A letter from 

Mayor Charlie Pecaro 

As Mayor of Highwood, I want to welcome you and your family to our 8th Annual Highwood 

Pumpkin Festival! 

Every year this event gets better and better, and this year is no exception. The City of Highwood 

has once again partnered with Make-A-Wish Illinois in the hopes of granting 100 wishes for children 

diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. With the belief that a wish experience can be a 

game changer, all proceeds from Pumpkin Festival will go to Make-A-Wish Illinois. 

In line with our Make-A-Wish partnership, Celebrate Highwood has recently obtained 501(c)(3) 

status with the mission of raising funds for worthy non-profit organizations through its festivals and 

events. Our goal is to build strong community spirit and establish Highwood as the prime entertainment 

destination for dining, festivals and events on the North Shore through inter-organizational 

collaboration, sharing resources and promoting the City as a wonderful place to live, eat and play. 

Pumpkin Festival is an integral part of our community and has helped put the City of Highwood 

on the map. It takes a community to let us host this event and we love paying it forward and are 

happy to make a difference. This event, unlike any other, is dependent on your participation. So 

carve lots of pumpkins, sign up to volunteer, participate in the Superhero 5K Run/Walk, and don’t 

miss our nightly lightings as the Festival goes dark while a Make-A-Wish family helps us light the 

grand jack-o-lantern walls.

of Highwood’s own Superman Sam 

Saturday, October 7 at 9 a.m. 

The Great Highwood Pumpkin 

Festival is excited to host its 2nd 

Annual Superhero 5K Run/Walk 

to raise money for a cause very 

near and dear to the hearts of Highwood’s 

residents, Make-A-Wish Illinois. 

In 2013, Highwood’s hometown 

hero Samuel Asher Sommer, 

known to so many as Superman 

Sam, died on December 13 of 

acute myeloid leukemia at the age 

of 8 years old. To honor Superman 

Sam, a Make-A-Wish recipient, 

event organizers are encouraging 

all participants to come dressed in 

their favorite super hero costume in 

solidarity with the goal of surpassing 

last year’s $60,000 donation 

to Make-A-Wish Illinois and raise 

enough funds to grant 100 wishes 

to children with life-threatening 

medical conditions in Illinois.

I looked back at our Make-A- 

Wish trip to Disney World often,” 

said Sam’s mom Phyllis Sommer.

Brodsky was diagnosed 

with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma 

in 2016 and immediately 

started chemotherapy 

and her six-month 

fight to beat cancer. Focusing 

on Brodsky’s passion 

for fashion, wish granter 

Nikki Lester and her team 

put together a trip to Paris 

Fashion Week September 

2017 which included 

amazing experiences for 

the now healthy 16-yearold 

who’s in remission.

A History of Pumpkin Festival 

and Partnership with Keene, NH 

Now in it’s eighth year, the Great 

Highwood Pumpkin Festival has helped 

put the City of Highwood on the map 

and raised tens of thousands of dollars 

for charity. 

In 1998, Highwood Alderman Eric Falberg 

was living on the east coast when he 

and his wife attended the original Pumpkin 

Festival in Keene, New Hampshire. 

He was so enthralled by the spectacle of 

the walls of lit jack-o-lanterns he had a 

vision, years later as the head of Highwood’s 

special events committee, to 

bring the Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival 

to his hometown. The ‘Prelude to 

Pumpkin Festival’ piggybacked the popular 

weekly Wednesday night Highwood 

Evening Market in October 2009. With 

only three weeks to promote, the community 

pulled together and carved out 

over 1,200 jack-o-lanterns that lit up a 

wall of pumpkins on Highwood Avenue 

in just four hours, and the rest is history! 

The Inaugural Great Highwood Pumpkin 

Festival in 2010 brought tens of thousands 

of people together from all around 

the Midwest and the world, to break the 

Guinness World Records for most jack-olanterns 

lit at one time. Highwood’s official 

count was 26,287l, just shy of the record 

of 30,128 set in 2016 by Boston, MA. 

In 2011, Pecaro and Falberg were on 

a mission and extended a friendly competition 

invite to the mayor of Keene, 

NH, who replied “we are accepting your 

challenge with open arms. The Pumpkin 

Festival is an event built on community 

spirit and pride that brings people together 

to celebrate each other and our city 

through the glow of pumpkins. Going for 

the world record adds to the excitement 

but even before the competition starts, 

we have won just by the challenge. If we 

can spread the message and give other 

communities the opportunity to say ‘you 

matter, your pumpkin counts, come join 

us’ it doesn’t get any better than that.” 

This friendly challenge resulted in 

an HGTV reality show entitled “Pumpkin 

Wars,” in which HGTV’s “Property 

Brothers” star, Jonathan Scott, came to 

Highwood to film, participate and report 

on the great family-friendly festival, 

while his brother, Drew Scott, was 

in Keene, at their Pumpkin Festival. 

The Keene festival won the contest with 

29,381 jacko’-lanterns, and in 2013, 

Keene claimed the Guinness Book of 

World Records for 30,581 lit jack-o’- 

lanterns. However, Highwood continues 

to attempt to break the record friendly 

sister-city rivalry. 

The Original Pumpkin Festival 

The original Pumpkin Festival started 

in Keene, NH in 1991, the brainchild 

of communications and public relations 

professional Nancy Sporborg who states, 

“The magic of the Pumpkin Festival is 

not about setting the World Record, but 

it is that record that enables us to bring 

deeper meaning and enthusiastic participation 

to the event.” 

Sporborg was so inspired by pumpkin 

festivals that she wrote a book featuring 

a photographic journey through 25 years 

of the Pumpkin Festival (PumpkinFestival.org), 

with proceeds going to fund 

pumpkin festivals! 

The original Keene Pumpkin Festival 

has been the inspiration for other pumpkin 

festivals in Highwood, as well as 

Boston, MA and Newtown, CT. After 

a two-year hiatus, the rekindled Keene 

Pumpkin Festival brought to you by the 

children of School Administrative Unit 

29 is uniting students and the community 

to once again create the pumpkin magic 

in downtown Keene.

from communities all 

across the state this year. 

This annual race will 

bring participants together 

in an effort to raise 

awareness and support 

for Make-A-Wish Illinois. 

Kicking off at 9 a.m. 

on Saturday, October 7, 

participants will run and 

walk from Waukegan and 

Walker Avenue, in front 

of The Bent Fork Bakery, 

through downtown Highwood 

and historic Fort 

Sheridan while passing the 

thousands of carved jacko’-lanterns 

which will be 

lit later that evening. 

Participants are encouraged 

to register online for 

the race. It is $35 for the 

run/walk. Plus, all participants 

21 and over will receive 

a free Bloody Mary 

or beer at the end of the 

race!

booth on Pumpkin Festival
