The Chairman's Notes
Today we welcome the players, supporters and officials of
Wyrley to The Paycare Ground. Win lose or draw you will
of course be most welcome to join us in the clubhouse for
our post match award winning hospitality.
Late last week we heard that we were successful in a grant
applica9on to Veolia Environmental Trust for £14,000
towards the upgrade of the clubhouse ladies and gents
toilets. The money will be supplemented by the grant from
Awards for All and will ensure that we will be able to fully upgrade the toilets
without dipping into club reserves. We expect the work to be completed before
Christmas. This is fantas9c news for us and together with our plans to redecorate
and refurbish the club room as well as upgrade the tables and chairs, it means that
we are well on course to meet our five year plan commitment of improving our non
playing facili9es.
On the pitch Andy con9nues to work 9relessly to improve the squad. Despite the
fact we are one of only two teams unbeaten in the Division he is s9ll looking to
strengthen in all posi9ons. He has signed Black Country Rangers midfielder James
Filkins and last Saturday we had a glimpse of the speed and quali9es of Tyrone
Clarke O’Connell, whilst former Willenhall and Wednesfield midfielder Michael
Eagles has joined and will bring plenty of experience to the club. Leaving the club
are last season’s leading scorer Sam Melia who has joined Midland League Bloxwich
Town (2016) whilst Daryl Westwood has joined Division Two Sikh Hunters together
with local lads Nick Lewis and Jake Robinson, we wish all of them the best for the
future.
We have been drawn at home to AEI Rugby in the B’ham County FA Vase on
Saturday 21 October. Many of you will know that we are the only team to have won
the compe99on in successive seasons 1990/91 and 1991/92. We will be invi9ng the
players and management from those two teams to the game as guests of the club. I
am already in contact with former players Mark Bates and Colin Johnson but if you
know the whereabouts or contact details of any member of those teams such as
Peter Stone, Vince Bayley, Iggy Patel, Damien Kearns, Simon Archer, Fred
Whitehouse, Phil Wood, Kevin Fletcher and any others then please let me know.
Enjoy today’s game……………………………………………….
View from the Dugout
Good afternoon to you all, welcome to The
Paycare Ground for our fifth home game of the
season.
Last week’s game against Worcester Raiders,
where do I start?. We knew from the off it was
going to be a tough game against a well
organised side who have improved season on
season since joining the West Midlands League,
but you couldn’t write it another draw 3-3.
We expected the first twenty minutes were going
to be key as to how the game would shape up. I
was pleased with the way we started the game
especially during the early exchanges, a few
crunching tackles seemed to make Worcester hesitant putting them on the back foot
enabling us to create some good chances. We managed to convert one early on
which was a real training ground move and finish, something we practice quite
regularly.
Worcester are a good side and we knew they would have good spells in the game
they came back into the game late on in the first half equalising and finished the half
the strongest. During the half-time break, we made it clear what was wanted and
what we had to do. To be fair to the lads they came out the blocks second half
scoring another two quality goals this should have been enough to see Worcester
off.
But yet again, for the third game running we lost our concentration costing us three
points. The lads were absolutely gutted, we know we let Worcester off the hook,
although I was pleased with our overall performance as we looked a real threat all
afternoon and the determination and effort from all was second to none.
I was asked this week “Are you frustrated with the results so far”. The answer is
simple “YES” we should have won the last three games but our concentration levels
late on and individual mistakes have cost us big time. But in saying that we are
human, no one means to make mistakes or switch off. We know as a group we
need to improve, we have a lot of quality in the group there is no need to panic.
The lads have been working hard as usual this week and our commitment and work
ethic along with the attitude of the group has been brilliant and it’s there to see week
in week out a real hard working honest bunch of lads.
In my opinion we have played three out the top four sides in the league and have
matched them in all departments, we know what we have to do, the squad is
collectively focused and ready for the challenges ahead we will be fine.
Again, I hope the Darlo army enjoy the game this afternoon and has always we
need you in good voice cheering the lads on
Match Report
Saturday 9th September Kick Off 3 pm
Darlaston Town (1874) 3 Worcester Raiders 3
After a sixteen-day absence Darlaston returned to West Midlands (Regional)
League Division One action in a thrilling 3-3 draw against an impressive
Worcester Raiders side. In form Raiders arrived at The Paycare Ground full of
confidence with nine points from four games and on the back of a 6-2 victory
whilst Darlaston were unbeaten in four games following two successive draws.
Both sides made a good start, with
both defences respectful of the
attacking prowess of their opponents
who had scored thirty goals between
them in their opening four league
games.
Darlaston saw attempts by debutant
Tyrone Clarke O'Connell and Scott
Broadway off target before taking the
lead with a stunning goal on 13
minutes. A superb right wing run by
Sam Giles saw him outpace his
marker before sending in a pin point
cross which was met by Broadway
whose stunning ten-yard volley gave
visiting keeper Dan Norcott no
chance.
The Hayden Hughes, Broadway strike partnership threatened a minute later but
Broadway's twelve-yard shot was blocked by Matt Tyler. Despite the setback
Worcester started to impose themselves on the game and Richard Smith and
Martin Fowler threatened without troubling keeper Aaron Morris. Fortunately for
the home side Fowler shot wide from distance on three occasions, whilst Clarke-
O'Connell and Follows both had
difficult opportunities to increase
the lead, keeper Norcott saving
easily on both occasions.
Smith, Tyler and Fowler were
impressive for the visitors whilst
Dave Richards, returning from
injury and Luke Charlton created
opportunities for the home side
but the Raiders defence stood
firm.
8

Worcester Raiders grabbed a deserved equaliser on the stroke of half time.
Joe Haines opened up the home defence, his right-wing cross evading the
home defenders to find Richard Smith unmarked at the back post, who
easily slotted home from six yards.
Darlaston regained the lead on 56 minutes. Clarke-O'Connell went on a
twenty-yard run beating two defenders, cutting in from the left-hand side
before curling a superb 22-yard effort beyond the outstretched Norcott and
nestling into the bottom corner. Clarke-O'Connell shot wide from 20 yards
on 65 minutes before the Raiders Haines missed two half chances, the first
effort blocked by home skipper Ryan McAllister, the second going well wide.
Ant Follows was unlucky not to extend the lead on 70 minutes, the
midfielder bursting through to unleash a ferocious 18-yard strike over the
bar. Four minutes later the home side were on target again, Follows sending
Sam Giles clear, as
Norcott advanced from
his line to narrow the
angle, Giles cleverly
chipped the keeper from
16 yards to send the
home support ecstatic.
The two-goal advantage
was short lived and
within five minutes
Raiders netted a second
goal. The home defence
failed to clear a Fowler
right wing cross and
Richard Smith pounced
again to loop an eight-yard header beyond Morris to set up a rousing final
10 minutes.
On 83 minutes, the visitors drew level Tyler easily converting from close
range.
The final seven minutes saw both teams have good chances to take all
three points. Firstly, Smith was denied his hat trick by the outstretched leg of
Morris whilst at the other end in the final minute the outstretched leg of
Hughes failed to connect cleanly from six yards, the ball falling tamely into
the arms of Norcott.
For the third successive game Darlaston let slip a two-goal lead in the final
10 minutes but the crowd of just over one hundred for the fifth home game
running were again sent home happy with the quality of football and effort
on show from both sides. Based on this performance both teams will be
challenging near the top of the table come the end of the season.
Finding the Secret to
Darlaston Town (1874)
Since I started working with the club in June, it has
taken time for me to understand the true Darlaston
Town (1874), and why it means so much to so many
people. The first question I asked myself was “how
could a club like Darlaston run and survive without
employing people, such as bar staff, caterers, cleaners
and maybe even a groundsman”.
Like many people I naturally assumed that was the
case looking from the outside in, there is always an
amount of jealously when other clubs look at what
others have, and how successful they are, there are
always lots of assumptions and hearsay, I have to own
up, I was one of those, the way the club worked it just
didn’t add up.
When I first met Neil at a pub in Cannock to see if I was suitable for the roles I now fill, he
expressed so many times no one earns a penny, everyone that works for and at the club
donates their time on a voluntary basis for no gain whatsoever.
After our initial meeting I was even more confused, I knew my roles would be voluntary,
but I still could still not understand why so many give so much time for very little, a unique
thing in this world we currently live in. So, in essence I suppose I couldn’t still work out
how the club worked, even though the Chairman had told me, it just sounded too good to
be true.
Over the summer months I kept my head down, working away in the background trying to
keep the promises I had made to Neil. I kept asking Andy and Tomo what makes the club
work, why do some many people invest so much for no return. Could they help me find the
secret of Darlaston Town (1874)?
I knew that during the early pre-season friendlies I would the meet characters I have been
told so much about over the years by Shaun Melia, and be able to put faces to the names.
I was starting to hear, Lynne, Gaz, (who I met both very briefly one evening), Anton,
Nicola, Jayne whose photos I had admired for years, but could never understand why they
were not on the club website.
Then there was this enigma a legend of Darlaston’s history, The Boss, the man everyone
has so much respect for and looks up to, but also seemed to fear him at the same time Gil
was his name. I remember Andy Parkes saying to me “You must get on and keep on the
right side of Gil. If you do he will see you right”. “But if you don’t, expect the dreaded
phone call, that starts with “Its Gil here”, when you hear those words you know you’re in
trouble”.
So, when meeting these people for the first time, would I find the secret to Darlaston Town
(1874)?
I suppose the secret truly started to reveal itself at the first home friendly of the season
against Coton Green. I was amazed at the level of kindness, friendliness of everyone. Its
ok seeing people at away games screaming and shouting in some circumstances, but until
14

you see them in their true roles, behind the bar, in the kitchen, on the gate, cutting
the grass and strimming the ground surrounds, or just generally helping everyone.
Together with what goes on before, during and after match days it's only then you
see the true essence, heartbeat and spirt of any club.
In talking to people that day, I started to get an inkling of what the secret of Darlaston
was, in speaking to Jayne Cartwright, Gil, Neil and even Anton, I was being let into
the secret and seeing it with my own eyes.
I missed the second home friendly against Smithswood Firs because of being in
hospital. I returned for the big one, the opening day league game against Old
Wulfrunians. Thrown into the Match Day Secretary Role and as well as looking after
the programme, website and the Match Stats for Andy & Tomo a busy week, did I
enjoy it, OH YES, EVERY SECOND, to win made it a great day.
The second week rolled by, more website articles, news was coming thick and fast,
the stats from the Old Wulfrunians game I produced, I wasn’t happy with, they
needed improving. A second programme needed doing, so really not much time to
think about things during that week.
But by the time I went home the following week after the St. Martins game, I had well
and truly discovered the secret to Darlaston Town (1874)
The secret is so simple the volunteers are the sole, lifeblood, heartbeat of the club,
it’s the love of their Club, Community, Town the ability to make a difference to see
smiles on people’s faces, to see and hear laughter, knowing the name of Darlaston
Town can continue al be it in a different form. That’s why so few give so much, some
a few hours but most hundreds over a year and then a few thousands of hours,
because of their love of their club, its name its history, something they are so proud
of.
It’s not only the supporters and spectators all the work is for, it’s also to support their
fellow volunteers, someone said to me “I have two families, my own and my
Darlaston one”. Says it all really. The eagerness to help each other, nothing is too
much trouble for anyone who walks through those gates, players, management of
both sides officials, supporters and spectators all receive the special Darlo
experience, maybe that’s why they have won the Bob Juggins Trophy two years on
the trot. Every volunteer will go that extra mile to help anyone, it’s so infectious it
rubs off on everyone and makes them give that little bit extra, why because they
CARE, that’s why Darlaston is special.
I must say its sucked me right in too, a powerful fast-growing breathing animal, that
will never stop, because of the people not only at the top of the club, but everyone
who gives helps and supports they provide the fuel to keep the animal growing.
Because I now know the secret I can honestly say It’s a true honour to work for this
wonderful club of ours, but an even greater honour because I have been accepted
into the fold and been given the secret, I assume I can now stand alongside those
that give so much time and effort to the cause, if not I am sure I will get the dreaded
phone call that starts “It’s Gil here”
In life so few people manage to improve or touch the hearts of others, Darlaston
Town (1874) manages to do that every week, and I am proud to be part of that.
What Darlaston Town (1874) FC
means to
Gil Preece
My love affair with Darlaston Town FC started as
a nine-year-old way back in 1951. I was living in
Kings Hill Wednesbury at the time and I started
going to The City Ground with a family friend. He
used to serve teas from a table from the terracing
down the Slater Street side of the ground. I used
to help him in all weather's, there was no cover
he just stood at a table serving teas at a table
whether the sun was shining or it was freezing
cold or raining. I love football and I loved going
and helping him out. It is ironic that 66 years later
I am still serving teas at Darlaston FC but at least now I am in the
clubhouse warm and dry.
When my family moved to Bentley I didn't see him as much and started
to play more football so didn't go to the games as often. I remember
though at that time having to pay a tanner extra to sit in the stand.
After I stopped playing I took up refereeing. I refereed in the West
Midlands League for many years and refereed and was linesman at
Darlaston many times, I was always unbiased though (lol). When I
finished refereeing in 1984 I went to help out at the club as I wanted to
put something back into the game and the town I loved. With the
exception of a very brief spell away I have been here ever since. For
nearly 33 years now it has been part of my life and always will be as I
get no other feeling at any other club like I do for this one.
In those years, I have done every job going. I have at times been
Chairman, secretary, groundsman, kit man and even manager for a short
time. There have been great times and very dour times with chairmen
coming and going and the club on the verge of collapse several times. At
one-time Dave Steventon (he's still on the committee today), Gordon
Campbell and myself took over the running of the club to save it going
out of existence. Between us we did everything, including mowing the
pitch with a sixteen-inch lawn mower, up and down the City Ground
slope for hours and hours. They were difficult times but we saved the
club and that was all that mattered.
18

I have had some
wonderful times and
met some great
people. We are the
only team to have
won the Birmingham
FA Vase back to
back, I am very
proud of that, they
were great times.
Former Walsall player
Jimmy McMorran was
the best manager I
have seen at the club
and Neil Knight was
the best player.
"Knighty" was a nononsense
centre
forward who would frighten defenders and goalkeepers to death, he
would win games on his own. A fabulous player and goal scorer.
Another great bloke at the club was Dave Powers a diehard Wolves fan
known to everyone as "Fingles" he was Darlo and Wolves through and
through. RIP "Fingles".
I was proud of the City Ground and proud to be part of it. My feelings for
the old ground are as strong today as they were nearly 33 years ago
when I first got involved. But time goes on and it was a very sad day that
the club folded in 2013 and the ground went to rack and ruin. Still, we
are at a new ground now and the club is still going. It is a great venue,
with wonderful people, a super chairman and I'm very proud to be part
of Darlaston Town (1874) Football club.
In finishing, I do go back sometimes to look at the old ground and say to
myself " I was part of the old Darlo and it will always be in my heart".
A Look Around the League
With Tipton Town in FA Vase action, Division One leaders Team
Dudley missed an opportunity to move clear at the top of table
losing for the first time this season 3-2 at Old Wulfs. A Michael
Hancox header opened the scoring for the home side, quickly
followed by a Chris Farnell goal after a goalkeeping error. Former
Darlaston midfielder Chris Knight pulled a goal back for the
students on 35 minutes and Wulfs were reduced to 10 men just
before the break. On 75 minutes Noah Diallo made it 3-1 with a 40
yard strike and Knight set up a rousing final few minutes by
making it 3-2 in the 88 th minute.
Allscott leap frogged Bustleholme into third spot following a 3-2
away win at the Tipton Sports Academy. John Scragg put the
visitors ahead in the first minute, Michael Miller equalised, before
two further goals from Scragg put the visitors in control. A Chris
Brown penalty reduced the arrears but Allscott held on for their
fourth win in six games.
Newport Town continued their good start to the season with a 2-0
home win against today’s visitors Wyrley, whilst in the only other
game in the Division Kington Town fell to their fifth defeat in six
games 2-1 at the hands of Telford Juniors who moved up to eighth
spot.
Unfortunately all of the Division One teams in the FA Vase fell to
defeat. Pride of place goes to Tipton Town who pushed Midland
Premier League Coventry United close before finally falling to a 3-1
away defeat. United are two levels above Tipton and have dropped
just two points in their opening six league games so it was always
going to be tough but Tipton stunned their hosts with a fifth
minute goal courtesy of Ebenezer Marango. The visitors held on
until three second half goals sealed their feat Chris Cox and Josh
O’Grady (2) on the scoresheet. Willenhall town continue to
struggle, falling to their fifth defeat 3-0 away at Wem Town.
Also in the FA Vase St Martins lost 3-1 at East Midlands Counties
Football League side Ashby Ivanhoe FC. A Tom Ash penalty after 5
minutes put the visitors ahead before Josh Johnson equalised. Two
early second half goals from Jordan McCourt (penalty) and Elliott
21

Bott saw the home side through. Elsewhere in the Vase Midland
Premier League Uttoxeter Town defeated Gornal Athletic 4-1 whilst
Bromyard were trounced 7-1 by WMRL Premier side Cradley Town.
With most Premier Division teams in FA Vase action there were
only two games in the Premier. Black Country Rangers moved into
third spot with a 3-1 home win against Dudley Sports, Shaquille
McDonald opened the scoring before a 65 th minute equaliser but
late goals from Lee Smith and Tobias Archer secured the three
points for Rangers. In the only other League game Wednesfield
moved up to sixth spot with goals from Kieran Cooke and Josh
Jones.
In Division Two Warstone Wanderers and Sikh Hunters are both
setting the Division alight with 6 consecutive wins from their
opening 6 games so it will be a thriller this Saturday and
someone’s “0” has got to go, when the two meet at Aldersley
Leisure Village. Wanderers lead the Division courtesy of goal
difference which was supplemented with an 8-0 win at AFC
Bridgnorth Development. With former Darlaston players Ben
Lawley, Tyrone Atkinson and Daryl Westwood in their ranks
Hunters have also made a blistering start Reece Bennett (2) Justin
Nisbett and Hinesh Patel amongst the goals in a 4-0 home win
against Shropshire based Rock Rovers.
Most of the league newcomers continue to struggle in the higher
standard of football. The bottom four positions are occupied by
new boys AFC Bridgnorth Development, Oldbury United, Ludlow
Town and Church Stretton. A late Shane Trussell equaliser for AFC
Bilbrook denied Ludlow their first win of the season. Gornal Colts
are also unbeaten after 5 games after trouncing Oldbury United 7-
3 whilst Wonder Vaults with former Darlaston Players Dave Lewis
and Lewis Wemm amongst their ranks, were comprehensive 7-1
winners against Church Stretton.
Elsewhere Wolverhampton United maintained their unbeaten
record with a hard fought 1-0 win away at Market Drayton
Reserves, AFC Wednesbury and AFC Broseley ended goalless and
goals from Jordan Worton Guy and Ash Walker secured FC
Darlaston a home point against Bewdley Town Reserves.
