with the National Trust 

We’ve got lots of ideas 

to keep your kids 

busy this autumn. 

Here’s just some of what you 

can do at these great places in 

North Yorkshire: 

Beningbrough Hall, Gallery 

& Gardens, near York 

Take flight and join us this halfterm 

as Beningbrough explores 

all things owl related. There’ll 

be visits from feathered friends 

to celebrate the opening of a 

new sculpture exhibition ‘oh 

wise owl’. Come and find the 

14 new owl themed sculptures 

around the garden. There’s also 

a spotter trail to follow and you 

can make your own owl mask. 

Owls will be with us Wednesday 

- Fridays, 25 - 27 October and 

1 - 3 November. 

For Hallowe’en itself, come 

dressed in your scariest fancy 

dress for the annual costume 

parade and listen to magical 

tales told by professional story 

teller Eden, from Stories Alive. 

Fountains Abbey & Studley 

Royal, near Ripon 

Throughout October and 

November pick up an autumn 

explorer map to discover all 

that’s amazing about Fountains 

Abbey this season. Use the map 

to get to grips with the wildlife 

on the estate using touch, sight 

and sound. 

During half-term pop by 

Swanley Grange to get stuck 

into heritage crafts to try your 

hand at weaving with bright 

autumn-coloured wool. You 

can also join ‘Today’s Story’, 

a family friendly tour, where 

snippets of history from the 

abbey and gardens are brought 

to life in a short half hour walk. 

Every Saturday in October 

(plus Friday 28 October) the 

abbey ruins will be floodlit for 

Fountains by Floodlight. Bring 

a torch and take your little ones 

for an early evening walk around 

the abbey. 

Nunnington Hall, near 

Helmsley 

There’ll be haunted happenings 

and ghoulish goings on at 

Nunnington during half-term. 

From 26 – 29 October kids 

can follow the haunted trail 

around the house whilst on 

28 and 29 October there’ll be 

free half-hourly tours to hear 

of Nunnington’s ghostly past.

Children in Need – November 17th 

‘Give Pudsey your round pounds’, new 

partnership urges. BBC Children in Need will 

be partnering with The Royal Mint and HM 

Treasury on their £1 coin campaign, joining 

forces for Pudsey’s Round Pound Countdown. 

Kicking off a nationwide campaign, BBC 

Children in Need, The Royal Mint and HM 

Treasury will challenge the country to join 

Pudsey to hunt down the millions of remaining 

round £1 coins, and put them to good use by 

donating to BBC Children in Need. With less 

than four weeks to go before the round £1 stops 

being accepted in shops and restaurants, BBC 

Children in Need is encouraging everyone to 

check their piggy banks, empty coat pockets 

and dive down the back of sofas to dig out any 

lurking round pound coins. There are thousands 

of BBC Children in Need drop off points across 

the country where you can handover your

Steve’s Walk 

On Saturday 16th September, the employees (past 

and present) of Primary Times magazine, took on 

the challenge of a 10K walk in memory of their 

former boss Steve Edwards who very sadly passed 

away in December 2016. The ladies, joined by 

Shareholder Doug Ash, decided a fitting tribute 

(and one that Steve would really appreciate) was to 

walk between two of his favourite pubs. The walk 

concluded with a much appreciated pub lunch 

and the ladies finished their day with an invitation 

to a local rugby match, where the spectators 

happily boosted their fund raising. The Primary 

Times ladies, and Doug! successfully raised over 

£2,800 for Sue Ryder Hospice, Nettlebed. They 

embarked upon this fund raising day to thank the 

staff of Sue Ryder for looking after Steve and his 

family in the most kindest and gentlest of ways.

generous support.

YOUR SCHOOL CAN WIN £1,000 FOR THEIR BREAKFAST CLUB 

Schools in your area have the chance to 

win £1,000 for their pre-school club by 

entering the annual Kellogg’s Breakfast 

Club Awards. 

Any school with a breakfast club can enter 

the awards. One club from each region of 

the UK will win £1,000 for its club and a 

Grand Winner will receive a breakfast club 

makeover worth up to £5,000. Winners 

will also be invited to attend an awards 

ceremony in The Houses of Parliament. 

These awards champion the people 

and activities that make breakfast clubs 

fantastic – from inspirational volunteers 

to invaluable extra learning sessions.

the last 19 years and offers funding, food 

and training to 3,000 clubs across the UK.

Star Linguists reach the National Final 

Scarborough College Prep School pupils have this year entered into the national Junior 

Language Challenge competition which is open to all primary schools. The competition is 

aimed at encouraging children to learn new languages. 

Scarborough College had 15 pupils enter the first stage of the competition where they 

learnt Italian and there were some very encouraging results. Four children went through to 

the semi finals where the next language was Japanese. Ebin and Yoyo did exceptionally well 

in the semi final, with Ebin being the overall winner, earning themselves a place each in the 

National Final. This will be held on Friday 13 October at Language Show Live, at the Business 

Design Centre in Islington, London. 

Good luck to both of them as they are challenged in their third and final language - Zulu!!!

Restless Earth 

Fifty years ago geologists

Woodland Trail? 

If you are feeling brave this half term, 

why not venture over to Burton Agnes Hall 

and take part in their spooky woodland 

trail? Every Halloween, fearless visitors 

are welcomed to an eerie hunt round the 

Hall’s atmospheric woodland, where clues 

are hidden amidst dramatic and creative 

spooky Halloween scenes, with haunted graveyards, ghostly figures and mummified zoo 

animals! Once the entire puzzle has been solved, a treat awaits in the Gift Shop. 

After the thrill of the spooky woodland trail, visitors can relax in the comfort of the 

courtyard and enjoy homemade meals, light bites and indulgent treats in the café, while

A bustling street fair, celebrating the

Boyzone’s Shane Lynch stars in North Yorkshire’s biggest panto, 

Robin Hood And The Babes In The Wood, from 21-31 December at 

the York Barbican. The spectacular family pantomime also stars Ben 

Adams from A1, and EastEnders’ Fatboy, Ricky Norwood. Also joining 

the all star cast will be Phats And Small singer Ben Ofoedu, 90’s 

pop sensation Lolly, and Jaz Ellington from The Voice. Local actress 

Beth Stevens completes the line up as Maid Marian. Tickets are
