Ask Mary Ann: Parenting
your parent with Alzheimer’s
Question: Gradually,
I’m becoming a parent
for my parent. Is it normal
to feel anxious and
overwhelmed?
Mary Ann: Yes, it’s
very normal to be anxious,
feel guilty and feel overwhelmed.
I, myself, have
experienced all of these
emotions, having cared for
my mother, who had dementia
for many years. Often,
when finding ourselves
in the role of caregiver for
a parent, we try to suppress
our negative emotions, feeling
guilty for even having
them. Even if you have a
great relationship with your
mom or dad, there may still
be some unresolved issues
between you. So, feelings
of guilt are very normal, as
well. In your new role, you
will have many feelings
that you will work through,
one at a time.
I found it helpful to seek
support, educate myself
and share my feelings with
others in the same situation.
Doing so helped me
to process and better understand
my emotions,
which, in turn, helped me
learn to accept and cope
with them.
This is a journey that will
evolve and change day to
day as the disease progresses.
You are joining your
parent on this journey, and
the more you understand
it the easier it will be, not
only for yourself but for
your loved one, as well.
Please know that I am
available as a resource for
you personally and professionally,
future.
Chestnut Square: A beautiful community with new friends waiting
Since opening in 2003,
Chestnut Square at The
Glen has been one of the
North Shore’s most popular
choices for independent
senior living. The reasons
are many, but to fully understand
what makes the
community so special, we
think our residents, families
and staff give the best
perspective of all.
“Moving to Chestnut
Square was one of the best
decisions my wife and I
ever made ... our only regret
is that we didn’t do
this sooner,” Don Klein
said. “There’s always
something new and exciting
happening and we’ve
never met a nicer group of
people. When my brother
saw how happy we were,
he decided to make Chestnut
Square his new home
also.”
“I wanted to find a place
where I felt an instant connection
with the residents
and the staff, and Chestnut
Square gave me a warm
feeling the moment I
walked through the door,”
Dee Knapik said. “I especially
love all the events.
... I’ve done more in eight
months than I have in the
past eight years.”
“I’ve worked at Chestnut
Square for over 10
years and the residents
have become a special
part of my family,” Maria
Latacz said. “Everybody is
so nice. It’s why I love my
job.”
“The residents are so
welcoming. ... They want
you to feel part of their
community from day
one,” Beth Huber said.
“There are so many activities
and excursions to
choose from. Units are
well maintained. There is
formal dining every night
and brunch on Sundays.
My mom is safe, happy
and close to her family
now. I have Chestnut and
the wonderful staff there to
thank for that.”
Located at 2601 Chestnut
Ave., Glenview, Chestnut
Square at The Glen features
spacious floor plans,
all-inclusive services and
amenities, a signature
dining program, diverse
cultural and recreational
events, scheduled transportation,
weekly housekeeping,
and 24/7 concierge
services. Homecare
and home-health services
are also available on-site if
needed.
We are also excited to
announce, for a limited
time, attractive incentives
on our 100-percent refundable
entrance fees. One
and two-bedroom apartments
are currently available,
a better time to lock in
Tiny horses bring inspiration and love to Luther Village
Luther Village knows the value of animals
in keeping people, especially older
adults, connected and engaged in life.
In addition to the animals that live with
residents in pet-friendly homes, Luther
Village brings a range of animals to the
55-acre campus just north of downtown
Arlington Heights.
One Saturday this August, Mane in
Heaven volunteers brought CinderBella,
a registered miniature therapy horse, to
visit Luther Village residents. More than
80 residents and their grandchildren had
the opportunity to pet the adorable, little,
sneaker-wearing horse.
Mane in Heaven’s all-volunteer staff
brings the Barrington-based nonprofit
organization’s seven therapy horses to a
wide range of different facilities throughout
the Chicago area.
These specially trained therapy animals
provide comfort and joy wherever they
go. Miniature therapy horses make phenomenal
comfort animals and are very
kind and gentle. These visits promote the
human-animal bond and awaken emotional
and spiritual connections between
the horses and those they visit. Cinder-
Bella, who passed her Pet Partners testing
in September 2015, is tall and loves
to give kisses. The curious, solid black,
3-year-old horse is 100 percent Falabella,
a specific breed of miniature horse bred in
the 1800s in Argentina.
In addition to activities like these special
therapy visits, Luther Village’s independent
older adults can find more
traditional entertainment on campus and
can take advantage of the rich cultural offerings
in the area with turnkey trips to a
variety of activities, sports events and arts
performances. The community is abuzz
with activity from fellow friendly Luther
Village residents, who are happy to share
knowledge and skills in a wide variety
of activities and clubs, joining a broad
range of outside speakers and performers
brought in from across the region.
Visitors to the 55-acre campus are
drawn in by the range of opportunities, including
the diverse types of homes. Residences
range from apartment-style homes
with balconies and heated underground
parking to two-story houses with porches,
basements and garages.
The community provides active seniors
with services and amenities that increase,
rather than limit, their freedom. Personal
services — such as laundry, housekeeping
and dining — are optional. On the other
hand, features that offer security, convenience
and social activity — including everything
from snow removal to the fitness
club and pool, and from fine arts classes
to musical performances — are standard
for everyone.
The landscaped, beautiful campus includes
ponds, a fishing pier, walking
paths, gardens and the Summer House
recreational building. At its center is Wittenberg
Commons, with its two restaurants,
library, billiards room, bank, pharmacy,
salon and a wellness center staffed
by registered nurses. The Lutheran Home,
a renowned senior care facility, is located
just next door.
“While Luther Village is an independent
living community, most of our homeowners
consider ready access to health care an
invaluable benefit,” said Peggy McGrath,
sales manager at Luther Village.
Luther Village residents own their
homes through cooperative ownership
and enjoy all the financial advantages that
go along with owning shares in a co-op.
A low monthly fee covers all the basics
and then some. And couples save, because
there is no second-person fee. Residents
also enjoy the benefits of a maintenancefree
lifestyle, with exterior painting, lawn
mowing and snow shoveling a thing of
the past.
NorthShore Orthopaedic Institute getting
patients back to healthy, pain-free living
For everyone from
professional athletes to
weekend warriors, serious
runners to busy people
running errands, joint
pain can get in the way.
NorthShore Orthopaedic
Institute is using the latest
treatment techniques and
comprehensive coordinated
care to help patients
reclaim their lives.
NorthShore provides a
full spectrum of services
for every orthopaedic challenge.
Its integrated team
brings shared expertise in
a wide range of specialties,
including back and spine,
sports medicine, hand and
upper extremity, foot and
ankle, podiatry, ediatrics,
trauma, and arthritis care
and joint replacement.
NorthShore’s sports
medicine expertise is particularly
robust. North-
Shore University Health-
System is the official
healthcare partner of the
Chicago Blackhawks. Its
physicians also treat the
Chicago Bears and are on
the field at every Bears
game. Those same orthopaedic
specialists treat
NorthShore patients.
From the latest nonsurgical
and minimally invasive
treatments to computer-
and robot-assisted
surgery, NorthShore explores
every option for
each patient. The team
works with patients to precisely
diagnose the source
of pain and provide the
optimal treatment plan for
long-term recovery.
“We’re pioneering advanced
techniques at
NorthShore,” said Dr.
Jason Koh, chairman of
the Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery and an internationally
recognized
sports medicine expert in
knee, shoulder and elbow
reconstruction. “One exciting
thing we’re doing right
now is regenerating patients’
own cartilage to repair
their damaged knees.”
Specialists are also using
3-D printing to create
precise anatomical models
that perfectly replicate a
patient’s unique anatomy.
This enables surgeons to
plan complex surgeries
more precisely.
Joint replacement is another
important area of expertise.
People are living
longer today and looking
forward to remaining active
and physically fit as
they age. But joint damage
can slow them down,
whether it is caused by
arthritis, injury, or years
of wear and tear. North-
Shore’s orthopaedic surgeons
are leaders in total
hip and knee replacement,
utilizing the latest in arthritis
treatment, advanced
surgical technology and
care options.
Recovery is a vital part
of the post-surgery process.
Specialists precisely
tailor pain management
to each patient’s needs.
Patients get moving the
first day to ensure quicker,
long-term recovery.
Your road to active living starts at Covenant Village of Northbrook
Most adults understand the
importance of exercise for overall
health. But what about the
other aspects of wellness, beyond
fitness?
Residents at Covenant Village
of Northbrook, a 55-acre senior
living community, have access
to a complete range of resources,
events and programs designed
to promote active aging and
achieve whole-person wellness.
“There is a common misconception
that wellness is onedimensional,
focusing only on
fitness,” Executive Director
Neil Warnygora said. “At Covenant
Village, we address eight
dimensions of wellness through
our LifeConnect wellness philosophy:
community, emotional,
intellectual, physical, resident/
staff involvement, social, spiritual
and vocational.”
According to the 2016 National
Wellness Benchmarks Report
by the International Council on
Active Aging, participants in
wellness programs enjoy a high
quality of life. More than half
of residents who participate in
wellness programs are “very satisfied”
with their overall quality
of life in the community.
“We operate with a residentcentered
philosophy,” Warnygora
said. “Our culture supports
active aging at any age and ability.”
Covenant Village offers a
variety of choices to help residents
continue living, learning,
growing and challenging themselves
— from dining options,
programs and day trips to educational
classes, physical activities
and volunteer opportunities both
on campus and within the community.
Dining
The community offers monthly
meal plan options and flexible
dining times. Menu selections
are updated regularly and
include daily specials in addition
to weekly lunch and dinner
menus. The executive chef
prepares meals that are delicious
and healthy. Residents can dine
together in the bistro or dining
room, or even take food to go.
Learning
Residents can take part in
foreign-language classes and
art classes, as well as attend
on-campus theater and musical
MEET LISA
I have been working for Pascal pour Elle for 21 years, but at Vidal Sassoon Academy was where my love
for hair began. My favorite precision cut would have to be the graduated bob along with long layering, and
short textured hairstyles. Building upon my skills, I attended Bumble and Bumble University, where I became
fascinated with my edgy, razored cuts. I love being able to smooth unruly hair with the Keratin Complex
treatment or create beautiful length and volume using Industrial Length extensions. The amount of continued
education Pascal provides helps keep me up to date on the latest trends. Styling hair is my passion and
speciality. A great, long-lasting blow out makes for the perfect day!
An extraordinary healthcare experience has arrived
A new medical group is poised
to change the way we experience
healthcare in nearly every facet.
Pain Relief Institute (PRI) is
expanding its philosophy and
steadfast passion for patient care
that started 17 years ago. Recently
renamed to better exemplify
what it is and what it stands for,
PRI now has five centers in the
Chicago suburbs and is shaking
up not only how we view pain
management, but also how we
look at healthcare.
“We took a good hard look
at what healthcare is becoming
and what we’d learned over 17
years,” said Shannon Patel, clinical
director at PRI. “In a healthcare
environment distracted by
healthcare reform uncertainty,
decreasing reimbursements and
constant battles with insurance,
we doubled down our efforts to
solely focus on patient care. We
still accept Medicare and most
insurances, but we’ve created
better processes allowing our
clinical staff to spend more time
with their patients.”
PRI’s philosophy is very simple:
see fewer patients, spend
more time with every patient,
schedule appointments within
days and not weeks or even
months, and create an experience
for the patient that is the
foundation to cultivating a genuine
patient-provider bond. PRI
schedules new patient appointments
every 30-45 minutes, allowing
staff to take the time and
really get to understand patients
and their complete health history.
Traditional healthcare clinics
schedule every 10 minutes
and spend seven to eight minutes
with the patient.
Today, most clinics are trying
to see more patients, not less, due
to decreasing reimbursements.
When asked what prompted
the change in philosophy, Patel
said, “We’ve been surveying our
patients about their experience
with us and their other doctors
FINALLY!
A national remodeling brand that understands our generation’s unique home improvement needs!
for years and each year it was
the same thing, they didn’t feel
rushed with us and felt like we
took the time to listen (like we
were family). In fact, we added
Institute into our name as it represents
learning, research and
implementation. We are constantly
learning from our patients
as to what they want and
delivering each and every time.”
As a healthcare provider, PRI
sees itself as a portal for patients
suffering with pain. It is the clinic
a patient can visit to be evaluated
and then explore all options,
focusing on conservative ones
first. There are plenty of traditional
pain clinics, but none that
are strictly focused on conservative
and non-invasive pain care.
Patients can typically be seen in
24-48 hours and, during the initial
visit, the staff is able to get
a thorough understanding of the
condition. Then, upon coming
to a mutual decision, PRI serves
as the patient’s liaison (when indicated)
to quickly make an appointment
with a highly respected
specialist.
PRI also offers same day treatments
in the clinic for conservative
medical management, noninvasive
pain management and
physical therapy.
PRI has locations in Highland
Park, Vernon Hills, Glenview,
Hinsdale and Vernon Hills.
How to maintain healthy and
beautiful hair as weather in
Chicago starts to change
Now that the winter months are
upon us, and the days are starting to
get colder, it’s time to start thinking
about ways to protect our hair from
the damage that winter elements can
cause. Here are a few tips that will
help you maintain healthy, beautiful
hair this season.
Static can be a real problem when
conditions are cold and dry. A great
way to combat static is to use a good
heat styling product before blow drying,
such as Balm d’Or Heat Styling
Shield by Oribe, which is used on
damp hair before you add heat to your
hair.
During the winter months, it’s a
great idea to treat your hair once a
week to a deep conditioning regimen.
This will help replenish the moisture
which tends to get depleted from
things such as dry heat in your home
and cold winter air. We recommend
Kerastase fusion treatment in the salon
to fix your hair needs. A great at home
treatment is Brazilian Blowout Deep
Conditioning Masque. Work through
your wet hair from root to ends leaving
on your hair for 10-20 minutes and
rinse thoroughly.
We also find that if you can keep
hair-washing to a maximum of two
to three times a week in the winter
months, this will prevent your hair
from drying out too much. Also, make
sure to dry your hair well before leaving
the house. Not only will you help
yourself avoid catching a cold, but the
moisture in your hair combined with
the cold air can add further damage to
your hair by making it more brittle and
dry.
A regular trim is a great way to keep
your hair healthy during the winter
months, as well. A light dusting of the
ends every four to six weeks will help
reduce the chance of dry splitting ends.
Bottom line: invest in your hair. It is
the crown you never take off.
Oral-systemic medicine: The new standard in healthcare
Research suggests that
as many as three out of
four Americans show
signs of mild periodontal
disease while 30 percent
show signs of chronic
periodontitis. So, why are
these findings so shocking?
Studies point to the
damaging triggers behind
these very serious infections
as being the same as
those behind cardiovascular
disease, stroke, diabetes,
rheumatoid arthritis
and even Alzheimer’s. In
fact, evidence indicates
that up to 50 percent of
heart attacks are triggered
by oral pathogens, and
more than six oral bacteria
appear to be linked to Alzheimer’s.
“Understanding the
science behind the emergence
of oral and overall
systemic health has quickly
become mainstream in
dentistry,” said Dr. Laniel
Razdolsky, of Lake Forest
Dental Associates. “Many
health disciplines are coming
together for developmental
research and study
to see just how great the
impacts are.”
As a result, oral pathogens
are being explored
as the potential origin for
many serious health issues
including pulmonary
infection and even pneumonia.
What’s more, periodontal
disease is now being
studied as a complex
oral and systemic disease
that carries as big a risk
as high blood pressure for
strokes. Periodontal disease
can even be viewed as
a marker of subclinical organ
damage. If addressed
by coordinated teams of
both dental and medical
professionals, however,
we can slow or even reverse
the progression of
such diseases.
“In some cases, oral
health doesn’t just have direct
implications on one’s
systemic health, it further
impacts quality of life as
we age,” Razdolsky said.
“What we do and, more
importantly, what we don’t
do can have far reaching
consequences.”
To that end, Lake Forest
Dental Associates screens
diabetic patients who may
be at a higher risk for infections
such as gingivitis.
Left untreated, this infection
can lead to periodontitis,
putting the diabetic patient
at an even higher risk
for heart-related issues.
Conversely, research suggests
that good periodontal
hygiene may a have positive
impact on blood sugar
levels.
“While there are many
ongoing studies to help us
better understand the correlation
between oral and
systemic health, we can be
assured there is a new dental
and medical standard
being developed regarding
patient care,” Razdolsky
said. “At our office, we
really get to know our patient’s
full medical history
and encourage them to
take an active part in their
long-term health.”
