
and opportunities that have
been available since its inception
in 2010 will be on hand
again this year.
There will also be combine
and tractor simulators available
to give folks a shot at virtually piloting
big-time farm equipment.
“The barn’s going to be
pretty much like it’s been in
the past. We haven’t changed a
whole lot,” said superintendent
George Moriarty. “We’ll have
small bottle fed calves that kids
can feed as they come through.
They really love that.”
Moriarty noted that there will
also be baby goats on hay bales
jumping all over the place, and
other small animals that the
children can hold with the help
of one of the many 4-H Club
volunteers.
“It’s a truly hands-on experience,”
Moriarty said.
“They are always a big hit with
the kids. The potbelly pigs too,”
Moriarty said. “Most of the
animals are usually for sale too,
like the calves, mother sow and
baby pigs.”
There may be many interesting
animals roaming around
the barn, but it’s the people that
Moriarty loves the most.
Iowa State University Extension
and Outreach’s Ag-Citing
Program brings local third- and
fourth-grade students to the
fairgounds where they spend
four hours touring several
buildings, having a sack lunch
and learning all about agriculture.
“We walk in concert with that
program, and Grandpa’s Barn
is definitely a highlight, it’s really
exciting for them,” Moriarty
said. “Watching the expressions
on the kids’ faces is great. We
even have a group of blind
students who’ve come through
the past four years and watching
them interact with the animals
and the volunteers working
with those kids is terrific.”
It’s not just the young children
and students that bring a
smile to Moriarty and the volunteers
at Grandpa’s Barn.
“We have a life-size mock cow
that can be milked and everyone
can give it a try. It’s so fun to
see grandmothers that sit down
to give it shot and say ‘Oh my, I
haven’t done this for 50 years!’”
Young or old, well-versed in
agriculture or new to farm life,
Grandpa’s Barn has plenty of
Scarecrows on parade
Great Akron Scarecrow Festival on Saturday, Sept. 16
Fall is unofficially here with the
passing of Labor Day. While many
are sad about saying goodbye
to warm days, the freedom of summer
vacation and family barbeques, others
are saying a happy hello to the new
season.
Some of those people are the organizers
of the 17th annual Great Akron
Scarecrow Festival. The celebration is
set to take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
on Saturday, Sept. 16.
The festival will be held in Akron
City Park and is free to attend. It
will feature a scarecrow decorating
contest, homemade food and baked
goods, kids’ games, a petting zoo and
craft vendors.
The event is hosted and organized
by the Akron Friendship & Service
Club, which is a non-profit charitable
and service organization that is part
of the General Federation of Women’s
Clubs.
The theme for the festival this year
will once again be “Dive into Fall.”
“We chose it to highlight the Akron
community’s efforts to raise money
for renovations and improvements
of the city swimming pool. The city is
in the design and fundraising stages
of the project and we’re excited to
commit a portion of festival proceeds
toward it,” said LeAnne Philips, a
member of the Akron Friendship &
Service Club. “The city is also donating
a 2018 family season pass to the
scarecrow that best fits the ‘Dive into
Fall’ theme. We were able to donate
$2,000 toward the project in 2016 and
looking forward to contributing more
after this year’s event.”
Money is raised by tickets purchased
for the kids activities, food
sales, fees from the 40-plus vendors
and the auction of the scarecrows.
One of the biggest draws of the
event is the scarecrow decorating
contest and auction. Contestants of
all ages are encouraged to create and
decorate a scarecrow. They can be
any shape, size and fit any theme.
Those scarecrows will be judged and
awarded prizes in a number of categories
and age brackets. The scarecrow
auction will then take place at 2 p.m.
Typically there are around 50-75
scarecrows in the contest.
The whole day couldn’t run without
a large number of volunteers, according
to Philips.
“It takes 40 to 50 student volunteers
to keep all of the activities running
all day. Akron-Westfield FFA students
help set up and staff the petting zoo
(which will include a zebra and
camel this year), the Art Club does
face painting, and students from the
A-W dance team, National History
Day program and Johnson Juniors
4-H Club work at carnival games.”
Philips said. “It is fun to see the older
kids who have great memories of the
festival now coming to help.”
Last year, the Friendship & Service
Club was able to donate and support
projects in the school and communities
with the funds raised during the
event. In total, they donated more
than $10,000 to around 25 groups
and projects following the 2016 Great
Akron Scarecrow Festival.
In addition to allowing them to do
good things for the community, the
event itself, is a great way for the community
to celebrate the new season.
“For me, the best part is seeing the
park full of families enjoying the day
together. I love seeing the creative
scarecrows each year, especially this
year with new prize categories. There
are so many great vendors, too — so
many fall crafts, branded goods and
homemade goodies make it the perfect
way to kick off the fall season.”
Philips said. F
Birding enthusiasts will be listening
They’ll also be scanning the skies.
Monday, Sept. 11, will be the last in
Birding on the Green takes birdwatchers
to Brooks, an Auduboncertified
first Mondays of the month from May
events. The age range was mostly
adults, but there were some youth and
families who attended an event.
Over the summer the attendees
were able to spot some interesting
birds.
“We were able to see so many awesome
birds this summer. I think my
favorite morning, was spotting four
green heron and a red tailed hawk,”
said Bryanna Kuhlman, the environmental
education coordinator at the
Dickinson County Nature Center.
“However at every Birding on the
Green this summer, we spotted over
30-50 bird species.”
Last month they saw these varieties:
Canada geese, wood duck, trumpeter
swan, osprey, northern cardinal, killdeer,
green heron, willow flycatcher,
mourning dove, eastern kingbird,
purple martin and lots more.
In August there were a total of 40
bird species identified and 483 birds
spotted.
During the final Birding on the
Green they are hoping to spot some
different birds.
“During our Sept. 11 event, I hope
that we will see some migratory birds
heading south for the winter,” Kuhlman
said. “However, in the fall this
can be a challenge as migration of
different species varies greatly and is
more spread out this time of year. It
also can be more challenging because
birds have molted into their less colorful
plumage.”
If you aren’t sure birding is for you,
go ahead and give it a try. You never
know if you might be a secret ornithologist.
“I think that birding fascinates
people because you are able to see
so many awesome species of birds
within such a small area. I love our
birding programs because it allows
our attendees to hear and see the
biodiversity of animals that truly surround
us,” Kuhlman said. “Although
we focus our efforts on bird species,
birding is also a wonderful time to
view our mammals and amphibians
native to Iowa.” F
