Life & Job Skills For Successful Europeans

ISSUE 1

Nowadays it is fundamental to guide our students

and empower them to form views and establish

skills which promote the values of democracy,

respect for human rights, peace and

freedom.

The development of student's personality and

successful social integration and life skills will

ensure the smooth transition from school life to

real life situations.

Conditions that allow the student to develop his personality with

strong self-perception, emotional stability, critical and dialectical skill

and positive attitude to cooperation self-motivated personality and a responsible,

democratic and free, with social and humanitarian principles,

without religious and cultural prejudices.

At the same time the teachers have the duty to approach school learning

to a fast changing technologically based market, so the students

will develop a new awareness of know-how and skills necessary to find

an employment in areas that might have been struck by the economic

crisis.

They need to acquire the necessary skills that will ensure their employment

as soon as possible after graduation or the life skills necessary to

excel in Universities and also help in the long run, to avoid excluding

them for a long period of time from the labor market. It is also essential

to cope with unforeseen changes and become happy workers throughout

their active life.

The activities which form the core of this project aim at developing

open and innovative teaching and learning practices as well as sharing

new effective pedagogies which involve the use of ICTs as an essential

vehicle to be carried out.

At the same time, the project focuses on student-centered and problembased

active learning by using innovative didactical materials in order

to address underachievement in foreign language learning skills.

In the current educational context,

it takes special relevance for our

students to develop a European

awareness, and that is only achievable

by sharing and working with

other students coming from different

educational contexts, different

cultures and, in fact, different realities.

This project will allow our

institutions to make contact with a

multicultural European reality

where different languages are spoken

but where we all share a common

principle, as we all belong to the same community.

The needs of the institutions involved, and thus of our students, are focused

on the development of the linguistic competence, not only in

their mother tongue but also in the foreign languages studied in each

school. Learning a second language is key in our current society, and

our students are well aware of that. However, improving their competence

level is essential if we want our students to be competitive in our

European society.

That is why we have designed a project in which we will develop innovative

teaching methodologies, based on the implementation of the Information

and Communication Technologies in order to raise our students'

motivation towards learning a foreign language in a real and significant

context.

The main objective of the project “Life and

Job Skills for Successful Europeans” (LJSSE

from now on) is to establish a knowledge alliance

which allows us to share best practices

in the field of developing and improving,

skills and key personal competences of learners

such us: wish initiative and responsibility,

persistence in achieving goals, perception -

learning speed, common sense, Self-test - resistance

to pressure and stress, confidence,

flexibility - adaptability, effectiveness, results

orientation class - diligence / attention to detail,

creativity / innovation cooperativity, willingness - disposal, determination

consistency - conscience, responsibility - professionalism

positive spirit, optimism - excitement, interpersonal sensitivity, giving

special emphasis to the aid of the Information and Communication

Technologies. At the same time, we aim at raising our students' motivation

to identify skills and training needs by connecting educational institutions

with enterprises, workforce development agencies, government

and community groups. The establishment of such a knowledge

alliance in which six partners are involved will enable us to accomplish

the desired objectives, since it will allow our students to see from themselves

other learning realities and especially other cultures, as well as

to interact with others in a real context, raising thus their interest in

learning the foreign language.

However, by sharing and confronting ideas,

practices and experiences around the

topic of job skills, we would develop and

reinforce a network which our whole educational

community would take advantage

of, since it would create positive

and longlasting effects upon those directly

and indirectly involved, from our students to our teaching staff, as

well as the students' families, our administrative staff and, what is

more, the municipalities where our institutions are located.

The students directly involved in the project are from 12 to 17 years

old, and they would also

take part in a students'

exchange which

will enable them to get

steeped into the different

realities of each of the

partners, benefiting from

the enriching factor of

being in

contact with educational

systems and cultural and

social realities different

from theirs. The exchanges

would also have

a motivational impact on

our students and would also provide an opportunity to pupils coming

from families with low incomes who

would not be able to visit and get in touch with other European realities

otherwise.

We will tend to focus education on development of specific professionrelated

skills, and learners are often unaware of the other attributes –

fundamental personal competences, necessary for being competitive

within the labor markets of today’s free market economies and globalized

world.

The specific objectives we aim at achieving are the following:

1. Promote dialogue, respect, participation, knowledge

and decision making among countries in the European

Union;

2. Greater understanding and responsiveness to social,

ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity;

3. Educate our next generation to have better skills for jobs,

4. Provide them with the skills to search and find appropriate careers

according to their skills and talents,

5. Look at future prospects and view the technical skills equally posi-

5

tive in their job search like the theoretical or science careers,

6. Empower students with the future necessary skills of using modern

technology in their search, learning and training for jobs.

7. Learn to work together and to share information with other educational

institutions;

8. Develop collaborative learning strategies and entrepreneurship

among students and teachers.

All over the world occur important socioeconomic changes, due to the

unprecedented economic crisis. Education in all

European countries is considered the most vital

factor.

This project follows the principles of UNESCO

that support education as the key to social and

economic development.

It aims at a sustainable world with justice in societies,

where knowledge is assessed as a valuable

resource and promotes culture, peace and

the defense of human rights.

Developing and improving student's skills through our project will try

to build bridges for the smooth transition of students into the real

changing world.

An innovative aspect also is the students make in depth research on the

6

main topic, after every meeting,

that concerns and

"Swot Analysis" which means

strengths, weaknesses, opportunities

and threats for each region

about the job skills(youth employment

prospects) and life skills. So

regarding the Strengths the students

will investigate the most competitive

jobs, what are the available resources

that are unique or have the

lowest relative cost to create an enterprise

and what consider local

economic factors as intrinsic power in each the region and what the relevant

life skills needed.

Regarding the Weaknesses will investigate what could be improved,

what should be avoided, what consider local economic factors as intrinsic

weakness.

Concerning the Opportunities raised the students will investigate

what are the interesting trends regarding the region. Useful opportunities

can be considered: Changes in technology and markets, in small or

large scale, Changes in state policy in the field of interests, Changes in

social patterns, population profiles, lifestyle changes, local events. Finally,

threats will show the changes in n occupations that already exist,

the technological changes that threaten or cancel the existing economy

of the region, the financial problems etc.

Finally It also concerns the acquisition and development of new teaching

methodologies which would benefit our educational institution as

well as our partners.

At the same time, the creation of innovative teaching resources, which

will be some of the products of the present project, is a key stage in the

development of the project described, since the implementation of ICTs

will result in avant-garde activities framed in the digital era characteristic

of the 21st Century.
