The original Harmonie-Lichtspiele picture house was opened in 1927<br />

as an Art Deco fi lm theatre. Under the direction of UFA, the old<br />

Harmonie building was pulled down and replaced with six modern<br />

cinema auditoriums and a glass-roofed foyer in 1992. Since being<br />

taken over by Michael Wiedemann in 2008, Harmonie has been run<br />

as an art house cinema.<br />

adds to <strong>Freiburg</strong>’s ‘cultural mile’ on Bertoldstraße and is conveniently<br />

located. CinemaxX <strong>Freiburg</strong> is easy and af<strong>for</strong>dable to reach either<br />

by tram or bus (stopping at ‘Stadttheater’). For those travelling by car,<br />

plenty of parking spaces can be found in the nearby multi-storey car<br />

Friedrichsbau-Lichtspiele picture house was opened on Easter Sunday<br />

on <strong>16</strong> April 1911, and at over 100 years old is one of Germany’s<br />

oldest cinemas. The Friedrichsbau cinema has been run as an art<br />

house cinema by Michael Wiedemann since 1998.<br />

The “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Kommunales Kino <strong>Freiburg</strong>” association was<br />

founded in 1972. Since moving to the Alter Wiehrebahnhof (1981),<br />

which provided almost perfect premises, a ‘different kind of cinema’ has<br />

developed here in <strong>Freiburg</strong> over the years, one which has gained widespread<br />

public, cultural and political acceptance. Every year, the community<br />

cinema attracts audiences numbering far in excess of 25,000 to<br />

see some 750 showings of over 300 different fi lm programmes, as well<br />

as other events.<br />
