ONGOING EVENTS
Until 26th November
Snowdogs Tails in Wales
Around Cardiff and the Vale of
Glamorgan
A pack of Snowdogs will be
unleashed onto the city’s
streets, iconic buildings, open
spaces and across the Vale
as part of an extraordinary
public art trail. The trail is free
of charge, but there is a nominal
change for the app of 99p. The
event has been organised by children’s
hospice charity Tŷ Hafan, public art producers
Wild in Art and Penguin Random House.
The theme was inspired by The Snowman
and the Snowdog, the animated sequel to
Raymond Briggs’ iconic book and film The
Snowman. Before going out on their walkies,
each Snowdog was named and decorated
with its own unique design. The designs came
from both amateur and well-known artists
including Julian McDonald OBE and Steven
Brown. There will also be 57 pups on the trail
which have been designed by local schools and
community clubs. Each Snowdog is sponsored
by a local business and individually designed
by a different artist, and they are all on a
mission to raise much-needed funds for Tŷ
Hafan to support children with life-limiting
conditions and their families. More than 40 of
the mighty mutts will be located across the
region’s most iconic hotspots, streets and open
spaces. Tel: 029 2053 2199
Whilst her mad / bad stepmother and her illmannered
step-sisters prepare for the Royal
Ball, graceful Cinderella can only dream of
dancing with the dashing Prince. Later that
evening, her rags become a glittering gown
shadows across the boughs of the Christmas
tree and all the presents beneath. When
midnight strikes we are swept away to a
fairytale world where nothing is quite as
King and his mouse army battle with the
Nutcracker Prince and we travel through
Ballet: Swan Lake
The greatest romantic ballet of all time is
brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting
and unforgettable score. From the
impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom
to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in
perfect formation this compelling tale of
tragic romance has it all. From Odile, the
temptress in black tulle as she seduces
the Prince by spinning with captivating
precision to the spellbound purity of the
swan queen, Odette as she flutters with
emotional intensity, the dual role of Odette
/ Odile is one of ballet’s most unmissable
A ‘Mint’ Half Term
to Remember
Rain or shine there are plenty of ‘mint’
activities for the whole family to participate
in this half term at The Royal Mint
Experience. Whether it is getting up close
and handling creepy crawlies, looking
the part this Halloween or becoming adventurers amongst the stars. The Royal Mint
Experience is ready to welcome all families and friends to be a part of these fun filled
days. The Creepy Crawly Roadshow kick starts the half term on the 30th October,
allowing you to get up close with the animals, hold them and learn some fascinating and
fun facts along the way. The Royal Mint Experience will transform into a spooky site on
the 31st October, with opportunities for you to join in on the ghostly celebrations. You
can transform yourself into terrifying characters with some face paint as well as a chance
for you to bring out your creative side with some balloon modelling. The 3rd November
will bring an end to the half term entertainment, by taking you on an out of this world
experience. You will have the opportunity to become explorers in space amongst the
planets and the stars. The Royal Mint Experience provides a great opportunity to go
behind the scenes and discover stories from The Royal Mint’s 1,000 year history. Discover
how coins were made and how they are made today through a series of walk-through
exhibition zones that bring the organisation’s rich heritage to life.
October Half Term Rugby Camps
For ages 6-14 yrs. Why not get your children active and taking part in indoor and outdoor
activities by signing them up to a Welsh Rugby Camp? Every session is enjoyable and
interactive with WRU qualified coaches ensuring participants practice and develop skills
such as running, side stepping, kicking, catching, tackling and much more. Our intention is
that every child goes away from each session with a smile on their face and new friends for
the future. We run 2 day camps for boys and girls and a 1 day camp for girls only across the
Dragons region and North Wales for ages 6-14 years. Skills development aside, children who
sign up to a camp also get the chance to meet one of their heroes as a Welsh international
player attends to meet the youngsters. We
aim to enhance and engage a child’s physical,
psychological and social characteristics whilst still
having fun with their peers. Whether it’s their first
sports camp on their own, or they are already on
their way to becoming the next Leigh Halfpenny
or Rachel Taylor, we guarantee your little one will
come home tired but raring for the next day.
Curiosity is where it begins…
A work of art, a scientific breakthrough, your daughter’s
amazing Lego creation - they all start with curiosity. Being
curious is a fundamental part of being human. For the
educational charity previously known as At-Bristol, the
importance of nurturing this impulse has led to a bold new
direction and a new name. We The Curious opened its doors on
the 14 September with a new open plan foyer, a new feature
exhibit celebrating the city of Bristol, and a new ambition
to empower people of all ages and backgrounds by firing
their curiosity about the world around us. The new name
and this initial refurbishment is just the beginning. Over the next few years, the ground
floor experience will be completely redesigned around questions -10,000 of them in
fact- gathered from people across the city of Bristol and beyond. So, get thinking, ask the
kids: what’s your burning question? What is it that has always puzzled you? It can be as off
the wall or straight forward serious as you like. Who knows, you might see your question
featuring when the exhibition is complete in 2020. In the meantime, there’s plenty to see
and do at We The Curious this Autumn –watch galaxies collide in the Planetarium, explore
our amazing brains in this season’s live show, and create your dream ball run in the second
floor workshop, complete with scaffolding and plenty of drain pipes - open during halfterm
week (Mon – Fri) www.wethecurious.org Email: curious@wethecurious.org or use
#wethecurious to contribute your burning questions.
A guide to applying for a school place in Cardiff
Starting primary school or moving from
primary school to secondary school is an
exciting time for children and parents.
It can also be a stressful time as decisions
are made on the schools to apply for, and
parents and children then wait to see if their
application has been successful. But there
are a few key things that can be done which
will help to make the process as smooth as
possible:
• Visiting schools before applying to get
as much information as possible – a full list
of schools in Cardiff can be found online via
www.cardiff.gov.uk/schools
• Submitting applications by the relevant
closing dates given below
• Applying for five schools for transfer
to secondary school, or three schools for
admission to primary school.
This year, the school admissions
arrangements in Cardiff are slightly different
to other local authorities, as it is the first in
Wales to pilot a co-ordinated system. This
means that some of the faith and foundation
secondary schools can be included on the
one form. In the past, those applications had
to be made separately, direct to the schools.
More information on the application
process for the different types of schools
(community schools, faith schools and
foundation schools) is available online at
www.cardiff.gov.uk/schooladmissions
Timeline and tips for
making an application
October
• Ask for information about schools of
interest and go to open days - some schools
don’t have open days, but you might be able
to ring and make an appointment to visit
• Decide on the schools you want to apply
for and put them in order of preference
• 2nd October 2017 - the date online
applications for secondary schools
open in Cardiff (www.cardiff.gov.uk/
schooladmissions)
November
• 13th November 2017 - date online
applications for primary schools open
December
• 4th December 2017 - closing date for
secondary schools applications
January
• 8th January 2018 – closing date for primary
schools applications
Some important things to bear in mind
when applying
• A school place won’t be offered if you
don’t make an application
• Listing the same school more than once
doesn’t give you a better chance of getting a
place there
• A place at your catchment school isn’t
guaranteed, but it is best to include it in your
list of preferences, even if you put it lower
down
• Accepting an offer of a place at a lower
preference school doesn’t jeopardise your
chances of getting an offer for your higher
preference - you can still accept an offer from
your preferred school if a place becomes
available at a later date
• A sibling already in a school doesn’t
guarantee a place there, but make sure you
include their details on your application
• Going to the nursery attached to your
preferred school doesn’t mean an automatic
reception class place - a new application
needs to be made
A late application can seriously affect the
chances of getting a place, so make a note of
the closing dates, here’s a reminder:
