STORY
In early 2017 SchoolCare were approached by Alderwood School
to discuss the challenges they were facing with their current ICT
Infrastructure and also to discuss the proposed transition to an All
Through School.

3 individual sites (Belle Vue Infant School, Newport Junior and
Connaught School) onto a single cohesive network infrastructure
covering everything from Telephony, Internet Services and Servers.

Alderwood school is a new All Through School based in Aldershot Hampshire.
Formed in September 2017, Alderwood School is large campus distributed
across 3 sites all in relatively close proximity to one another, formerly known
as Belle View Infant School, Newport Junior School and The Connaught School.
The objective of an All Through School is to provide a consistent high quality
learning environment from Infant School, through to the sixth form.
THE CHALLENGE
The transition from 3 separate schools to a single academic institution
presents a great many challenges. Many of these challenges revolve
around the flow and availability of information between the sites and the
key enabler for this is ICT.
Amalgamating sites allows for an increase in efficiency by integrating
multiple repeated procedures and policies into single policies and
procedures to ensure they are completed quickly.
The ability for staff to communicate efficiently and effectively on whichever
site they are working was also an important challenge which needed to be
overcome.
THE SOLUTION
Alderwood School engaged with SchoolCare in early 2017 to submit an
outline proposal for the ICT Systems at Alderwood School. As part of the
proposal, careful analysis of existing systems as well as understanding
challenges which the schools were experiencing with their existing ICT
suppliers and systems was important to ensure that all pain points were
addressed as part of any potential deployment.
In May 2017 SchoolCare commenced the Alderwood School ICT Deployment,
by completely overhauling the communications infrastructure at all sites.
All 3 sites were connected to SchoolCare’s High Speed Broadband4 network
uplifting the broadband speed from 10 Mbps on the Infant and Junior
Sites to over 70Mbps and from 50 Mbps on the Connaught School Site
to 200Mbps. Having all 3 sites on the same high speed network ensures
full inter-site connectivity allowing all sites to exchange data between
themselves.
As part of this broadband uplift, SchoolCare also deployed a new voice
infrastructure to the Infant and Junior Sites. This new internal phone
system for the Alderwood School allows users at all sites to communicate
with one another with a simple 4 digit extension number. Parents calling

in from outside, also have a single
external telephone number, with
which they can contact all sites.
Staff regularly work across multiple
sites and therefore being able
to be contactable on all sites is
important. SchoolCare achieved
this by connecting users to our
mobile gateway, ensuring assigned
extensions “follow” users no matter
where they are by using their
Smartphones.
Over the course of the Summer
2017 break, SchoolCare engineers
undertook a full overhaul of all ICT
Systems across all 3 sites. All servers
were replaced on all 3 sites, with a
new Virtual Infrastructure deployed
on the Alderwood Senior Site. All
critical data is replicated between
sites ensuring it is always available.
Remote Access for all Alderwood
School Staff is also available
ensuring a complete flexible
working strategy.
THE RESULTS
As ICT underpins all aspects of
a modern school a great many
administrative and logistical issues
are alleviated by a fully integrated
ICT Infrastructure.
Staff from any site can logon to any
machine on any site and access their
data and all critical applications are
available across all sites ensuring a
familiar ICT working environment.
A fully integrated and cohesive
communications infrastructure
covers everything from voice
communication to student focussed
web filtering, ensuring that the
logistical challenges of a distributed
through school campus are negated
as much as possible.
