25 years ago, Guy Chambers and his friend Rob Taylar started Black

Diamond Films Limited upon seeing that there was a gap in the UK

market to sell extreme ski videos. In 1992 the world of extreme sports

was in its infancy and Black Diamond Films pioneered this extreme

sports culture in the UK, quickly establishing itself as the leading

distributor of action sports films in Europe. With over 1,000 titles

and sports as varied as skiing, snowboarding, surfing, mountain biking,

inline skating, dirt bike riding and skateboarding, the Black Diamond

label became known as the premier brand in the action sports industry.

In the same year, Jim Odoire - a mutual friend - joined the team and

began managing the annual Warren Miller Ski Film Tour which, at the

time, was an integral part of the US pre-ski season. This 50-date

nationwide show travelled to cinemas from Inverness to Exeter.

By 1996 Black Diamond had branched out into television, agreeing

an output deal with Sky Sports for 200 hours per year of packaged

content. Black Diamond became a mainstream TV production

company with seven Avid edit suites and a distribution division

selling programmes to countries all over the world.

With an established pedigree in the TV production world, Black

Diamond started to create original content. The company had found

a niche in producing travel related series and was at the forefront

of advertiser funded programmes, which led to working directly

with well-known brands.

With a growing team, they quickly realised that the combination

of good content creation with innovative marketing strategies was a

model not seen before by many brands and, in particular, the travel

industry. From 1997 they developed several travel related TV series

for BBC, Sky One, Travel Channel and Fox TV.

By 1998 Black Diamond had forged a strong working partnership with

Ski Lake Tahoe in California and this led to organically expanding our

client base to further California destinations. In 2006 Black Diamond

bid for, and won, the account to market, PR and represent California

in the UK & Ireland. This was soon followed by 25 other destinations

including Brand USA, the marketing agency for the entire USA.

Black Diamond has grown with the times, reinventing itself and adapting

to an ever-changing media world. Innovation is key to the company’s

DNA. Spotting a gap in the market and a belief that we can do things

better, has led to setting up a talent management division, a research

and clearance agency, a luxury PR division, online training programme

software and the largest adventure film festival in the world.

Black Diamond has always seen opportunity where others would see

delegation; a mentality of ‘can do’, rather than ‘it’s too difficult’.

Guy Chambers currently leads a team of over 45 employees, who

share his entrepreneurial spirit helping to make Black Diamond one

of the most respected and award winning companies in its field.

What follows are just some of the highlights of the story of Black

It was clear from an early age

that Guy was a forward-thinker...

mainly about the slopes!

The prequel to Black Diamond

was Après Pac. In 1989, Guy

designed, created and sold an

all-purpose ski repair kit to

retailers in Europe, Japan and

the USA. It was this product that

morphed into the creation of

Black Diamond.

Way back in 1953, Warren Miller started his filming

exploits and created a dynamic marketing machine

with his ski films. It was Warren’s personal mentoring

of Guy Chambers and Jim Odoire that made the two

wannabees UK clones of Warren. Black Diamond ran

the successful Warren Miller Ski Film Tour for 25

years in the UK and distributed all of Warren Miller’s

films throughout Europe for 20 years.

footage library. In 1998 Black

Diamond purchased the clearance

agency Reid and Casement, which

has been responsible for clearing

footage and the rights to many of

the UK’s most iconic adverts in the

past 20 years.


In 1997, Black Diamond secured

an exclusive output television deal

with Sky Sports providing 200

half-hours of original programming.

By 2002 Black Diamond had

secured distribution in over 120

distributed the weekly round-up show for the British

Ice Hockey League. The whole production had to

be edited and voiced between Sunday evening and

Monday morning for 26 weeks!

Show’ on Channel 5. Another case

For its 11th year, Black

Diamond’s AFF partnered

with Visit California to

create OUTset, an outdoor

film festival that celebrated

California as the birthplace of

counter-culture and extreme

sports through a season of

Californian documentaries.

and Black Diamond is well-versed

in organising successful press trips,

having established comprehensive

programmes reaching high ROI targets.

We have used this experience to work

with many television programmes

across the spectrum - from Billy

Connolly and Rick Stein to ‘TOWIE’

and ‘A League of Their Own’.


Black Diamond created a mini film

series funded by British Airways and

Visit California focusing on ‘reserved’

British people cutting loose on offkilter

Californian adventures. The

‘Britifornians’ campaign saw the

development of three short films

demonstrating the transformative

power of a holiday and inspired

viewers to travel to California.

After nine years hiding in

the basement of 15 Bedford

Street, May 2017 saw Black

Diamond go up in the world

to offices overlooking the

ever-changing Covent

Garden Piazza.


The Black Diamond Christmas

parties have always been

memorable occasions, in more

ways than one! They’ve included

go-karting at Sandown Park

Racecourse, segwaying in

Bruges and cycling in Paris (sans

XMAS

helmets) - and they always take

place in the summer!

IN THE SUN


In 2015, Black Diamond set up

the Tuesday morning running

club. 5km from Trafalgar Square

to Hyde Park via Buckingham

Palace. Teams from Black

Diamond have entered into

marathons, half marathons,

fun runs and colour runs.
