Reserves: Season starts today for City’s second team Bradford City’s reserves shake hands with Sheffield United before their 3-1 win. Bradford City’s reserves kick off their new season this afternoon, taking on last year’s FA Women’s Premier League Reserve Northern Division champions, Blackburn Rovers. The team has a complete new look to it this year, with coaches Toni Butcher, 20, and Meg Lawson, 21, taking on a team that has inherited most of last year’s under-18 squad. Eleven of those signed on for the team are teenagers, while none of the squad are aged over 23 going into today’s clash. But their opposition too will be a young side, with Rovers known for fielding a youthful reserve team with huge success—winning the league last year and coming runners-up in the cup. The Bantams go into the game on a run of three straight wins, having closed out their pre-season schedule in style. After losing their opening friendly at Durham, City fought out 4-4 draws with both Castleford White Rose and Barnsley, coming from behind to do so in each game. They then secured their first win at Sheffield United, before beating Leeds United and Brighouse Athletic ahead of today’s trip to Lancashire. “I’m very excited to see what this season holds,” Butcher said this week. “The balance we have with experience and youth is really starting to gel and the players are all working well together.” Lawson added: “It’s all come together at the right time and we are confident of a positive start to the season.” Read the full interview with both coaches online at bcwfc.co.uk, and follow @BCWFC on Twitter for updates of their game today.
