Teej celebration in Queensland 

Women in different parts of Queensland celebrated Teej festival with great 

enthusiasm at different times throughout the month of August. Teej is a festival 

traditionally celebrated by Hindu women as a symbol of union of Lord Shiva and 

Goddess Parvati. The festival is usually marked by the fasting ritual for marital bliss. 

In recent years, pre-celebration of Teej has become more popular amongst Nepalese 

women of all caste and creeds, regardless of their age, as a festival of music, dance 

and feasts. 

This year Nepalese Association of Queensland (NAQ) organised the Teej 

Festival in Brisbane attracting a crowd of more than 450 women. According to the 

organisers, the attendance was overwhelming and fully booked out. The program 

was supported by NRNA Queensland state committee. The major attraction of the 

NAQ Teej programme was performances by popular singer Sindhu Malla and the 

other local artists. Likewise, Teej program was organised and celebrated with great 

fanfare separately in Gold Coast, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Brisbane amongst 

the singing and dancing with another popular Nepali singer Sunita Dulal.

Nepal in the Park Organised by NAFA 

On 20 August 2017, Nepal Australia Friendship Association (NAFA) organised 

‘Nepal in the Park’, an annual fund raising event at Mt Coo-tha, Brisbane. The fund 

raised through the event proceeds towards NAFA’s earthquake rebuilding projects 

in Nepal. NAFA has been running education, health and other community and 

economic development projects in rural Nepal on completely volunteer basis since 

more than 25 years. ‘Nepal in the Park’ is supported

raised from the event is expected to be approximately $7,000 to $8,000 and would

President Ajay Kshatry has stepped down to bring in fresh innovation & minds to 

the teams paving way for a new leadership to take it further for better NCAA.The 

outgoing president will remain as executive advisory to NCAA and is a part of the 

team. Former Chairman of Chitwan Cricket Association Mr. Niraj Shrestha will 

also be the part of the NCAA advisory board. 

Current Secretary, CEO Rupak Chudal will lead the team NCAA moving 

forward while Mr. Sameer Paudel is designated as new Secretary. Mr. Lila Nath 

Dhakal and Mr. Niroj khati will lead each division while Mr. Sakar Mainali and Mr. 

Narayan Pokhrel will contribute as my cricket officers. 

Mr. Karan Shrestha, Mr. Nirmal Kadel and Mr. Sanat Acharya will provide

The exciting cricketing season of quality cricket will start on early September

This year’s annual general meeting (AGM) of the Nepalese Program Group 

of Radio 4EB FM 98.1 was held on August 20, 2017 at Radio 4EB’s premises at 

Kangaroo Point, Brisbane. The Nepalese program is one of 50 radio programs in 

different ethnic languages aired by Radio 4EB, the only ethnic community radio 

station in Brisbane. The Nepalese radio program is managed by a committee 

selected by the members of Nepalese language group. Convener Keshab Sharma 

welcomed all the members of the group present in the AGM and presented both 

the Convener and Treasurer’s reports. The AGM discussed current broadcasting 

arrangements, evaluated radio group’s achievements during the year 2016/17, 

and suggested various ways to improve community support to the radio program. 

The AGM also elected a Program Group Committee for year 2017/18 with the 

following office bearers.

The Nepalese program which is aired every Wednesday from 6:00 am – 7:00 am 

has been running since last 11 years. The program has been a common forum for 

sharing community members’ views on Nepalese music, culture, language, history 

and literature, sharing community news and promoting Nepalese language and 

culture. The radio program has helped Nepalese community mark their presence 

in Brisbane’s broader multicultural landscape. However, very little community 

participation and support, especially the limited number of listeners and handful 

of volunteers involved in broadcasting on regular basis are the most pressing 

challenges that the radio program is facing over the past several years. Despite 

efforts from radio language group committee members and the volunteers involved 

in the program from time to time, the situation hasn’t improved at all. 

Convener Dr Keshab Sharma who has been making significant contribution to 

the Nepalese Radio as Broadcaster and Panel-Operator for many years expressed 

his frustration due to the difficulties the programming group has been facing to 

manage the minimum 32 membership number’ required for the continuation of the 

current arrangement of the radio program. The program group has now managed 

34 members, and hence continuation of the program under current arrangement is 

ensured for another year. 

The Nepalese radio programming committee has urged Nepalese community 

members to support this programme of great cultural significance by listening 

and taking the radio membership. Anyone who is interested in volunteering by 

becoming a broadcaster or a panel operator should contact the convener of the radio 

group. Radio 4EB provides training and other needed support to the members free 

of cost. The Nepalese radio program team also requests the community members 

to listen to the program regularly and provide feedback and suggestions for its 

improvement.

"The Harry Gurung Cup 2017" in Brisbane. "The competition is a tribute to 

sportsperson and the most generous and supportive member of our Nepalese 

community, Mr. Harry Gurung" says Pukar Gurung from Rhino. He added that both 

active Nepalese cricket clubs in Brisbane have decided to play 5 matches series in 

the name of late Harry Gurung. The series includes two 35 Overs matches and three 

20 overs matches. The series started from 30 July 2017 and will finish by the end 

of this year. The winner team will qualify and represent Queensland Cricket at Inter 

State Sports Meet 2018 in Sydney.

benefits of practicing each limb of yoga. 

1. Yama (Social Discipline/ 

Universal Morality):Yama is social 

discipline. Practice of Yama brings good 

to self, family, society, country and the 

whole world. It includes five disciplines: 

(i) Ahimsa (Non-violence): The 

word ahimsa literally means not to injure 

or show cruelty to any creature or any 

person in any way whatsoever. If a man 

gets the ideal of non - injuring others, 

before him, even animals which are 

by their nature ferocious will become 

peaceful. The tiger and the lamb will play 

together before that Yogi. When you have 

come to that state, then only understand 

that you have become firmly established 

in non - injuring. 

(ii) Satya (Truthfulness): Satya 

means "to speak the truth," yet it is not 

always desirable to speak the truth on 

all occasions, for it could harm someone 

unnecessarily. By the establishment of 

truthfulness the Yogi gets the power 

of attaining for himself and others the 

fruits of work without the works. When 

this power of truth will be established 

with you, then even in dream you will 

never tell an untruth. You will be true 

in thought, word, and deed. Whatever 

you say will be truth. You may say to a 

man, "Be blessed," and that man will be 

blessed. If a man is diseased, and you say 

to him, "Be thou cured," he will be cured 

immediately. 

(iii) Asteya (Non-stealing): Steya 

means "to steal"; asteya is the opposite-to 

take nothing that does not belong to us. 

By the establishment of non - stealing all 

wealth comes to the Yogi. The more you 

fly from nature, the more she follows you; 

and if you do not care for her at all, she 

becomes your slave. 

(iv) Brahmacharya (Continence): 

Brahmacharya refers to self-control. It's the 

ability to hold it all in. By the establishment 

of continence energy is gained. The brain 

of man with continence has tremendous 

energy and gigantic will - power. Without 

continency there can be no spiritual 

strength. Continence gives wonderful 

control over mankind. The spiritual leaders 

of men have been very continent, and this is 

what gave them power. Therefore, the Yogi 

must be continent. 

(v) Aparigraha (Non-hoarding): 

Aparigraha means to hoard only what 

is necessary. The yogi feels that the 

hoarding of things implies a lack of faith 

in God and in himself to provide for his 

future. Aparigraha also implies letting 

go of our attachments to things and an 

understanding that impermanence and 

change are the only constants. When he 

is fixed in non - hoarding, he gets the 

memory of past life. He sees that he has 

been coming and going many times, so he 

becomes determined that this time he will 

be free, that he will no more come and go, 

and be the slave of Nature. 

2. Niyama (Self-discipline): 

Niyama refers to the attitude we adopt 

toward ourselves as we create a code for 

living soulfully. Practicing Niyama makes 

a man healthy and pure in body, mind 

and spirit and prepares him for the further 

practice of Yoga. The five disciplines to 

be practiced under Niyama are: 

(i) Soucha (Cleanliness): Soucha 

means purity and cleanliness (inner and 

outer). When there is real purification 

of the body, external and internal, there 

arises neglect of the body, and the idea 

of keeping it nice vanishes. Face which 

others call most beautiful will appear to 

the Yogi as merely animal, if there is not 

intelligence behind it. What the world 

calls a very common face, he regards as 

heavenly, if the spirit shines behind it. 

This thirst after body is the great bane 

of human life. So, the first sign of the 

establishment of purity is that you do not 

care to think you are a body. It is only 

when purity comes that we get rise over 

the body idea. 

(ii) Santosh (Contentment): Santosh 

means the feeling of being content with 

what we have. To be at peace within 

and content with one's lifestyle finding 

contentment even while experiencing 

life’s difficulties for life becomes a 

process of growth through all kinds of 

circumstances. From contentment comes 

the ultimate happiness. 

(iii) Tapa (Mortification): Tapa refers 

to the activity of keeping the body fit or to 

confront and handle the inner urges without 

outer show. Literally it means to heat the 

body and, by so doing, to cleanse it. When 

the impurity is destroyed by mortification, 

body and the sense organs get different 

psychic abilities. The results of mortification 

are seen immediately sometimes by 

clairvoyance, clairaudience etc. 

(iv) Swadhyaya (Self Study): Swa 


Yoga 

means "self' adhyaya means "inquiry" 

or "examination". Any activity that 

cultivates self-reflective consciousness 

can be considered swadhyaya. By selfstudy 

and constant inquiry comes the 

realisation of the intended deity. 

(v) Iswarapranidhana (Surrender 

to God): Iswarapranidhana means "to 

lay all your actions at the feet of God." It 

is the contemplation on God (Iswara) in 

order to become attuned to god and god's 

will. By surrendering all to God comes 

Samadhi (Super consciousness). 

3. Asana (Posture): Asana means 

staying in a position pleasantly and 

comfortably. Until you can get a firm 

seat you cannot practice the breathing and 

other exercises. Firmness of seat means 

that you do not feel the body at all. In 

the ordinary way, you will find that as 

soon as you sit for a few minutes all sorts 

of disturbances come into the body; but 

when you have got beyond the idea of a 

concrete body, you will lose all sense of 

the body. You will feel neither pleasure 

nor pain. And when you take your body 

up again, it will feel so rested. When you 

have succeeded in conquering the body 

and keeping it firm, your practice will 

remain firm, but while you are disturbed 

by the body, your nerves become 

disturbed, and you cannot concentrate the 

mind. The dualities, good and bad, heat 

and cold, and all the pairs of opposites, 

will not then disturb you. 

4. Pranayama (Breathing 

Exercises): Pranayama is the measuring, 

control, directing and expansion of 

the breath. Pranayama controls the 

energy (prana) within the organism, 

in order to restore and maintain health 

and to promote evolution. We begin 

by controlling the breath, as the easiest 

way of getting control of the Prana. By 

controlling the prana we can control the 

mind, the mind is set free and becomes fit 

for concentration. 

5. Pratyahara (Control of the 

senses/sense organs): Pratyahara means 

drawing back or retreat. The word 

ahara means "nourishment"; pratyahara 

translates as "to withdraw oneself from 

that which nourishes the senses." When 

the Yogi has succeeded in preventing the 

senses from taking the forms of external 

objects, and in making them remain one 

with the mind - stuff, then comes perfect 

control of the senses. When the senses are 

perfectly under control, every muscle and 

nerve will be under control, because the 

senses are the centres of all the sensations, 

and of all actions. When the senses are 

controlled, the Yogi can control all feeling 

and doing; the whole of the body comes 

under his control. 

6. Dharana (Concentration): 

Dharana (concentration) is when the mind 

holds on to some object, either in the 

body, or outside the body, and keeps itself 

in that state. 

7. Dhyana (Meditation): The mind 

tries to think of one object, to hold itself 

to one particular spot, as the top of the 

head, the heart, etc., and if the mind 

succeeds in receiving the sensations only 

through that part of the body, and through 

no other part, that would be Dharana, and 

when the mind succeeds in keeping itself 

in that state for some time, it is called 

Dhyana (meditation). 

8. Samadhi (Super consciousness): 

That comes when in meditation the 

form or the external part is given up. 

Suppose I were meditating on a book, 

and that I have gradually succeeded 

in concentrating the mind on it, and 

perceiving only the internal sensations, 

the meaning, unexpressed in any form -- 

that state of Dhyana is called Samadhi. 

When a man can direct his mind to 

any particular object and fix it there, 

and then keep it there for a long time, 

separating its external shape from the 

internal part, this is Samyama; means 

Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi, one 

following the other, and making one. 

The form of the thing has vanished, 

and only its meaning remains in the 

mind.When one has succeeded in 

making this Samyama, all powers come 

under his control. This is the great 

instrument of the Yogi. The objects of 

knowledge are infinite, and they are 

divided into the gross, grosser, grossest 

and the fine, finer, finest and so on. 

This Samyama should be first applied 

to gross things, and when you begin 

to get knowledge of this gross, slowly, 

by stages, it should be brought to finer 

things. 

8By making Samyama on friendship, 

mercy, etc. the Yogi excels in the 

respective qualities. 

8By making Samyama on the strength of 

the elephant and other creatures, their 

respective strength comes to the Yogi. 

8By making Samyama on the sun, 

comes the knowledge of the world. 

8By making Samyama on the moon, 

comes the knowledge of the cluster 

of stars 

8By making Samyama on the navel 

circle, comes the knowledge of the 

constitution of the body. 

8By making Samyama on the hollow of 

the throat, comes cessation of thirst 

and hunger. 

This is why yoga can deal with all the 

problems that exist in the world (physical, 

mental, social, spiritual). But it needs 

practice, and a lot of people nowadays 

don’t have time anymore. So, they cannot 

focus on what they really searching for, 

called inner peace or bliss. So, they will 

get either mentally sick or physically ill. 

It will bring them in a situation in which 

they have to surrender. They might think 

that dying is easier than living.But with 

yoga life can be beautiful. Yoga will bring 

us back in a simple form and we will 

feel again natural joy for little things. We 

don’t have to pay money for that. The 

only thing we have to invest is some time 

every day and choose yoga as a lifestyle. 

It should be worth for everyone. And if 

more and more people would do it, let’s 

say a little investment of time, it would 

create a huge power and happiness. Yoga 

creates balance in your life. Balance 

between work and rest, outer and inner 

world, personal and social life etc. etc. 

Many years ago, there lived a brave 

and powerful king. All other kings were 

afraid of him. Because of his power and 

prosperity, ego rose in him day by day, 

he drown into the world of pleasures and 

luxuries. As he grew older and older, 

he became weaker and weaker. He was

stressed by the fear of death, with various 

negative thoughts and anxieties. One 

day he came to think – “ it was only 

few times ago that I was young, full of 

strength and courage, how fit was my 

body, I was so beautiful, I never used to 

get tired, how fast time run away, it’s my 

60th birthday today. When I look at the 

mirror clearly I can see wrinkled face 

and all the hairs from the body is also 

turning grey. Teeth also became weak. I 

can’t digest food like before but the desire 

to eat tasty foods is increasing instead of 

decreasing. In such worst condition also 

lust has not been decreased. But I am 

getting weaker and weaker. Maybe this 

is called old age. Now soon I will die? 

What is the meaning of this kind of life? I 

still couldn’t recognize myself, I couldn’t 

understand anything about this life, who 

am I? What is the secret of this life? 

What is the thing I should know? What is 

death? Shall I die without knowing any 

of these things! Is this life only means 

birth, growth and death! Eating, drinking, 

experiencingdifferent things and getting 

to the mouth of death being webbed in 

pleasure and pain?” That day the King 

called saints, philosophers, gurus and 

masters from all over his country to the 

palace and asked such questions, “what 

is the secret of this life? What is the true 

worth living called, what can be done to 

live a worthy life? How can we escape 

from the sorrow, disease and attachment? 

And last question: Is there any way 

to survive from the mouth of death?” 

They told him that the answer to these 

questions can be achieved from the holy 

books. Then they created an investigation 

committee to collect the answers of 

king’s questions. People were sent in all 

directions to collect holy books from all 

over the country. It took 5 years for them

Trembling his hands and body, king said 

furiously, “you stupid peoples! how can I

Summarize it in one word!” It took 2 years 

for then. The chief of the committee went 

in front of the King. He was taking his last 

breath at that time. If he heard it or not, 

and if heard he understood or not, that 

one word was ‘YOGA’. 

Either king heard it or not at least 

we get the chance to hear it. The one 

word summarized extract from all the 

holy scriptures ever written is “YOGA”. 

Learning the secret of the importance of 

yoga from this story, at the right time if 

we become able to start this great sacred 

journey and make our life worthy, our life 

will succeed. Otherwise like the king in 

the old stage it would not only be difficult 

but impossible to understand the secret of 

life. Then as we born crying we will die 

also crying.

Book Review 

Dragon Keeper 

Safal Regmi 

Dragon Keeper is a fascinating 

book. This book is the first in 

its series and is authored by 

Carole Wilkinson. In the book, 

there is a girl named Ping. In the story, the 

girl is slaved by Master Lan, who is the 

Dragon Keeper. One day, the girl goes to 

the dungeon, a place where the dragons 

are kept. The girl interacts with a dragon 

and sooner, the girl and the dragon become 

close friends. The dragon’s name is Danzi 

and a short time after, the girl lets Danzi 

out of the dungeon. They escape from the 

Han Dynasty, a part of ancient China. 

They travel through China to reach 

the ocean, carrying a purple Dragon Stone 

with them and encountering many dangers 

on their journey. Dragon Hunters are 

after Ping and Danzi. Ping goes through 

many places on her adventure. Danzi 

treasures two things during the adventure, 

the Dragon Stone, and Ping. Ping does 

not know what the dragon stone is but 

one thing is for sure, Danzi will keep the 

Dragon Stone safe forever. 

Afterwards, one of Danzi’s wings 

gets damaged so he goes to Wang Cao, 

who is an herbalist in the profession for 

treatment. The herbalist treats Danzi with 

care. Unfortunately, they see Diao (the 

dragon hunter) in Chang'an and are forced 

to leave immediately thinking that Diao 

hadn't spotted them. Ping and Danzi travel 

as fast as they can to the next town, a small 

village to the east of Chang'an. When they 

enter the village, they are warmly invited 

and the villagers treat Danzi and Ping with 

the utmost care. However, Ping a Danzi 

come to realize that a third traveler had 

just arrived; it was Diao the dragon hunter. 

Diao told the villagers that Ping was an 

evil sorceress, and they locked her and 

Danzi in a place where pigs live. 

Ping and Danzi use some of the 

explosive powder Wang Cao had given 

them. They also used Danzi's roars to scare 

away the people guarding them, and they 

run off to the next village, as fast as they 

can, WITHOUT THE DRAGON STONE. 

At the next village, the villagers are having 

difficulty with drought and are planning 

to sacrifice a girl to the 'Water Dragon' to 

bring them rain. They capture Ping and 

tie her hands and feet together, then throw 

her in the water. Danzi goes into the water 

and saves her, telling the villagers that 

he doesn’t want any sacrifices at all. The 

villagers were still in demand for rain, so 

Danzi flies high into the clouds, despite 

his damaged wings, and creates a storm. 

Danzi drops back to earth with so much 

force that he becomes unconscious. Ping 

drags Danzi’s body to a shelter, where 

Ping heals Danzi. They leave for the next 

village when the rain stops. 

Danzi agrees to continue their journey 

without the Dragon Stone. They travel to 

the Yellow River and find a woman, Jiang 

Bing, who is willing to travel with them 

towards the Ocean. After a few weeks, 

they stop at Wucheng; the Necromancers' 

village. Ping and Danzi enters, and Ping 

uses her magic power to find the dragon 

stone, and they escape with difficulty. They 

go to Jiang Bing's boat, asking to board 

again. She agrees, and they leave. Sooner 

they started the journey, unexpectedly, 

Jiang Bing's cat transforms into the evil 

Necromancer. 

Ping and Danzi fight off the 

Necromancer(Cat) and Jiang Bing, then 

Ping tries to navigate the boat through the 

water. After hours and hours of steering, 

they crash into a huge ship. Ping and 

Danzi ran away from the boat, but a group 

of ministers gets off from the huge ship. 

After a while, all the Ministers bow down 

because the Emperor has come! The 

Emperor takes Ping and Danzi with him to 

the Royal Lodge. Ping and Emperor Liu 

Che become good friends over the next 

two days. When Liu Che brings a group 

of scientists for some sort of work, as a 

scientist, Wang Cao arrives and leaves the 

next night with Danzi. Ping feels the loss 

inside and has a hard time believing that 

Danzi is gone. 

Suddenly, Ping hears something in 

her mind, she felt the sound of the Dragon 

Stone. Her qi power(magic Power) leads 

her to the stone. When she thinks she is 

getting nearer to the stone, she opens her 

eyes up ahead, she finds Danzi, Wang 

Cao, and Diao. Ping helps Danzi and 

Wang Cao defeat Diao(Dragon Hunter). 

Unfortunately, during the battle, Wang 

Cao gets shot in the chest. Danzi and 

Ping fly off, leaving the Emperor on the 

mountain. Then, Danzi flies Ping to the 

Ocean. He tells Ping that he is traveling to 

the Isle of Blest. Ping mistakenly drops the 

Dragon Stone but surprisingly, it cracks; 

a baby dragon emerges! From the Dragon 

Stone (now an egg) hatched a purple baby 

dragon. Danzi tells Ping how to care for 

the young dragon, and flies off into the Isle 

of Blest. Ping is left alone with the baby 

dragon. Ping names the baby dragon Long 

Kai Duan. 

I thought this is a great book because 

it is hard to stop reading once we start the 

book. Dragon keeper is only the first in 

its series, so, if you like this book, I will 

recommend you read the other books in its 

series. This book has challenging vocabulary 

and many interesting events. An inspiring 

and creative thought came to my mind after 

reading this book. I like this book very much 

and I give this book 4 out of 5.

Why do people 

commit suicide? 

At midnight, all of sudden, I 

woke up with fear, covered 

in sweat. I saw her, my friend 

now dead, in my “dream”,and 

thanked God that I was still alive. 

She was my childhood friend who I 

used to play with. We grew up together. 

We were close friends. Last year, I heard 

she committed suicide in her own room. 

I was in Bangalore when the incident 

happened. I was unable to visit Nepal 

to attend her last rites. And today, as I 

met her in my dream; I found that she is 

unhappy wherever she is. Her soul is still 

hovering around in the atmosphere. 

In the dream, I felt she regrets her 

decision to take her life, and asked her 

“Why did you take such an extreme 

decision?” She cried. She said that she 

had fallen in love with a guy who is from 

the lower caste. She wanted to marry him 

but her parents were against the marriage. 

She wanted to run away with him but 

he did not agree to it and advised her to 

not go against her parents. He told her 

to wait for a few days to convince her 

parents. But my friend knew her parents 

well. Her parents had already fixed her 

marriage with another guy. So, she hung 

herself in her own room before the day 

of her marriage. She said that even after 

killing herself, her soul was not satisfied. 

She is roaming in this atmosphere only. 

Now, she has no physical body. There is 

no limited area to be within. There are 

no rules to obey but still she is not happy 

with her current state of being. Then, I 

woke up. 

May be, some of you wondering why 

I wrote this article? Why I published it? I 

used to write journals when I was in class 

8, 9, and 10.Then I discontinued it, but

cried. She said that she

honest with their children. Parents must 

be good friends of their children with 

whom the children can share their joys 

and sorrows. If we are able to build such 

a ladder from their childhood, I feel 

confident that the number of suicides 

can be reduced. Sometimes, parents are 

unable to identify what their children are 

going through. Therefore, it is my sincere 

advice that parents be flexible with their 

children. If not, the horrible incident that

These days, many youngsters, 

teenagers as well adults are killing 

themselves because lack of passion and 

motivation. They live with a constant 

fear, in relation to their parents, relatives, 

friends as well as the society. They fear 

losing their reputation in the society. They 

fear to fight against the outdated social 

norms. Lack of faith in themselves can 

also lead to such extreme measures as 

taken by my friend. 

No matter what our profession may 

be,or where we might be in terms of life 

situation, it is important to stay motivated.
