Silent Night in Wagrain-Kleinarl

Wagrain-Kleinarl – where Christmastime still radiates 

its own unique charm. “Silent Night!” – a song that 

unites Wagrain with the whole world. The messages 

of peace penned by lyricist Joseph Mohr are very 

much at the heart of “Silent Night Wagrain-Kleinarl”, 

a cultural project that embraces traditions as well as 

the world at large. Together with guest countries, the 

Wagrain-Kleinarl region celebrates Christmastime 

with typical folk customs and cultural events.

Silent night! Holy night! 

All are sleeping, alone and awake

Christmastime in Wagrain-Kleinarl 

Tradition and folk heritage are important components of all events 

in Wagrain-Kleinarl. Guests have the unique opportunity to get to 

know and participate in old traditions. 

Advent of Cultures 

Christmastime in Wagrain-Kleinarl is both reflective and festive. 

Wagrain, home of Joseph Mohr, the man who wrote the words to 

“Silent Night!”, unites a commitment to the nurturing of regional 

customs with an embrace of cultural exchange: “Silent Night” 

events are enhanced by artistic and culinary contributions from 

guest countries. This year, we look forward to greeting our special 

guests from Sweden from the 08. - 10. December. 

St. Nicholas 

A truly special Nicholas tradition, a romantic Advent market and 

the opportunity to celebrate the high holy days together: Kleinarl 

celebrates Christmastime with typical religious and secular 

customs that are seemingly an indispensable part of life in this 

community – which in turn grants guests deep insights into the 

very soul of this holiday region. 

„Silent Night“ Exhibition 

School children from Joseph Mohr Elementary and Karl Heinrich 

Waggerl Middle School in Wagrain create wonderful drawings and 

creative pieces based on the “Silent Night” theme. Their works 

can be admired at Raiffeisenbank Wagrain and in the windows of 

the gymnasium in the Kirchboden section of Wagrain.

Highlights of the Advent Program 

The Wagrain Wishing Linden 

A magical sight: Lit up by illuminated whicker decorations, 

Wagrain’s market linden tree becomes the spot where Christmas 

wishes, big and small, are carefully placed in expectation of the 

impending arrival of the Christ Child. 

Children´s Bakery 

While the grown-ups saunter through the Wagrain Christmas 

market, the youngsters are proud to work hard and lend the Christ 

Child a hand: In the children’s bakery, dough is turned by little 

hands into true works of art. After they are baked, the fragrant 

cookies are packed up to be enjoyed with everyone at home.

The new museum explores questions about the meaning and 

impact of the song. Together you explore the music and follow the 

worldwide distribution of „Silent Night!“.

Waggerl Haus Wagrain 

Karl Heinrich Waggerl is one of the most renowned Austrian 

writers of the twentieth century. The museum contains the original 

living-room and study interiors, Waggerl’s literary works, his 

photographs and artisanal objects.

SUNDAY, 03 DECEMBER 2017 

Opening of the Silent Night Museum in the Pflegerschlössl 

11 am 

Wagrain has a new museum! Close to the Karl Heinrich Waggerl Haus 

the new museum concentrates on Joseph Mohr, the former vicar of 

Wagrain who created the lyrics of the popular song Silent Night. The 

Pflegerschlössl, an architectural jewel in the baroque style, has been 

carefully restored, barrier-free and including a modern event center. 

Christmas Market & Children‘s Bakery 

Pflegerschlössl 

11 am-6 pm 

Today, Saint Nicholas visits the Christmas market, his sack filled with 

goodies for the expectant children. Adults can look forward to delicious 

foods from our farmhouse kitchens, homemade punch and great gift 

ideas from local craftsmen- and women. The kids even get to bake their 

own cookies in the children’s bakery. 

MONDAY, 4 DECEMBER 2017 

Traditional singing to mark the anniversary of Joseph Mohr’s death 

Next to the Joseph Mohr grave outside Wagrain Parish Church

To mark the day that Joseph Mohr passed away, pupils from Joseph 

Mohr Elementary School sing at his graveside.

Enjoy a tranquil evening with a horse-drawn sleigh ride, a torchlight hike 

and a thoughtful reading with traditional music 


Saint Nicholas’ Day in Kleinarl 

4 pm 

Kleinarl practices a very special tradition on Saint Nicholas’ Day. Saint 

Nicholas and his dark companions, the “Krampusse”, visit all families in 

the village. Saint Nicholas is certain to reward everyone for waiting 

patiently.

6 am, Kleinarl Parish Church 

Sleigh ride & torchlight hike with reading & folk music 

Meeting point at Café Olympia in Kleinarl 

4-8.30 pm 

€ 15 per person (children up to age 3 free) 

We will meet in Kleinarl at Café Olympia at 4 pm, where the horse-drawn 

sleigh will already be waiting for us. Snuggly wrapped up in warm 

blankets, we will glide through the idyllic winter countryside of 

Wagrain-Kleinarl. Our eyes will roam across a picturesque and mighty 

mountain scenery and broad fields of snow. After approximately 20 

minutes, we will leave our carriage and hike by torchlight for another 10 

minutes to the Waldstüberl in Kleinarl. Once there, we will enjoy 

refreshments and warm ourselves up with a mug of “Hunt Tea”. 

Landsteg Ischi will read Christmas texts by Karl Heinrich Waggerl, 

accompanied by gentle folk music. We will then return by taxi to our 

original starting point at around 8.30 pm. Please register in advance

“Gang durch den Advent” 

6 pm, Meets at the Öbrist-bridge in Kleinarl 

Group-hike to lake Jägersee. Religious traditions are of great importance 

in Kleinarl, due to the commitment of countless volunteer helpers. 

Devotion at the Jägersee will be held at 6.30 pm, accompanied by live 

music. Concludes with a cozy get-together at Gasthof Jägersee. 

Meeting point at 6 pm at the “Öbristbrücke” in Kleinarl. 

“Naschmarkt” at the Kirchboden 

6-9.30 pm, Next to Wagrain Parish Church 

At this market you can taste culinary Christmas treats from Sweden. 

Concert of Cultures 

Parish Church Wagrain 

8-9 pm 

In the Swedish village Rydebäck gospel songs sound through the church 

since 1995. The Church Choir brings this special Christmas expectations 

to Wagrain-Kleinarl.

Christmas Post Office 


2-6 pm 

It isn’t just philatelists who take advantage of the opportunity to send 

Christmas letters bearing the special “Silent Night Wagrain” Christmas 

stamp. On this day, when the Pflegerschlössl is turned into a Christmas 

post office, practically everyone from Wagrain shows up. The ideal 

possibility to visit the newly opened Silent Night Museum in the 

Pflegerschlössl.

Christmas Market of Cultures 


3-7 pm 

According to the spirit of silent night, this Christmas market represents a 

colourful encounter between regional foods and crafts from Wagrain as 

well as this year’s guest country Sweden. Children even get to bake their 

own cookies in the children’s bakery. 


Advent Mass of Cultures 

Parish Church Wagrain 

08.30 am 

The Rydebäck Gospel Choir will join the festive advent mass. The songs 

combine the Swedish tradition and the modern world, but always show 

the love of the Almighty and his word 

Reading and folk music at the Kogelalm 

Kogelalm Grießenkareck in Wagrain (Flying Mozart top station) 

11 am-4 pm 

Lunch, ride up and down the lift, side program: € 25 per person. 

Lunch, lift rides not included, side program: € 15 per person. 

High on the mountain at the Kogelalm, holidaymakers and locals enjoy a 

cosy lunch together while listening to reflective texts, penned by author 

Karl Heinrich Waggerl (read by Landsteg Ischi). Musical accompaniment 

is provided by “Tennkoglmusi”.Tickets are available through Wagrain- 

Kleinarl Tourismus as well as on the day of the event at the Flying 

Mozart.

sacred hermits of course but simply because living life here is something 

you must set aside time for.“ After a guided tour through the Waggerl

cookies and punch.

Hot Spiced wine, children’s punch and hot sausages keep you nice and 

warm as you stroll from one market stand to the next. Program highlights 

such as Christmas brass music and children performing Christmas 

carols and readings provide the festive backdrop. This Christmas market 

offers delicious farmhouse favorites, traditional arts & crafts and other 

gift ideas, all for a good cause. Proceeds from crafts sold at the 

ClownDoctors booth go to the charity of the same name.
