October is
Breast Cancer
Awareness
Month
One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
However, with early detection and treatment, you can greatly improve
your chance of survival.
3 STEPS TO EARLY DETECTION
Early detection means finding the cancer before it spreads to other parts
of the body. Although breast cancer cannot be completely prevented,
early detection provides the greatest possibility of successful treatment.
By following these three steps, you will help increase your chance of
detecting cancer early.
1. BREAST SELF-AWARENESS
Breast self-awareness can help you become familiar with how your
breasts normally look and feel. Knowing this will help you identify any
changes in your breasts that should be reported to your health care
professional promptly. If you find a lump, schedule an appointment with
your doctor, but don’t panic - 8 out of 10 lumps are not cancerous.
Changes to look for include:
• A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area
• A change in the size or shape of the breast
• Dimpling or puckering in the skin of the breast
• A nipple turned inward into the breast
• Discharge (fluid) from the nipple
• Scaly, red or swollen skin on the breast, nipple or areola (the dark area
of skin at the center of the breast)
You should see your health care provider about any of these symptoms.
Often these symptoms are not due to cancer, but if you notice any
changes in your body, tell your health care provider immediately so that
the problems can be diagnosed and treated.
2. WELL-WOMAN EXAM
It is recommended that women visit their family physician or gynecologist
each year for an annual Well-Woman Exam. In addition to a routine pelvic
exam and pap smear, the doctor may perform a brief breast exam to
check for abnormalities. The Well-Woman Exam is a great opportunity for
you to discuss with your health care provider any questions or concerns
you have regarding your breast health. For example, your doctor may
help you to determine the most appropriate frequency for your early
detection steps.
3. MAMMOGRAM
In its early stages, breast cancer doesn’t usually cause symptoms. NBCF
recommends that women ages 40 and older get a mammogram every
year. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It is a safe way to detect
cancerous tumors and other abnormal breast conditions and women
who have screening mammograms have a lower chance of dying from
breast cancer than women who do not have screening mammograms.
Mammograms can detect cancer or other problems before a lump
becomes large enough to be detectable to the touch. They provide an
effective way to find breast cancer in its early stages when treatment is
usually the most successful. Mammograms are considered safe, quick
and relatively painless.
Krenek Printing sends our thoughts and sympathies to everyone affected by Hurricane Harvey. As a resident of the communities
we serve, we are deeply saddened by the mass flooding and destruction brought to homes, businesses and property. We will
continue to provide personalized subdivision newsletters with information from neighborhood management, surrounding
community groups, and local relief information to support the cleaning, rebuilding, and recovery of the communities in the
wake of Hurricane Harvey. In the story below, a local resident shares what she believes makes our communities amazing…
people willing to help each other by showing one another generosity, community, kindness and humanity. Krenek Printing
agrees that YOU are what makes this city great and we are proud to be part of your local community each month.
Hurricane Harvey and Houstonians
On August 26th, as I ushered my students out of class with a cheerful “See you next week,” many remarked that school would
be closed due to flooding so they would not see me next week. I chuckled while advising them to stop wishing for the return
of summer vacation and not to forget their assignments due Monday. After 4 days of rain, flooding, and the constant reports
of more destruction on the news, I was feeling foolish at my lack of respect for the weather, guilty that my house was dry
when friends and family only miles down the road had lost everything, and generally disheartened at Houston’s situation.
The more I watched the news broadcast the devastation, viewed social media with awful stories of anger and hate, and
began to take inventory of what it would take to get my life back to normal, I felt bitter, annoyed and grumpy. Thankfully, an
eventful trip to the local pharmacy, helped me see a different view of the situation.
After 4 days of rain with a sick baby, I was out of baby fever reducer. With frazzled nerves, my fevered, fussy 1-year-old hanging
off my hip, and my 7-year-old complaining about the outing in general, a young man approached us and asked if I needed
help. It was clear he didn’t work for the store as he was not in uniform and didn’t have on a name tag, but he could see I was
having trouble locating what I needed on the bare shelves while juggling the kids, diaper bag, pacifier, etc. As he helped me
find the last bottle of off-brand infant pain reliever, I silently prayed my oldest daughter, who was quietly staring down the
young man with furrowed brow, would not ask any loud, inappropriate questions about his long hair, dark nail polish, or
pants that did not sit anywhere near his waist. As he helped me look for the medicine, we made small talk and he disclosed
that his family had been rescued a few hours before and he was thankful to be safely staying at a relative’s home until he
could get back to his house to assess the damage. This whole encounter took less than 3 minutes. I thanked him profusely
and we parted ways. As we drove home, my daughter began to ask her questions, and to my surprise, they had nothing to do
with the young man’s appearance. She wanted to know how he would get the water out of his house; how he would know
it was safe to go home and how he would get there; how he would get the money to buy more things if his stuff was ruined;
and so on. She was very concerned for this young man and his family. I told her about all the organizations that were already
providing for people like the man with things like shelter, food, clothes, and toiletries. When I looked back, my daughter was
crying. She said that she was so happy that everyone wanted to help each other and that she wanted to help too by going
through her clothes and toys when we got home. In that moment, all the negative feelings I was harboring disappeared. I was
reminded that doing things for others and being a decent neighbor is what makes Houston amazing.
I am thankful that young man helped me today. His helpful spirit, despite his desperate situation, helped remind me about
what is important – people. I know Houston has a long road to recovery ahead, but I also know that Houstonians will take on
the challenge with generosity, kindness, compassion and love.
IMPORTANT DATE
October 9 th - Professional Day - ES Parent Conferences
Message From The Superintendent
Welcome back to school - again! I realize we started 2017-2018 a couple weeks later than we originally planned and I appreciate everyone’s patience
during this difficult time.
Certainly, Hurricane Harvey has proven to be a dynamic and unprecedented event for the CFISD community. So many of our neighbors have been
displaced from their homes due to flooding and damage and we want to remember those folks in our thoughts and prayers and continue to provide
support as they get back on their feet.
You may have heard that Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath has waived the nine student days we have missed due to the flooding. I can
assure you that our teachers and staff are going to provide each student with the same outstanding curriculum and instruction they would have
received had we started on August 28 th .
The outpouring of support for so many of our friends and neighbors impacted by this tragic event has been inspiring to see. People from different
backgrounds and zip codes have all come together to support this community. That makes me extremely proud, not only to be a CFISD resident but
also an American.
Without a municipal government that covers the entire district, CFISD stepped up to provide temporary shelter, support other shelters and school
districts with food and supplies and help operate our own point of distribution at the Berry Center that provided assistance to more than 5,000
community members.
On a personal note, I want to thank you for your prayers, encouraging comments and emails during this difficult time. I have been a superintendent
for 27 years and this was the most challenging and dynamic event I have ever experienced in that role.
For most of us, this event will be in our rear-view mirror rather quickly. But for a significant group of people in our community, this was a life-changing
event. The theme we live by in CFISD is Opportunity for All. Let’s make sure all of our community, with our continued support, has the opportunity to
rebuild their lives this year.
Sincerely,
Mark Henry, Ed.D.
Students exit buses Sept. 11 th at Bridgeland High School on the first day of classes.
The Bridgeland High School student body fills up the competition gym Sept. 11 th on the first day
of classes. CFISD’s 12 th high school opens with freshman and sophomores and is one of three
new schools to open its door in the 2017-2018 school year.
Jim and Pam Wells (Center) join Wells Elementary School Principal Cheryl Fisher (teal shirt) in
greeting students and families Sept. 11 th on the first day of classes. Jim and Pam Wells served a
combined 66 years in CFISD and are the namesakes of the new school.
Christina Getschmann (left), a primary instructional coach at Hoover Elementary School,
talks with students Sept. 11 th on the first day of classes.
CFISD Welcomes An Expected 116,000 Students On First Day Of School
Cheryl Fisher’s Fitbit says she slept four hours, but the principal at brand-new Wells Elementary School was pretty sure it was less. The first day of
school still has that effect on Fisher. Despite a start date pushed back two weeks due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey, CFISD classes began September
11 th , with approximately 116,000 students filling the halls of 91 campuses. That included three new schools: Wells and Hoover Elementary schools and
Bridgeland High School. For those teachers, staff members and administrators, reaching the first day of classes marked an accomplishment in itself.
“Seeing those kids come in the first day of school with their smiles - that would be the pot of gold at the end of this whole thing,” said Fisher, who
spent eight years as the principal at Keith Elementary School before she was named to her new post - and subsequently spent much of the spring and
summer alone or with little staff in preparing. “There is a building, there is a complete staff of super-excited teachers and staff members and these
happy children came in and they deserve the best.”
Said Michael Smith, Bridgeland’s principal after more than nine years at the same job at Cy-Fair High School: “Whenever you have a new school, you
have to be flexible. Not everything went perfect, but the staff and the students were great. A lot of energy and a lot of excitement.”
The first day also meant bridging CFISD’s history with its future as the namesakes of both new elementary schools were on hand, welcoming students
in the morning before walking the halls and returning to volunteer as Bus Buddies in the afternoon. “I went around to every classroom this morning
and gave all the teachers a hug,” said Janet Hoover, the namesake for Hoover Elementary School who retired in 2010 after 36 years in CFISD. “It’s the
best atmosphere I’ve seen in a long, long time. It’s a very special place.”
CFISD’s original start date was August 28 th , but was postponed due to Hurricane Harvey. The district and community rallied and did its part while
employees, families and students waited to start the 2017-2018 school year. The Berry Center transformed into a massive point of distribution
center with a workforce of CFISD volunteers, funneling donations to families in need. In addition, numerous school organizations and athletics teams
volunteered in the relief effort.
But the waiting finally ended. School buses and lines of cars rolled September 11 th . Students posed for photos. Smiling employees greeted everyone
at the front doors. “I’m a little nervous but I’m very excited,” said Paige Hintz, a third-grade language arts teacher at Jowell Elementary School. “I’ve
prepared all of this stuff and finally just getting to actually do it. I’m ready to meet my kids and get it started.”
Moore ES Donation And Supply Update
Dear CFISD community: The outpouring of support you have shown
through volunteerism and donations to the students and staff at Moore
Elementary School has been absolutely incredible! You have worked
so hard to ensure they have everything they need to have a successful
school year. At this time, we are completely stocked with supplies and
do not need anything else. Once school begins, we will be reaching out
to others in need to share the extra supplies. Please know how much
your generosity has meant to the entire Moore community and all those
impacted by the flood. Sincerely, Principal Patricia Myers.
CFISD Mentor
The CFISD Mentor Program is a cooperative effort of volunteers from
businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the community
and the school district designed to encourage students (elementary
through high school) to finish school and focus on future education and
career goals. A mentor is a suitable role model committed to helping a
student with his/her academic and social development. Mentors meet
with students one-on-one for approximately 30 minutes each week.
Currently, over 700 mentors are matched with students. Mentors must
be 18 years or older. To become a mentor, you must attend a training
session, complete a global volunteer/mentor application and consent to
a criminal history record check.
Training Sessions - Registration is REQUIRED. Register for a training
session at www.cyfairisd.formstack.com/forms/training.
If you would like to schedule mentor training at your place of business,
please contact the Community Engagement department, Leslie Francis,
Boy Scouts
Boy Scouts of America -
Copperhead District
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
14
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which
help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam
Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout
Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old)
and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically
meet weekly.
Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools
including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley,
Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan,
Tipps, Walker and Wilson.
Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church,
Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church,
Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield
Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village
Free Memoir Writing Workshop
Cypress Historical Society at Cypress Top Historic Park running through
October and November from 10:30 AM to 12 PM. Everyone has a story
and everyone has memories. Some of them are good. Others are not so
good. But, all of them are valuable. This workshop is about preserving
your family history, one memory at a time. With the help of your teacher,
coach and mentor you will learn to jar those faded memories loose, then
compose, organize, preserve and share them electronically for future
generations. Jackie Devine loves working with active writers and people
who have never tried to write! This course will help you understand the
memoir writing process: story structure, scenes, dialogue, character
development, tone and voice. You’ll learn that you are creating a legacy.
If desired, stories will be recorded and saved online where family and
friends can enjoy them for years to come. Located behind Juergen’s Hall
Flooding Damages Cypress Creek
Cultural District
Creekfest Cancelled For 2017
Along with so many neighbors on Cypress Creek, the Cypress Creek Cultural
District sustained serious damage from Hurricane Harvey. As a result,
CreekFest has been canceled for 2017 but plans are to return in full force
next year. The Centrum and Cypress Creek Christian Church and Community
22
Center, the Barbara Bush Library, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts and
the Greenway trails experienced costly damages. All are working hard to
become operative as soon as possible and need the support of the Northwest
Community to aid the effort to do so. A sincere thank you goes to the major
sponsors of CreekFest who have now directed their sponsorships toward
flood relief for the Cultural District’s non-profit organizations. Those sponsors
include the Cypress Creek Cultural District, Resource One Credit Union, Fidelity
Investments and Power Home Remodeling Group. Insurance covers only a
portion of the costs to repair each of these organizations, so contributions
from the community are needed and deeply appreciated. Contributions may
be made by visiting https://paypal.me/cypresscreekcultural.
Please include a note indicating that your gift is for Harvey relief. All
donations will be distributed between non-profit organizations in the Cypress
Creek Cultural District, unless directed by the donor to a specific entity. One
hundred percent of your donations will go directly to the cultural district
organizations for flood relief. Cypress Creek FACE is working to relocate
concerts and educational services. The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts
hopes to re-open later this fall. The reopening of the Barbara Bush Harris
County Library is yet to be determined. The Cypress Creek Cultural District
is a community-driven, civic and cultural complex dedicated to meeting the
cultural, recreational and educational needs of all people in the Northwest
Houston Cypress Creek Community. For updates and information, please visit
www.CypressCreekCulturalDistrict.org.
Pearl Fincher Museum Of
Fine Arts Begins Recovery
After Hurricane Harvey
The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts took on some damages as a result
of Hurricane Harvey. Now the costly process of restoration has already
begun and insurance covers only part of these crucial expenses. The
museum urgently needs support from the community to help with this
financial challenge. A special fund to help “Restore the Pearl” has been
established so gifts can easily be made from anywhere. Donors can give
by texting pearlart to 243725 and choosing a donation amount or by
visiting http://bidpal.net/pearlart.
The Pearl will be closed while repairs are made and the hope is to reopen
as soon as possible this fall. Donations will enable the museum
to make vital repairs so the Pearl can continue to serve the community
with art and educational programming for all to enjoy. For help with
these unanticipated costs, the museum must rely on the generosity of
the community, which ten years ago turned the dream of the Pearl into a
reality in northwest Houston.
cats, dogs, hamsters, etc.) to receive a special blessing. We will gather in
front of the worship center building and following a brief liturgy, Dr. Dave
Meadows will bless each animal and their owner. If for some reason you
are unable to bring your pet (the pet isn’t people or animal friendly, is
easily frightened or not well), then simply bring a photo. Dogs should be
on leashes. Cats and other pets should be in appropriate carriers. Please
make sure your dog or cat has on a collar with a current ID.
Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing
Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages living in and
around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that we utilize
animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits as an integral
part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a non-profit organization,
we are constantly looking for extra help around the farm. Therefore, Special
CHEERS would like to welcome all high school and college-aged students
interested in working with both children and animals to volunteer after school,
on the weekends or seasonally (i.e., summer camp). Please call our director,
Ms. Fritzi, at 713-983-0075, for more information. A background check will be
required of all individuals applying for a volunteer position at our facility.
For Adult Living (Pal)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure
out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole
month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program
to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL).
The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by
the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at
Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by
local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that
help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@
ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.
Volunteers Needed For Dream
Dachshund Rescue
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned
Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can
no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with
local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care
and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened,
forever homes. DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to
provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need,
currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues
to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There
is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft
place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally.
Questions? Please send us an email to: Contact-Us@DreamDachs.org
and a volunteer will respond to you right away with all the information
you need! Ready to Foster? Please visit our website at: www.dreamdachs.
org and click on the FOSTER tab to fill out our online Foster Application.
Start The New Year With A New
Best Friend And Family Member!
Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and cats
hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small to
large dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from. We are
a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to commit to
adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need foster families.
Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep, foster families
socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include the animal in
your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as individuals so
you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes. Treat the animal
like your own and train him/her, if possible. Although you may feel sadness
when your foster animal is adopted, please know that your efforts helped
to prepare the cat or dog for his/her forever home. Visit Loving Arms Pet
Placement website at www.lovingarmspetplacement.com or visit us at
Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529 each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.
