Copperfield Place Village
(CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD
We are fortunate here at Copperfield Place Village to have survived flooding
in our neighborhood during the Harvey hurricane. As you know, there
were so many people and neighbors in nearby communities who were
not as fortunate as we were and were displaced from their homes! Yet,
many of our neighboring churches, community centers, local businesses
and most of all our own community who assisted and volunteered in
every way possible to help our neighbors! We at Copperfield are thankful,
blessed and honored to be in a community that cares. Thank you for all
you did to be a part of this!
Special thanks to Copperfield Church and Calvary Church who opened
their Church for the many displaced people who needed shelter during
and after the storm. The donations, volunteering and all prayers were
amazing.
DEED RESTRICTIONS VIOLATIONS
IMPORTANT!!!! DO NOT PARK YOUR VEHICLE
STREET? The Harris County Sheriff’s Department
is monitoring this illegal violation throughout
the neighborhood! Illegal parking in the streets
will be ticketed. For more information enroll in
Copperfieldbuzzclub.Nextdoor.com. Sgt. Adam
Lightfoot puts out important information on
various laws and issues.
MILDEW: Mildew on the sides of homes have been
cited, as well as painting needed on some homes.
We would like to think you care and are proud
about your neighborhood. Get a copy of the deed
restrictions if you do not have one by going into
the Copperfield website, www.copperfield.org
and tag on Copperfield Place Village.
Ironically, this was the quote chosen for last October and because it is so
STAY IN TOUCH WITH WHAT’S GOING ON!
During the hurricane and for days afterward, residents of Northmead
and others all over Copperfield were sharing important, urgent and local
information. It was an important and useful tool to stay in touch with each
other and even to offer and ask for help. If you are not yet a member, you
can register at www.nextdoor.com and it only takes a few seconds to get
up to date and in the know.
(NM) LOST PETS!
This scary storm displaced many pets. Let’s try our best to help our furry
friends find their way back to their families. If you see or find a pet that is
lost, snap a picture and put it on Nextdoor Neighborhood! You can also post
on the Best Friends website, https://bestfriends.org/hurricaneharvey/
lost-and-found-pets. We see beloved pets returned to their families every
week on the message boards. The family that is missing their precious pet
will be grateful.
OPPORTUNITY FOR VOLUNTEER HOURS?
This Will Help Fulfill Your Service Hours
We are in need of volunteers to keep our marquees updated with
information. This would entail changing the letters on both sides of the
marquees located in our parks. If you are in need for volunteer service
hours, this is an easy way to fill your requirements. If interested, please
contact Dennis Zehler at Dennis.Southcreek@gmail.com.
(SC) REPORTING ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
There are two ways to report suspicious activity. You can use the iWatch
Harris County App. You can also call the Sheriff’s Department nonemergency
number, 713-221-6000.
iWATCH HARRIS COUNTY is a smart phone app designed to work
with Android and iPhones. It allows citizens to report any persons
or activities. Any tips can remain anonymous or citizens have the
option to disclose their identity. Additional information is available at
iwatchharriscounty.com.
(SC) PARKS CLOSE AT SUNSET EACH DAY
The Parks in our neighborhood close at dark. The Sheriff Department has
requested that anyone who sees activity in one of our parks after dark,
should report the activity to the Sheriff’s Department. Please call 713-221-
6000 and once the recording starts, press “1.” Inform “dispatch” that you
are reporting a suspicious person or suspicious activity in the Southcreek
Village Park. You may request that the officer stop by your residence after
the incident has been checked out, by letting the dispatch officer know
this when you report the incident.
(SC) STREETLIGHTS OUT?
Please report outages of streetlights to Centerpoint Energy. Get the pole
number, as well as the nearest Street address and call 713-207-2222.
(SC) TRASH & RECYCLING PICKUP
Southcreek trash pickup is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Southcreek has
backdoor pickup. This means that our trashcans may be placed at the
back of our driveway. We do not have to have our trashcans at the curb.
Big items such as yard clippings and tree branches should be placed at
the curb.
Our deed restrictions state that all trash, including grass clippings, cannot
be on the curb until 6 PM the night before pickup and your trashcans must
be picked up from the curb by 6
PM, the day of pickup. So… you
cannot have trash on the curb
until Monday and Thursday
nights until 6 PM and everything
must be removed from the
curb by 6 PM on Tuesdays and
Fridays. This includes any bags
that contain lawn clippings. If
you have a lawn service, have
them place the bags behind
your fence and not leave the
clippings on the curb.
Our recycling day is Tuesday.
Please have your recycling bin at
the curb by 7 AM on Tuesdays.
Please pick up your recycling
by 6 PM on Tuesdays to comply
with our deed restrictions.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT KUDOS
Many thanks to our wonderful neighbors who volunteered to host a
Tuesday, October 3 rd . Also, a big thank you to the nine neighbors who gave
up their time to participate and to sponsor a ‘know your neighbor event.’
At many of the gatherings, Sheriff’s Deputies stopped by and visited with
the various groups for the purpose of strengthening community bonds
and for discussing various crime prevention tips. HEB, Target and the
HALLOWEEN SAFETY:
This month children will be out celebrating Halloween by trick-or-treating.
When driving please be on the lookout for children who may be crossing
the street. Please talk to your children about these safety issues - look
both ways before crossing the street; go as a group with a trusted adult
and never alone; walk don’t run from house to house; never enter homes
of strangers; wear a reflective costume or add reflective strips; use a
flashlight to help you see and to help others see you.
COURTESY ISSUE:
As children are walking and riding their bikes to and from school, please
make sure your sprinkler system is turned off during these times. Many
(WC) YARD OF THE MONTH
Due to Hurricane Harvey, the Yard of the Month
program for Westcreek has been completed early
this year - there were no September selections
chosen. The program will resume in 2018.
Thanks to everyone that worked hard this year
to get their gardens, yards and homes looking
great.
(WC) HURRICANE HARVEY
Many homes in our community experienced
excessive rain as we experienced the most
devastating rain event in American history come
our way due to Hurricane Harvey. A small tornado
just missed hitting the far northwest corner of
Westcreek, but still knocked down fences near
Copeland Elementary and even caused cracked
sidewalks where tree roots caused lifting and
splitting to occur. There was minor tree damage
experienced by many homeowners, but most
of us, as well as most of Copperfield, were VERY
fortunate to escape major damage experienced
by others throughout other areas of Houston and
beyond. Re-planting our gardens or adding back
mulch that was washed away is a small price
to pay compared to those whose homes were
flooded and uninhabitable. Please remember,
if you still have clean-up or recovery pruning
needing to be completed, please be sure you
pay close attention to your personal safety when
climbing ladders or using tools such as limb
saws or chainsaws. Always wear eye protection
whenever using a power tool or cutting limbs/
vegetation. Finally, if you know someone or if
you yourself provided help to those who were
in need during the storm, thank you for your
kindness, efforts and generosity.
homeowners use. Additionally, as the weather begins
to cool, mow your turf shorter to prevent moisture
build-up, adjust your irrigation cycle to fewer days or
shorter cycle times and avoid watering at night. Fungus
loves moisture.
Chinch Bugs can be very devastating to St. Augustine
or Fescue lawns. Their damage can appear similar to
brown patch at first but grows out beyond circles or
rings. Chinch bugs are the larvae of Blissus leucopterus,
a small winged beetle. To check for the presence of
chinch bugs;
Take a coffee can or similar container and remove the
top and bottom of the can, creating a hollow cylinder.
Then embed the can in an affected area and fill with
water. If chinch bugs are present they will rise to the
top of the water within the can.
(WC) CHINCH BUGS OR BROWN PATCH?
As the weather starts to cool, brown patch inevitably
starts to show its ugly face in the form of yellow circles
on our lawns. Many homeowners have a hard time
telling whether they have brown patch or if there is
some sort of insect feasting on their lawn areas. To
clarify:
Brownpatch is a fungus and usually appears in the
same areas repeatedly, thriving when temperatures
drop overnight below 70 degrees for several nights,
even if previous outbreaks were thought to have been
resolved. A yellow/grey circle up to 20” in diameter
will appear and then slowly close in on the inner turf,
changing the color of the grass as it moves inward.
Scott’s Lawn Fungus Control is very effective in
controlling an outbreak of Brownpatch. Products
containing Chlorothanol work well - try Daconil
Docket DF, it is a granular product and very effective.
Ortho Daconil is a faster-acting liquid product many
Prevent damage such as this from occurring! The most effective pesticide
to apply is a liquid spray containing permethrin, cypermethrin or
deltamethrin. This must be applied 3 separate times within a 21 day period
- the egg cycle the chinch bugs leave behind must be killed, otherwise
they will return. A liquid product will permeate all areas better and more
effectively than a granular product, ensuring the infestation is defeated.
If a granular treatment is utilized as well as a liquid application, “Triazicide”
works very well if applied according to labeled directions.
(WC) WASTE COLLECTION REMINDER
This is a reminder to PLEASE DO NOT place your lawn clippings, pruning/
branches/bagged leaves or other landscape waste at the curb earlier than
6 PM the night before garbage collection occurs, Monday night for the
Tuesday collection and Thursday night for the Friday collection. If your
lawn care is performed by a contracted mower or service group, please
know you MUST place the waste/clippings out of view once the service is
performed if they are leaving the waste within sight upon completion. THE
BAGS SHOULD NOT REMAIN AT THE CURB UNTIL COLLECTION DAY! Please
help to keep our neighborhood looking beautiful at all times and prevent
receiving a reminder from the HOA . Summer heat is almost behind us!
(WC) WESTCREEK COMMUNITY GARDEN
MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Welcome back to school - again! I realize we are starting 2017-2018
a couple weeks later than we originally planned and I appreciate
everyone’s patience during this difficult time.
Certainly, Hurricane Harvey has proven to be a dynamic and
unprecedented event for the CFISD community. So many of our
neighbors have been displaced from their homes due to flooding
and damage and we want to remember those folks in our thoughts
and prayers and continue to provide support as they get back on
their feet.
You may have heard that Texas Commissioner of Education Mike
Morath has waived the nine student days we have missed due to
the flooding. I can assure you that our teachers and staff are going
to provide each student with the same outstanding curriculum and
instruction they would have received had we started on August 28 th .
The outpouring of support for so many of our friends and neighbors impacted by this tragic event has been inspiring to see. People from different
backgrounds and zip codes have all come together to support this community. That makes me extremely proud, not only to be a CFISD resident but also
an American.
Without a municipal government that covers the entire district, CFISD stepped up to provide temporary shelter, support other shelters and school
districts with food and supplies and help operate our own point of distribution at the Berry Center that provided assistance to more than 5,000
community members.
On a personal note, I want to thank you for your prayers, encouraging comments and emails during this difficult time. I have been a superintendent for
27 years and this was the most challenging and dynamic event I have ever experienced in that role.
For most of us, this event will be in our rear-view mirror rather quickly. But for a significant group of people in our community, this was a life-changing
event. The theme we live by in CFISD is Opportunity for All. Let’s make sure all of our community, with our continued support, has the opportunity to
rebuild their lives this year.
Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D.
CFISD WELCOMES AN EXPECTED
116,000 STUDENTS ON FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
Cheryl Fisher’s Fitbit says she slept four hours, but the principal at brandnew
Wells Elementary School was pretty sure it was less. The first day
of school still has that effect on Fisher. Despite a start date pushed back
two weeks due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey, CFISD classes began
September 11 th , with approximately 116,000 students filling the halls
of 91 campuses. That included three new schools: Wells and Hoover
Elementary schools and Bridgeland High School. For those teachers, staff
members and administrators, reaching the first day of classes marked
an accomplishment in itself. “Seeing those kids come in the first day
of school with their smiles - that would be the pot of gold at the end of
this whole thing,” said Fisher, who spent eight years as the principal at
Keith Elementary School before she was named to her new post - and
subsequently spent much of the spring and summer alone or with little
staff in preparing. “There is a building, there is a complete staff of superexcited
teachers and staff members and these happy children came in and
they deserve the best.”
Said Michael Smith, Bridgeland’s principal after more than nine years at
the same job at Cy-Fair High School: “Whenever you have a new school,
you have to be flexible. Not everything went perfect, but the staff and the
students were great. A lot of energy and a lot of excitement.”
The first day also meant bridging CFISD’s history with its future as the
namesakes of both new elementary schools were on hand, welcoming
students in the morning before walking the halls and returning to
volunteer as Bus Buddies in the afternoon. “I went around to every
classroom this morning and gave all the teachers a hug,” said Janet
Hoover, the namesake for Hoover Elementary School who retired in 2010
after 36 years in CFISD. “It’s the best atmosphere I’ve seen in a long, long
time. It’s a very special place.”
CFISD’s original start date was August 28 th , but was postponed due to
Hurricane Harvey. The district and community rallied and did its part while
employees, families and students waited to start the 2017-2018 school
year. The Berry Center transformed into a massive point of distribution
center with a workforce of CFISD volunteers, funneling donations to
families in need. In addition, numerous school organizations and athletics
teams volunteered in the relief effort.
But the waiting finally ended. School buses and lines of cars rolled
September 11 th . Students posed for photos. Smiling employees greeted
everyone at the front doors. “I’m a little nervous but I’m very excited,”
said Paige Hintz, a third-grade language arts teacher at Jowell Elementary
School. “I’ve prepared all of this stuff and finally just getting to actually do
it. I’m ready to meet my kids and get it started.”
MOORE ES DONATION AND SUPPLY UPDATE
Dear CFISD community:
The outpouring of support you have shown through volunteerism and
donations to the students and staff at Moore Elementary School has
been absolutely incredible! You have worked so hard to ensure they
have everything they need to have a successful school year. At this time,
we are completely stocked with supplies and do not need anything else.
Once school begins, we will be reaching out to others in need to share the
extra supplies. Please know how much your generosity has meant to the
entire Moore community and all those impacted by the flood. Sincerely,
Principal Patricia Myers.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
October 2017 | Copperfield Community Newsletter
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help
our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area
Krenek Printing sends our thoughts and sympathies to everyone affected by Hurricane Harvey. As a resident of the communities
we serve, we are deeply saddened by the mass flooding and destruction brought to homes, businesses and property. We will
continue to provide personalized subdivision newsletters with information from neighborhood management, surrounding
community groups, and local relief information to support the cleaning, rebuilding, and recovery of the communities in the
wake of Hurricane Harvey. In the story below, a local resident shares what she believes makes our communities amazing…
people willing to help each other by showing one another generosity, community, kindness and humanity. Krenek Printing
agrees that YOU are what makes this city great and we are proud to be part of your local community each month.
Hurricane Harvey and Houstonians
On August 26th, as I ushered my students out of class with a cheerful “See you next week,” many remarked that school would
be closed due to flooding so they would not see me next week. I chuckled while advising them to stop wishing for the return
of summer vacation and not to forget their assignments due Monday. After 4 days of rain, flooding, and the constant reports of
more destruction on the news, I was feeling foolish at my lack of respect for the weather, guilty that my house was dry when
friends and family only miles down the road had lost everything, and generally disheartened at Houston’s situation. The more
I watched the news broadcast the devastation, viewed social media with awful stories of anger and hate, and began to take
inventory of what it would take to get my life back to normal, I felt bitter, annoyed and grumpy. Thankfully, an eventful trip to
the local pharmacy, helped me see a different view of the situation.
After 4 days of rain with a sick baby, I was out of baby fever reducer. With frazzled nerves, my fevered, fussy 1-year-old hanging
off my hip, and my 7-year-old complaining about the outing in general, a young man approached us and asked if I needed
help. It was clear he didn’t work for the store as he was not in uniform and didn’t have on a name tag, but he could see I was
having trouble locating what I needed on the bare shelves while juggling the kids, diaper bag, pacifier, etc. As he helped me
find the last bottle of off-brand infant pain reliever, I silently prayed my oldest daughter, who was quietly staring down the
young man with furrowed brow, would not ask any loud, inappropriate questions about his long hair, dark nail polish, or
pants that did not sit anywhere near his waist. As he helped me look for the medicine, we made small talk and he disclosed
that his family had been rescued a few hours before and he was thankful to be safely staying at a relative’s home until he
could get back to his house to assess the damage. This whole encounter took less than 3 minutes. I thanked him profusely
and we parted ways. As we drove home, my daughter began to ask her questions, and to my surprise, they had nothing to do
with the young man’s appearance. She wanted to know how he would get the water out of his house; how he would know
it was safe to go home and how he would get there; how he would get the money to buy more things if his stuff was ruined;
and so on. She was very concerned for this young man and his family. I told her about all the organizations that were already
providing for people like the man with things like shelter, food, clothes, and toiletries. When I looked back, my daughter was
crying. She said that she was so happy that everyone wanted to help each other and that she wanted to help too by going
through her clothes and toys when we got home. In that moment, all the negative feelings I was harboring disappeared. I was
reminded that doing things for others and being a decent neighbor is what makes Houston amazing.
I am thankful that young man helped me today. His helpful spirit, despite his desperate situation, helped remind me about
what is important – people. I know Houston has a long road to recovery ahead, but I also know that Houstonians will take on
the challenge with generosity, kindness, compassion and love.
FALL PET FOOD DRIVE
Cornerstone United Methodist Church is sponsoring a “fall pet food drive”
from October 1 st through November 1 st for “Provisions Through Christ,”
a pet food pantry. “Provisions for Christ” helps families who are on a fixed
income with pet food expenses so that they can keep their pets in lieu of
having to give them up because of finances. Dry and canned pet food for
dogs and cats can be dropped off by the church office during the week
and/or a basket has been set up in the lobby of the worship center for
collection on Sunday mornings. Please visit their website www.ptchrist.
org for more information about “Provisions for Christ” ministry.
BLESSING OF THE PETS
front of the worship center building and following a brief liturgy, Dr. Dave
Meadows will bless each animal and their owner. If for some reason you
are unable to bring your pet (the pet isn’t people or animal friendly, is
easily frightened or not well), then simply bring a photo. Dogs should be
on leashes. Cats and other pets should be in appropriate carriers. Please
make sure your dog or cat has on a collar with a current ID.
FLOODING DAMAGES CYPRESS CREEK CULTURAL
DISTRICT CREEKFEST CANCELED FOR 2017
Along with so many neighbors on Cypress Creek, the Cypress Creek
Cultural District sustained serious damage from Hurricane Harvey. As a
result, CreekFest has been canceled for 2017 but plans are to return in
full force next year. The Centrum and Cypress Creek Christian Church and
Community Center, the Barbara Bush Library, the Pearl Fincher Museum
of Fine Arts and the Greenway trails experienced costly damages. All are
working hard to become operative as soon as possible and need the
support of the Northwest Community to aid the effort to do so.
A sincere thank you goes to the major sponsors of CreekFest who have
now directed their sponsorships toward flood relief for the Cultural
District’s non-profit organizations. Those sponsors include the Cypress
Creek Cultural District, Resource One Credit Union, Fidelity Investments
and Power Home Remodeling Group.
Insurance covers only a portion of the costs to repair each of these
organizations, so contributions from the community are needed and
deeply appreciated. Contributions may be made by visiting https://
paypal.me/cypresscreekcultural. Please include a note indicating that
your gift is for Harvey relief. All donations will be distributed between nonprofit
organizations in the Cypress Creek Cultural District, unless directed
by the donor to a specific entity. One hundred percent of your donations
will go directly to the cultural district organizations for flood relief.
Cypress Creek FACE is working to relocate concerts and educational
services. The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts hopes to re-open later this
fall. The reopening of the Barbara Bush Harris County Library is yet to be
determined.
The Cypress Creek Cultural District is a community-driven, civic and
cultural complex dedicated to meeting the cultural, recreational and
educational needs of all people in the Northwest Houston Cypress
Creek Community. For updates and information, please visit www.
CypressCreekCulturalDistrict.org.
PEARL FINCHER MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
BEGINS RECOVERY AFTER HURRICANE HARVEY
The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts took on some damages as a result
of Hurricane Harvey. Now the costly process of restoration has already
begun and insurance covers only part of these crucial expenses. The
museum urgently needs support from the community to help with this
financial challenge. A special fund to help “Restore the Pearl” has been
established so gifts can easily be made from anywhere. Donors can give by
texting pearlart to 243725 and choosing a donation amount or by visiting
http://bidpal.net/pearlart. The Pearl will be closed while repairs are
made and the hope is to re-open as soon as possible this fall. Donations
will enable the museum to make vital repairs so the Pearl can continue
to serve the community with art and educational programming for all to
enjoy. For help with these unanticipated costs, the museum must rely on
the generosity of the community, which ten years ago turned the dream of
the Pearl into a reality in northwest Houston.
FOSTER CHILDREN:
PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.
Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives
with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see
AND FAMILY MEMBER!
Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and cats
hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small to
large dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from.
We are a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to
commit to adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need
foster families. Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep,
foster families socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include
the animal in your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as
individuals so you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes.
Treat the animal like your own and train him/her, if possible.
Although you may feel sadness when your foster animal is adopted, please
know that your efforts helped to prepare the cat or dog for his/her forever
home.
How to Carve
A Pumpkin
When it comes to pumpkin carving, the idea is to have fun. We’ve
got tips on carving the best pumpkin, as well as how to pick a good
pumpkin for carving!
HOW TO PICK A GOOD PUMPKIN FOR CARVING
Look for one that is a little misshapen. Inspect it for soft spots (especially
the end opposite the stem). Reject a pumpkin that has soft spots, they
will cause it to deteriorate quickly. Remember, your pumpkin doesn’t
have to sit on its base, in fact, that’s often its weakest spot.
Let the pumpkin guide the shape of the face: An elongated pumpkin
should have an elongated face. A fat and happy pumpkin should have
a fat and happy face.
HOLLOW OR WHOLE?
There are two reasons for hollowing: (1) If the inside is going to be
exposed (through the mouth, etc.), it looks better if it is hollowed
neatly. (2) If you plan to light the pumpkin from the inside, it must be
hollow. You can hollow it out from a hole in the back instead of the top,
so that the look of the face isn’t affected. If you’re illuminating with a
candle, you need to hollow from the top to allow the heat and smoke
to escape.
THE TOOLS
Use a water-based marker to outline the face that you want to carve.
First, draw a line down the center to establish symmetry. Then sketch
the nose, the approximate center of the face. Once you’re satisfied with
the details, trace over the lines using a permanent marker. For carving,
basic kitchen implements, such as a paring knife or a steak knife with
a standard - not serrated - blade that’s not going to bend, work well.
You can also use a standard jigsaw blade. Otherwise, improvise: Use a
melon-ball cutter to make circles, for example.
MAKE A FACE
To achieve a three-dimensional appearance, carve the entire pumpkin.
Exaggerate the features. (If you aren’t sure what teeth really look like or
how the gum line works, smile and look in the mirror.) If the pumpkin is
frowning, carve wrinkles under the mouth. To add character, carve a lot
of “crow’s feet” lines around the eyes. Consider using the stem as the
nose and inserts such as radishes for the eyes or cut eyeballs from the
back of the pumpkin and hold them in place with toothpicks.
CARVE WITH CARE
Use two hands at all times: one to control the blade and the other to
control the pressure with which you cut (and thus the depth). Take care
not to jab the blade into the pumpkin; you don’t want to cut all the
way through the rind - except to determine its depth. The thickness of
the rind will vary, not only from pumpkin to pumpkin, but also within
one pumpkin. To determine your pumpkin’s average depth, cut a core
sample where you want an eye or a nostril to be. Keep that piece nearby
as a reminder of how deep you can safely cut.
ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTS
Pumpkins, which are actually a fruit, not a vegetable, are 90 percent
water, so after carving they usually last only three days to a week. A
jack-o’-lantern with a surface carving will last longer than one that
is cut all the way through. Putting a candle or other light inside will
shorten its life span, as the heat that results can “cook” the pumpkin
and reduce its longevity to a matter of hours. For a bright, shiny finish,
spray Armor All on the pumpkin and rub it in. Paint will not preserve a
pumpkin. However, if you decide to paint your pumpkin for decoration,
use a water-based latex paint and wait at least an hour after carving so
that the cuts you have made in the pumpkin have a chance to dry.
Halloween
Jalapeno
Mummies
10 Jalapeno Peppers
8 oz Softened Cream Cheese
8 oz Pepper Jack Cheese
1/2 tsp Minced Garlic
Pinch Salt
Pinch Pepper
1 Scallion
Candied Eyeballs
Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
WITCH HAT CUPCAKES
CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 large egg
3/4 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
VANILLA BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
1 cup unsalted butter softened
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 3/4 cup powdered sugar
1 tbsp heavy whipping cream
food coloring green and orange
HAT DECORATIONS
Oreo Thins 1 per cupcake
Hershey Kisses 1 per cupcake
Candy Corn cut along color lines
For the Chocolate Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a muffin tin
with cupcake liners, then set aside. In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking
powder, salt, and cocoa. Set aside. Using a stand mixer (or hand mixer + large
bowl), beat together vegetable oil and egg on low for 30 seconds. Add milk
and vanilla extract and mix until combined, about 1 minute. Keeping speed
on low, slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, about 1/2 cup
at a time. Once all dry ingredients have been added, mix just until the dry
ingredients are no longer visible, about another 2-3 minutes. Be careful not
to overmix. Pour batter into prepared muffin tin, filling containers about 1/2
way full. Bake chocolate cupcakes in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until a
tester toothpick comes out clean. Let cupcakes cool in the tin for 5 minutes,
then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Preheat your over to 400° in line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Wash then Slice your jalapeño peppers in half lengthwise and scoop
out the inside. In a large mixing bowl, use a cheese grater to shred your
block of pepper jack cheese. Chop a scallion in tiny pieces. Mix in your
cream cheese, scallion pieces, garlic, pepper and salt to your shredded
cheese. Fill your jalapeño peppers with your cheese mixture. Now
unroll your crescent rolls into rectangles (leave two triangles together
and pinch the middle together). Use a pizza cutter to cut each crescent
rectangle lengthwise into four even pieces. Wrap one or two pieces
around each pepper, leaving a small opening for the eyes. Bake for 10-
12 minutes. Right when you take your mummies out of the oven, add
two candy eyes in each top opening.
Witch Hat
Cupcakes
For the Vanilla Buttercream Frosting:
Using a stand mixer (or hand mixer + large bowl), beat butter and vanilla
extract on high until fluffy. Drop speed to medium and slowly add sugar to
butter, mixing thoroughly in between. If mixture gets too dry, add the 1 tbsp
heavy whipping cream. If using food coloring, separate about 1/3 to 1/2 cup
frosting to a separate bowl. Add green food coloring to the larger portion of
frosting and orange food coloring to the smaller portion and mix thoroughly.
Putting it all together:
Decorate chocolate cupcakes with the green frosting (to create the “hair”
for the witch) using a decorating tip of your choice. Press an Oreo on to
the top of the green frosting (to create the brim of the hat). Using another
piping bag, add about 1/2 tablespoon of orange frosting on top of the
Oreo. Press an unwrapped Hershey Kiss into the frosting, using even
pressure so that a ring of orange frosting appears around the base of the
Kiss (this creates the top of the hat). Place a piece of cut candy corn into
the orange frosting (for the hat buckle). I used only yellow pieces for this.
