SchoolCare have always been at the forefront of new technology
for the education market. Over 35 years SchoolCare’s experienced
staff have been helping schools realise their potential through the
use of technology.
TECHNOLOGY has always been a passion
of mine. From an early age I was always
interested in anything electronic and
generally more interested in taking it apart.
Since joining the SchoolCare team in 2004, I
have always been amazed by the company’s
motivation to embrace new technologies
and explore how they can be used in the
classroom.
Since taking on the role of Managing Director
my drive has been to exploit my passion
for technology further and working wit h
a team of like minded individuals propel
the company forward by exploring new
technologies.
SchoolCare have accumulated a wealth of
knowledge and experience from working
in the education sector for 35 years and
has worked hard to build a team who
have amassed an equally large amount of
knowledge and experience in a number of
industry verticals before joining our team.

Protecting Schools
In recent Ofsted inspections, schools are
being assessed not only on their values,
abilities and results from the pupils,
but also on their premises security and
physical safeguarding measures.
This is becoming more prevalent- search
recent online media reports - so it is surely
a matter of time before Ofsted mandate
physical security, closed circuit television
and emergency contingency systems as
formally assessable criteria.
Inspectors will be looking at a regime for the entire
site, with protocols for pupils, staff and visitors;
emergency procedures to be implemented in
the event of a threat to pupil and staff safety;
location integrity within the site to secure sensitive
areas; and protocols in the event of extenuating
circumstances beyond “normal” control.
Budgetary constraints will affect the ability
for schools to fulfil many of the forthcoming
requirements using typical legacy solutions.

Principle
The principle of 360 Safety has been developed by SchoolCare and focusses
on how safety key technologies can be deployed cost effectively
and integrated together to ensure the safety of staff and students
360 DEGREE SAFETY is based on 4 key
safety principles. Observe, Control,
Communicate and Register all of
which have been developed directly with
schools to compliment and enhance their
emergency procedures and protocols.
Schools are now having to consider their
current security and safety policies and
ensure provisions cater for the ever changing
social landscape.
Given the current social concerns
surrounding extremism and terrorism it is
not possible to categorise any area more
risky than another, therefore it is widely
expected that a minimum level of security
will be mandated by Ofsted.
Making provision for a terror attack or other
major incident is not longer a paper exercise.
Schools are having to actively practice lodo-down
drills and ensure their procedures
are robust and reliable.
In order to implement and effective security
policy, schools need to have a number of
tools at their disposal, all of which are based
on the 4 key principles of 360 Degree Safety.
Observe - Know who and what is around
you, by recording and monitoring the
environment .
Control - Ensure the environment is secure,
without impeding access for appropriate
individuals.
Currently, on a primary level, Ofsted
inspectors need your school to demonstrate
it has taken reasonable steps to make sure
pupils are safe on the school site. This
will include the monitoring of visitors or
volunteers, as well as having satisfactory
security arrangements for the school to
protect and monitor teachers and students
alike from a safeguarding perspective.
Communicate - Enure systems are in place
to quickly and effectively communicate
messages to groups of people as a whole
Register - Know who is in the building at all
times and ensure they remain visible to staff
and pupils whilst onsite.

Over the last 5 years schools have invested
heavily in structured cabling infrastructures,
mainly to deliver a wealth of ICT Services,
such as WiFi and Desktop Connectivity.
SchoolCare has been at the forefront of the
deployment of such infrastructures over the
years and are now pioneering a “360 degree”.

Principle 1 - Observe
KNOWING what is going on around you is the first
stop on the journey of 360 degree safety. Even today,
very few schools have CCTV solutions in place.
Those that do are traditional analogue systems
which operate at a low resolution. They do offer
a good deterrent to an opportunist, however the
low resolution of the cameras makes them largely
ineffective in identifying individuals should the
need arise.
In recent years HD CCTV systems have some to the
market, with newer solutions supporting Ultra HD
(4K). The benefit of these high resolution systems
is that the level of detail is massively increased,
meaning that zooming in on an image to identify
even the minutest detail is now possible.

Legacy CCTV solutions typically operate at
either CIF or D1 resolution, so the jump to
1080p represents a huge increase in the level of
captured detail.
SchoolCare specialise in Network (IP) based
CCTV solutions, which integrate seamlessly
with the school’s existing structured cabling
infrastructure meaning that the cost of
deployment is drastically reduced. This
reduction in capital outlay is very important in
times where school’s budgets are limited.
SchoolCare offers a huge range of CCTV
cameras, which can be installed inside or
outside a school premises, with models which
range from unobtrusive “covert” style cameras
to Pan, Tilt, Zoom cameras with 30x Optical
Zoom.
The heart of any CCTV solution is the Network
Video Recorder (NVR), these are designed to be
securely installed in either a coms room or a
store cupboard, ensuring that recorded footage
remains secure, SchoolCare can also offer cloud
storage options for our Broadband4 customers,
with footage being securely stored off-site.
Access to live and recorded footage can be from
any suitable desktop PC, or mobile device, both
on and off the school network. Remote access is
particularly useful for site managers who need
to keep an eye on premises over the school
holidays, or for those who monitor multi sites in
an academy trust.

Principle 2 - Control
BEING ABLE to secure the school building,
whilst allowing easy freedom of movement
for staff and students is very important.
Locking doors with traditional lock and
key, just isn’t feasible, both from a logistical
and safety perspective. These challenges
typically mean that doors to high traffic
areas are typically left unlocked or propped
open for convenience.
Access control solutions are nothing
new and have been around for a long
while. Most solutions deployed today are
standalone systems which function on their
own infrastructures. This vastly increases
the cost and complexity of installation as
well as ongoing maintenance. Standalone
systems typically have to be programmed
individually, meaning that is a new badge or
tag needs to be “coded in” or “coded out”,
these changes have to be made on each
door the user should have access to.
The problem of complexity extends further
in today’s Multi Academy Trust model. Staff
often require access through multiple doors
on multiple sites making the deployment
of standalone solutions impractical. Multi
Academy trusts typically have a single site
team responsible for multiple sites, being
able to manage multiple sites from a single
location is hugely important.

A Paxton Access Control solution can
be centrally administered ensuring that
individuals or groups of individuals
can be quickly granted access to single
doors or groups of doors on a single site,
conversely access can be instantly revoked
as required, all from
a single location,
by an appropriately
authorised individual.
Being network
based opens up
the world of cross
platform integration, meaning that Access
Control Systems can be integrated with
CCTV systems (e.g. CCTV footage of a front
door camera can be stamped for ease of
recall) and visitor management solutions.
Cards and fobs used with access control
platforms can also be used to recall print
jobs from Multi Function Devices etc.
SchoolCare can design and install both
single site and multi site Access control
solutions, which include intercom and
door phone solutions, as well as magnetic
lock and automatic door triggering. Our
experienced designers and installers will
visit your site and work with you to design
a solution to meet your needs. All our
solutions are also expandable, meaning that
a simple front door solution can be easily
expanded to relevant internal doors to fully
extend the system.

Ofsted’s requirements for emergency
contingency planning is starting to mandate
the need for schools to implement and
practice a lock-down procedure. A partial or
full lock-down can be triggered for external
disturbances or pollution alerts as well as
a disturbance within the building such as a
potential incursion by an armed individual.

SchoolSafe is a unique IP Based public address system which has
been designed from the ground up by SchoolCare to address
challenges in today’s challenging social landscape
AS MUCH as the thought of an incursion by
an armed individual is something no person
wants to consider, the ever changing social
landscape is proving that this is a very real
threat and so the need to have a robust
emergency plan as well as practicing it has
never been more important.
Being able to convey a message quickly and
effectively across all areas of a school site is
very important, the messages needs to be
clear and calm convey the correct message
to all concerned. To children this will be
the message to return to your classroom
or designated safe area and to staff it is the
signal to execute the emergency plan.
SchoolCare acknowledge that a product
such as SchoolSafe is not something which
schools may have previously considered
and therefore budgeted. SchoolCare have
developed the SchoolSafe product to be
as cost effective as possible and have built
in as much value as possible in terms of
functionality.
SchoolSafe is a completely IP based Public
Address system which is fully configurable
to the needs of schools large and small.
Traditional PA systems require a huge
infrastructure of cabling as well as amplifiers
all in all which make a whole school PA
system deployment very expensive. Whilst
you do find Public Address being provided
as part of new build school infrastructure,
the cost to deploy in an existing school is
cost prohibitive.

Principle 4 - Register
THE VISITOR SIGN IN book has long been
a staple of the front reception desk, where
visitors dutifully sign in when they arrive
on site using intelligible handwriting and
generally forget to sign out when they leave.
This signing in book has typically been the
only way for schools to account for visitors
on-site, something which is especially
important when it comes to the need for a
fire evacuation.
SchoolCare are strategically partnered
with InVentry who offer a complete visitor
management system. Visitor management
forms an important quadrant of the 360
Degree Safety solution as it ensures that
schools can easily account for visitors which
are on-site.
InVentry is a completely IP based solution
which interfaces directly with both Access
Control Systems such as Paxton as well as a
Schools MIS Solution such as SIMS.

to the schools existing wired network and

attendance data. The time and attendance
data can be passed in real time to the
school’s MIS platform (e.g. SIMS). This is
a particularly good way of tracking and
logging both staff and student’s attendance
data.
For visitor management InVentry allows
important information about all visitors to
be recorded, including personal information
such as name and company, as well as
allowing visitors to be attributed to an
internal “sponsor” to ensure accountability
for the visitor is maintained. The sign
in process is simple and captures a
user configurable dataset including a
photograph. Visitors can also be asked to
read and agree to safeguarding and other
relevant policies to ensure full compliance.
Once signed in the visitor is supplied with a
self-adhesive sticker, negating the need forexpensive
pre-printed Visitor badges which
are often not returned at the end of the visit.
To sign out the visitor just scans the bar code
on their label before disposing of it.
