Ellie Bauer
REGIONAL -- The Bauer
family of Byfield finally had some
great news last week. Six-year-old
Ellie, the oldest of three children in
the family, came home for the first
time in three weeks from Boston
Children’s Hospital after she had
the first in a series of double stem
cell transplants.
In April, Ellie was diagnosed
with an advanced pediatric
cancer, stage four neuroblastoma.
Before the transplant, her
treatment included five rounds
of chemotherapy and surgery. In
a few weeks, she is scheduled for
more transplants, plus radiation
and immunotherapy.
Her father, Andy Bauer, the family
life pastor at Hope Community
Church in Newburyport, wrote last
Relax and read...
week on her Facebook page, Ellie’s
Warriors, “I have some great news,
Ellie is coming home today!”
Bauer, who coordinates the
church’s youth programs and
events, also wrote that Ellie
“continues to amaze us. I think
she has become one of the nurse’s
favorites. She’s just a sweet little
girl.”
Her mother, Kate Bauer,
who also works at Hope church
supporting its community groups,
has been running between their
home, where she has two younger
children, and the hospital. Having
the family together again presents
a variety of challenges, but is “so
worth it to have Ellie back home
and to have our whole family
As the 25th consecutive season of summer music comes to a close
at Maudslay Arts Center in the Maudslay State Park in Newburyport,
it is time to recognize and thank the many volunteers, sponsors, and
news media that make this amazing non-profit outdoor venue a
reality each summer. This year truly was a Silver Jubilee, a quarter of
a century.
First we salute the local bank that has supported the center and
the arts for many years and allows us to continue to offer excellent
musical programs for reasonable cost - The Newburyport Five Cents
Savings Bank, which sponsored the Saturday night series. This year
attendance was up once again thanks to the fine entertainment offered
at MAC and the continued publicity by so many media outlets -
all the newspapers, magazines, radio stations, cable TV and online
services that helped get our message out to the community to insure
increasing attendance.
I would like to personally thank Carol Feingold, publicist; Robert
Schledwitz, our valiant gardener; Irene Johnson, our most talented
graphic designer; Steve DeGuglielmo, accountant; Tia Costello,
printing weekly programs, and MAC Board of Directors: Cynthia
Costello, vice president; Nicholas J. Costello, president; Tia Costello,
treasurer. A special thanks to Marie Messner, who recently retired
from this challenging position after 25 years.
A special “shout out” to this year’s volunteers, who worked
tirelessly to make this series happen: Marjorie Anderson, volunteer
coordinator; the Rev. Michael and Edna Shirley; Rena Roseman; Jean
and John Lambert; Sue Tiernan; Nancy Brogden; Mary LaPlante;
Regina Branco; Sharyn Russell; Rosey Werner; Charlie Costello, and
Assisted Living Locators
Amesbury Provides Tips On How
To Choose A Senior Assisted
Living Community
It is National Assisted Living Week® through Saturday, September
16. Established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in
1995, National Assisted Living Week® provides a unique opportunity
for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding
communities to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for
America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. NCAL website states
there are 30,200 assisted living communities with 1 million licensed
beds in the United States today. The number of licensed beds within a
community range from 4 to 499.
Finding the best assisted living community isn’t easy. And it shouldn’t
be. This is a new and important chapter in a senior’s life. It’s a process
that can be made easier with some guidance.
In celebration of National Assisted Living Week, Assisted Living
Locators Amesbury, a FREE SERVICE to seniors and their families
offering expert advice on short-term and long-term care options in the
Essex and Middlesex Counties, is providing tips to help choose the
best assisted living community for a loved one.
According to Jon Younger, Assisted Living Locators Owner, choosing
an assisted living community is an important decision that involves
more than simply choosing a floor plan — it’s about lifestyle. And
in addition to meeting social, cultural, educational and recreational
requirements, you also want to ensure that there is a continuum of care
in place to meet your loved one’s needs if and when they change.
Assisted living facilities offer the safety and security of 24-hour
support and access to care. Day or night, help is only a phone call
away. However, privacy and independence are encouraged. A good
facility will develop a personalized plan that meets your senior’s needs
and accommodates their disabilities, while giving them the freedom to
do what they can for themselves. Most facilities have a group dining
area and common areas for social and recreational activities.
Younger recommends touring assisted living communities in
your area to best evaluate your loved one’s options and get a feel for
their “culture.” Sample the dining services by visiting for lunch. Or,
attend a community event or social — there are numerous low-key
opportunities which provide fun-filled, no-pressure invitations to
mingle with current residents and preview the community.
“Make sure the community feels home-like,” said Younger. “Do you
like the décor? Are there grab bars in the bathroom? Is there a separate
thermostat in your room? Is there plenty of natural lighting? What is
the view like? Is there enough closet and storage space? Are kitchen
cabinets easy to reach?”
Younger stated that amenities offered by assisted living communities
are also important. Does the facility offer activities your senior is
interested in? Is there a craft or art room on site? Are there transportation
schedules for shopping? Does the facility have amenities that are
important to his/her interests, such as a work-out facility, recreation
center, library, or a chapel?
To feel confident that your loved one will be well taken care of,
Younger suggests inquiring about the staffing levels and workload at
an assisted living facility. For example, how many staff members are
actually involved in residents’ care? How many people are working
at any one time? What are their duties during those times—do they
have time to interact with residents? Are there registered nurses on site?
How do staffing patterns differ at night? What happens when a staff
member is sick or otherwise unable to be at work—is there enough
cover?
He explained that it is also imperative to make sure the facility is in
compliance with state and local licensing requirements. In the U.S.,
each state has different standards.
“It’s is a great idea to find someone who provides expert advice on
senior housing and care, who works with families to find assisted living
communities with top amenities, progressive healthcare and optimal
wellness programs,” Younger added. “Our free community-oriented
service allows you take the time to ensure information is fully vetted,
intuitive and the best elder care resources out there.”
together again.”
In Ellie’s honor, the Boston
Children’s Hospital’s Bloodmobile
will be at the Hope Community
Church at 11 Hale Street in
Newburyport from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. on Sept. 23.
“We’re hoping to get the word
out in the area so we can fill ALL
80 slots for this much needed
and wonderful event,” wrote Kim
Perilli, a church member, friend of
the family and one of the growing
ranks of Ellie’s Warriors.
Appointments to give blood
are required. To make your
appointment, log in to www.
halfpints.childrenshospital.org.
Register as a new donor and then
select the location using
sponsor code HOPE.
Monetary donations to help
with Ellie’s medical expenses can be
made at the YouCaring fundraising
site. Almost $21,000 of the goal of
$75,000 has been raised as of the
end of last week.
Boston Children’s Hospital, the
nation’s largest pediatric health care
center with 404 beds, operates a
40-foot-long bloodmobile with five
donor beds. The hospital promises
that a donor can complete the
screening process and give blood
in about 30 minutes.
Ellie completed her first
transplant in three weeks, which
was a week earlier than was
expected, her father wrote on
Facebook. “The medical team is so
thrilled with how Ellie is doing and
how strong she has been. It’s been
a long three weeks, but it’s so good
to see Ellie so energized and back
to herself again. We are so thankful
for the amazing nurses and staff at
Children’s.”
Coming home presents its own
set of challenges, which her father
described as “overwhelming.”
Because Ellie’s immune system is
compromised, it is difficult for her
to go anywhere except their house
and the clinic. She has to stay six
feet away from strangers. When
they go to the clinic, Ellie wears
a mask, and they carry a sign that
says: We must ride the elevator
alone.
At home, Ellie eats a strict diet.
The family removed all houseplants,
washed the curtains and removed
most of the stuff animals.
Because Ellie cannot share a
bath and the Bauer’s home only
had one bath, friends including
Dan McCarthy, Don Roy, Ryan
Entwhistle and John Callahan
installed a half bath near Ellie’s
new room.
“Problem solved!” wrote her
father.
If there is another child in
need of blood, the hospital may
dispatch its bloodmobile to
other communities. For more
information, contact Maureen
Zuzevich, the hospital’s donor
recruitment representative at 617-
Salisbury Elementary PTA Wins National Recognition
In the announcement, the
Salisbury PTA wrote that it
recognizes it is “not so much
that it takes a village to raise a
child, rather than the tremendous
strength, growth, and benefits that
come from engaging the village.”
The National PTA School of
Excellence program recognizes
local PTAs for their support of
partnerships between PTAs and
schools to enrich the educational
experience and overall well-being
for all students, according to the
National PTA.
When local PTAs enroll in
the program, it and the school
administrators make a year-long
commitment to identify and
implement an action plan for
school improvement.
“This program provides
guidance to assist school in
engaging families in the school
decision-making and helps the
school build inclusive policies
related to education, health,
safety or the arts,” the PTA
announcement stated.
at the same apartment complex,
the rescue crew found people
a victim said. “Thank you so very
much for coming out to feed us
and make sure we are okay.”
Although in Maine, Nvest
PTA has identified several ways
parents can get involved. Three
years ago it launched a room parent
program that solicits parents to
volunteer to help teachers in the
classroom. They have donated
winter clothing for students who
lacked proper jackets, gloves and
hats. And for those students who
come to school hungry, there is a
breakfast Grab & Go program,
Roketenetz said.
“Salisbury is made up of hardworking
families, pulling together,
getting it done,” she said.
After conducting a survey of
the school parents and teachers,
the PTA created popular events
like the Fairy Gnome Discovery
Walk at Pettengill Farm.
It also established a speaker
series, sponsored by the Institution
for Savings, that brought experts
in elementary school education
to the school. The experts spoke
to the parents of all Triton
communities about cyberbullying,
child anxiety and ways to improve
a child’s behavior.
Triton Superintendent Brian
for the Salisbury PTA “well
“They have created new events
and traditions that both raise funds
for other programming, as well as
build excitement and connections
within the community. I know
first-hand that the teachers and
staff at Salisbury Elementary
are incredibly thankful and
appreciative of the countless hours
the PTA officers and members give
to better the SES community.”
The PTA board, Roketenetz
said, is made up of “an amazing
group of dedicated people.”
The board prides itself on being
a powerful voice for children,
a relevant resource for parents
and a strong advocate for public
stated.
GLASS CEILINGS
The Actors Studio of Newburyport
presents Glass Ceilings. A collection
of four one-act plays written and
directed by women. The challenges,
accomplishments, disappointments
and successes presented in these short
plays engage, entertain, inspire, amuse
and take the audience on a journey
through life’s moments, big and
small, from the feminine perspective.
The playwrights are Kathleen Miller,
Judith Nies, Adair Rowland, and Edith
Wharton. The directors are Kathleen
Isbell, Hailey Klein, Anna Smulowitz
and Sally Nutt. In the production,
which runs Sept. 15 to 24 at the
Actors Studio of Newburyport, three
contemporary plays are set alongside
Edith Wharton’s “Roman Fever,” based
on her 1934 short story of the same
name, in which we chart the haltering
expansion of the historically proscribed
arenas in which women have found a
foothold and sought to thrive. Friday
BANDING STATION VISIT FOR
BIRDERS
A significant part of what we know
about bird migration comes from the
operations of bird banding stations.
Banders collect date, time, age, weight,
size, molt, gender, and health status
data on birds captured in the wild.
These data are forwarded to the Bird
Banding Laboratory at the Patuxent
Wildlife Research Center and used by
researchers throughout the world. This
program is an opportunity for birders
to visit the Joppa Flats Bird Banding
Station on the Parker River National
Wildlife Refuge, see the banders at
work, and learn about banding. You
present in your mouth convert
the sugar and starch in this
food into acids, which attack
the enamel on your teeth and
can cause tooth decay. The
more often you eat foods that
contain sugars and starches,
“Road trip!” -- to some of us
those words bring back lots of
memories. To others, going on
a road trip is still on the to-do
list. If the idea is appealing,
here are some thoughts to get
you dreaming.
The first consideration is your
vehicle. You can rent a comfy
SUV with luxury seats and
stereo, and then spend nights in
motels. You won’t be putting the
mileage on your own vehicle,
and if the SUV breaks down, a
replacement is only a phone call
away. A rental also gives you
the option of a one-way trip:
Brighter Smiles...
and the longer these remain in
your mouth before brushing,
the greater your risk for decay.
That is why it is important
to brush and floss after every
meal, preferably about a half
hour after the meal, to brush
away any food particles that
may be clinging to or in
between your teeth.
Sugar and starch are not just
in junk food. Sugar also lurks
in things such as milk, yogurt,
salad dressing, ketchup, and
even some vegetables. Fruit
juices, granola bars, and even
“nutritional” bars can also be
loaded with sugar.
Starchy foods such as bread,
cereal, pasta and beans can
also wreak havoc on your
teeth and gums. Like sugar,
starch can also be found in
some unexpected places such
as bananas, canned soup,
prepared spaghetti sauce,
potatoes, and some other
vegetables like corn and peas.
It’s not just what you eat,
it’s when and how frequently
you eat. Limit the amount
of sugary and starchy foods,
especially between meals.
Make sure to read nutritional
labels so you know what you
are consuming. After you do
eat any of these things, wait
about a half hour for your
saliva to naturally neutralize
your mouth and then brush
You can leave the vehicle at an
airport and fly home.
You can pull a camper and
spend time in a campground.
Or you can rent and drive an
RV and have your amenities
right there with you. (Hint, if
you opt for an RV: Get it in
advance and learn to drive it,
hook it up and empty the tanks.
Consider doing a weekend dry
run to a local spot before your
actual trip.)
Do your planning. Research
highlights along the way and
decide if you want to stop at
every single museum or just
cruise right by them. Check
restaurants and see what you
should expect for pricing.
Consider stopping to see
with fluoridated toothpaste.
There are several factors other
than sugar that can contribute
to dental decay. Genetics play
a role, in addition to other
things such as home care,
xerostomia (dry mouth), pH
(acidity level), gum recession
and age. Decay rates can
change throughout life due
to these factors. For those
who are more prone to decay,
a prescription fluoridated
toothpaste should be an
important consideration. This
is something only your dentist
can prescribe, so regular dental
visits are essential.
Snack on healthier choices
such as cheese, vegetables and
fruit. These are better for you
in general but still require you
to cleanse your teeth following
consumption. Try to limit
your intake of soda and fruit
juices and drink plenty of
water. Water not only keeps
you hydrated but helps with
cleansing the mouth.
Dr. St. Clair maintains a
private dental practice in Rowley
and Newburyport dedicated to
health-centered family dentistry.
email them to him at jpstclair@
If you have a big vehicle
and plan to visit large cities,
investigate where you can leave
the vehicle and take local bus
or subway. Learn the different
types of RV parks and what
they provide. See if it’s worth
it to join the Kampgrounds
of America (koa.com) for its
reduced rates. Some resorts
offer RV parking.
Take your AARP card for
discounts. Consult AAA for
trip planning. Review your
medications and be sure to
take enough. (Take extra just
in case.) And most of all: Take
your camera!
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A trusted colleague has news that
could change your perception of a current workplace situation. What
had seemed unfair might prove to be highly favorable after all.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You still need to watch what you
say and how you say it. What you assert as honesty, others might
perceive as Crabbiness. Be patient. This difficult period clears up by
the weekend.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Royalness needs time away from
the limelight to catch up on things, from tidying your desk to making
those calls you’ve put off. You’re back in the center of things by the
weekend.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Honesty is the best policy, of
course. But you’ll do better at achieving your goals if you can be less
aggressive and more circumspect in how you phrase your comments.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your ability to maintain your
balance in confusing situations continues to work for you. Stay on the
steady course, one step at a time. The weekend shows improvement.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your indecisiveness could
simply be your keen Scorpian sense warning you to be wary of making
a commitment. Take this time to do a more thorough investigation.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Good news: New
information comes your way to help you make a more informed
decision on how to deal with the opportunity that has opened up for
you.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good time to
reinforce your self-confidence by acknowledging your good qualities
to yourself. A lull in your social life ends by the weekend. Have fun.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good time to let
those recently pent-up emotions flow more freely. Why not start by
letting the people you care for know how you really feel about them?
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Resist offers, no matter how
well-intentioned, to help with a personal decision. Only you know
what must be done, and you have the emotional strength to follow
through.
You also have a gift for bringing people together in both personal and
ESCAPE YOUR REALITY, COME TO KING RICHARD’S FAIRE - THE NEW
ENGLAND RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL
Gates open September 2, 2017
King Richard’s Faire, New England’s largest and longest-running Renaissance
Faire, announces its 36th season running weekends including Labor Day and
Columbus Day Mondays, September 2 through October 22, 2017. Tucked away
wacky wenches, happy villagers, and the King’s royal court greet you as you enter
the gates.
When as famished as a mud beggar, guests will enjoy the Faire’s delicious spitroasted
turkey legs, buttery ears of corn, boules filled with chowder and stew,
ringlets of fries, and quench their thirst with champagne, wine and brew. Shoppers
