the “Ber” months or the start of the longest Christmas season in the world. You heard that right!
In a country where hospitality is one of our most famous export, you will never run out of reasons to love
the Christmas season. Malls and other establishments are now adorned with Christmas décor while
our favorite yuletide tunes are playing in the background. I’m guilty as like all my kababayan as I have
already erected my 5 year old Christmas Tree in the house! Filipinos cannot help but be merry this early.
Village Pipol is not only merry but (3) Three times merry because of our Cover Girl Favorite Devon Seron
and K-Pop Stars Hyun Woo and Jin Ju-Hyung. So forgive my K-Pop inspired profile picture, I’m just
merry and excited as everyone else in welcoming Devon and the K-Pop Gang! Devon Seron has gone a
long way from a probinsyana teenager who joined ABS CBN’s Pinoy Big Brother to what could possibly
be her breakout movie, You With Me as the first Korean-Filipino film collaboration ever!
10 Reasons to Visit
Siargao Island
Siargao boasts a unique mix of excellent waves ideal for surfing, relaxing vibes,
and beautiful beaches! As a small island, you can easily explore the whole island
in a day! Photos & Text by #Villager Deegee Razon of DeeGeeRazon.com
iargao is a one small island among the 7000+
islands that make up the Philippines but although it
Sis just small, it is best known for its’ amazing waves
that surfers love that’s why it rightly claims the title as the
Philippines’ surfing capital.
During my stay there, I really loved the “home-y” feel of
Siargao. The most common form of transportation here is
the habal-habal (motorcycle) or sometimes tricycles. It’s
ideal to rent a motorbike when you’re exploring Siargao
because it’s cheaper and you’re also free to stop at any
place and go to another place any time you like. Another
thing that I like about this place is there are no taxis,
jeepneys or buses and because of this, the island doesn’t
feel crowded.
If you’re a surfer, it’s ideal to go to Siargao during
September since the waves are really nice during that
time of the year. For non-surfers like me, it’s okay to go
there during summer season but it’s important to take
note that if you ever want to give surfing a try, the waves
aren’t that good during the summer!
1. EVERYTHING IS SCENIC
As a Photographer, I always seek places that are beautiful
in their own unique way. Siargao definitely is beautiful and
charming in its’ own way. I definitely had a blast taking
photos of Siargao’s infinitely many treasures!
2. PALM TREES FOR DAYS!
Everywhere we go in Siargao, there’s always tall palm
trees. Even on highways, you’ll see different views of palm
trees. You probably know how much I love palm trees
hahaha so imagine how happy I was during my time in
Siargao!
3. LOCAL FOOD IS BETTER
In Siargao, I’ve tasted so many good dishes! Words don’t
do justice on how good the food in Siargao is. The seafood
is absolutely the best! It’s so delicious, I’ll promise you will
dream about it after you left the island. Up until now, I’m
still craving for the food that I tried in Siargao!
4. RESORTS
One of the best things Siargao offers is the different
resorts/villas that you can stay in. The resorts are usually
boutique resorts so expect majority of the resorts in
Siargao to be beautiful and artistic.
5. FRIENDLY LOCALS
The people of Siargao really are polite and friendly!
They’re really nice and hospitable to everyone. If you’re
planning to go to Siargao, I recommend getting to know
the locals so they could also share information and their
experiences about the island.
6. LOTS OF #OOTD-FRIENDLY SPOTS!
Everywhere you go, there’s always a perfect Instagramworthy
place on this island. To capture all this scenic views
with your #OOTD, it’s ideal to use your phone/wide lens
camera.
7. UNIQUE SPOTS
There’s always something unique and yet to be explored
in Siargao. One of the best places that you can go is the
Sugba and Sohoton Lagoon and Siargao’s 3 different
Islands namely Dayum, Dako and Naked.
8. GOLDEN HOUR
Siargao is a beautiful place and it’s no exaggeration to call
it a paradise. If you’re still thinking whether it’s worth it to
book that flight to Siargao, I’m gonna give you a friendly
advice and say that yes, it’s worth it! Seeing the sunset in
this island is a very different and breathtaking experience
because of the pink cotton skies and a really amazing view
of the sun setting in the horizon. A definite must see when
you’re in Siargao!
9. SURFING CAPITAL
For those who want to surf or simply enjoy a beautiful
island in this part of the world, I highly recommend adding
this island to your Philippine itinerary. Luckily, there’s a
couple of packages that resorts offer for surfers and nonsurfers
alike.
10. TRAVEL BUDDIES!
I really recommend that you go to Siargao with your
friends or family. If you ever dream of a paradise island
with that peaceful ambience, Siargao is a must visit! You
and your company will definitely enjoy the beauty and
charm of Siargao. (Tagging my awesome travel buddies:
Kerwin King, Dani Barreto, Bela Padilla, Xavi Panlilio &
Josh Vahn Lee!)
Everyone I know who has visited Siargao seems to have
fallen in love with the place and I can definitely see why!
Experiencing Siargao for yourself is really a must. No
matter how many days you’ve planned to stay in Siargao,
it won’t be enough. You’ll definitely fall in love with the
people, the beaches and the food. Put simply, the island
has a great vibe. Let’s hope that it stays this way for many
years to come!
OUR EL NIDO GREEK ADVENTURE:
Cafe Athena
Greek-Mediterranean cuisine is slowly gaining popularity and we can substantiate the reason
why; Most of Greek dishes are grilled rather than fried and in most cases they use olive oil and
yoghurt as dressing which equates to healthy living compared to other fat-laden sauces.
Text & Photos by #Villagers Michelle & Ralph Huertas
Ralph and I recently travelled to El Nido, Palawan and discovered
a diverse selection of worldwide cuisine abound the island. One of
which stands-out in the heart of El Nido town proper where most
tourist merge and celebrate the island life.
Daytime at Cafe Athena
After several nights of binging on local cuisine of mostly seafood,
we decided to try a different fare that can balance out the booze
and pigging out we had the previous days.
Café Athena is located in Serena Street, Buena Suerte, El Nido. A
year after it opened its doors, the establishment is fast becoming
a favorite hangout of tourists and locals alike. Most of its dining
patrons comprise of those who want to partake their delicious yet
healthy Greek cuisine.
Upon being seated we were advised that a bottle of beer comes in
free with our main dishes! Our eyes widened with delight as we
proceeded to order some of their best-sellers.
Café Athena also serves other lovely dishes such as their bestseller
Pasta Puttanesca that is rich in flavorful tomato-caper
sauce with a generous serving of black and green olives.
Chicken Souvlaki
Horiatiki Salata
Lamb Gyro
Puttanesca
Those who want to start off with salad may opt to try their
Horiatiki Salata which is a classic Greek salad that consists of
Tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, onion and olives and topped with
Feta cheese.
with Cafe Athena’s Managing Partner Flaridel Dizon
~ Mich ~
I ordered their Chicken Souvlaki
which resembles a kebab. I
particularly love the tender
and juicy meat that burst with
authentic Mediterranean flavor.
An order comes with either rice or
pita bread, or you may opt for half
and half just like we did.
~ Ralph ~
I went for Lamb Gyro which is
somewhat similar to shawarma.
MIch normally stays away from
lamb dishes but gave in to my
prodding and she noticed that the
lamb meat they used does not bear
too much of the distinctive smell
that she hates, which is a plus
point.
Aside from their signature Greek-Med Menu that draws the crowd,
the café also benefit from a great backdrop of the El Nido scenery
during the day and the lovely sound of the ocean at night.
We tasted each other’s dishes to compare notes as to who ordered
the best tasting dish at Café Athena and had to come to a draw,
hence we asked for the help of Café Athena Managing Partner
Flaridel Dizon but neither could he decide, he explains that he
loves every dish in the menu.
Flaridel is very hands-on with the restaurant operations and treat
each customer like a VIP, this might be the reason why the diners
keep coming back for more. When in El Nido, Palawan, do drop by
Café Athena and you would not regret doing so.
The Dangers of Side Effects
Presented As Main Effects
In the medical world, proper use of words is highly called for because a simple mistake
could complicate things usually unwanted for the patients. Because this field has full of
jargons that mostly are too technical to not easily be sifted and digested by the general
public, putting them in a layman’s term is indeed helpful. A good example of which are
the words “side effect” and “main effect”. These, are more often than not, interchanged
or used instead of the other. Doing so is not just wrong but also dangerous to the
people’s health.
A side effect of any substance pertains to the result beyond the main or primary
action that is intended by the physician giving drug prescription. The doctor, likewise,
foresees this extra consequence.
For instance, the patient might not be conscious of the side effect of unwanted hair
growth elsewhere on the body while using vasodilator drug called Minoxidil to treat
hypertension. The physician, nevertheless, is very well aware about it, as well as other
implications, such as burning or irritation of the eye, itching, and redness or irritation
at the treated area. By and large, doctors suggest that patients should ignore the side
effects unless serious and often alert the sick persons about their likelihood.
An adverse effect, on the other hand, is identified as an outcome wherein the reaction
occurs over and beyond the main and wanted action of a medicine. Both the physician
and the patient don’t know about it as a consequence of taking such treatment. It
can happen simply due to incorrect dosage. Undesirably, this is very harmful as it
can exacerbate the prognosis of the disease. Occasionally, if the adverse effect is too
serious, there might be a need for hospitalization.
Since side effects paired with adverse effects can be fatal and need to be reversed or
given antidote immediately, a very extra cautious effort not to interchange them with
the main effects in the prescription process must be always observed. After all, it’s the
lives of patients at stake here.
It’s ironic to note that people who seek treatments for their ailments or to prolong their
lives become sicker or morbidly end up six feet underground simply because of such
Achieve Korean-fairness
최고의 소녀
The Leading Lady!
Successful people in every industry are often said to be "blessed with
talent" or even just lucky. But the truth is, many worked harder than the
average person can even imagine! Text by Jean Dalida
Hey! It’s not a luck, but a blessing!
For many actresses who start out in supporting roles, a lead is often hard to come by if not
at all. Patience turned out to be a virtue for young actresses, who dutifully played the best
friend or sister for a long time (#BFFSyndrome)until they finally landed leading lady status.
Just like with our very own, Devon Seron!
Devon, is a young Filipina actress and now a television celebrity who was once a
housemate in ABS-CBN’s biggest television reality show where she placed 4th, “Pinoy Big
Brother: Teen Clash” in 2010. Her journey to stardom after stepping out the famous big
blue house was never easy. Although she has the looks, the charm, and the talent, Devon’s
career hasn’t skyrocketed just yet. Little do we know that she’s apparently destined for a
bigger project.
Devon admitted that there were many times that she wanted to quit showbiz. She felt the
urge of doing something else and switch to another field. But she resisted quitting and
no matter how hard the competition in the industry she kept pursuing it not only for her
dreams but because of her family.
Devon Seron as Kim Soriano
And that’s one thing we love about her: She’s humble, well-rounded young fine
lady. From teens to her twenties has nothing changed. She’s still the same
“Bubbly Promdi ng Cebu” we all knew. Fast-forward to today, we have a feeling
that Devon Seron‘s career is about to reach its peak anytime soon, especially
now that she bagged the lead role of the movie “You with Me” alongside two
Korean actors Hyun Woo and Jin Ju-Hyung (Oppa’s). Devon plays Kim Soriano,
a well-off Filipina who immigrates to Korea to escape her parents’ iron fists. She
then works as an English teacher and finds her love interest in Hyun Woo’s
character Jason. On the other hand, Ju-Hyung portrays Jason’s
assistant, Rintaro, Jason’s rival in scoring Kim’s
heart.
“You With Me,” helmed by Rommel Ricafort, will premiere in
Philippine theaters on September 27.
A lot might raise their brows, but hey she deserves it more
than anyone else. She worked hard for it. It’s not a luck, but a
blessing. She had her fair share of challenges and obstacles.
And if her story is any indication, hard work and patience do
prevail in the end. She is now reaping the fruits of all her labor.
Devon is an actress, artist, a dreamer who persevered, created and
now, inspire us all to think outside the box, and believe in ourselves
enough to push beyond our boundaries. Success is not a fruit of luck,
but a blessing from above. Old fashioned hard work. Anyone can do it.
Let Devon be an inspiration to you!
A Complete Guide
to Fall 2017’s Top
Fashion Trends!
Everything you’ll be wearing in six months!
Text by Jean Dalida of SkinniestJean.com
Resort season—the clothing delivery that has
transformed from just what you wear on vacation to
the most wearable offering of all—is currently taking
place and already hinting at a new twist with the
classic prints floral, stripes and plaids. There will be
unleashing of the ancient Goddess in you and more..
Whether you’re a laidback, go-with-the-flow type of
dresser, we’ve compiled the ultimate hit-list of Resort’s
ready clothing of what you’ll see everyone will be
wearing in six month’s time, here!
Goddesses were everywhere during
Resort, especially in Karl Lagerfeld’s
ethereal collection for Chanel. Diaphanous
gowns were paired with modern, vibrantly
colored gladiator sandals for a new kind of
pretty power woman look!
These aren’t your run-of-the-mill checks
and tartans. Plaids are getting a heavy
dose of cool with variations on shapes and
shades that are a far cry from the Scottish
Highlands!
Forget athleisure. This season, designers
gave sporty clothes a glamorous spin. The
look was particularly punchy at Valentino,
where Pierpaolo Piccioli showed The Get
Down-inspired track suits, dresses, and
strappy sandals with athletic ankle socks.
Game on!
Designers like Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas
Ghesquière and Joseph Altuzarra smartly
updated that Resort season favorite,
stripes, using dynamic colors and unusual
placements worthy of a double take!
Resort is all about the idea of travel, and
what better way to pack for a warmweather
holiday than to stuff a suitcase full
of striking white? Designers took this into
consideration and played with the idea of
donning a bleached-out look way, way after
Labor Day!
SandreaLee Salon:
The Newest Go-to of
the Stars!
Words from Lee, Founder & CEO of SandreaLee Salon
Almost two years ago, the journey of SandreaLee began
with a single small salon, in the building that was once the
share house of my aunts when she was at university. At
the time, my partner Sandrea and I had no consideration or
aspiration for anything beyond this one salon. With many
of our clients being our close friends within the LGBT, our
once humble salon quickly became a place full of selfexpression,
laughter and spirit - a place that we all felt safe
to be ourselves. Never forgetting our roots and keeping a
close relationship with our clients, we have since grown
organically, opening branches more or less where we’ve
been asked to. Like any new business, we have had many
challenges in our first 2 years, but the loyalty from our
SandreaLee family has made us strong… and in the times it
hasn’t made us strong, its at least made us laugh.
We have built a good reputation for our services,
particularly our fashion color. Almost all Filipinos have the
same hair color, so this is something we use to differentiate
and express ourselves. Some of our clients keep their
natural color and come to us for cuts and treatments, others
opt for subtle tone changes, while some walk out looking
like beautiful wild flowers.
We now have eight salons and are offering franchises to the
pubic, so we are preparing our business for this transition.
We are excited about this move, though we will need to be
careful to ensure that our values, and everything that has
made us successful so far is not diluted as we expand.
Our strategy for growth is only one part about expanding
operations, and the rest is about internal growth; focusing
on our supply chain, our training academy and introducing
public events - to make sure we keep having fun.
Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What
You Made Me Do’ Leaps to
No. 1 on Hot 100!
Swift scores her fifth Hot 100 No. 1 and breaks the weekly streaming record
for a song by a woman. “Look” also stops the record-tying 16-week reign of
“Despacito.”
Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” blasts from No. 77 (where it
debuted) to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Sept. 16), following its
first full week of data tracking. After its Aug. 25 release, the song soars to the
top with the highest weekly streaming and sales sums for a track in 2017 and
breaks the record for the most weekly streams ever for a song by a woman.
“Look” -- released on Big Machine/Republic Records and the first single
from Swift’s album Reputation (her first since 1989 in 2014), due Nov. 10
-- is her fifth Hot 100 No. 1. It also dethrones Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s
“Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber, which a week ago tied the record for the
most weeks spent at No. 1 (16) in the Hot 100’s 59-year history.
Let’s run down the numerous achievements for “Look” as it crowns the Hot
100, which blends all-genre streaming, airplay and sales data. Highlights of
the rest of the top 10 will post on Billboard.com later today (Sept. 5), and all
charts will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (Sept. 6).
Record-breaking streams: Following its first week of streaming, “Look” blasts
onto the Streaming Songs chart at No. 1 with 84.4 million U.S. streams in the
week ending Aug. 31, according to Nielsen Music. The total is not only the
highest for any song this year, passing the 69.6 million with which “Despacito”
peaked on the June 17-dated chart, but the highest ever in a week for a song
by a female artist, surpassing the debut week of Adele’s “Hello” (61.6 million,
Nov. 14, 2015).
Only one song has posted a greater weekly total than “Look” on Streaming
Songs (which began on March 2, 2013): Baauer’s “Harlem Shake,” which
peaked with 103 million, powered heavily by user-generated clips featuring
the song’s audio (the week that the survey debuted).
Swift adds her third Streaming Songs No. 1, following “Shake It Off” and “Blank
Space.” She ties Miley Cyrus for the most by a woman; among all acts, only
Bieber has earned more No. 1s (four).
RAFAEL NADAL – Tennis World
Never saw this coming!
In 2008, he won two Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal, and finished
the year ranked No. 1 in the world for the first time in his career.
He won the French Open without dropping a set and beat Roger Federerat Wimbledon in a
nearly five-hour marathon considered by many to be the greatest match in tennis history.
Two years later, after retiring in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open with a knee
injury, Nadal won three consecutive Slams and more than $10 million in prize money.
On paper, the first nine months of 2017 might not stack up against either of those seasons.
This was not an Olympic year, and despite winning two Slams and making the final in
three, Nadal, 31, started his year with the bitter taste of an opportunity lost in Melbourne.
But 16 years into his professional career, 2017 might be his most meaningful yet.
On Sunday, Nadal beat 28th-seeded Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to capture his 16th
career Grand Slam title.
“Of course, is a very special year, no?” Nadal said afterward. “[I went] a couple of years
without winning Slams, couple of years with problems. After couple of years without
competing at this very high, high level, very happy to be back -- and emotional year for
me.
“And as I said before, thanks to all the people that help me every day. I have a great team
and a great family that supports me and believe in me, and that’s a great help. Without
them, of course is not impossible, but almost.”
The significance of this season is impossible to sum up with a stat sheet alone. Coming
off a 2016 season in which he suffered his second wrist injury in three seasons and was
forced to withdraw from the French Open after the second round, Nadal’s 10th win at
Roland Garros in June was especially sweet. It was his first Grand Slam title since the
2014 French.
After struggling through knee pain that has followed him throughout his career, and losing
in the fourth round at Wimbledon, Nadal made the quarterfinals at Cincinnati two weeks
before his brilliant US Open run and regained the No. 1 ranking for the first time in more
than three years. And let’s not forget the rekindling of an all-time great rivalry with Roger
Federer, who won the two Slams that Nadal did not.
But what has made this season even more meaningful is that while Nadal promises to
play as long as his body will allow, the most important man in his camp announced earlier
this season that this will be his last.
“Probably without him I would never be playing tennis, and it’s great I had somebody like
him pushing me all the time,” Nadal said. “I think because he was strong and had great
motivation to practice with me since I was a kid, I have been able to get through all these
problems I’ve had in my career in terms of injuries. That makes me stronger, and I just can
say thank you very much to him, because, for sure, he’s one of the most important people
in my life.”
