Architectural spaces are anchors for our memory. We
find our place in the room by means of our sensory
perception; the brain makes use of surfaces and spatial
systems in order to store and organize the world
we live in. The understanding of this principle forms the
basis for the transfer of the results of recent neuroscientific
research to architectural practice, as discussed
in this book.
Neuroarchitecture links neuroscience, perception theory,
and Gestalt psychology, as well as music, art, and
architecture, into a holistic approach that focuses on
the laws of structure formation and the movement of
the individual within the architectural space. Christoph
Metzger, the author of Building for Dementia and Architecture
and Resonance, analyses buildings designed by
Alvar Aalto, Sou Fujimoto, Hugo Häring, Philip Johnson,
Hermann Muthesius, Juhani Pallasmaa, James Stirling,
Frank Lloyd Wright, and Peter Zumthor in the context
of the Amsterdam School of Architecture and their criticism
As a consequence of demographic change, it is increasingly
necessary now and in the future for the architectural
profession to rethink the design of residential
solutions for aging people and especially those with
dementia. With advancing age we are increasingly dependent
on a spatial environment that not only has a
positive effect on us, but also supports our everyday activities
and takes age-related restrictions into account.
A focal point of the new requirements is multisensory
architecture: color and lighting design, sound design,
tactile materials and surfaces, and haptically attractive
forms, creating a spatial atmosphere in which the resident
feels comfortable, providing security and orientation
and fostering motor skills and cognitive abilities.
meets the requirements of people with dementia and
views them as an integral part of society.
In a world in which already more than half of the population
lives in cities and that has seen a digital revolution,
new ideas are needed for the rapidly growing field of
smart cities from a user experience perspective. More
people than ever before will share the same urban infrastructure
in future, leading to a plethora of challenges.
In order to prepare for this, governments around the
world are heavily investing in smart city technologies.
At the same time thought leaders and scholars argue for
a movement towards smart citizens and more participatory
approaches to city making. A frequently overlooked
aspect within the smart city discourse is the design of
the interface between citizens and smart city systems.
In Making Cities Smarter, Martin Tomitsch dedicates
himself to this issue: he translates principles from user
experience design and their application into the urban
environment to tackle challenges that are unique to this
environment, such as designing for a wide range of
uses and users and integrating physical and digital experiences.
The handbook is the first comprehensive pubblication
to unpack the experience design of smart city
applications that focus on the citizens as the end users.
Which cities would we like to live in today and in future?
How have the fear of terrorism and large-scale migration
movements, as well as social disparities, changed our
public spaces? Who is involved in the complex transformations?
Die ambivalente Stadt addresses the increasing fragmentation
of our cities as a reaction to growing political,
economic, and social pressure. The focus is on the
increasing demand for security and monitoring and on
the associated diminishment of freely accessible public
spaces, social mixing, and communal participation. This
is supplemented by the presentation of participative and
self-governed movements that go against these occlusive
tendencies. Furthermore, the role of photography
in urban research is illuminated. The book advocates social
diversity—even in seemingly uncertain times—and
a new relevance of the concept of the Open City.
Events have become a consistent feature of our everyday
life. They are planned professionally, designed with
clever scripting, and convey a sense of exclusivity. The
event concept stands for a specific cross-over area between
economic usage contexts and popular practice
dimensions. Set against this unclear notion, this book
focuses on processes of urban development and the
normative potential of patterns in event production and
reception. On the one hand, urban development and
event production are therefore seen as the drivers of
exclusion processes. On the other hand, eventization
is viewed as an interweaving of production and reception
processes. We all take part more or less actively
in eventization processes and usually also accept them
willingly. The flip side of eventization and the inequalities
that it causes, however, remain mostly invisible. Based
on the example of Zurich, this book examines the question
of how event cultures reorganize and link processes
and practices of social self-understanding.
In the urban centers of Europe, residents are increasingly
demanding not only to participate in the discussion
about the densification of our cities, but also to shape
it actively. It is especially creative planning projects that
succeed in finding new role models and structures for
urban development: artists act as urban developers,
theaters carry out urban projects, curators curate the
city, architects also take on the role of social workers.
This results in new hybrid fields of action that require a
rethinking of established strategies and the constellations
of those involved.
This volume brings together perspectives from quite
different professions at the interface of urban planning
and cultural practice, in order to seek answers to some
central questions: how does this hybridity generate a
contemporary urbanity? How must contemporary institutions
be structured? And how should a new culture
of cooperation be set up to enable a mutual dialog and
transparency in development processes between citizens
and authorities, as well as between the various
stakeholders?

New urbanist fields of work?! Influencing urban development
purposefully and positively can only be accomplished
productively if one goes beyond traditional
disciplinary boundaries. What is required therefore is a
rethinking within urbanist practice.
New Urban Professions—A Journey through Practice
and Theory provides exploratory discussions of phenomena,
reflections and professionalization possibilities
in the various fields of work. In the first section,
a wide variety of practitioners are presented, who try
out suitable development strategies and procedural
approaches. They experiment with professional and
personal competences and reassess the relationship
between creativity and multiple authorship. Theoretical
reflections present a variety of perspectives. Whether,
to what extent, where, and how the emerging necessary
competences can be taught and learnt is also a
decisive factor in the long-term success of collective
urban design of the future. The second part addresses
this topic: what form might a sustainable exchange of
experience take, what curricular consequences would
appear necessary and in what roles, spaces, and spatiotemporal
contexts must one prepare for the coproduction
of the city?
The concepts of metabolism, ecosystems, and circular
economy are currently challenging the discipline of urbanism.
As the shift from linear to circular productionconsumption
patterns seems to be ultimate for reducing
the externalities of our urban environments and to
meet stricter environmental targets, the search for sustainable
territorial metabolism has become imperative
for our metropolitan areas.
This publication questions the European foundation of
urbanism in relation to the challenge of territorial metabolism
and combines theoretical contributions with cutting
edge design proposals for European metropolitan
regions. It synthetizes two years of intensive research
How can dynamic factors and dynamic phenomena outside of metropolitan cores be displayed for debates of
territorial futures? Dynamics of Periphery showcases emerging creative and resilient habitat futures to develop
concepts for metropolitan, urban, and rural networks—with a perspective not on urban margins, but on new
centres for community. The atlas displays integrative process-design, pro-active context-building, and conceptual
narratives as accelerators of change and new concepts in urbanism. These new concepts combine bottom-up
and participatory approaches, the use of territorial capital, and the qualities of liveable spaces into processual and
strategic innovations that cross scales and disciplines. Starting from architecture, urban design, and territorial
planning, this book aims at interfaces between design and research towards dynamic roles of peripheries.
the Metropolitan Region Hamburg, the project aims at regional visions for new rural-urban alliances in a deeply
transforming spatial context. Scenarios and patterns are displayed as accelerators in knowledge and decision
processes linked to the concept of Regiobranding: to combine imagery, economic positioning, identification
processes, and visions of future habitat. In an architectural-spatial approach, explorative scenarios and relational
patters open up design-driven knowledge production for larger spatial strategies and for territorial planning.

Urban river floods, inundations, water shortage, dirty
water, water pollution, or drowning are nothing new for
our urban environments. But is there any other paradigm
to follow but going along with the assumption
water vs. urban? How can the challenge be met to give
more room for water while enhancing the spatial quality
of our urban landscapes?
As early as the nineties, the concept of Integrated
Water Management has gained momentum in urban
design research and practice. Water vs. Urban Scape
presents promising new approaches to integrate water
in the urban landscape through design-based experiences
drawn up for a range of specific socio-spatial
urban landscapes across the world such as the diffuse
urbanisation in the Northeast of Italy and in Flanders,
the booming cities of Shanghai and Istanbul or the expanding
Oslo, the informal urbanisation of Kigali and the
suburbanisation of Perth. In a second part, four visual
essays display possible scenarios of integrated waterurban
Since the 1980s, a new planning culture has evolved
from critical rationalism in the regeneration of towns
and villages. The principles of separation of functions
and expert planning, as well as of total restructuring,
have been superseded by careful renewal and critical
reconstruction—all based on public discourses about
shaping towns and villages and cultivated in informal
framework planning, cooperative competition procedures,
urban forums, and citizens’ appraisals.
Beyond the urban and rural cores, on the other hand,
the development of landscape is still characterized by
functional planning procedures. Land usages and infrastructures
are developed according to principles of priority
areas, taboo and buffer zones, exclusion criteria,
and spacing regulations. Spatial structure concepts are
usually lacking, as well as regional publicness.
The focus of this book is the question of how dialogical
discourses, models, and procedures with regard to
spatial structural qualities can be transferred from town
and village centers to the planning of rural and suburban
areas. The basis for this is a new social agreement on
This atlas of contemporary landscape architecture in
London offers a comprehensive overview of new projects
within public space. Over the past 15 years, major
investments in the infrastructure and housing market
of London have driven the need for high-quality public
spaces. In the course of this development, new public
areas have been created, brownfields have been revitalised,
Landscape Observer: London illustrates these spaces
and their design elements with numerous photographs.
Details of the hard and soft landscape elements are labelled
The dissolution of the “traditional“ artwork as well as the division of labor within the specified and increasingly intersecting fields of art
and architecture makes a reevaluation of the spatial, curatorial, temporal, and institutional aspects of exhibiting necessary. In particular, the
act of exhibiting is currently being shaped more and more by the embrace of a deliberate refusal of temporal and spatial closure, thus also
bringing forth new sites for investigative (dis)play, media manifestations, and crossover collaborations. GAM.14 collects current positions
from the disciplines of art and architecture that address the potentials of sites of exhibiting to act as laboratory spaces in which the urgent
social, political, and ideological challenges of our time can manifest themselves. The volume includes contributions by Ivana Bago, Nicolas
Bourriaud, Ana Devi, Anselm Franke, Andrew Herscher, Tom Holert, Sami Khatib, Wilfried Kühn, Ana Maria Leon, Maria Lind, What, How
ENGLISH / CHINESE
A neighborhood turns car and motorcycle-free. Its residents try out an ecomobile lifestyle: they walk, cycle, use small electric vehicles,
try an autonomous minibus and the new tramway. It so happened in the Hamasen neighborhood in Kaohsiung, second-largest city on
Taiwan. Ecomobility is economical and environmentally friendly. Ecomobility is the prerequisite for a livable city with streets for people,
not cars. But how feels ecomobility like? How do new mobility habits emerge? How do residents experience their quarter free of cars
and motorcycles?
Going Green documents the mise-en-scène in the framework of the EcoMobility World Festival organized by the city of Kaohsiung in partnership
with ICLEI in October 2017. Authors and photographer accompany citizens on their trips through the city before and—then ecomobile—during
the experiment. The publication shows these stories, and thereby conveys the fascination of a new, future urban mobility.

Stuttgart without fine dust, noisy roads, and crammed
car parks. With vibrant neighborhoods, inviting public
spaces, self-determined mobility, and social participation
for all ages. How could such a transformation be
accomplished?
The currently much-debated approach by the Reallabor
research, in combination with the practical example of
the Stuttgart Reallabor für nachhaltige Mobilitätskultur
(real-life laboratory for a sustainable mobility culture) provides
answers to this. The aim of the Stuttgart Reallabor
is the establishment of a mobility culture that is not only
resource-efficient, but also promotes health and physical
exercise, encourages social interaction, and creates
a new quality of life and living in the city and region. The
principle is to gain knowledge through action and communally
designed real-life experiments. To do so, citizens
researched, experimented, and developed ideas, practices,
and visions together with scientists and students.
The book sketches a vibrant picture of the Reallabor
from the perspective of the various project participants,
from its build-up to the co-productive implementation of
real experiments, bringing together theories, methods,
results, experiences, and impressions. In the process,
the city becomes an experimental space with the potential
for new forms of mutual learning and the development
of sustainable transformation processes.
There is a lack of affordable housing especially in major
cities. Displacement processes have made living in the
centers a privilege in many cases. Furthermore, social
changes and a variety of new life models and lifestyles
influence requirements and expectations regarding
modern-day housing.
Housing has for a long time been the subject of political
and social discourses, but can state-subsidized housing
development find the answers to all these challenges?
This book offers a comprehensive overview of the topic:
from the significant models of the 1920s to the contemporary
situation and current concepts. Architectural and
urban development aspects are a focal point, as well as
legal framework conditions, subsidy measures, building
standards, and the parties involved in the building process.
Expert contributions and essays extend and deepen
individual issues and illuminate the topic of housing
from various points of view, a solution to which is so
decisive for the social cohesion of our society.
The conceptual work by the initiative Home not Shelter!
regarding new forms of housing for refugees and students
was followed in summer 2016 by the first realization
in Vienna. Home not Shelter!—primarily a group of
students at the Technical University Vienna—succeeded
in converting part of an office building into a communal
residence that is now run by a social welfare organization.
The project idea that had emerged as an Austrian
contribution to the Architecture Biennial 2016 was taken
up and developed further.
The publication shows the remarkable cooperation of
those involved, from the building owner to the operator,
the involved universities, a foundation, the students
and the refugees, documenting the whole process. The
result is a convincing model project for alternative and
In summer 2016, architecture students at TU Kaiserslautern,
together with refugees, built a community house
that they had previously designed themselves in the regional
reception center Spinelli Barracks in Mannheim.
The refugees, who are condemned to a long period of
passivity after their arrival in Germany, were already integrated
into the planning process and had the opportunity
to contribute to actively shaping their environment.
The community house was intended to create a highquality
venue in the center for shared and individual
uses.
The design, construction, and planning and building process
of the experimental wooden structure are documented
in the publication, as well as the cooperation
between the various public parties involved. The extremely
short project period of six months and the incorporation
of students and refugees in the planning and
construction required a precise allocation of tasks and
The ubiquitous housing congestion in German metropolises
raises the question of how we would or
should live and reside in cities today. However, one
thing is clear: the problem cannot be solved through
large-scale projects alone. We need to consider fair
housing construction for all that does not destroy the
beauty, sustainability, and quality of life of our cities
through densification.
Based on the example of the conversion of the former
Finkenau women’s hospital in Hamburg, this book
shows how a livable city for all can be created. The
focus is on the upTownhouses project, in which the
townhouse that has a long tradition in London, Bremen,
or Hamburg experiences a renaissance. The typology
of the townhouse between a private home and
a multi-floor residential building can provide answers
to the housing question and results in more than a
mere residential or building form. It embodies a decisive
building block of the anthropological city that
is primarily based on the requirements of people and
therefore represents a new metropolitan residential
world in the twenty-first century.
A Europe without churches—hardly imaginable, but
no longer completely absurd. In rural areas, as well as
in the urban fabric, church buildings are still common;
yet the membership numbers of Christian denominations
are shrinking steadily. The Central German state
of Thuringia represents an example of this development:
of its 2,000 church buildings, 500 stand vacant.
However, churches are not just places of worship: they
are prototypes of public buildings, thus collective action
is required to maintain church buildings as cultural
assets and sites of community. On the occasion of
the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the project
“StadtLand:Kirche—Querdenker in Thuringia 2017”—a
joint initiative of the IBA Thuringia and the Evangelical
Church in Central Germany—has collected 500 ideas for
dealing with church vacancies.
The publication documents the project and presents the
new use proposals as well as the first realization results.
and architectural dimensions. The result is a pool of
Based on best-practice examples in American cities
such as Detroit, New York, or Pittsburgh, this book
shows successful cases of adaptive reuse that preserve
the legacy of the industrial past while turning it
into a key ingredient for urban regeneration. An aquaponics
farm in a former meatpacking facility or a freight
train railroad converted into a linear park: these are just
two successful examples of the creative and effective
reuse of abandoned industrial infrastructure. Culture,
leisure, sport, research, education, design, services,
production, housing, and even agriculture regenerate
former factory sites and upgrade cities economically
and culturally.
Eight steps guide the way through the process of adaptive
reuse—from choosing an existing site to the vision,
design, and funding, and finally their implementation.
Professionals, activists, decision-makers, as well as
entrepreneurs and committed citizens worldwide are
therefore provided with a practical toolkit to discovering
Cafés, restaurants, and hotels are at the core of the impact
of modernity. With these places of taste and leisure,
new architectural forms were promoted, creating the
perfect setting for the public performance and image
cultivation of urbanites in the emerging metropolises of
the world. At the heart of many urban myths, cafés are
celebrated as intangible sacred halls where works of art
have been produced, revolutions plotted, lives made,
and hearts broken. Cafés serve as background to public
display and sociability. The novel reading of the history
of the hotel offers new insight into the context of
social performance, analyzing the development of tourism
with its urbanization of former natural landscapes.
Paris heralded the emergence of the restaurant. As a
cultural institution it represents the century-old culinary
tradition and as such it is an antidote to the accelerated
consumption of fast food.
By outlining the specific architectural, cultural, and social
spaces that helped forming the modern metropolis,
Franziska Bollerey provides surprising new perspectives
Since opening its shores to the outside world in the late
nineteenth century, Japan has sustained an active relationship
of cultural exchange with the West. Japan's
grand resort hotels, built during the era between the
Restoration of the Meiji Emperor in 1868 until the onset
of war in the late 1930s, are some of the most engaging
and enduring examples of this cross-fertilization. Eager
to champion both its national identity and its status as
a modern nation, Japanese hoteliers looked to adapt
Western hotel standards to the aesthetic and cultural
demands of the Japanese archipelago. With their buildings
they provided glamorous settings in which worldly
Japanese and curious Westerners could mingle. The
grand hotels are romantic hybrids of Beaux Arts grandeur
and Japanese temple and shrine motifs, and offer
the pleasures of both architectural traditions. They straddle
two worlds, being both familiar and exotic to visitors
and locals alike.
Welcoming the West focuses on the history and design
of six of these grand resort hotels: the Nara, the Fujiya,
the Nikko Kanaya, the Fuji View, the Biwako, and the
Gamagori. Built at a pivotal moment when Japan’s architectural
traditions were latent with change and possibility,
they are a manifestation of an unprecedented exchange
of ideas wrought in timber, stone, and concrete.
What lies at the root of Japanese creativity and its architectural
artifacts? In his new book, the Japanese architect
Yuichiro Edagwa explores this question in detail.
By analyzing a wide variety of unique exemplary buildings
from the sixth century to the present, he determines
twelve distinctive characteristics of Japanese
architectural creativity and composition, including: intimacy
with nature, importance of materials, bipolarity
and diversity, asymmetry, devotion to small space, and
organic form. The key understanding, which pervades all
these characteristics, is that “parts precede the whole.”
The Japanese process of creation begins with designing
parts and details and ends with combining them to one
edifice, instead of starting with a whole structure and
working out the components afterwards.
With Japanese Creativity—Contemplations on Japanese
Architecture Edagawa provides a personal and comprehensive
time.
Social and political change, a belief in progress and ideals,
but also fear and uncertainty characterize the time
“between kidney-shaped tables and postmodernity”, as
the architecture critic Wolfgang Kil once aptly described
the 1960s and 70s. The new departure was especially
evident in architecture: a building boom and technical
progress led to a veritable euphoria about the future and
to a willingness to experiment.
In the meantime, however, the buildings and facilities
from that time have proven in many cases to be a burden,
requiring expensive renovation. Forward-looking
solutions are needed for the careful redevelopment and
adaptation of the existing buildings to modern-day requirements.
This is a good enough reason to address,
without prejudice, an architectural heritage that has had
a significant regional impact, but which is often all too
easily dismissed as inferior.
With a comprehensive catalog section and well-founded
contributions about this time characterized by social
and political upheaval, this book raises awareness of the
merits of a creative and daring architecture. The unique
fundamental work is intended to encourage public discussion
and therefore to contribute to appreciating and
preserving the architecture of the 1960s and 70s in
Lower Saxony.
All around the world, new city districts are being realized
that draw on historical typologies and form languages.
In inner cities, new buildings in a historical style
are increasingly replacing established existing buildings,
in order to bring back long-lost historical ensembles or
sought-after images. The phenomenon of retro districts
is complex, with different motivations, constellations of
involved parties and forms of expression. Apart from the
reconstruction of lost buildings, historical structures are
simply copied and placed in a completely new spatial
and socio-cultural context.
This publication examines the phenomenon of historicizing
construction, based on 14 international case studies,
including the Dom-Römer area in Frankfurt, the
Elbing old town in Poland, Hallstatt in China, Poundbury
in England, or the Old Town in Dubai. It presents the
developmental history and status quo of the projects, as
well as the socio-political backgrounds and the debates
sparked by the conflicting interests of those involved.
The Frankfurt old town between Dom and Römer presents
a tense and politically charged construction history
like no other area of the city: starting with the onset of
modernity, when new means of transport required the
forging of roads through the small-scale building developments
of the old town, to the housing development
during the New Frankfurt area, to the almost complete
destruction in the Second World War. The modern reconstruction
plans in the 1950s and 1960s were fraught
with disputes about whether the architecture should be
rebuilt or newly built as modern. In the 1970s, Frankfurt
built the Technical Town Hall and the Historical Museum
in the style of brutalism on Römerberg, followed in the
1980s by postmodern buildings and reconstructions.
Since 2013, other large areas of the historical old town
are being newly developed after the demolition of the
Technical Town Hall.
This book provides an account of the constructional
development of the old town, based on representative
buildings and construction projects. A look at urban developments
in Germany and Europe allow a comparison
of the specific Frankfurt situation. There is a particular
focus on the debate about the pros and cons of old
town reconstruction, as well as its significance for identity
and tradition.
Carl Mühlenpfordt (1878–1944) had already left his
mark on Lübeck before he was appointed by the Braunschweig
Polytechnic in 1914. His reforms turned the
architecture faculty into a well-known educational establishment,
which later caused a stir through his student
network as the “Braunschweig School.” Today the
architect and university teacher is largely unknown. He
had demanded a “New Contemporary Art” for the imperial
era and Weimar Republic with Verve, which went
beyond programmatic Bauhaus, but was led by a belief
in continuity and a will to reform.
This book offers a multilayered contextualization of the
life and work of the architect, illuminating aspects of architectural
and life reform, as well as questions about
the mood among reform architects in the early twentieth
century. The consideration of Mühlenpfordt indicates
the contemporary relevance of his search for identity
in the built environment in current debates about
highlights some of the more significant considerations
that have run parallel with Vassilis Sgoutas’ own steps
in architecture. It also includes a Random Diary, where
the focus is not on what was said or written, but rather
on experiences and thoughts that have emanated
from events related to architects and to architecture.
Although this book is a personal book, it is also a mirror
of the parallel roads of many architects. Through its
pages, glimpses can be caught of the more recent history
of the UIA, a unique professional organisation that
brings together the architects of the world, in pursuit
of common ideals and targets.
Memory is our wealth. Having on record these texts
and events helps rediscover how our priorities have
changed. And how they differ across the globe. In
reading between the lines one will be able to gauge
what has been the legacy of actions, or inaction, and
where architects, as individuals and as a profession,
have had a positive influence on the advancement of
causes. So it is a little more than mere history, it is also
Viewing architecture and urban development from the
perspective of building contractors is a much neglected
topic to date in architectural and art history. If mentioned
at all, they are often even seen as potential adversaries
of the architects, as their actions are allegedly
determined solely by the maximization of returns. Artistic
or social aspects of building therefore supposedly
have no noteworthy importance for them. However, it is
the determined entrepreneurial and often very creative
spirit of the contractors that allows the constructional
realization of architectural ideas for buildings.
In view of this, this book is dedicated to the multifaceted
actions of six selected building contractors who
were active when Berlin flourished to become a world
seek to illuminate their far-reaching, but largely unknown
In the nineteenth century, cities and urban societies
were subject to enormous shifts of power: the founding
of the nation states in Europe, industrialization, and the
increased mobility that went along with them were accompanied
by tremendous social changes. New parties
strove to participate in shaping society, as well as urban
space. New functions not only promoted the physical
expansion of the developing capitals and metropolises,
but also required a new coding of existing urban structures
to meet the changing requirements and expectations
regarding urban life and society.
Recoding the City asks about the intentions and claims
of the protagonists who shaped the city of the nineteenth
century. Under what conditions did they succeed
in inserting themselves into, overwriting or, if necessary,
even rewriting the existing urban structures? Against
the background of the increasing competition between
cities, public space increasingly became a medium that
conveyed meaning, but also a battleground for ideas and
demands. With an overview of international research initiatives,
the authors examine whether and in what way
this recoding of the city in the nineteenth century still
has an influence on our everyday life today.
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Dortmund
is once again a growing city boasting great achievements
with regard to the transformation of its old industrial
areas. In the last two decades, integrative
strategies for industrial structural change and urbanization
have been developed, scarcely rivaled by any other
former European mining region. The renaturation of the
Emscher river landscape—a project of the century—has
already been completed here.
New addresses, districts, and projects have been
springing up in many parts of the city. The city center is
once again being given a new face, after the functional
aberrations of the post-war period. A campaign targeted
towards the developmental potential of districts supports
the approach of upgrading the city as a whole.
As a book about the current and future status, the innovative
strategies of the Dortmund urban development
policy are presented in themed clusters. It illuminates
leading projects and key areas and presents long-term
governance and participation concepts. The insider report
is linked to outside perspectives. Internal and external
involved parties, observers, and authors all have
their say, resulting in a well-founded documentation of
urban development, urbanity, architecture, building culture,
and landscape design in the third-largest city in
North Rhine-Westphalia.

Since the instigating International Building Exhibition
been a pioneer for the transformation of large industrial
areas. The beacon for this process is the disused coal
mine and cokery Zollverein in Essen, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site since 2001. The most significant industrial
monument in Germany is now a tourist attraction, an
economic hub, and at the same time an educational
campus. This success is based on continuous urban
planning that brings together listed existing structures
and new ideas.
The specially developed master plan by Rem Koolhaas
A new art of taking action is intended to activate urban
societies and ensure participation—and is therefore a
matter of political responsibility. This book examines
the conditions and possibilities of these artistically initiated
projects within urban space that are aimed at participation
in shaping the city, thereby bringing together
political activism, social work, and urban planning. It
takes a look at the consequences of this mostly explorative
and experimental urban practice for the creation
of new fields of work for a variety of involved parties
and their self-understanding. Supposed utopias are envisaged
communally in these works and tested in realistic
conditions. Art becomes a collective process, a
shared urban practice. The focus is therefore no longer
on merely dealing with and illustrating topics, but on
widespread action targeted towards change. It is therefore
about action instead of negotiation, about art as
communal urban design.

Altogether six volumes form the monograph of Jun Yang. It is structured alongside key issues
and key projects the artist has worked on over the past eighteen years. Formats, papers, covers,
and even his name change with each volume: from June Young, Yang Jun, Tun Yang, Jan
Jung, Yi Chuan to Jun Yang. Having grown up and lived in different cultural contexts, the artist
has often faced variations of his name in spelling and pronunciation. This has formed the point
of departure not only for this monograph but also for many of his artistic projects, which deal
with naming and questions of identity. Consequently, biographical writing itself becomes a
subject of examination.
VOL. 6: Jun Yang
Swiss softcover with dust jacket
16.2 x 22.9 cm
ca. 80 pages
Volume 4 focuses on Jun Yang’s socio-political projects. They address xenophobia, nationalism,
gentrification, and China’s striving for power in the Southeast Pacific. It also introduces
Yang’s realized and not realized projects in public areas. With text contributions by Claudia
Büttner, Martin Fritz, Holger Kube Ventura, Jeff Leung, Barbara Steiner, Jun Yang.
53 ARCHITECTURE CONTEMPORARY ART ENGLISH
Volume 5 centers on the artist’s personality, alter egos, double and plural identities. With text
contributions by Yuki Okumura, Andreas Spiegl, Barbara Steiner, Jun Yang.
Volume 6 considers various forms of cooperation. Changes in authorship, breaches in identity
construction, reflections on the roles of artist, designer, and editor form the conclusion to the
Monograph Projects. With text contributions by Oliver Klimpel, Barbara Steiner, Jun Yang.
09.2018
With her latest project Grids and Threads, the multiple
award-winning artist Bastienne Schmidt provides a
minimalist meditation on the concept of white space
and it’s perception. It is inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s
“Three Standard Stoppages,” in which three imaginary
measuring devices underline the arbitrariness to qualify
and quantify something. On one hand conceptual
photography is used in a series of created installations,
where the sense of scale becomes a riddle. Objects and
colorful markers are photographed in the snow from a
bird’s eye perspective, using the white environment as
a blank canvas. The installations were built with recycled
fabrics and colored threads. It is a continuation of
Schmidt’s artistic search for concepts of space and systems
that define them. The second part of the project
consists of mixed media works on Arches paper, where
a punched grid of 8 x 8 inches is divided into one square
inch spaces, which draw light and shadow onto the
white paper. The idea of creating a series of a never-ending
variation of white squares in a reductive process is
related to the artistic search of Agnes Martin and Robert
Ryman. The square grid in white is a quiet reflection on
the concept of a minimal space; the variations, of what
happens inside of the squares, play with the thought of
absolute freedom and absolute constraint.
Bastienne Schmidt’s work is included in the collection of
the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the International
Center of Photography, the Brooklyn Museum, the
Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C., and the Victoria
and Albert Museum in London, among others.

What do the questions of the classical modern era
mean to today’s designers, artists, and photographers?
Since 2000, the International Marianne Brandt Contest
in Chemnitz has been asking the world how design debates
that influenced the historical Bauhaus and therefore
also the Chemnitz Bauhaus representative Marianne
Brandt can be made productive today. In 2016, the
topic was “material effects,” asking the question: “How
does material inspire design?”. For the exhibition in the
Chemnitz Industry Museum and for this book, 60 works
by young designers and artists were selected from over
400 submissions from more than 30 countries in the
categories “Experiments”, “Photography” and “Product
designs.” Essays by Sophie Aigner, Chiara Isadora Artico,
Patricio Farrell, Linda Pense, Steffen Reiter, Chiara
Scarpitti, and Andy Scholz incorporate the presented
works into an extensive material discourse.
The sponsor of the competition is the art association Villa
Arte e.V. Chemnitz. The competition is supported by
the Industry Museum Chemnitz, Vitra GmbH and Smow
GmbH, as well as the Cultural Foundation of the Free
State of Saxony and the city of Chemnitz.
› The Marianne Brandt contest
is a unique, internationally
renowned competition in the
“applied arts”
› For the first time, the catalog
of the nominated and
prize-winning works is extended
by further essays on the
competition theme,
Can art in architecture poeticize the character of a building?
Can it transcend the function of a room? And what
effect do pictures, words, or literary texts have on us if
they become a part of our everyday environment?
In her design for the new main building for Sparkasse
Allgäu in Kempten planned by Auer + Weber, the Berlin
artist Brigitte Waldach draws on nature as a landscape
of ideas. History and stories—reflected through literary
texts—are literally inscribed across four floors of
the building. One can read text fragments by Friedrich
Nietzsche, Ingeborg Bachmann, Heiner Müller and Durs
Grünbein on glass dividing walls. In the conference
rooms, on the other hand, prose texts by Peter Handke
form veritable writing clouds—a dense text matrix that
makes it possible to experience the relationship from
the center to the periphery, from inside to outside. By
means of the QR code in the center of the book, one
can also listen to the texts, read by the artist herself.
Brigitte Waldach studied German philology at TU Berlin
and Free Art and Painting at the Berlin University of the
Arts under Georg Baselitz. She became his master student
in 2000. After her studies, she gained international
renown through her works on socially relevant themes.

TOPIC
COOPERATION
Communicating Architecture is a long-term initiative by
the publishing houses Park Books (Zurich) and JOVIS
(Berlin). Together we would like to draw attention to topics
in architecture and urbanism, present them for discussion
and illuminate their significance for our society.
Today, books are more often chosen for the topics they
cover than for the name of the publisher behind them.
We used this circumstance as an opportunity to launch a
completely new form of collaboration and book presentation
at the 2016 Frankfurt Book Fair. Apart from the book
fair, we also cooperate through various initiatives such as
thematic book presentations, events, or newspaper editions.
Our built-up environment is changing constantly. The quality
of these changes does not only concern specialists, but
is also of public interest and is therefore relevant to us
all. However, how can current discussions in architecture
and urbanism reach people? Communicating Architecture
would like to put aside competition and to draw the attention
of a wider public to what our publishing work has
in common—namely an interest in architectural content.
Communicating Architecture is therefore also an opportunity
to show the significance of books for a more comprehensive
architectural debate. Carefully conceived books
are an ideal medium for conveying complex issues and
new ideas, as well as esthetic qualities of architecture,
city planning, and urbanism. At the same time, we hope
that Communicating Architecture will encourage not only
colleagues from the sector, but also interested parties
from a variety of sectors to contribute together to open
discussions and therefore to raise wide public awareness
of architecture and urbanism topics, in the interests of
building culture.
