Active Aging Expo to return Oct. 21 for third year
Tinley Park Convention
Center event to feature
senior-focused vendors
Jon DePaolis, Freelance Reporter
The Active Aging Expo may
be turning 3 years old, but the
event is geared toward seniors
ages 50 and up.
The expo is slated for 9 a.m.-
1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the
Tinley Park Convention Center,
18451 Convention Center Drive.
The free event is being sponsored
by DuPage Medical Group,
Ingalls Health System, and Spring
Creek Nursing & Rehab.
The expo is to feature free
games of bingo and prizes, music,
informational sessions and
more than 40 vendor booths.
“We provide a variety of vendors,
covering everything from
health and wellness to insurance
and financial planning,” said
Heather Warthen, chief events
officers at 22nd Century Media.
“It’s really a benefit to seniors.
We have nursing homes and
long-term care facilities also
there. It’s helpful to get that information,
even if they are not
quite at that step yet. It’s good to
get information on those topics,
so they can plan for the future.”
There also will be health
screenings provided by the College
of DuPage nursing department,
including blood pressure
screenings. Jewel-Osco also is
providing flu shots.
Among the vendors are This
is My Legacy and Quality Plus
Photo, which provide services to
take old pictures and store them
on modern filing devices.
“It helps to preserve your family
history,” Warthen said.
Representatives from American
School Bus Company also
will be on-hand, looking for retired
seniors to join the ranks as
bus drivers.
Informational sessions are to
include speakers from Spring
Creek Nursing & Rehab, Du-
Page Medical Group and Ingalls
Health System.
“The point of the Active Aging
Expo is to not only provide
a service to the community and
information to our aging community
but also to provide an
opportunity to learn what businesses
are available in the community
to help with future planning,”
Warthen said.
Additionally, Patricia Mc-
Clure, the author of “Losing a
Hero to Alzheimer’s: The Story
of Pearl,” is scheduled to talk
about her book around 9:15 a.m.
Bruce Korosa will be leading a
polka music band and performing
at the expo, and the Something
Special Singers — a choral group
featuring senior citizens, from
Kankakee — also will perform.
The first 300 attendees are to
receive a free gift bag.
Vitality Health Systems is changing
the health of the aging population
Vitality Health Systems has been a
source for health and healing in New
Lenox for almost four years now.
They recently expanded into Schaumburg
and are very excited to be helping all
ages of the community lose weight and get
healthy.
“I want to fight chronic disease in
America,” said Davis Jaspers, founder
and creator of the Vitalife program. “Obesity
related illnesses kill more Americans
than any other diseases. In fact, obesity
is now considered to be an epidemic in
America with 70 percent of the adult population
overweight or obese.”
Jaspers is quoting the most recent statistics
put out on obesity by the National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
Seventy-five percent of America’s medical
costs will be due to eight weight-related illnesses
that are preventable.
Glen, for example, decided to do something
about his health as he aged. Glen is
85 years old and came to Vitality Health
Systems.
“I wasn’t sure what I was getting into,
but it sounded like it made sense,” Glen
said of his experience during his initial
consultation at Vitality.
But afterwards, it sounds like he made the
right decision.
“I was blown away that my migraines,
which I have had since I was in high
school, went away after only two days
of being on the Vitalife program,” Glen
said. “I learned how to prepare healthy
meals at home, learned how to eat for my
health, and more importantly, the staff at
Vitality guided me into excellent health. I
lost 30 pounds in 40 days and have kept
the weight off for over a year now. I am
the same weight now as I was in 1985
and went from a 44 waist down to a 34.
I have remained migraine free all because
of the Vitalife program at Vitality Health
Systems.”
Tinley Park woman pain
free after innovative
surgery at Silver Cross
Delphine Pankonin
loves to spend time with
her granddaughter, however,
severe pain in her knee
limited her mobility.
She’s had minor arthritis
in her knees for a while,
but it started to affect her
everyday life, including
walking up and down the
stairs in her own home.
In April, Pankonin, 71,
scheduled a visit with Dr.
Andrew Ehmke, a surgeon
with Midwest Institute of
Robotic Surgery at Silver
Cross Hospital, and an X-
ray revealed the source of
her pain was deteriorated
cartilage in her knee joint.
Pankonin, who lives in
Tinley Park, was able to
get a steroid injection, but
that treatment only lasted a
few weeks.
“I told him to schedule
me for knee surgery and
I’m coming!” she said.
So on July 20, 2017,
Pankonin became one of
the first patients at Silver
Cross Hospital in New
Lenox to undergo a total
knee replacement using
the Mako Robotic System.
Pankonin was already familiar
with Ehmke, who
performed her hip surgery
last year.
Silver Cross Hospital is
currently the only facility
in Will and Grundy counties
to offer hip and knee
replacement procedures
using the Mako Surgical
Robot. The Midwest Institute
for Robotic Surgery
at Silver Cross Hospital
performs more roboticassisted
surgeries than any
other facility in the Chicago
area.
Mako Robotic-Arm
Assisted Surgery System
Surgeons create a detailed
plan specific to each
patient.
Patients, such as Pankonin,
get a CT scan of the
joint, which the surgeon
uses to create a 3D virtual
model of the knee. The
Mako system helps guide
the surgeon within the predefined
area and prevents
the surgeon from moving
outside the planed boundaries.
“Robotic surgery allows
me to accurately restore
the anatomy of the knee
because of the precision of
the Mako Robot,” Ehmke
said. “I am still the one
performing the operation
and have full control over
the robot. The robot is just
another tool to ensure accurate
placement of the
implant.”
Pankonin said Ehmke
explained the whole procedure
prior to surgery and
made her feel more comfortable.
“From the very first time
I saw him, I liked his bedside
manner,” she said.
“He explains everything
very thoroughly. That’s
why I came back to him
for my knee.”
Recovery
Pankonin is currently
going through physical
therapy, and she said her
recovery is going very
well.
“Just a few weeks after
surgery and Delphine’s recovery
is going extremely
well thanks to the Mako
Robot.” Ehmke said.
“I only had to use my
cane for one week. Then
my physical therapist took
it away from me,” Pankonin
added with a laugh. “I
can walk stairs now. So
I’m very excited about my
progress.”
Living and loving with Alzheimer’s and dementia
As the story goes, an
elderly gentleman hurried
from his doctor’s appointment
to join his wife for
breakfast, as he did every
day, at the memory care
community where she
lived. The doctor asked
why he continued to go
faithfully when the wife
no longer knew who he
was.
“Because,” he replied,
“I still know who she is.”
At Autumn Leaves’
memory care assisted living
communities, we see
this kind of devotion every
day, and are equally
devoted to helping loved
ones stay connected while
facing this heartbreaking
disease.
Changing roles, not hearts
Clair Jameson, Autumn
Leaves’ life engagement
director, remembers Alice
and her husband, Durward,
who visited every day,
bringing Alice’s favorite
cookies.
“My role has changed,
but not my love for her,
or hers for me,” Durward
said.
Wise words, said Jameson.
“When a spouse has
dementia, the relationship
must change as the disease
progresses,” she said. “The
love is still there. The love
is still strong, but the relationship
must adjust to
new realities.”
Jameson recalled another
couple’s devotion.
“Perry visited Nathalie
daily to work in the garden,”
she said. “Gardening
kept them connected to
their past. Whatever they
enjoyed together before,
he tried to bring to her here
and now.”
Keeping love alive
Dementia care author
Jolene Brackey notes, “A
spouse may not recognize
you, but the love is still
very much alive.”
A wife may be expecting
a younger version of
her husband. So even if
she doesn’t recognize the
older man who visits every
day, she remembers her
husband and still feels affection
for him.
Brackey likes to tell the
story of a woman with Alzheimer’s
who no longer
recognized her husband,
Bud. At one visit, Bud
gently stroked his wife’s
cheek, a gesture of affection
they’d shared over the
years.
Not knowing who he
was, the woman told him,
“I’m sorry, sir, but my
heart belongs to Bud.”
The greatest wealth is
health – as we know, teeth
are not immune to the aging
process. After a lifetime
of chewing food and
drinking acidic drinks, our
teeth become worn, weakened
and damaged. Therefore,
maintaining healthy
oral hygiene habits are
crucial as we age.
Below are five helpful
dental care tips for seniors
provided by Orland Dental
Care:
• Maintain your daily
dental hygiene routine
– Keep brushing twice a
3 things grandparents need to know about raising their grandchildren
STATEPOINT MEDIA
From single parents to traditional
and multigenerational
households, modern families
come in all shapes and sizes. But
did you know there’s an uptick in
the number of grandparents raising
grandchildren? According to
data from The Pew Charitable
Trusts, 2.9 million grandparents
were raising their grandchildren
in 2015 compared with 2.5 million
in 2005.
Oftentimes, grandparents become
primary caregivers due to
unforeseen circumstances. Here
are three things those taking on
this responsibility should consider.
Protect their financial future
• A recent study found 30 percent
of all households don’t
have life insurance, according
to LIMRA, a life insurance
research organization. Grandparents
should be sure this
coverage is up to date.
• They might also consider purchasing
term insurance – life
insurance issued for a limited
period of time. More affordable
than a whole life policy, it provides
financial security for the
golden years, helps supplement
retirement income and can assist
with final expenses. A term
life insurance policy can even
help pay off a mortgage – so
grandparents have peace of
mind knowing that dependents
have a roof over their heads –
and can also be used for other
child-rearing expenses, such as
college tuition.
Keep them safe
• Accidental injury is the leading
cause of death for children
up to 14 years old, and more
than a third of accident-related
deaths happen in the home, reports
KidsHealth.
• To create a safe living environment
for younger children,
secure large furniture to walls,
purchase safety gates for staircases,
and install outlet covers,
corner protectors, security
locks and appliance latches. It
might also be a good time to
update in-home safety features
for grandparents, too. Handrails
provide better grip on
staircases, and anti-slip mats
and grab bars in the bathroom
can add extra stability.
Promote smarter driving
• As teens get behind the wheel,
encourage them to drive safely.
A 2015 statistic from the
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention says six teens
die every day in car crashes in
the US, and this is the number
one killer of teens. Distracted
driving is the cause of 58 percent
of teen-involved traffic
crashes, according to the National
Organization for Youth
Safety. Remind grandchildren
about the dangers of texting,
using apps and changing the
radio station while driving.
• Also, reevaluate your auto insurance
policy. Talk to an
agent about whether it makes
more sense to add grandchildren
to an existing policy or
take one out for them specifically.
Grandparents may be
able to add grandchildren as
secondary drivers on a policy,
but should be prepared to pay
higher rates since teens may be
considered high-risk. Look for
a cost-effective solution, such
as the Youthful Driver Discount
offered by Erie Insurance.
Eligible licensed drivers
20 and under can save up to 20
percent on their car insurance.
Plus, drivers under age 21
who complete an accredited
driver’s education course may
also be eligible for discounts.
Caring for grandchildren can
be overwhelming. However,
preparation can help ensure your
family’s safety and security.
Smith Crossing’s longest-serving staff member retires
“You’ve reached Smith
Crossing. This is Georgia.”
For the past 13 years,
Georgia Vanek’s cheerful
voice has greeted callers
phoning residents and
staff members at the life
plan community located
at 10501 Emilie Lane in
Orland Park. The former
Orland Park resident took
on many more responsibilities
as the community
grew.
Vanek, who prefers
to state her age as “old
enough to retire,” recently
did just that. On Sept.
29, she turned over her
responsibilities as receptionist
supervisor, receptionist
and administrative
assistant to the executive
director at Smith Crossing.
Vanek and her husband,
Bill, recently relocated to
St. John, Indiana
Vanek leaves a legacy
of being the soul of Smith
Crossing, according to
some residents and administrators
“Georgia played an essential
role establishing
Smith Crossing as a life
plan community,” said
Kevin McGee, president
and CEO of Smith Senior
Living, sponsor of Smith
Crossing and Smith Village
in Chicago’s Beverly
Morgan Park neighborhood.
“And once we were
ready for residents to
move in, she helped make
it a place where people
foster friendships and offer
mutual support they
experience in their own
families.”
McGee served as the
first executive director for
Smith Crossing.
Smith Crossing sprang
up from 32 acres once occupied
by soybean fields.
It officially opened in November
2004, but Vanek
joined the staff of Smith
Senior Living even before
that when there only was
a sales office at a nearby
shopping center.
In 2002, she sought employment
after passing up
a job offer with Honeywell
that would have required
moving to Phoenix. For 17
years, she had worked as
an administrative assistant
to a regional manager of
Honeywell and as a customer
service representative.
Answering a blind ad in
a local newspaper, Vanek
applied for a sales and
marketing job with Smith
Senior Living. She was the
initial contact person for
many of Smith Crossing’s
first residents, who hailed
from Orland Park and surrounding
suburbs.
Once Smith Crossing
opened with 87 independent
living apartments
and 10 villas, Vanek’s
duties transitioned to operations,
serving as an administrative
assistant and
receptionist. “That’s when
Georgia truly became the
face and voice of Smith
Crossing,” McGee said.
“She had everything to do
with making people feel
welcome.”
Within a few months
after opening for independent
living residents,
Smith Crossing opened
its first assisted living and
memory support apartments,
plus skilled nursing
care rooms.
For retirees, Hanover
scrapers and no worries
about frozen pipes.
home ownership but with
options.
All floor plans feature
full-size kitchens, open
living spaces and full
bathrooms. Even better, a
maintenance team is just
a call away to assist with
projects large and small.
Four-legged friends feel
at home, too, because it’s
a pet-friendly community.
Hanover Place also represents
a value for retirees
because the independent
living rental community
requires no down-payment,
just flexible monthto-month
rent with most
utilities included.
Residents enjoy many
extra resort-style services
and amenities that make
life easier and more enjoyable
Place, or transportation is
provided.
Scheduled activities,
from fitness classes to
games and crafts, at the
community make life fun.
Planned social events offer
opportunities to meet new
friends. Should residents
have health care needs, an
on-site health clinic and
in-home health services
are also available.
Life at Hanover Place,
in a desirable, convenient
location, puts area attractions
just minutes away.
Residents live less than 3
miles from the Metra station,
farmer’s market, Music
in the Plaza and Benches
on the Avenue. As for
dining and entertainment,
coffeehouses and bakeries,
fine dining and nightlife,
sports bars and lounges are
all part of the neighborhood.
The community is conveniently
located near Interstate
80 and Interstate
57, offering easy travel to
Chicago and neighboring
states. Metra’s commuter
rail service provides fast
daily service to Chicago
Finding a ‘hidden gem’ at Alvernia Manor
Is mom living alone,
are you concerned of her
safety? Is she able to reach
out quickly for assistance,
should something happen?
Do you worry dad is taking
his daily medications as prescribed
or eating nutritional
meals? Is the hired home
care provider giving that
special aunt all the care, attention
and socialization she
needs and deserves?
Alvernia Manor Senior
Living is the “hidden gem”
that can ease a family’s concerns.
The mission of this
unique senior living community
is to provide seniors
a loving, safe and caring
home. Alvernia Manor has
a warm, homey setting, and
its walls brim of compassion,
fulfillment and fun.
Amenities include three
daily meals plus snacks,
staffed healthcare services,
24-hour emergency call
system, housekeeping, furnished
private rooms and
a calendar full of activities
and socialization.
In addition, there are no
annuities or endowment
fees. For more than 45
years, the School Sisters
of St. Francis of Christ the
King and their dedicated
staff have cared for seniors
as their own family with
respect, love and concern.
Family and friends refer
to Alvernia Manor as their
“hidden gem.”
Alvernia Manor is located
on a hilltop in the
southwest suburb of Lemont.
With its beautiful bluff
location, the vivid colors of
the four seasons are played
out annually in panoramic
view. The Little Bit of
Heaven pavilion is a favorite
spot for residents to
take in the scenery and enjoy
the fresh air. Residents
also have the opportunity to
enjoy several other secured
patios or common areas,
relax in the privacy of their
room or spend spiritual
time in the chapel.
Keeping a resident’s
body and mind healthy and
active is the goal the Sisters
and staff strive for. Games,
exercise, movies, bingo,
best buddy visits, shopping
trips, entertainment and
other special outings, like a
trip to Brookfield Zoo, are
among the many activities
on Alvernia’s monthly activity
calendar — definitely
fun times enjoyed by all.
Alvernia Manor’s Wellness
Coordinators and
healthcare staff ensures
resident’s medications are
dispensed, vitals taken and
daily health monitored.
Fresh meals are prepared
daily and all housekeeping
needs attended to. All this
adds up to no more worries
for the resident and family.
In addition, Adult Day
Services or Short-Term
Stay are other available options
for families. Loved
ones receive the care and
recreation they need in a
safe, loving environment,
while caregivers go to work
or get a much needed break.
Whether for a few hours, a
day or a longer period of
time, Alvernia Manor may
be exactly what your family
is looking for.
Come see for yourself
all Alvernia Manor Senior
Living offers. The care,
charm and beauty are undeniable.
Ingalls partners with UChicago Med, offers
more services to Chicago’s south suburbs
The recent merger between
the University of
Chicago Medicine and
Ingalls Health System has
resulted in a new logo and
rebranding as part of a
major initiative to reflect
the combined enterprise’s
geographic reach and expanded
services.
“UChicago Medicine is
now much more than an
academic medical center
in Hyde Park, and the time
is right for us to show that
transformation through
our logo and a broadened
brand promise of being at
the forefront of medicine,
science and education,”
said Kenneth S. Polonsky,
executive vice president of
medical affairs at the University
of Chicago. “We
now can provide a continuum
of services in which
academic medicine powers
community care, fueled by
our clinical excellence, research
breakthroughs and
teaching mission.”
Ingalls offers a regional
network of top-rated outpatient
services from highly
respected physicians
and specialists in modern
settings throughout Chicago’s
south suburbs. It also
features innovative service
offerings, such as macular
degeneration treatment
from world-class retinal
specialists, spine surgery
from renowned experts,
and more oncology clinical
trials than any other
community hospital in the
NL-based business
works to make
clothes dryers safer
Hidden buildup in
clothes dryer vent
is fire hazard
Most people know they
need to clean out their
dryer lint tray between
each cycle, but what lurks
behind the wall is just as
important for safety and
avoiding fire traps, as well
as fully efficient dryer performance.
Joe Enzenberger, owner
of Dryer Vent Wizard,
opened his New Lenoxbased
business in 2009.
Lint is the villain. Lint
that has been allowed to
build up and linger too
long in the dryer exhaust
vent.
It is estimated by the
U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and
the U.S. Fire Administration
that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers
occur annually. These fires
account for an average of
20 deaths, 370 injuries and
more than $88 million in
property damage. “Failure
to clean the dryer vent”
was the leading factor, according
to U.S. Fire Administration
reports.
“It is something very few
people know about or think
about,” said Enzenberger,
whose company specializes
in dryer vent cleaning,
repair, alteration and installation.
“It is the leading
cause of dryer fires.”
Lint accumulation also
can cause dryers to stop
working or to work inefficiently.
A dryer vent
clogged with lint can add
as much as $18 to $24 per
month to energy costs.
“Improper venting
causes problems, as
well,” he said. “The dryer
exhaust duct and connections
should be made of
rigid metal or semi-rigid
metal and secured with
metal heat-resistant tape,
rather than duct tape. I
often find plastic or foil
accordion-type material,
which can easily trap lint
and is more susceptible to
kinks and crushing.”
Warning signs include:
• Clothes are taking more
than one cycle to dry, especially
jeans & towels.
• No lint visible on lint
screen.
• Dryer repeatedly stops
during a cycle.
• Clothes have moldy
smell after dry cycle.
• Clothes are very hot after
a dry cycle.
• The top of your dryer hot
to the touch while running.
• There’s excess lint left on
your clothing.
“This has been a consumer
education process,
but it’s hard to get the
word out,” Enzenberger
said. “Most don’t call until
they have a serious problem
with their dryer.”
He suggests people treat
clothes dryers as a household
item in need of regular
maintenance. Consumers
can protect dryer performance
and promote safety
by cleaning the lint screen
between each use, ensuring
the connection between the
dryer and wall is made of
compliant material and remains
unkinked, and having
the dryer exhaust duct
cleaned regularly. Dryer
manufacturers recommend
inspection and cleaning at
least annually.
October is National Fire
Prevention Month and is
the perfect time to have an
inspection and cleaning of
clothes dryers and dryer
vent systems.
Another important tip
– never let your clothes
dryer run when you are out
of the house or asleep.
Local music duo’s
Phil & Amy set for
two upcoming holiday
Recording artists Phil & Amy have
upcoming Christmas dine and matinee
performances scheduled for White Fence
Farm, Tuesday, Nov. 28, and Starved
Rock Lodge, Wednesday, Dec. 6. The
popular husband and wife duo have appeared
throughout Chicagoland over the
years and recently re-released their 25th
anniversary edition “Opening Night” Andrew
Lloyd Webber selection album via
CDs, downloads and streams.
Looking back, the album’s success was
enhanced due to their many appearances
with The Franz Benteler Royal Strings
Orchestra, but did you know that this
couple has been hosting travel tours for
almost 25 years, as well?
Yes, motorcoach travel trips to destinations
near and far. With each trip, their
“family” of followers continues to grow.
They adopted the name of St. Christopher
Tours invoking the blessing of the patron
saint of travelers. Did you have a St.
Christopher statue or medallion on your
dashboard? Their motto is, “Like Family,
we visit authentic America.” Instead
though, of piling into your family vehicle
you board a deluxe motorcoach for a one
or multi-day excursion to a fabulous destination.
Phil and Amy trips are so well planned
for your absolute comfort and enjoyment
that it is like being a kid again, when mom
and dad took care of all the details and
you, carefree, just went along for the fun.
Call and inquire on traveling with them to
Yellowstone, Mackinac Island, Frankenmuth,
retire
From Page 9
“I learned about marketing,
but I learned a lot
more about people — what
kindness can do in the
world,” Vanek said. “I witnessed
how growing older
can be wonderful with
the support of family and
friends.”
In addition to answering
a busy telephone in the
main lobby on weekday
mornings, Vanek supervised
the duties of 11 receptionists
covering Smith
Crossing’s entire phone
system from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.,
seven days a week.
“Because we are front
and center for residents
too, we listen to their
concerns and put them in
touch with staff who could
help,” she said. “We relayed
lots of good news,
like a special package or
new furniture has just been
delivered. We’d see their
faces light up when they
greeted family members
and friends.”
Vanek kept meticulous
daily census records indicating
residents’ absences,
due to travel, medical procedures
and snowbird residency
in other states. She
also tracked their progression
through the lifestyle
settings. She recalls a tipping
point in 2007, when
Smith Crossing achieved a
population of 90 independent
living residents and a
waiting list of 30 prospective
residents.
Not long after, plans solidified
for a $37 million
expansion that would include
a larger fitness center,
physical therapy gym
and library, as well as the
additions of a movie theater,
game room — plus
90 additional apartments.
Today, Smith Crossing is
home to 300 residents.
After the new wings
opened in January of 2013,
it became clear to Vanek
and others that the foundation
of Smith Crossing as a
community was firmly set.
“Many of the first residents
still live here,” she
said. “And while their
closeness remains, they
welcome new residents and
staff. We’ve just become a
much bigger family.”
Laurie Maurisak, former
lead receptionist for assisted
living and healthcare
wings, assumed Vanek’s
responsibilities along with
Alex Tarr, admissions director
at Smith Crossing.
Just like Vanek, Maurisak
and Tarr said they enjoy
making people smile.
“Among the most important
traits we look for
in all people who work
here is caring, compassion
and patience,” said Frank
Guajardo, executive director
for Smith Crossing.
“Georgia set our gold standard
for all of those qualities.
We will miss her.”
About Smith Crossing
Smith Crossing is one of
only 10 life-plan communities
in Illinois awarded a
five-year accreditation for
“exemplary conformance”
to international standards
set by CARF-CCAC, the
industry’s sole accrediting
body.
Sponsored by Smith
Senior Living, a not-forprofit
Wearing hearing aids reduces risk of cognitive decline
Made for an
Invisible Fit
Hearing loss has been linked to a
number of health concerns in recent
years, especially to cognitive decline,
dementia and Alzheimer’s, according to
Jonathan Wright, a specialist at South
Suburban Hearing Health Center’s
Homer Glen and Burr Ridge offices.
“Adults with hearing loss are two-tofive
times more likely to develop dementia
when compared to adults with
normal hearing,” Wright said.
A recent study by Columbia University
Medical Center has found a direct
correlation between hearing aid use and
cognitive performance in older adults
aged 80 to 99 with hearing loss. The
study also indicates older adults with
hearing loss who used hearing aids performed
significantly better on cognitive
tests than those who did not use a hearing
aid.
The goal of the study was to determine
if hearing aids could slow the effects
of aging on cognitive function.
“Our study suggests that using a hearing
aid may offer a simple, yet important,
way to prevent or slow the development
of dementia by keeping adults
with hearing loss engaged in conversation
and communication,” said Dr. Anil
K. Lawlwani, professor of otolaryngology/head
and neck surgery at CUMC
and otolaryngologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/CUMC
and NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan
Stanley Children’s Hospital,
about their findings.
CUMC’s study further supports the
notion that hearing loss impacts neurological
elements as we age. In 2014,
researchers at Johns Hopkins and the
National Institute on Aging used information
from the ongoing Baltimore
Longitudinal Study of Aging to look at
the differences in brain changes between
adults with normal hearing and adults
with hearing loss. Analysis of the participants’
MRIs over the years showed
that participants with hearing loss had
accelerated rates of brain atrophy compared
to those with normal hearing.
“Overall, the scientists report, those
with impaired hearing lost more than an
additional cubic centimeter of brain tissue
each year compared with those with
normal hearing,” Wright said. “Those
with impaired hearing also had significantly
more shrinkage in particular regions,
including the superior, middle
and inferior temporal gyri, brain structures
responsible for processing sound
and speech.
“With all of the new information we
have on the impact hearing loss has on
the brain and the individual’s quality
of life, it’s now more important than
ever to take action. Hearing loss is not
uncommon today, and in older adults,
hearing health is key.”
Rehab at Victorian
Village helps you
get back to your life
for Active Seniors
Anyone walking
through Victorian Village
in Homer Glen can see the
emphasis on active living,
but in no place in the community
is that more evident
than in Small House
rehabilitation.
After an extended hospital
stay following an injury,
people are longing for
home, but often need further
rehabilitation. Dave
Tiemersma, Executive
Director at Victorian Village,
said that a rehabilitation
stay can still feel like
home — and best of all,
it can help you get back
to your home and back to
your active life.
Victorian Village partners
with Marianjoy Rehabilitation,
a widely
recognized leader in rehabilitative
care, to offer
the most innovative techniques
to get everyone in
the shape they need to get
back to the highest level of
independence possible for
each individual.
The Small House concept
at Victorian Village
was the first of its kind in
Illinois. All residents have
their own bedrooms and
bathrooms, and they share
an open dining area, kitchen
and other common areas,
complete with porches
and a spa.
Instead of having to
navigate long hallways,
all the common areas are
mere steps away from the
bedrooms. The expansive
living room allows for activities
and visits. Loved
ones can enjoy a meal with
residents and later sit and
chat by the fireplace.
While the beds throughout
the Small Houses are
certified by Medicare, this
two-story, 30 bed Small
House is specifically designed
for rehabilitation.
Clients have therapy for
about an hour a day, and
they can utilize the rehab
gym, but they can also
practice occupational therapy
in a setting that looks
and feels like home.
In addition to therapists,
Providence’s Care Partners
help residents with
activities of daily life as
needed, such as getting
dressed, doing laundry or
just discussing the day’s
plans.
“Having 30 beds means
a relatively small program,”
Tiemersma said.
“So that means more individual
attention, and we
strive for high hospitality.”
In addition to rehabilitation
exercises, residents
also take advantage of the
numerous activities the
Life Enrichment staff plan
for the community.
Tiemersma said the inhome
activities the Life
Enrichment staff offers
give residents opportunities
to enjoy themselves
beyond the rehabilitation
exercises.
“We have something for
everyone,” he said. “There
are so many ways to get
active.”
Victorian Village’s
Health & Wellness Center
is accredited by the Joint
Commission.
Rehab is just a small
part of the living options
available on campus. Victorian
Village offers a full
continuum of care, including
townhouse living, retirement
living, assisted
living, memory care and
skilled nursing care.
