The Ned
A new central London luxury hotel, The Ned,
pictured, opened in April 2017. A former
Midland Bank, the Grade I listed, II-storey
five star Hotel has 252 rooms, nine restaurants,
six private events spaces, spa, gym and a
members’ club. Since opening the security staff
onsite have manually tracked keys, working at
midnight each night to sign in keys from staff
members and track and replace any missing
items or equipment, with each one accounted
for by a handwritten list. After a site visit to
Claridges, where Traka is already installed,
The Ned decided on
an automated key
management system
initially for up to
300 keys, including
for bedroom master
keys. Alongside
management, the
solution offers audit
control capability
and instant reports,
including notifications
when keys were
not returned. Nick
Mackenzie, Head of
Safety and Security at
The Ned Hotel, says: “Hotel key management
is of critical importance for the smooth running
and also safety and security of all who stay
and work here. Completing manual audits
is not only time consuming, but relies on
neat handwriting to ensure awareness of key
allocations and traceability. The implementation
of Traka’s system has automated the complete
process. Not only does it effectively remove
the margin for human error, but also means
we can make huge labour savings and redirect
resources. So impressed, we are already
looking to expand our use of Traka for other
parts of the hotel, including management of the
Gym and exclusive ‘The Vault’ members’ keys.”
Salford City Council
From its central control room in Swinton,
Salford City Council’s CCTV monitors
120 cameras across the city, 24 hours. Its
incident management software logs all video
footage, associated data and system activity
in a temporary repository where it is SHA-2
encrypted and transferred to a secure evidence
locker. During and after an ‘incident’ operators
can add notes to the footage stored which,
should the incident span multiple shifts,
ensures continuity between operators. David
Lancaster, lead member for environment
and community safety for Salford, says:
“Proactively monitoring activity, and being
able to help the police to respond to incidents
as efficiently as possible is a challenge in such
a busy city. You simply have to have the right
control system in place to prioritise public
safety. For us, Synectics’ Synergy platform
was that system. Since implementing it in
2009 we had always found it easy to use
and we’d never have any outage problems at
all. So when we learned about the enhanced
capabilities offered by Synergy 3, particularly
in relation to third-party integration and
evidence management, we could immediately
see opportunities for improving public service,
while continuing with a solution we knew very
well and trusted. In 2015 we made the decision
to upgrade and haven’t looked back.” Besides
legacy analogue cameras, Darkfighters from
Hikvision are in use.
Business Parks
The Metropolitan Police have praised quality
of CCTV used at some London business
parks. Police in Kingston-upon-Thames were
impressed by the full resolution recording
and remote monitoring achieved by Unit
Management Ltd, the managing agent for a
dozen business centres along the A3 corridor.
Facilities manager Alex Brewer said highres
imagery was sharp enough even at night
for full facial recognition. “We have even
monitored an incursion of gypsies at our New
Malden site while we were down in Devon.”
Unit Management has been working with
security software firm EyeLynx Ltd for the
past five years and is upgrading all its sites
with EyeLynx’s SharpView CCTV products.
EyeLynx co-founder Jay Patel said: “Unit
Management has successfully implemented
many of the features of SharpView, including
video analytics, PIR alarms and the use of
radar.” Police recently made arrests from
camera footage when an intruder broke
through the perimeter fence at Trident Court
in Chessington, where EyeLynx’s EPR-500
radar is also in use. Mr Brewer said: “We’re
able to track people on foot and identify people
breaking in through the perimeter fence, and
even watch people dodging between cars and
buildings, all remotely.” The latest installations
are at Eurolink in Brixton and Kingspark
Business Centre, New Malden, while Mr
Brewer is about to commission additions to
Battersea Business Centre, Lavender Hill.
A children’s shoemaker has renewed its contract
with a digital forensics firm. Start-rite will be using
Foregenix’s eCommerce threat detection product FGX-
Web. The cyber firm says that its software’s designed
to ‘bake’ security into e-commerce websites to protect
them from online crime. The software supports all
of the most popular ecommerce platforms such as
Magento, Drupal and OS Commerce. Specialist threat
intelligence staff support clients and manage threats
that FGX-Web identifies. The cyber firm will also advise on best cyber security practice to deter
cyber criminals. Foregenix’s own recent research based on 60,000 e-commerce websites, found
that most, 78pc, are vulnerable to cyber criminals, with the main reason for poor security identified
as businesses failing to take even basic precautions such as updating software. Claire Knight, Head
of Ecommerce at Start-rite Shoes, said: “The proactive hands-on approach of Foregenix means we
know that we have specialists dealing with our cyber security 24-7. We feel we’re in safe hands
and parents can be reassured their data is safe as they buy footwear for the new school year.” Other
users of the cyber firm include the Premier League football club West Ham United. The cyber
firm also offers payment card industry standard (PCI) and other compliance services, and risk
assessment.
SGN, a UK gas distribution network company,
has chosen software from CA to secure its
cloud infrastructure. SGN distributes to
Scotland, the South of England and part
of Northern Ireland. Mo Ahddoud, Chief
Information Security Officer at SGN, says:
“Security is a vital aspect of our innovation
strategy and CA Technologies is the ideal
partner to deliver complete protection.” SGN
has standardised on CA Privileged Access
Manager to protect the applications and data
on the company’s cloud, running on Amazon
Web Services (AWS). That’s providing the
right access to the right resources at the right
time; and if necessary, monitoring access to
prevent privilege abuse. Role-based privileged
access control and federated access control
protect credentials, authenticating users and
controlling IT use to prevent policy violations.
