8 COMMUNITY NEWS
When 21-year-old Nick Russo, an employee at Reagle Dodge in Pen
Argyl, PA., decided to start collecting much needed supplies for the
Hurricane Harvey
victims in Texas
he had no idea
what was about
to transpire. He
couldn’t even have
begun to imagine
how quickly
the Slate Belt
community would
Pictured the Slate Belt Loves Texas crew and Northeast
come together in a
time of desperate
need for the people
in Texas. Nick, is
also a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, although his
unit was not deployed to Texas he knew he still wanted to help in some
capacity. Nick, along with his father Joseph Russo, were determined
to help in whatever way they could after Nick spoke with his friend
James Discon, a former resident of Stroudsburg, PA., who now resides
in Cypress, Texas. He described to Nick in a phone conversation first
hand the sheer devastation the people in Texas were left facing after
Hurricane Harvey.
Nick told his boss Justin Ott, General Manager, at Reagle Dodge,
his plan and Justin was immediately on board to help in any way he
could. Reagle Dodge, is also a leasing agent for Penske Trucks. Penske
generously donated a 26-foot box truck to be used for the effort. Justin,
also used his own Dodge pick-up truck to help transport the supplies.
Justin, was having dinner at friends Jake and Danielle Klaver's home,
owners of Klaver’s Automotive & Towing, in Bangor, PA, and mentioned
Nick’s plan. They too immediately enlisted to help in any way possible.
Klaver’s Auto was also used as a drop-off site for donations. Together
they all began posting on Facebook to let people know that Reagle
Dodge and Klaver’s Auto would be designated drop off-sites for
donations for the hurricane victims in Texas. People began to share the
posts about the donations. What happened next was far beyond any of
their expectations. OPERATION: SLATE BELT LYVES TEXAS had begun.
Businesses and residents of the Slate Belt made donations of clothing,
baby items, water, pet food and cleaning supplies, toiletries, gas cans,
non-perishable food items and monetary donations. The donations
literally poured into Reagle Dodge non-stop until Friday. The 26-foot
box truck was filled to capacity by Wednesday night. A friend of Otts,
and the Klavers, Bob Abbott, posted on a site used by truckers, that his
friends were in need of a trailer. John Gino, replied and he offered to
graciously donate his tractor trailer and his time to drive to Texas to help
deliver the supplies. This amazing,
kind soul, a complete stranger at
the time, was in Illinois heading to
Rochester, New York, when he read
and replied to the post on Thursday.
He delivered his load to New York
that night and headed straight to
Reagle Dodge, where he loaded up
his trailer and was ready to roll.
Initially, the plan was to leave for
Texas on Friday morning, September
1st. With the overwhelming,
outpouring of love from the
Pictured L-R Nick Russo, Justin Ott,
Dawn Abbott, Danielle Klaver, Jake
Klaver, and Bob Abbott with some of the
donations
community the donations continued to come and the departure time
did not happen until Friday evening. The staff of Reagle Dodge, their
families, and friends, all worked tirelessly sorting, and packing the
trucks. On Friday evening, Nick Russo, his dad Joseph Russo, John Gino,
Justin Ott, Jake and Danielle Klaver, and members of Northeast Search
and Rescue, loaded up with the supplies and OPERATION: SLATE BELT
LYVES TEXAS, was en route to their destination in Cypress, Texas,
approximately 1,700 miles away, a 23 hour drive.
After driving on little sleep, the OPERATION: SLATE BELT LYVES TEXAS
crew arrived safely at their destination on Sunday, September 3rd,
at approximately 6:03 p.m. in Cypress, Texas to an overwhelming,
welcome, that included a banner! They delivered the supplies to
Second Baptist Church in Cypress Texas, which was transformed into a
distribution center. They also took some of the donations and personally
delivered them to hard hit Beaumont, Texas.
On Tuesday, September 5th, the crew began the return trip back home
to the Slate Belt, but not before heading back to Second Baptist Church
to make a few more deliveries to areas in need. What these individuals
have done, and what they have seen, will not be forgotten anytime soon,
by them, or by the residents of the Slate Belt. Thank you, does not even
begin to express how grateful we all are for the personal sacrifices they
made. They have made our entire community very proud! We watched
your live videos, waiting in anticipation for the next update; you made
those of us in the community feel as though we were right there with
you. Whether your donation was one of supplies or monetary, no matter
how big or small, you helped make a difference. This community played
a huge part in the success of OPERATION: SLATE BELT LYVES TEXAS.
We sometimes forget how many good, kind, and loving people there
truly are in this world. We saw that in a matter of days, a community
can come together and that love and kindness still exist. Do not allow a
tragedy or a natural disaster to be the only reason we come together. We
should live this daily. God Bless Texas and God Bless the Slate Belt!

The Real Estate Guys
“What is Title Insurance &
Why do you need it?”
When you buy a property the most important
task that yourAttorney or Title Company will
perform is to have the Title of the property
searched. If this title search reveals recorded
defects, liens, or encumbrances upon the title they The DeCesares
are reported to you. There are numerous defects
that may affect the title. The most common issues found are unsatisfied prior
mortgages, easements, taxes owed, and deed restrictions. Less frequent
issues could be forgery, fraud, clerical issues, incorrect legal descriptions, Will
related issues, and many more.
If any of these deficiencies are found, they must be remedied prior to
settlement. This becomes a joint effort between your Attorney, Title Agent,
Realtor, and you.
Now you are through the search process, and you have resolved any issues
that may have come up, your representative will now acquire Title Insurance.
This is actually an insurance policy that you purchase with a one-time fee…
part of your closing costs. It is demanded by the lender. The cost of the policy
is determined by the price of the real estate being purchased. In the event
that ownership of your property is ever challenged, the insurance company
will defend your possession of the property and assume the legal costs of
that defense. Make sure you buy an “Owners Policy” and not just a “Lender’s
Policy”. This policy will cost about 10% more than the lender’s policy, BUT, in
the event of a title flaw the Insurance company will only protect the lender,
and not you, unless you have this type policy. This coverage will last for as
long as you and your heirs own the property. In the event that any challenge
to your property proves to be legitimate, title insurance will be responsible for
the costs to correct the flaws as the policy provides.
If you are buying the property with cash you are not obligated to do a search
or buy title insurance. It is foolish, however, not to do so.
Monroe County Historical Association Free Program
The Monroe County Historical Association is pleased
to announce a free program on the history of the
Pocono resort industry. Retired East Stroudsburg
University professor, Dr. Lawrence Squeri, will give his
presentation, “Pocono Resorts: The Nineteenth Century
to Today” as part of the Third Thursday Lecture Series.
The program will be Thursday, September 21, 2017,
Better in the Poconos,
Dr. Squeri re-creates the
Pocono vacation scenes
and the people who
brought it to life, not only the innkeepers, souvenir sellers, laborers, and
service workers, but also the community leaders and visionaries who
promoted and guided the vacation economy.
The Third Thursday Lecture Series is free, but reservations are
The club was formed in 1953 through Penn State. It is truly a gardening
club, emphasizing growing skills. With rare exceptions, all flowers used in
arrangements must be grown, not purchased, by the members. The group
meets at 7:00 pm on the 1st Tuesday of each month in the Salem UCC
Fellowship Hall, 2218 Community Drive, Bath PA. September's meeting
will be held on the 5th, featuring a "Make It Grow" presentation from J.R.
Peters Fertilizer. New members, whatever their level of experience are
always welcome. This is a great way to learn gardening basics or to share
tried and true gardening techniques.
CHIA SEEDS
By Jackie Talero-Rueda,
The Crunchy Mom
Chia means “strength” in the Mayan language
and runners and warriors would use them as fuel
while running long distances or during battle. Chia
seeds have made a comeback and very popular amongst the health
community. Chia seeds are a nutrient dense superfood. They are rich
in fiber, proteins, omega-3 fats, beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and
minerals. Minerals such as phosphorous, manganese, calcium, sodium
and potassium. To provide a comparison, 3 tablespoons of chia has, 15x
more magnesium than broccoli, 6x more calcium than whole milk, 30%
more antioxidants than blueberries, 2x more potassium than bananas.
Three tablespoons also contains 9 grams of protein (more than 1 egg)
and 15 grams of dietary fiber. Now that you know what a nutritional
punch these seeds have it’s time to learn what health benefits they
have.
• Digestion: Chia seeds are high in dietary fiber and help promote
bowel regularity. The rich fiber content helps people feel more full
quicker because it absorbs a considerable amount of water and
immediately expands in the stomach when eaten.
• Energy and Weight management: Clinical studies have proven that
chia curbs hunger and suppresses appetite, which can also lead to
weight loss. Chia seeds promote energy, increase metabolism and help
shrink visceral (belly) fat. Since they are also rich in protein this makes
them an excellent food for athletes. Instead of going for a sugary sports
drink take some chia seeds in water instead! Always drink a lot of water
when consuming raw chia seeds.
• Diabetes and heart: Studies from University of Litoral in Argentina
found that chia seeds helped stop and reverse diabetes. Chia seeds
also regulate cholesterol and lower blood pressure making it important
to consume for heart health.
• Skin and teeth: Chia seeds pack so many nutrients like calcium,
zinc, phosphorous and Vitamin A. These nutrients are essential for
strong and healthy teeth. The antioxidants in chia seeds repair skin and
help prevent future damage.
Eating too much chia seeds can cause stomach discomfort so always
start slow and consume a lot of water. You can eat chia dry or soaked.
When you soak them they turn into a gelatin like pearl. They make a
great addition to oatmeal, cereal, baked goods, or smoothies. Many
chia drinks are now being sold on the market. They are quite pricey but
you can easily make your own!
Chia Seed Drink
1 cup of the juice of your choice (I like pomegranate)
1 cup water
3 TB chia seeds
Warm the water, put in a cup and add 3 TB of chia seeds. Stir well until
the chia seeds are evenly dispersed and start to swell. Cover and put
cup in the refrigerator. Let sit overnight.
The next day, get your cup out of the fridge. Your chia seeds should be
blown up in size and gelatinous. Your “water” should now be a thick gel.
Mix 1 cup of your chia seed gel with 1 cup of
the juice of your choice and mix well. This recipe
serves 2.
Enjoy!
We The Resilient
by Robert L. Martin
We rise, we fall, then rise again.
We dust ourselves off, then we begin
To work, to rebuild, to follow the plan,
As if tragedy never came into our midst.
Tragedy, the bearer of two different seeds,
One that motivates our instinctive resilience,
And the other that causes us to give up hope,
As we all lie down and idle away our dreams.
We arose with the call of the motivation seed.
It blossomed in our hearts as we came to life.
The nine eleven disaster wanted us to lie down,
But we came together; yes we, the resilient.
Involve Kids in Meal Prep
Moms face a number of challenges when trying to get their kids to
eat more fruit and vegetables. According to a recent study conducted
by Cans Get You Cooking, canned foods help a majority of moms (76
percent) get fruits and vegetables on the table, and into kids’ diets.
Another way to encourage kids to eat healthy meals is to include
them in meal preparation, which also teaches skills like measuring,
ADOPT US - FLUFFY & PINOCCHIO
Meet our very persuasive girl FLUFFY. She
seems to have special kitty powers that make
you want to love her. And feed her! Sweet girl
has a bit of a weight problem and is on a weight
loss formula to help her lose those extra pounds.
For this reason Fluff is in her own kitty condo--
she was eating all the food in the free-roaming
cat room. So now she is by herself but she loves
the company of other cats. If you are looking
for a friendly, loving, sweet, happy, adorable,
amazing best friend, look no further. Fluffy is 3 years young, spayed,
and up to date on shots. Her bags are packed and she's ready to go
home. Come meet Fluffy today!
We cannot tell a lie...PINOCCHIO is the perfect kitten companion!
Like his namesake from the movie, Pinocchio is a little boy who
loves to play, play, play. A typical kitten, this sweet boy will run,
chase, leap, swat, roll, pounce and
play-hunt by the hour. Then he
crashes for a nap to end all naps,
only to do it all again later. All that
Nine-year old Tyler Carlson was
recently rushed to the emergency
room at St. Luke's Hospital due to an
allergic reaction to milk. The diagnosis,
Anaphylactic Shock, a severe allergic
reaction that can cause death. Thankfully,
Tyler is fine and is back home after a
brief hospital visit.
His family and friends immediately
wanted to shower Tyler with gifts to let
him know how much they love him and
how happy they were that he was okay.
Tyler was very grateful but decided he
did not want toys and gifts for himself.
he wanted to give to other children who
were sick. He quickly turned the experience into a positive one by asking
his family to help other children in the hospital. He made a video, while
at the hospital explaining what had happened to him and why he wanted
to help other children that were sick and hospitalized, his video was
shared on his mother's business facebook page www.facebook.com/
graceonbroadwaypa. What started out as a sweet gesture from a nineyear-old
boy has turned into an overwhelming outpouring of love from
family, friends, the community, and total strangers.
Toys, books, and monetary donations have arrived in support of Tyler's
effort. Tyler plans to continue
collecting toys and gifts to be
distributed at St. Lukes Hospital
to the Pediatric unit. If you are
interested in making a donation of a
toy or gift in support of Tyler's effort
donations can be dropped off or
mailed to Tyler Carlson c/o Grace on
