If there is one word that can describe what just recently
happened at the end of August it is: INCREDIBLE. Here
in Grand Lakes, as I walked around our community
assessing and reviewing the complete environment, I
realize that Katy, Texas was hit hard by the storm. We
are going to feel the effects of this hurricane for long
time, but we will come out better prepared, stronger
and wiser. The release of the Barker Reservoir was scary.
Even more frightening were the pounding, unforgiving
rains that created high water accumulation near our
homes but closest to our souls. Did you know so many of
your neighbors evacuated? Many of our neighbors took
shelter at nearby places. It is all very heartbreaking. We
were trapped in our homes as water created a boundary
that we could not cross. Many of us ran out of food and
necessities. Worse, majority of us did not prepare. Our
city leaders WERE AWESOME. They did everything they
could to prepare us. Ultimately, the decision was ours to
listen and act. At the end of the storm, as I reflect on all
that has transpired, Houston did good. We opened our
hearts, homes, wallets, boats to each other. However, let’s
not let this servant leadership end. Giving is infinite. God
bless everyone. Questions, comments:
FISHING IN GRAND LAKES PONDS
IS STRICTLY CATCH AND RELEASE
Fishing in Grand Lakes ponds is
strictly Catch and Release. The
use of barbless hooks is encouraged
because the use of these
hooks minimizes harm to the
fish. There are a lot of turtles in
our ponds and it’s not unusual
for a turtle to ‘take the bait.’ Here
again, the use of barbless hooks
makes it much easier to release the turtle back into the water without damage.
Barbless hooks (bare and lures) are not typically available off the shelf at local
Katy and Houston fishing supply shops such as BassPro Shop, Academy, Dicks,
David’s Tackle Box (Rosenberg) or Fishing Tackle Unlimited. The demand for
them is just not high enough to warrant shelf space.
Both bare barbless hooks and a wide selection of barbless lures are available
on-line from BassPro Shop, Amazon and Walmart. Barbless flies are also available
on-line. A great site for barbless flies is bigyflyco.com. On-line prices for
bare barbless hooks, barbless lures and barbless flies are reasonable.
As an alternative to purchasing barbless hooks, a barbed hook (whether bare,
lure or fly) can be changed to barbless. The correct way to change a barbed
hook into a barbless hook is illustrated in the following photo. This process is
not reversible, so the hook will be forever barbless.
Grand Lakes fishermen should either take a number of barbless hooks, lures
and flies from their collection, remove the barbs and then set them aside in
their tackle or go on-line and purchase barbless hooks they can use in the Grand
Lakes ponds. Doing this will help ensure a healthy fish population for all to enjoy.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
TRICK-OR-TREAT SAFETY TIPS
• Go During Safe Trick Or Treat Times: A good trick or treat time
is right after an early dinner.
• Steer Clear Of Masks: With face paint, it is easier for your child
to see where they are going.
• Be Visible: Choose costumes that are brightly colored
so that they are easier to see in the dark.
• Never Go Alone: It is important that your children have
an adult with them at all times.
• Walking Tips: Be sure that your children understand simple
traffic rules, such as stopping and looking both ways
before crossing the street and staying in a crosswalk.
• Knock On Doors That You Know: Encourage your children to only
trick-or-treat at homes where they know the inhabitants.
• Don’t Go Inside: Remind your little ones that they should never
go inside anybody’s home while trick-or-treating.
• Stay On Track: Stay on streets and in neighborhoods that are well
lit and where there are plenty of people around.
• Say No!: Stranger danger is important to remember no matter
how old your kids are, even while trick-or-treating.
• Taste-Testing Patience: Make sure kids know that trick or treating
is for gathering candy, not eating it as they receive it.
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
OCTOBER 2017
One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
However, with early detection and treatment, you can greatly
improve your chance of survival.
3 STEPS TO EARLY DETECTION
Early detection means finding the cancer before it spreads to other
parts of the body. Although breast cancer cannot be completely prevented,
early detection provides the greatest possibility of successful
treatment. By following these three steps, you will help increase your
chance of detecting cancer early.
1. BREAST SELF-AWARENESS
Breast self-awareness can help you become familiar with how your
breasts normally look and feel. Knowing this will help you identify any
changes in your breasts that should be reported to your health care
professional promptly. If you find a lump, schedule an appointment
with your doctor, but don’t panic - 8 out of 10 lumps are not cancerous.
Changes to look for include:
• A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area
• A change in the size or shape of the breast
• Dimpling or puckering in the skin of the breast
• A nipple turned inward into the breast
• Discharge (fluid) from the nipple
• Scaly, red or swollen skin on the breast, nipple or areola (the dark
area of skin at the center of the breast)
You should see your health care provider about any of these symptoms.
Often these symptoms are not due to cancer, but if you notice
any changes in your body, tell your health care provider immediately
so that the problems can be diagnosed and treated.
2. WELL-WOMAN EXAM
It is recommended that women visit their family physician or gynecologist
each year for an annual Well-Woman Exam. In addition to a
routine pelvic exam and pap smear, the doctor may perform a brief
breast exam to check for abnormalities. The Well-Woman Exam is a
great opportunity for you to discuss with your health care provider
any questions or concerns you have regarding your breast health.
For example, your doctor may help you to determine the most appropriate
frequency for your early detection steps.
3. MAMMOGRAM
In its early stages, breast cancer doesn’t usually cause symptoms.
NBCF recommends that women ages 40 and older get a mammogram
every year. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It is a safe way
to detect cancerous tumors and other abnormal breast conditions
and women who have screening mammograms have a lower chance
of dying from breast cancer than women who do not have screening
mammograms. Mammograms can detect cancer or other problems
before a lump becomes large enough to be detectable to the touch.
They provide an effective way to find breast cancer in its early stages
when treatment is usually the most successful. Mammograms are
considered safe, quick and relatively painless.
8 SOCIAL SECURITY MYTHS DEBUNKED (PART 3 OF 3)
Last month in Part 2… Three myths about the Social Security
system. This month… The last three myths.
Social Security provides critical benefits to more than 50 million
people a year; almost 170 million workers contribute a chunk of
their paycheck, to the tune of $900 billion annually, to keep those
benefits flowing. You’d think with all the people and money involved
that we’d all understand exactly how the program works. Not so...
Myth #1 The Maximum Social Security Benefit Is $2,600.
Myth #2 Social Security Will Go Broke Within the Next 20 Years.
Myth #3 You Don’t Have to Pay Taxes on Social Security Benefits.
Myth #4 Due to Social Security’s Shortfall, You Won’t Get Back the
Dollars You Contributed to the System.
Myth #5 Raising the Bar on Earnings Subject to Payroll Taxes Would
Fix the System’s Shortfall.
Myth #6: If You Don’t Claim Benefits Early, You Risk Not Getting
Your Fair Share. If you claim benefits as soon as you’re eligible, at
62, you get a 25% to 30% reduction in your benefit compared with
what you’d get at full retirement age (66 for people born between
1943 and 1954; 67 for those born in 1960 and later). For every year
you wait to take it after full retirement age, until you reach age 70,
you get an 8% boost in benefits. Social Security actuaries calculate
benefits with the goal of equalizing the total amount you get
over your life expectancy whether you take benefits early, at full
retirement age or at age 70. If you die before you reach your life
expectancy, you won’t get your “fair” share regardless of when you
claim Social Security. If you live longer than your life expectancy,
you’ll get more than your allotted amount.
Fair or not, if you have reason to believe you won’t reach your life
expectancy, you might as well take the benefit early and enjoy the
money. If you think you’ll live well beyond your expected lifetime,
you may be better off waiting until 70 because the bigger benefits
over time will add up to much more than if you collected earlier, for
a lower amount.
Grand Lakes Community Newsletter | October 2017
Myth #7: If You Take Social Security and Keep Working, You Must Give
Back Most of Your Benefits. It’s true that Social Security beneficiaries
younger than full retirement (currently 66) who keep working and
earn more than the cap-$15,720 in 2016-lose $1 in benefits for every
$2 they earn over that cap. But this rule, known as the earnings test,
eases in the year you reach full retirement age. In that year, you
give up $1 for every $3 you earn over a much larger cap-$41,880 in
2016-before the month you reach your full retirement age. Starting
in the month of your birthday, there’s no limit on how much you
can earn. Better yet, Social Security will adjust your benefits going
forward with the goal of insuring that, over your life expectancy,
you’ll be repaid every dime you lost to the earnings test.
Myth #8: Once You Start Taking Social Security, You Can’t Change
Your Mind. Actually, you can, in a couple of circumstances. Here’s
the first scenario. Say you file for benefits at 62, when you first
become eligible. Because you’re claiming before full retirement
age (now 66), you get a 25% lifetime reduction in benefits. Then
you get a windfall and no longer need the money. If you withdraw
your application within the first 12 months of filing, you can pay
back the benefits you’ve received, interest-free and erase the 25%
reduction. When you finally do claim benefits, you get whatever
you’re due at the age you apply.
The second scenario: After claiming benefits early, you can ask
Social Security to suspend your benefits once you reach full retirement
age, up to age 70. You don’t have to pay back the benefits, but
neither do you erase the fact you claimed early. Your future benefits
will still start from a lower base, but that base can be pumped up
by the 8%-a-year delayed-retirement credits you earn after age
66. So, while claiming at 62 cuts your benefits to 75% of the age 66
level, adding four years’ worth of delayed-retirement credits (32%)
puts your age 70 benefit at 99% of your full retirement age check.
To learn more about either strategy, contact your local Social Security
office and ask how to withdraw your application or suspend
your benefit. Be aware that if you’re already enrolled in Medicare
Part B, you’ll be billed for premiums that otherwise would have
been subtracted from your Social Security paycheck.
hard with their lawncare and landscaping. Come with a scooper
and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking up after your
pets shows your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our
beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked.
3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations.
4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they
can be returned to you if lost.
5. Spay or neuter your pet.
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find
relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity.
Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers.
If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these
bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your
neighbors will thank you!
GRAND LAKES DOG PARK
• Training. Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how
much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog
barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog
indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to
neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street
noise, or leave a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a
cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a
pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a
day-care facility once or twice a week.
Krenek Printing sends our thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by Hurricane Harvey. As residents of the communities
we serve, we are deeply saddened by the mass flooding and destruction brought to homes, businesses and property. We will
continue to provide personalized subdivision newsletters with information from neighborhood management, surrounding
community groups, and local relief information to support the cleaning, rebuilding, and recovery of the communities in the
wake of Hurricane Harvey. In the story below, a local resident shares what she believes makes our communities amazing…
people willing to help each other by showing one another generosity, community, kindness and humanity. Krenek Printing
agrees that YOU are what makes this city great and we are proud to be part of your local community each month.
Hurricane Harvey and Houstonians
by W. Baecke, Cypress Resident
On August 26th, as I ushered
my students out of class with a
cheerful “See you next week,”
many remarked that school
would be closed due to flooding
so they would not see me next
week. I chuckled while advising
them to stop wishing for the
return of summer vacation and
not to forget their assignments
due Monday. After 4 days of rain,
flooding, and the constant reports
of more destruction on the news,
I was feeling foolish at my lack
of respect for the weather, guilty
that my house was dry when
friends and family only miles
down the road had lost everything,
and generally disheartened
at Houston’s situation. The more
I watched the news broadcast the
devastation, viewed social media
with awful stories of anger and
hate, and began to take inventory
of what it would take to get my
life back to normal, I felt bitter,
annoyed and grumpy. Thankfully,
an eventful trip to the local pharmacy,
helped me see a different
view of the situation.
After 4 days of rain with a sick
baby, I was out of baby fever
reducer. With frazzled nerves, my
fevered, fussy 1-year-old hanging
off my hip, and my 7-year-old
complaining about the outing in
general, a young man approached
us and asked if I needed help. It
was clear he didn’t work for the
store as he was not in uniform
and didn’t have on a name tag,
but he could see I was having
trouble locating what I needed
on the bare shelves while juggling
the kids, diaper bag, pacifier, etc.
As he helped me find the last
bottle of off-brand infant pain
reliever, I silently prayed my
oldest daughter, who was quietly
staring down the young man with
furrowed brow, would not ask
any loud, inappropriate questions
about his long hair, dark nail
polish, or pants that did not sit
anywhere near his waist.
As he helped me look for the medicine,
we made small talk and he
disclosed that his family had been
rescued a few hours before and he
was thankful to be safely staying
at a relative’s home until he could
get back to his house to assess the
damage. This whole encounter
took less than 3 minutes. I thanked
him profusely and we parted ways.
As we drove home, my daughter
began to ask her questions, and
to my surprise, they had nothing
to do with the young man’s
appearance. She wanted to know
how he would get the water out of
his house; how he would know it
was safe to go home and how he
would get there; how he would
get the money to buy more things
if his stuff was ruined; and so on.
She was very concerned for this
young man and his family. I told
her about all the organizations
that were already providing for
people like the man with things
like shelter, food, clothes, and
toiletries. When I looked back,
my daughter was crying. She said
that she was so happy that everyone
wanted to help each other
and that she wanted to help too
by going through her clothes and
toys when we got home.
In that moment, all the negative
feelings I was harboring disappeared.
I was reminded that
doing things for others and being
a decent neighbor is what makes
Houston amazing.
I am thankful that young man
helped me today. His helpful
spirit, despite his desperate situation,
helped remind me about
what is important – people. I
know Houston has a long road to
recovery ahead, but I also know
that Houstonians will take on the
challenge with generosity, kindness,
compassion and love.
How to Carve
A Pumpkin
When it comes to pumpkin carving, the idea is to have fun. We’ve
got tips on carving the best pumpkin, as well as how to pick a good
pumpkin for carving!
HOW TO PICK A GOOD PUMPKIN FOR CARVING
Look for one that is a little misshapen. Inspect it for soft spots (especially
the end opposite the stem). Reject a pumpkin that has soft spots, they
will cause it to deteriorate quickly. Remember, your pumpkin doesn’t
have to sit on its base, in fact, that’s often its weakest spot.
Let the pumpkin guide the shape of the face: An elongated pumpkin
should have an elongated face. A fat and happy pumpkin should have
a fat and happy face.
HOLLOW OR WHOLE?
There are two reasons for hollowing: (1) If the inside is going to be
exposed (through the mouth, etc.), it looks better if it is hollowed
neatly. (2) If you plan to light the pumpkin from the inside, it must be
hollow. You can hollow it out from a hole in the back instead of the top,
so that the look of the face isn’t affected. If you’re illuminating with a
candle, you need to hollow from the top to allow the heat and smoke
to escape.
THE TOOLS
Use a water-based marker to outline the face that you want to carve.
First, draw a line down the center to establish symmetry. Then sketch
the nose, the approximate center of the face. Once you’re satisfied with
the details, trace over the lines using a permanent marker. For carving,
basic kitchen implements, such as a paring knife or a steak knife with
a standard - not serrated - blade that’s not going to bend, work well.
You can also use a standard jigsaw blade. Otherwise, improvise: Use a
melon-ball cutter to make circles, for example.
MAKE A FACE
To achieve a three-dimensional appearance, carve the entire pumpkin.
Exaggerate the features. (If you aren’t sure what teeth really look like or
how the gum line works, smile and look in the mirror.) If the pumpkin is
frowning, carve wrinkles under the mouth. To add character, carve a lot
of “crow’s feet” lines around the eyes. Consider using the stem as the
nose and inserts such as radishes for the eyes or cut eyeballs from the
back of the pumpkin and hold them in place with toothpicks.
CARVE WITH CARE
Use two hands at all times: one to control the blade and the other to
control the pressure with which you cut (and thus the depth). Take care
not to jab the blade into the pumpkin; you don’t want to cut all the
way through the rind - except to determine its depth. The thickness of
the rind will vary, not only from pumpkin to pumpkin, but also within
one pumpkin. To determine your pumpkin’s average depth, cut a
core sample where you want an eye or a nostril to be. Keep that piece
nearby as a reminder of how deep you can safely cut.
ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTS
Pumpkins, which are actually a fruit, not a vegetable, are 90 percent
water, so after carving they usually last only three days to a week. A
jack-o’-lantern with a surface carving will last longer than one that
is cut all the way through. Putting a candle or other light inside will
shorten its life span, as the heat that results can “cook” the pumpkin
and reduce its longevity to a matter of hours. For a bright, shiny finish,
spray Armor All on the pumpkin and rub it in. Paint will not preserve a
pumpkin. However, if you decide to paint your pumpkin for decoration,
use a water-based latex paint and wait at least an hour after carving
so that the cuts you have made in the pumpkin have a chance to dry.
Jalapeno
Mummies
10 Jalapeno Peppers
8 oz Softened Cream Cheese
8 oz Pepper Jack Cheese
1/2 tsp Minced Garlic
Pinch Salt
Pinch Pepper
1 Scallion
Candied Eyeballs
Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
WITCH HAT CUPCAKES
CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 large egg
3/4 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
VANILLA BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
1 cup unsalted butter softened
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 3/4 cup powdered sugar
1 tbsp heavy whipping cream
food coloring green and orange
HAT DECORATIONS
Oreo Thins 1 per cupcake
Hershey Kisses 1 per cupcake
Candy Corn cut along color lines
For the Chocolate Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a muffin tin
with cupcake liners, then set aside. In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking
powder, salt, and cocoa. Set aside. Using a stand mixer (or hand mixer + large
bowl), beat together vegetable oil and egg on low for 30 seconds. Add milk
and vanilla extract and mix until combined, about 1 minute. Keeping speed
on low, slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, about 1/2 cup
at a time. Once all dry ingredients have been added, mix just until the dry
ingredients are no longer visible, about another 2-3 minutes. Be careful not
to overmix. Pour batter into prepared muffin tin, filling containers about 1/2
way full. Bake chocolate cupcakes in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until a
tester toothpick comes out clean. Let cupcakes cool in the tin for 5 minutes,
then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Preheat your over to 400° in line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Wash then Slice your jalapeño peppers in half lengthwise and scoop
out the inside. In a large mixing bowl, use a cheese grater to shred your
block of pepper jack cheese. Chop a scallion in tiny pieces. Mix in your
cream cheese, scallion pieces, garlic, pepper and salt to your shredded
cheese. Fill your jalapeño peppers with your cheese mixture. Now
unroll your crescent rolls into rectangles (leave two triangles together
and pinch the middle together). Use a pizza cutter to cut each crescent
rectangle lengthwise into four even pieces. Wrap one or two pieces
around each pepper, leaving a small opening for the eyes. Bake for 10-
12 minutes. Right when you take your mummies out of the oven, add
two candy eyes in each top opening.
Witch Hat
Cupcakes
For the Vanilla Buttercream Frosting:
Using a stand mixer (or hand mixer + large bowl), beat butter and vanilla
extract on high until fluffy. Drop speed to medium and slowly add sugar to
butter, mixing thoroughly in between. If mixture gets too dry, add the 1 tbsp
heavy whipping cream. If using food coloring, separate about 1/3 to 1/2 cup
frosting to a separate bowl. Add green food coloring to the larger portion of
frosting and orange food coloring to the smaller portion and mix thoroughly.
Putting it all together:
Decorate chocolate cupcakes with the green frosting (to create the “hair”
for the witch) using a decorating tip of your choice. Press an Oreo on to
the top of the green frosting (to create the brim of the hat). Using another
piping bag, add about 1/2 tablespoon of orange frosting on top of the
Oreo. Press an unwrapped Hershey Kiss into the frosting, using even
pressure so that a ring of orange frosting appears around the base of the
Kiss (this creates the top of the hat). Place a piece of cut candy corn into
the orange frosting (for the hat buckle). I used only yellow pieces for this.
