and the Certificate of Achievement for its excellence in financial reporting for the last three years. These awards reflect the commitment of the Village

For its last bond issue, the Village received the highest credit rating, “AAA”, from Moody’s Investors Service. The AAA rating allows Wilmette to take

the history of wilmette

The village is named for Archange Ouilmette, a woman of French

and Potawatomi heritage. With her husband, Antoine, she and

her family moved north from the first settlement in Chicago

to take up residence in a cabin by Lake Michigan on 1280 acres that

were granted to her under the Treaty of Prairie du Chien of 1829.

Long after the Ouilmettes had left for Iowa to join their Potawatomie

kin in 1838, the area remained sparsely settled, save for a few hardy

pioneers near the lake and the first families who had begun to farm

the area west of the ridge along which Ridge Road runs today. From

these early settlements sprang two very different communities: the

Village of Wilmette, incorporated in 1872, and the Village of Gross

Point, incorporated in 1874. The first was founded by mostly Anglo-

Protestant settlers from the East who hoped to develop the village

as a commuter suburb, while the second, to the west of Ridge Road,

was comprised of mostly Roman Catholic, German-speaking farmers,

craftsmen, and shop-owners. Their histories formally merged in the 1920s when Gross Point was annexed by Wilmette, but each of the

two areas has long retained a distinctive character.

As you explore Wilmette, you will find many places whose colorful and intriguing histories are intertwined with the larger history of the

village itself: the 1873 depot, rescued and moved in the early 1970s and now a restaurant; Roemer Park, the local Little League’s 1950s

ballpark; the amazing Baha’i Temple, which took decades to build; Wilmette Harbor and Gillson Park, both by-products of a remarkable

engineering project undertaken over 100 years ago; Plaza del Lago, in what was once the controversial area known as No Man’s Land; the

brick streets of Wilmette, laid down around 1900 and restored during the Great Depression. The details of all of these histories, and of a

great many others, can be found and explored at the Wilmette Historical Museum, which is itself in a storied place, the former Gross Point

Village Hall, 609 Ridge Road.

a closer look at kenilworth

Kenilworth is located approximately 17 miles north of downtown Chicago. It is the newest of the eight Chicago suburban

communities that make up “the North Shore,” and is the only one developed as a planned community. Since its incorporation, the

beauty of Kenilworth has attracted many distinguished residents including architect and town planner George W. Maher, who

was an early purchaser. A contemporary and colleague of Frank Lloyd Wright, Maher, in due course, proceeded to design approximately

37 homes in the village. His town planning expertise and civic dedication further enriched the village with most of the parks and civic

sculpture – including the entry fountain, stone benches, planter urns, bridges and entry pylons – that residents enjoy today.

• In December of 2016, the Village completed

Phase 1 of the Kenilworth 2023 Green Streets

Program. The project incorporated the use

of porous asphalt, porous parkways, and

underground storm water detention to reduce

the amount of water entering the MWRD’s

system. Due to the positive benefits of the

project, the Village received over $1 Million

in funding form the Metropolitan Water

Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.

• In late 2016, the Village began construction

of a booster pump station with the purpose of

purchasing water from the Village of Wilmette.

The Presidents of both Kenilworth and

Wilmette officially switched on the pumps on

January 16, 2017, making the start of a 34 year

water purchasing agreement thorugh 2050.

Kenilworth residents will enjoy more favorable

water rates through purchasing from Wilmette

rather than continuing to operate the Village’s

own water plant.

• In 2016, the Village received a grant from the

Federal Surface Transportation Program to

resurface Kenilworth Avenue from Green Bay

Road to Ridge Road. The grant, which was

administered through IDOT, covered 70% of the

project cost. Additional funding is being secured

to repave the rest of Kenilworth Avenue from

Green Bay Road to Sheridan.

• The first part of phase 1 of the Kenilworth 2023

Infrastructure Improvement Plan was completed

in 2014. With 94% of fire hydrants west of Green

Bay Road below pressure targets, addressing

poor water pressure at fire hydrants was one of

the major program goals. The first major water

project was completed with replacements of

the water mains on portions of Roger, Brier and

Melrose. The new 12” water mains dramatically

improved the water pressure in the area.

• In 2011, Kenilworth responded to resident

requests to improve the recycling program.

At that time, only 4% of trash was diverted to

recycling. A new program started in 2013 with

a goal to increase recycling to 30%. Thanks to

the mindful cooperation from residents, 38% of

trash was recycled in 2014.

• The Kenilworth beach is open for weddings and

other events. This scenic location overlooking

the glistening waters of Lake Michigan is ideal for

destination weddings that are not too far from

home. There are options for renting parts of the

actual beach or terraces overlooking the water.

• Kenilworth consistently ranks in the top tier of

the nation’s wealthiest neighborhoods. Forbes

ranks Kenilworth as the 4th most affluent

neighborhood in the United States for 2013. The

highest ranking came in 2011 when Kenilworth

ranked 2nd most affluent in the nation.

• In August 2009, Village Board adopted a Planned

Unit Development (PUD) process for possible

redevelopment projects as well as more lenient

parking regulations for the Business District.

• In February 2011, Village Board adopted new

sign regulations and updated appearance review

processes.

• In October 2013, the Green Bay Road

Transportation and Streetscape Plan report was

completed which addresses issues related to

traffic management, parking, bicycle mobility,

pedestrian safety, access to transit and Village

character on and around Green Bay Road.

minimizing the threat of Emerald Ash Borer disease. The $10,000

grant funds replacement of infected Ash trees with diverse tree

population.

the history of kenilworth

In the beginning ...

Twenty years

after Winnetka

and Wilmette

were incorporated,

Kenilworth was a tangle

of woods, bordered by

dirt roads, crisscrossed

by wagon tracks, used

as pasture for the cattle

of neighboring residents

and a field laboratory for

botany students from

Northwestern University.

In November 1889, Joseph

Sears purchased more

than 200 acres east of the

railroad between North

Road (now Winnetka

Avenue) and the Mahoney

Farm. After a visit to

Kenilworth in beautiful Warwickshire, England, Sears named the land Kenilworth and formed the

Kenilworth Company to develop it according to the plans of several distinguished architects. Two

years later a dozen homes had been built, six of which are still standing. Kenilworth Avenue had

been laid out straight from the new railroad station to the lake for an unobstructed view. Streets

parallel with it were planned to run on a northeasterly, southwesterly angle so the sun would reach

every room in the house sometime during the day.

The water and gas works, post office, telegraph and telephone services were in operation.

Two and one-half miles of macadam streets, the first on the North Shore, had been paved and

lighted by gas lamps with three miles of concrete sidewalks, gas mains and sewers. During the

Colombian Exposition of 1893, Kenilworth, considered a model community, attracted visitors from

all over the world.

The population reached the 300 required for incorporation on February 4, 1896. By the turn of

the century, the North Shore Railroad was permitted to lay tracks through the Village. There were

beaches at the foot of Kenilworth Avenue and a nine-hole golf course at the southeast edge of

the Village. Streets, originally named for American authors, were renamed by using names from

Sir Walter Scott’s Kenilworth. The first years of this century saw

the organization of the park district, installation of an underground

electrical system and the building of a public school and several

churches. In the 1920s, mail service started as well as tax-supported

fire and police service was developed. A group of 48 citizens formed

the Kenilworth Realty Association and subscribed for nearly

$300,000 in bonds to purchase the North Shore Golf Club and other

property west of the tracks extending the boundaries of Kenilworth

west to Ridge Road. The Mahoney farm was subdivided and Mahoney

Park was given to the Village by the heirs of Daniel Mahoney. The

Village had grown to 0.6 of a square mile. The last land was purchased

by the Village in 1964 from the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad

and landscaped for a park at the railway station.

The Illinois Constitution of 1848 created Township

government to serve the fundamental needs of citizens.

At the grassroots level, it is a government of the people

- you and your next-door neighbors. With a population

of over 56,000, New Trier Township includes the villages

of Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, and Glencoe, plus

portions of Glenview and Northfield.

SOCIAL SERVICES

Through social services New Trier Township government

assists individuals and families in crisis, persons with

disabilities, youth and seniors. Services for residents in

Founded in January

1908, the Wilmette

Park District has

adhered to a program of slow,

steady growth, designed to

acquire and preserve land for

the recreational enjoyment

of village residents. Its

mission is to enrich the

quality of community life

and promote wholesome

activities through creative

programming for people of

all ages and abilities, while

protecting open space and

natural resources for future

generations.

The Park District oversees

314.4 acres of parks and playground properties which include

a nature center and a portion of the Green Bay Bike Trail,

along with a spectacular lakefront, that combine to create the

ambiance that is one of the primary reasons people want to live

in, and continue to move to, our community.

The Park District also owns and operates several facilities which

include the Community Recreation Center, 3000 Glenview

Road; Centennial Recreation Complex, 2300 Old Glenview

Road; The Mallinckrodt Center, 1041A Ridge Road; Wilmette

Golf Club, 3900 Fairway Drive; Wilmette Platform Tennis Club,

3551 Lake Avenue; the Lakeview Center, Wallace Bowl and

Gillson Beach House located on the waterfront.

The Park District is an autonomous government agency,

with a Board of Park Commissioners elected village-wide on

a non-partisan basis. It is empowered to levy taxes, acquire

land, develop parks, build and operate recreation facilities and

establish programs. There are about 70 full-time employees, but

part-time and seasonal employees swell the ranks to over 1,000

The Kenilworth Park District was organized in March of 1906. It is under the

management of a Board of Commissioners which consists of five elected

members from the Kenilworth community. The Park District has the power

to levy taxes, issue bonds, and acquire property and equipment necessary for the

maintenance of Park properties. During its history, the Park District has enjoyed a

close working relationship with the Village of Kenilworth; sharing staff, equipment,

and facilities. The Park District consists of 4 full-time employees largely responsible

for maintaining over 15 acres of Park and Village open space throughout Kenilworth.

Park District Programs

The Kenilworth Park District offers a variety of programs to Kenilworth residents. The

following is a list of programs provided by the Kenilworth Park District:

Village House (600 Ivy Ct.): The Park District Village House located on the north end of

Townley Field, is a good location to host group events, birthday parties, or family reunions. The

Village House is available to the public for rent and residential rates are $50; non-resident

Summer Camp: The Park District offers two summer camp options for six weeks during June and July. Little Springs camp is for ages 3 to those entering

1st Grade in fall. Sports Plus camp is for 2nd grade through 6th grade in fall. Activities include art, music, jugglers, magicians, animal shows and more! The

district also has cooking, lacrosse, golf and athletic camps.

Baseball: The Kenilworth Park District is proud to partner with The Strike zone Baseball and Softball Academy to offer top-of-the-line baseball

programming. The Park District offers 8U/9U and 9U/10U Cal Ripken Summer Baseball League. A full list of baseball program offerings can be found on the

Kenilworth Park District website.

T-Ball: In the spring of each year, the Park District offers a four week T-Ball program for Kindergarten and 1st Grade aged children. The program runs for

four consecutive Saturdays during the latter part of April and into early May. Registration forms are available on the Park District page of the website each

spring.

Basketball: The Kenilworth Park District offers a basketball program for 1st through 3rd graders. The program is a great introduction to the sport of

basketball and provides an opportunity for kids to participate on teams with their friends. 1st through 3rd graders participate in a program at Sears School.

Program registration typically takes place in October and November, and the season runs January and February. Registration forms are available on the

Park District website.

Lacrosse: The Kenilworth Park District is proud to offer a Lacrosse Skills camp as part of their Sports Plus Summer camp. To register for this program,

please visit the Park District website.

Kenilworth Assembly Hall: Located at 410 Kenilworth Ave., this nationally historic banquet hall is available for rentals.

In addition to sports programming, the Kenilworth Park District works closely with various garden clubs active in the community on fundraising,

maintenance and improvement projects related to open space throughout the community. Park District support includes assistance with the annual May

plant sale and working with representatives to plan/implement park improvements.

The Bahá’í House of Worship is a

meeting place for people from all over

the world. The building is a symbol of

the unity of humanity. The Temple

and Gardens are serene places,

open to all, for personal prayer and

meditation.

This splendid structure is one of the most recognizable features of the

Wilmette landscape, viewable by sailboat, runners on a lakefront route

and drivers whizzing around the bend on Sheridan road. Busy travelers

are urged to slow their pace and stop by for a spiritually uplifting visit.

The Bahá’í Welcome Center, just west of the Temple, offers videos and

displays that showcase the history and symbolism of this architectural

wonder. This Bahá’í House of Worship is one of only eight in the world,

and welcomes nearly 300,000 visitors each year.

The Bahá’í House of Worship is open to the public. There is no

membership or congregation at the building. Local members of the

Bahá’í Faith gather in their own neighborhoods for prayer, study and

service projects.

In autumn 2017 Bahá’ís will be celebrating the 200th Anniversary of

the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh, the Founder of the Bahá’í Faith. A “Lights of

Unity Festival” series of special events are planned for September,

October, and November to commemorate this special anniversary.

Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings center on the oneness of humanity and offer

hope and healing for the modern world. Visitors to the Bahá’í House of

Worship and Welcome Center are uplifted and encouraged by these

powerful messages of peace and unity.
