We are at 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 The It’s a Year of Magic at Maine West High School By Dr. Audrey Haugan, Principal Fall 2017 Principal’s Newsletter Maine West High School, Des Plaines, Illinois While another school year started just weeks ago, in some ways it seems like it was a long time ago. The events of the world around us have heightened awareness about the needs of others, and as always, Maine West has shown what an amazing group of students and staff we have. We had an outpouring of support from students, staff and families for the Quintero family when they lost their father and two sons. We helped them with food and money to help pay their rent, and directed them to resources to help them deal with their grief and other needs. Just weeks later, Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, and we again found ourselves in a position to help others. We’ve adopted a high school that is located outside of Houston, whose families were hit particularly hard. They lost most of their worldly possessions and are hardly prepared to go back to school just weeks after losing so much. In just one minute today, we raised over $2,400.00, and the YouCaring account for them raised close to another $1,000.00 in just one day. Families from Des Plaines are giving to families they have never met; showing that giving when you can to those less fortunate is something we all believe. Our theme for teachers this year is “magic.” We want to inspire your students and make them feel like time spent with us is like the definition says, “fascinating, captivating, charming, enchanting, entrancing, spellbinding, magnetic, irresistible and magnetic.” We want those moments to happen in our classrooms and in our school, where a student says, “Wow!” on a daily basis! Time and time again, you have heard me say what a great place Maine West is, and I’m proud of something or someone every single day. I do not exaggerate when I say Maine West is the Best, and hope you feel that positive energy from your children as well. I hope you feel the magic we feel at Maine West as well. Your support is awesome and appreciated. Here’s to another great year! Follow us on Twitter @Maine_West
