SOLA POWER Back in the 16 th Century, before Social Media, you didn’t raise awareness of issues by a tweet of 140 characters, you nailed a public notice on a door! That’s what Martin Luther, a German Lawyer turned Monk, did on October 31, 1517. As a result Europe was changed for ever. The 95 theses which Luther hammered to the door of his local Church in Wittenberg, drew attention to what he believed were the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church at the time. It was a theological and political tract that aimed at reforming the Church. And it did. And churches like Lansdowne are the descendants of such a movement. And if we therefore want to understand who we are, we need to know from where we have come. That’s why, Reformation 500, which is being celebrated this month all over the world, matters. The past matters because it shapes the present and future. That’s why, whatever Henry T Ford is alleged to have said, “history is not bunk”! We’ll have other opportunities as a Church to reflect on why the Reformation still matters. Let’s stick with the Five Solas this time. The Solas of the Reformation are the essence of what came to be known as the Protestant identity. If you are a God glorifying, bible believing, Jesus loving, grace appreciating, Spirit enjoying, gospel centred Christian and Church then this is what you stand for. Not everything you stand for but some of the key values… Sola Scriptura (“Scripture alone”): The Bible alone is our highest authority. Sola Fide (“faith alone”): We are saved through faith alone in Jesus Christ. Sola Gratia (“grace alone”): We are saved by the grace of God alone. Solus Christus (“Christ alone”): Jesus Christ alone is our Lord, Saviour, and King. Soli Deo Gloria (“to the glory of God alone”): We live for the glory of God alone. So in a month when as a Church we express our commitment and partnership with Faithworks when we devote our Harvest thanksgiving practically to the work of In Touch when we respond to the biggest annual migration, both to and within the UK (Students) we do so because our Mission is the glory of God through the gospel of grace. Everything we are and do as a Church is inspired by that. It shapes our priorities, budget, vision and strategy. May God bless us as we share in this Mission together. Peter Baker | Senior Minister
