These days, image factors are important for the economic and tourist appeal of a city. Freiburg has gained an
international reputation in such fi elds as solar engineering, traffi c and transport policy, as well as environment
and climate protection. Freiburg’s pioneering and model projects have been rewarded with prizes and high visitor
numbers to such groundbreaking constructions as the world’s fi rst energy self-sustaining solar building, the Heliotrope,
the solar village created by the solar architect Rolf Disch, or the zero-energy houses of the Vauban neighborhood
– and the world’s fi rst football stadium with its own solar plant.

Shopping in Freiburg
A stroll through the lively old town of Freiburg is very worthwhile. Here, alongside large stores
and specialised shops you will also fi nd fashion boutiques, perfumeries, jewellery shops,
book shops, art and antiques stores, and toy or leather stores. In one of the many souvenir
shops you are guaranteed to fi nd a postcard that captures Freiburg’s charm perfectly.
Numerous side streets, or “Gässle”, divert from the main shopping street and invite you to
explore the historical and culinary side of Freiburg. The typical Freiburg streams, or “Bächle”,
are sure to catch your attention; this network of tiny open canals runs through the entire city.
Stroll through the weekly market located on Münsterplatz and visit the colourful booths on the Franziskanerstrasse,
where North African and Indian goods are on sale, or stroll through the large shopping arcades like
the Black Forest City (Schwarzwald City - Schiffstrasse) the Karlsbaupassage/ Karlsbau arcade (Karlsplatz) and the
Bursengang (Rathausgasse).
These shopping streets are worth visiting
• Kaiser-Joseph-Straße
“Kajo” is the Freiburg’s main shopping mall - a car-free boulevard with a variety of
jewelers, fashion stores, sports-wear retailers, shops selling exquisite porcelain, and
three large department stores. More shopping passages, lanes and streets branch
off from here.
• Salzstraße
Salzstrasse leads past leather, jewelry and fashion stores to Augustinerplatz, where
you will encounter the glass vault of the “atrium”, a passage with numerous fashion and culinary attractions.
• Obere Altstadt, Oberlinden
Here you will fi nd a variety of smaller shops which offer everything from art supplies to jewelry and ladies’ and
men’s fashion.
• Konviktstraße
Dealers in antiques are primarily located on Konviktstrasse, a street with its narrow medieval houses. Besides, this is
where you will fi nd textile art and elegant boutiques.
• Schusterstraße
Here you will fi nd a rich supply of leather ear, antique books, art pieces and much more!
• Bertoldstraße
Bertoldstrasse leads past bookshops, the town theatre, and Cinemaxx Movie Palace.
• Rathausgasse
In Rathausgasse you will fi nd gold and silver goods, fashion and shoes.
• Grünwälderstraße
In Grünwälderstrasse you will fi nd Freiburg’s “Market Hall”. Where printing machines once used to rotate, more than
20 enterprises offer an international range of foods, apart from select champagnes, fresh fi sh, and vegetables.
• Gerberau und Fischerau
These two parallel streets invite you to stroll and linger. Hotels, restaurants and myriad small boutiques can be found
here.

Wood Rope Garden Freiburg
As the name indicates, Waldseilgarten (Wood Rope Garden) lies in the middle of Mooswald in Freiburg’s
town district of Rieselfeld. In addition, the rope elements are integrated into the natural population
of growing trees. The ample constructions offer a combination of high-wire elements and ground
stations of various types and diffi culties. For example, a balance beam can be crossed in lofty heights.
A gigantic cable railway line leads past the crowns of American red-oak trees. The whole group crosses
a “swamp” on the ground, or climbs through a spider’s web. The adventure education events promote
social competences, for example, responsibility, capacity for teamwork, confl ict-handling skills, or
competence in making decisions. The Seilgarten is opened for individual events only. You will receive a
