From the Vicarage
October 2017
I say from the Vicarage but I’ve seen preciouslittle of it lately being
caught up in the glitter and drama of Strictly, perhapsone of the most
unusual adventuresI’ve ever embarked on. Adventuresare about
discovery, and among my discoveriesso far isthat my enthusiasm for
dance isunequal to the physical giftsthat God saw fit to bestow me with;
that making something look effortlesstakesincredibly hard work; and
that the programme’senduring popularity isquite extraordinary. Lotsof
selfies, lotsof people singing the theme tune, one man at Euston did an
impression of me dancing and came rather a cropper. Oh dear.
But the programme’spopularity I think isnot only about the glamour and
the glitter and the dancing (certainly not that in my case); I think it’s
because of itsfeel good factor. Most reality showshave a darker edge to
them, particularly asthe processof elimination, necessary for the format,
reducesthe ranksone by one asthe weeksgo on. Of course, that’salso
the case in Strictly and already the highly likely prospect of being sent
home causesbutterfliesto flutter in the stomach (indeed, by the time you
read thisI may already be watching from the sidelines). But thisisnot
for fear of being humiliated; it’sbecause the experience isso joyous, so
wonderful, so captivating that we all want it to continue for aslong as
possible. And that’snot just for uscontestants: the dancers, the band,
and the crew all seem to take enormouspleasure in it aswe do.
I think it isa model for how we might live our lives: generously, riskily,
joyously out there, where even old dogscan learn new tricks.
Yoursin Christ,
Fr Richard.
2017
When the marquees are erected for
the festival we rely on the availability
of our helpers. They were erected on
Tuesday and that night the storm
decided that the refreshment tent
should be blown nearer to the church.
I would like to thank my husband
Bryan, Bob, Steve, David, Vicky, Jean
and John for coming to the rescue,
dismantling and re-erecting the
marquee, and for all they did prior to
the weekend.
Our arrangers displayed some
beautiful arrangements 'For all the
Saints' which were really admired.
Despite mixed weather the weekend
was a lovely social time, with the usual
lovely refreshments. Thank you to
Jean, Tracey and the team. The
Sunday morning service was 'Strictly'
different, then Festal Evensong closed
our weekend. Thank you to Jonathan
and Robert for directing and
conducting this. We hope to be able to
donate approx £2,000 to church funds.
Finedon Parish Council has been
busy over the past few months with a
village maintenance programme that
is bringing good responses from the
community.
In the autumn/winter the trees about
the village, that fall under the
umbrella of the Parish Council, are
being given an overhaul.
You will have noticed already that the
playground in Banks’ Park has new
equipment and the bins have been
upgraded and is very well used.
Further refurbishment of the existing
equipment is also on the cards.
You will all have noticed a concrete
shed in the Bank’s Park. If anybody
knows any history to it, please contact
me as the Council is keen to
understand its purpose.
The Council has been experiencing
an amount of vandalism throughout
the village such as recently signs
being ripped off and fences being
broken down into Pocket Park.
The Council has to repair and replace
these things but ultimately it is the
community that pays for it through the
Precept which is paid for by you on
your rates bill. Please, if you see any
vandalism taking place, contact the
Police on 101 and report the incident
to them for action.
With the help of the community, the
Council is planning a refurbishment of
the War Memorial on the
Wellingborough Road. Much help
and support has already been given
from various community groups and if
you would like to donate towards the
refurbishment, please contact the
Clerk, as we are a bit short of our
target to enable the project to go
ahead.
The Council is also looking at
refurbishing all the railings in Banks
Park and Tainty Field but this has
proved to be a much more expensive
project than was expected. We are
currently looking for funding to make
this happen as it will make a huge
impact to the street scape in Finedon.
The Cemetery is also on the radar
with the trees being done in the
autumn/winter and general
maintenance for the unused Chapels
underway. The Council is
considering putting the Chapels to
another use. If you know of any
group that would be interested in
hiring one or both of the Chapels on a
regular basis, please let me know as
this could enable the Council to
obtain funding for the conversion
work. In one of the Chapels there is a
19 th Century Briar which needs
refurbishment and a new home.
Again, if you know of anyone that
would be interested, please let me
know.
The Council is also interested in
supporting a bypass in Finedon. We
know that Highways work is due in
respect of the A6 but feel that a
bypass would alleviate many issues
in the village. Please do not hesitate
to contact me if you are keen to
support this. A working party will
7

need to be set up to drive this
forward.
The Council is trying to get the post
box reinstated that was taken away
when the Post Office closed and
Peter Bone MP is trying to put
pressure on the Post Office too. I will
keep you all “posted” with our
progress.
Please feel free to contact me should
you have anything you wish to bring
to the Council’s attention. Providing it
is within the Council’s remit, we will
try our best to make Finedon a better
place to live.
Concrete Hut
There is a small old concrete hut in
the Banks Park and it is thought that
this may date from World War 2.
Possibly a Home Guard /Fire
watchers hut. If so the Parish Council
will look at ways of preserving it for
posterity.
Can anyone out there supply any
information on this structure?
We are exploring other avenues but it
would be good if any resident could
help.
Many thanks
Press Release- 1st September
2017
Police & Crime
Commissioner Submits
Business Case to Home
Office to Govern
Northants Fire &
Rescue Ser vice
Following a
successful public
consultation, the
Police and Crime
Commissioner (PCC)
for Northamptonshire
has announced that he has
submitted the business case to
the Home Office, proposing that
governance of Northamptonshire
Fire and Rescue Service transfer
from Northamptonshire County
Council to his office. If accepted,
Stephen Mold will become
Northamptonshire Police, Fire and
Crime Commissioner.
The announcement follows an eight
week public consultation in which
1212 people shared their views on
the proposed change. The
consultation sought opinions from
people from across the county,
including fire service employees,
police personnel, and staff from
Northamptonshire County Council.
The results of the consultation
showed that overall 60.8 percent
agreed with the proposal for the
commissioner to govern the fire
service, 31.7 percent disagreed and
7.5 percent neither agreed nor
disagreed. Fire service employees
were significantly in favour of the
change with 92 percent of them
agreeing to the transfer.
Police and Crime Commissioner
Stephen Mold said:
“I am very happy with the outcome of
the consultation. I’m confident this
proposed change in governance is in
the best interests of everyone in
Northamptonshire. I’m particularly
pleased that people working for
Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue
service can see the benefits of the
transfer, with 92 percent of
respondents wanting to see the
change occur.
“The governance role is not
operational, and the day to day
running of the fire and rescue service
remains with the Chief Fire Officer.
My role is to provide a strong voice
for our local communities, holding the
Chief Fire Officer to account, and
ensuring the public get an effective
and efficient service that responds to
our county’s needs.
“The fire service in Northamptonshire
has faced significant funding cuts for
a number of years. It’s my ambition
to increase investment in the service,
particularly in the frontline. If the
business case is accepted then we
can begin the journey to make this a
reality, and help make
Northamptonshire safer.”
If the Home Office accepts the
business case the change of
governance would come in to effect
from April 2018. The proposal
follows recent changes in legislation
as part of the government’s desire to
create more collaboration between
emergency services at local levels.
Police and Crime Commissioner
Stephen Mold explained:
“Having a single governance model
is a sensible proposal.
Northamptonshire Police and the
Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue
9

Service already work collaboratively
and have led the way nationally on
joint working – sharing buildings,
vehicles and having joint operational
teams.
“There is scope for developing more
aligned strategic plans and increasing
this collaboration further. We would
look at opportunities for joint
attendance at incidents, providing
joint crime and fire prevention advice,
sharing more buildings and support
functions, and having joint
procurement.
“This provides us with a real
opportunity to make efficiency
savings and use those funds to
reinvest back into front-line services.”
Under the new proposals, both
organisations would remain separate
and keep their separate uniforms, and
carry on delivering separate skills.
The chief constable and chief fire
officer would continue to be
operationally independent and solely
responsible for the day-to-day running
of their own specific service and their
budgets would remain separate.
The Police and Crime Commissioner
is expecting a decision on the
proposal from the Home Office in the
late autumn.
Consultation Report are available to
Evacuees Re-visit
Finedon
We, the Bailey children, Joan, Ronald,
Leslene and Jean were evacuated from
Islington EC1 to Finedon.
Joan is 7 years older than us, she went
to live with school teachers Mrs Harris
and Miss Caroline Newman. She was
with them for 3 years.
Ronald, 2 years older than us went to
Mr & Mrs Chamberlain. He stayed with
them until the end of the war.
Leslene & I went to the cottage in the
High Street to Mr & Mrs Prowse but
after a few weeks, Mrs Prowse could
not cope with us. Leslene went to live
with Mr & Mrs Williamson in Dolben
Square.
The Cottage
The cottage has 3 bedrooms and an
attic which was my bedroom. It had a
very large garden with fruit trees and
Mr Prowse grew his own veg. There
was a barn at the bottom of the garden
where the boiler was and where I had a
bath once a week.
The road outside the cottage
The chemist was on one side,
on the other was a haberdasher and
then the pub. Opposite was a bakers.
They had a large roller oven. On
Sundays all the village cooked their
roast meat, Yorkshire puds etc. At the
side of the bakers was a large yard with
hens, ducks, etc. Next door to the
bakers was a grocers.
Leslene and I went to the Infant School
at the top of the High Street until we
were 7, we then went to the Girls
Charity School
Where we played.
I was allowed to go out and play and go
anywhere in the village.
1. In the waste leather at the side of
the factory which is now a green
2. Mill Lane in the water
3. Up the lanes to the rec.
4. Sometimes to the cinema
5. Cricket field where the open cast
quarry was.
I played with the Richardson twins, so I
was always in trouble when I was with
them.
We had parcels of clothes, egg,
chocolate powder from the Canadian
Red Cross. Parties by the Italian
Prisoner of War. I remember going to
Wellingborough to see the King &
Queen and the visit by Charles de
Gaulle. The village has changed so
much since I was a little girl.
I n My D a y
the ramblings of Hubert James
In my day it was about this time of
year that many folk would choose to
get married. I seem to remember it
was something to do with tax that
made it a popular time. Something
about rebates I think.
Course, it did mean that the vicar was
very busy with a queue of happy
couples lining up on a Saturday. This
led to the problem of excess confetti.
In them days confetti was built to last.
Bio degradable hadn’t been invented
and there was none of this edible
confetti that you get nowadays.
So what used to happen was that by
the end of the month, tons of tiny bits
of coloured tissue got washed down
the hill. This mixed in with the falling
leaves and formed a mush that
clogged up the drains at the bottom of
Bell Hill. We ended up with a
permanent puddle all the way through
the winter.
Now then it happened that there was
a chap called Wayne Moon – an
engineer- who lived in Church Street.
Wayne got fed up with having to ride
his bike through the puddle on his
way home from the Mulso. It also
happened that his daughter was
getting married.
Now Wayne’s missus was a
hairdresser and she spent the months
leading up to the big day, trying out
various styles on the bride-to-be.
Part of the process involved liberal
use of one of the new hairdryers that
had replaced the towel as a way of
drying hair. Wayne had never really
shown much interest in hair, let alone
methods of sculpting it but he was
impressed by the power the machine
had to blow.
He disappeared off to his shed and
set to work refining a spare hairdryer,
improving its performance and turning
the blow into a fierce jet of air. The
vicar agreed to let him plug it in at the
church so that he could test it out on
the many leaves covering the
churchyard. The jet worked and he
piled up the leaves into manageable
piles without breaking into a sweat.
Come the day of the wedding,
everything went off perfectly. After the
ceremony and a few photos, Wayne
produced the jet leafer and attacked
the confetti before setting off for the
reception.
The vicar loved it and took over
responsibility for leaf and confetti
clearing. Many’s the time Wayne
would pedal by the church and spot
him dancing around in the leaves.
The old cleric would shout across,
“Look, I’m leafing on a jet Wayne!”
God’s work and ours
This autumn, as many return to
work or education having
enjoyed at least a few weeks’
summer break, I am reminded of this
famous and beautifully crafted prayer;
Jesus, Master Carpenter of Nazareth,
who on the cross through wood and
nails did work our whole salvation,
wield well your tools in this your
workshop,
that we who come to you rough hewn
may by your hands be fashioned to a
truer beauty and a greater usefulness;
for the honour of your holy name.
Amen.
It uses Jesus’ earthly profession to
celebrate his life-saving death and
reflect on his ongoing work, carpenterlike
reshaping the world. However, I
find it a challenge to think that we are
his “raw material” and his “work in
progress” is us! The desire that we
might be useful and attractive in his
service resonates deeply with our own
longing to be better disciples, not least
in our daily working lives.
This prayer always reminds me of
the equally famously practical words
of St Theresa of Avila;
“Christ has no body now but yours,
no hands, no feet on earth but yours.
Yours are the eyes through which he
looks compassion on the world.
Yours are the feet with which he walks
to do good.
Yours are the hands with which he
blesses all the world.”
people who allow God to do things
to them so they might do things for
other people”. As a bishop I have
the great excitement of meeting lots
of people whom God is changing
and who are making a difference to
their communities. You are those
people, Christ’s body here on earth.
May God continue to bless His
work in us.
With my love, prayers and best
wishes,
