FALL OPEN HOUSE AT OLD
SAWYER HOUSE
Residents and visitors are invited
to view a local example of early
Colonial architecture and enjoy a look
at Colonial life when the Merrimac
Town Improvement Society holds
their annual fall open house at the
Old Sawyer House Saturday October
14. The event will be held between
10 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the Old Sawyer
House, located at 20 East Main Street
(adjacent to the Merrimac Fire and
Police Station) in Merrimac, Ma. In
addition to tours of the Old Sawyer
House (circa 1735), mulled cider
and light refreshments will be served
around the main fireplace of the Sawyer
House. The Old Sawyer House, a
classic New England saltbox, was built
by John Kendrick and sold to Aaron
Sawyer in 1758. It remained in the
Sawyer family until 1908 when it was
sold, along with 14 acres of woodland,
to the Merrimac Town Improvement
Society. The house retains much of
its original paneling, original upstairs
windows and one original fireplace on
the second floor. The two downstairs
fireplaces were renovated in the mid-
19th century. Furnishings and artifacts
located in the home reflect the house’s
First Period Colonial status.

Minimalism: a Documentary About
the Important Things - Weighed
down by too much stuff? Looking
for ways to focus on what really
matters in life? The Newbury Town
Library is screening the documentary,
Minimalism: a Documentary About
the Important Things, on Saturday,
October 14th from 10:30-12:30p.
Following the screening will be a
discussion which will include practical
information on how and where to get
rid of different kinds of “stuff,” how to
access recycling and minimalism apps,
and the 30-Day Minimalist Challenge.

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats will
celebrate the Bicentennial of Henry
David Thoreau’s birth with a Free
Nature Walk at Rough Meadows
Wildlife Sanctuary Saturday, October
14 from 1-3 pm. (Rain date October
28) Join us as Lisa Hutchings and her
team of Teacher Naturalists from Mass
Audubon’s Joppa Flats leads families
on a guided nature path through a
beautiful oak hickory forest into a
breath-taking salt marsh for science
activities. Best for ages 4 and up. Dress
for the weather and wear footwear that
can get muddy and damp. Cameras,
scopes, and binoculars are optional.
We will provide journals, handouts
and refreshments.

SPECIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
PROGRAM: THE LIVES OF
LOONS
Saturday, October 14th @ 1:30
pm - Our featured speaker is a
photographer from southern NH
named Kevin Talbot. Kevin has a
wonderful presentation featuring
his images of loons. In the past he’s
delivered his presentation at the NH
Audubon Society and Exeter Town
Hall. The show features about 150
images along with his “non-expert
knowledge” of the birds. His goal is
to pass along information pertaining
to the different calls and signs of stress
which we often unwittingly cause these
animals, as well as their family life and
common habits. By helping people to
understand these birds better, Kevin
hopes to help protect and preserve
them for future generations. This
should be a GREAT presentation. This
free public program will occur during
the regular monthly meeting of the
Photographic Society of Parker River
NWR. The Society welcomes anyone
who has an interest in nature, wildlife,
and/or photography - whether you are
a total novice or earn a living by taking
pictures! The club meets every month,
generally on the second Saturday
afternoon. Club activities include
special presentations, slide shows (of
members’ work), intra-club mentoring
and training, photo shoots, on-line
photo sharing, and involvement in
the refuge’s various photographyrelated
programs, events, and outreach
activities. The program will take
place in the refuge visitor center’s
auditorium. Capacity is limited to
85 attendees (first-come, first-served).

RESEARCHING YOUR SWEDISH
GENEALOGY
“Tips for Researching Your Swedish
Ancestors” will be presented by
Marilyn O’Brien at Amesbury Public
Library, on Saturday, October 14, at
1:30 pm. This presentation combines
pictures of Sweden with digital images
of records that provide information
useful in exploring the lives of your
Swedish ancestors. Techniques for
locating places of residence, as well as
the records that can be found there,
will be demonstrated. A handout that
includes useful resources, including
websites and translations of common
Swedish genealogical words, will be
provided. The presenter is proud to
be half Swedish-American, and has
done extensive Swedish genealogical
