Day 1
Arrive in Queenstown
Lake Wakatipu Oaks Club Resort is situated on the shores of the
lake with astounding views of both the lake and The Remarkables
mountain range. Lake Wanaka occupies a single, glacier-carved
trench and is bordered on all sides by tall m ountains.Because of its
unusual shape, Lake Wakatipu has a ‘tide’ or “standing wave”, which
causes the water to rise and fall about 10 centimeters every 25
minutes or so. Maori legend links this phenomenon to the
heartbeat of a huge monster named Matau, who is said to be
slumbering at the bottom of the lake.
The units at Oaks Club Resort are self-contained facilities for
students to make their own breakfast in the mornings.
Kia ora – Welcome to New Zealand. Students
will be met at Queenstown Airport by their guide
and transferred to their accommodation.
After settling in students are off to spend time at the local Kiwi
House with a private viewing of the shy native bird of New Zealand.
Here they will learn about the community support and conservation
involved in keeping the Kiwi safe from being extinct. Time will
also be spent coming face-to-face with other residents of the Kiwi
House such as the Tuatara (a native lizard type reptile) and other
native birds. The evening will be spent at the top of the Skyline
Gondola, taking in the sights of Queenstown over sunset and
enjoying a buffet dinner.
Day 2
Ziptrek Eco Tour
Students will get to experience an ancient native beech forest
overlooking Queenstown with a spectacular and exhilarating
zip lining adventure. They then take the Skyline Gondola back
up Bob’s Peak to the Ziptrek ziplining course.
The Skyline Gondola is the steepest in the Southern Hemisphere
and takes them 450 meters above Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu.
When they get to the top of the Gondola they are rewarded
with some of Queenstown’s most spectacular views. From Bob’s
Peak they can see Coronet Peak to the north and the iconic
Remarkables mountain range to the east, both of which are
ski resorts in the winter. Across the deep blue waters of Lake
Wakatipu to the southwest you see Cecil and Walter Peaks. It’s
truly awe-inspiring!
Queenstown
Over 3 hours students explore the Kea Tour trail including a
kilometer ziptrek fly down the hill to get the adrenalin going.
Return back to central Queenstown for lunch before a hike
up Queenstown Hill in the afternoon for breath taking views
of the town and nearby Coronet Peak. Dinner is in a local
restaurant in town.
Day 3
Ski Day
Queenstown is a popular destination in the winter for skiers
and snowboarders. Today they will spend time on one of the
well-known ski fields near Queenstown - Coronet Peak. With
awe inspiring views of Queenstown and the surrounding area
of Coronet Peak, this is a great mountain for students to learn
to ski or snowboard on. Included is a 1 hour, 50 minute group
lesson in the morning, gear and ski jacket/pants hire and lift
pass. The rest of the day is free to explore the sunny slopes of
Coronet Peak.
World-class facilities, superb conditions and a spectacular
rollercoaster terrain make Coronet Peak New Zealand’s most
exciting destination for snow lovers of any ability.
Queenstown
Just a 25 minute drive, Coronet Peak is the closest mountain
to Queenstown. Stunning high points and rolling trails offer
seasoned skiers and riders something to really get their teeth
into. For those new to the snow, dedicated learner and novice
areas make finding students’ snow feet easy.
After the exciting day, it’s time to warm up with a hearty meal
at a local pizza restaurant.
Day 4
Ski Day
A short drive takes everyone to Wanaka, another lakeside ski resort
town. Wanaka has pure mountain air, crisp sunny days and breathtaking
vistas. New Zealand’s largest skiable terrain offers students
the freedom to explore wide open spaces.
Wanaka gives students the opportunity to do what they love;
the scenery; the space among the like-minded; the welcome
from people who understand; the energy and the daring; the
crystal water…
…It’s about the time to breathe, take it all in, feel carefree, full
of life, and young people will realise it will stay with them long
after they have left.
Queenstown to Wanaka
The day is spent at Cardrona with another lesson in the morning
to build on the skills learnt the day before. Cardrona has wide
open beginner trails for all ages and abilities, and has an
excellent training ground for new skiers and snowboarders,
and world class trails and pipes for the more advanced.
A cold day deserves a warm hearty dinner, which will be enjoyed
at a local restaurant to warm up from the inside out!
Day 5
Native Shrub Planting
Today students give back to nature. Wanaka is a Maori word
which translates to mean the “place of learning”. Students
learn how to give back to the environment by helping a local
native plant nursery to grow native plants and then planting
their very own plant in a special nature reserve on the edge of
Lake Wanaka.
After this experience young adventurers will have a thrilling
4WD safari to learn what life is like on a real New Zealand
farm. With grazing sheep, cattle and red deer nearby, they’ll
get to enjoy an alpine picnic high in the mountains overlooking
glistening Lake Wanaka, snow-capped peaks and glaciers.
and 4WD Farm
Safari Wanaka
Students learn about the importance of looking after the
environment, having a deeper connection to the plight of our
planet, and building their confidence and self-esteem as they
realize that they have made a difference in the world. This is
a lifelong lesson, which they will carry through their daily lives.
Return back to Wanaka with dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 6
From Wanaka to Queenstown
Students will spend two hours on Lake Wakatipu where they
will learn to fish and hopefully have the opportunity to take
their own fish they’ve caught off their hook. As the charter
boat can only take a maximum of 8 the group will be split in
two trips. Combined with a thrilling ride on the Shotover Jet
and time spent at the historic gold mining town of Arrowtown
while waiting for the other group to f inish their f ishing trip,
this is a day full of adventure and learning new skills.
Any f ish caught will be taken back to the Oaks Club Resort by
the guide to cook up for a light meal later in the afternoon.
Fishing is a popular sport in New Zealand with
Lake Wakatipu rich with salmon, Rainbow Trout
and Brown Trout.
Queenstown is well known for the famous Fergburger, voted
as one of the best burgers in the world! Here your youngsters
will get to experience the culinary delight of this amazing burger,
with soft drinks or juices on the lakefront if the weather is
suitable, or taking in the views from the warmth of the Oak
Club Resort’s apartments.
Day 7
Maori Culture Day
Pinewood is a convenient 2-minute ride away from the
Queenstown Bike park and a 7-minute walk from theenergetic
centre of Queenstown! This is where the onlyhangi pit in
Queenstown is located.
Hangi is the traditional Maori meal of meat and vegetables
cooked amongst hot stones in the ground. Students will spend
time at Pinewood Lodge helping with the start of the hangi
cooking process.
The hangi will take a few hours to cook. While students
wait for their delicious meal, they travel to nearby
Glenorchy for
an afternoon of orienteering. Students will learn to work
together to complete navigational challenges in the stunning
surroundings.
Today your young students will experience Maori
culture. They will spend time at the nearby
Pinewood Lodge which is nestled in picturesque
alpine scenery.
Return back to Queenstown and experience a traditional Maori
greeting at Pinewood Lodge with a ‘Powhiri’ (Maori welcome)
and cultural performance before enjoying the hangi meal.
Students will have the opportunity to interact with their hosts
and find out about the intriguing Maori culture.
Day 8
Depart Queenstown
This opportunity of a lifetime will help your teenager develop
in so many ways; you will be amazed at how they’ve grown
both socially and emotionally along their journey.
They will learn how important it is to communicate to fellow
students and guides alike, have an adventurous spirit and
challenge themselves in ways that would have previously been
impossible while pushing themselves out of their comfort zone
to experience something new and exciting. They will also learn
to love and appreciate the environment and why it’s so
important to take responsibility for it, as each and every person
can make a difference. Patience and determination to see things
through to the end, no matter what the circumstances, are part
of the learning experience as they also strive to be the best
they can be.
Students will take a last look around Queenstown,
get a bit of shopping done before they are
transferred to Queenstown Airport.
This program is designed to bring out the best in every student
that we encounter, and you will reap the rewards when they
get home, as you see a teenager who has grown in more ways
than one, contributing to the world around them.
