the Inside Patty

Owner of Global Local Gourmet

For a Jamaican kid, there is nothing better than a

beef patty for breakfast, snack, lunch, or dinner. The

quintessential fast food as the hot dog or hamburger

is to Americans, the patty satisfies an Islanders hunger

always. It has become an international block buster

food with the migration of Jamaicans and brand

Jamaica appreciated widely.

Originating from the Jamaica's colonizers, the British

introduced their pasties to the Caribbean region over

their the course of their reign. The Jamaican beef

patty is an amalgamation of various cultures. The

Jamaicans used the English pastry, curry from the East

Indians who migrated to the West Indies as indentured

servants after slavery, and cumin brought over by the

Lebanese and Syrians fleeing religious persecution

and Middle Eastern traders and business men. The

curry or turmeric give patties a distinctive yellow hue.

Cumin offers a sweet-smelling spice with a

distinctively pungent flavor that complements the

sweet flavors of the Caribbean that is also in a patty

like ginger and allspice. English Miners ate pasties

while they worked because of their convenience and

ability to be held in one hand making them the

perfect go-to food. Patties are the pasties derived

treats that have evolved into the present day

phenomenon we have now. They are a worldwide

sensation especially in New York City where the patty

has crossed over into pizza and other American fast

food icon territory.
