November 25th
By Judith O’Gara
Holliston will once again
ring in the holiday season in
style with an annual event
townspeople and business
owners alike eagerly await
each year. Saturday, November
25th from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
is the date of the Holliston
Holiday Stroll, organized by
the Holliston Business Association
(HBA) each year
“We try to make it as festive
and as enjoyable and as
entertaining for all the denominations.
It’s for everyone
Holliston VFW Post 8507
Celebrates 70 Years
By J.D. O’Gara
George Snow and Paul Deschenes
are different. They don’t
agree on religion or politics, but
“as far as friendship, I don’t think
it could be any closer,” says Deschenes.
Their connection is the
Holliston VFW Post 8507, an organization
that celebrates its 70th anniversary
in the town this year and
currently has around 65 members,
some of whom have relocated. The
group is looking for new, younger
veterans to join its ranks.
“In our members, there’s no two
alike,” says George Snow, a veteran
of the United States Navy, submarine
services, who was enlisted from
1948 to 1969. “A lot have served at
different times, under different circumstances.
In 21 years, I never saw
actual combat, but there were others
that served two years that wear
the Purple Heart.”
“I consider myself to be one of
the youngest members,” says Deschenes,
who was drafted into the
U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
The VFW, he says, is there to help
the veteran, then the veteran’s family,
and then the community.
“The whole concept of the organization
is to help another veteran
and/or his (or her) family who are
having a tough time, or need just a
little lift me up, and that’s really our
sole purpose,” says Snow.
Snow was the commander of the
post from 1998 through 2009, as
well as for a short time after someone
left, and now’s he’s the chaplain
for the post. George began his
involvement at the national level,
which advocates on that level for
veterans.
“When a person comes out of
the service, they’ve had the camaraderie
and the closeness to their
other military people, and it takes a
lot of adjustment to go from a very
structured way of life to getting out
there and trying to get a job and trying
to find a home for the family, get
a family started, and that is where
the veterans’ organizations such as
VFW
continued from page 1
the VFW comes into play.
We are sort of a platform, it’s
not military structured, but a veteran
can feel at home knowing
that everyone at the table is also
a veteran. It might have been
some years ago, like myself, or
someone just getting out of the
service,” says Snow.
George explains that, although
he’s 87, and a 25-yearold
might not feel comfortable
opening up to him, “that gap is
narrowed considerably by the
fact that, yes, you served. That
sort of is a commonality that is
different … a totally different
way of life, really. (The VFW)
is much more involved in looking
for signs of someone in need,
someone who’s come back from
the service and is having difficulty
coping with day-to-day life
and the things they saw, and the
things they had to do.
“There’s so many things that
can trouble a person, and I think
a veteran can probably recognize
it sooner than a civilian who
has never experienced any of it
or have no way of validating or
understanding what the person is
going through. Veterans support
each other in that regard,” says
Snow.
“The local post is why I’m
involved,” says Deschenes, who
says the group is his primary way
of connecting to others in the
community. “I was not involved
in the VFW back in the heyday.
I came out of the service in the
mid-70s, but didn’t join in Holliston
until 1999.The local post is
here to provide primarily for the
support of veteran who might be
in need locally, in Holliston, and
also to expand that to the community
of Holliston at large.”
Deschenes credits his friend
with keeping him involved in the
VFW.
“Primarily, it was this guy,
but I don’t want to give him too
much credit,” Deschenes jokes,
while grinning at George.
Some of the local support the
veterans give each other is transferring
each other to medical appointments
and helping out with
transporting veterans’ family
members who need it.
PLEASE RECYCLE
THIS NEWSPAPER
“For example,” says Deschenes,
“my wife has MS, and
that came up at a meeting, and
somebody at the meeting said,
do you need a ramp?” That, he
says, was an immediate response
from the guys. George adds
that vets have assisted others for
things like dialysis or financial
need, whatever type of help they
can give.
“We also provide, if the family
so wishes, an honor guard
and calling hours, and a funeral
detail if needed. It’s one thing
we’ve been doing for several
years now in conjunction with
the American Legion. We share
the expense. We present a Bible
to the family for any deceased
veteran,” says Snow. “The families
really appreciate that.”
Back in the day, says Snow,
“The hottest thing in town on a
Saturday night was a ham and
beans supper at the VFW.” He
remembers the VFW sponsoring
youth baseball and “an excellent
drill team.” The VFW also sponsored
Cub Scouts for 52 years,
until the group disbanded. The
camaraderie was rewarding for
him, and “the feeling of having
helped people. I think, for about
10 years straight, maybe 15,
we’d have an annual Christmas
party for the senior citizens. It
was such a wonderful feeling to
see the happiness on the faces
of these elderly people. Some of
them, that was their highlight of
the year. I enjoy is seeing other
people happy, and in some way,
being a part of making that happen.
“We don’t have a hall anymore,
but we still put on an
annual Christmas dinner for
the senior citizens up at the senior
center, sponsored with the
American Legion. We also provide
meals to shut-ins, we usually
have 30-35 people a month we
do this for,” says Snow.
With these veterans doing
so much for the community, it’s
great to honor them not only for
their military but also for their
civic service. This month, the
annual Veterans day luncheon
will take place at Upper Town
Hall, with invitations that go out
by mail. In addition to that, to
celebrate the 70th year of the
post, a 70th Anniversary Dinner
Celebration for members of
the VFW will take place on November
12th at Anthony’s on the
Green.
To join the VFW, a veteran
has to have served overseas during
a period of time declared
war. If you are a veteran who has
served in that capacity, come to
a meeting every third Thursday
at the V.F.W. Post, 310 Woodland
Street in Holliston at 7 p.m.
Newcomers Keep Thanksgiving
Basket Program Alive
Donations Encouraged for Holliston Pantry Shelf Patrons
Every year, The Holliston
Newcomers Club puts together
Thanksgiving baskets for patrons
of the Holliston Food Pantry,
and every year, the need grows.
In 2015, with help from the Holliston
community, the group supplied
163 Thanksgiving boxes to
food pantry patrons, which rose
to 168 last year. This year, they’re
expecting even more.
Local Town Pages spoke with
Holliston Newcomer Lisa Egnitz
about the effort. Egnitz says the
Holliston Pantry Shelf often reminds
the Newcomers that they
wouldn’t be able to handle this
project without their help.
“For our civic duty obligations,
this is the biggest project
we have,” says Egnitz. “It reaches
the most amount of people. We
meet with the food pantry on
this project, and they make it
clear that without the Holliston
Newcomers, they wouldn’t be
able to keep this project alive. It’s
definitely our biggest focus from
a civic duty standpoint.
Aside from a turkey, which
food pantry patrons can purchase
with an enclosed $20 gift
card, each basket contains everything
a family might need for a
full Thanksgiving meal – turkey,
rolls, pie, carrots, potatoes,
squash, gravy, cranberry sauce
and tea to name a few of the
items. The project is made possible
through generous donations
from our community - local businesses
and individuals.
“The Girl Scouts are going
to be helping us out again at the
food drive again this year,” says
Egnitz. “They bring in the goods,
that’s for sure.”
The large number of baskets
requires a big space for organization
and packing. The Newcomers
are very grateful this year to
the Holliston Historical Society
again donating space for basket
packing day. Basket assembly will
take place the morning of Saturday,
November 18th, and baskets
are assembled by the Newcomers
and volunteers the food pantry.
“The food pantry donates
their time, and they come with
their big truck, and we pick up
hundreds of pounds of fresh produce
from Shaw’s. We pick all
that up in the morning and drop
it off at the Historical Society
barn. The Girl Scouts also make
holiday cards that we actually include
in the basket,” says Egnitz.
This is a big undertaking and
the Newcomers could use your
help! If you are short on time,
they accept monetary donations
Holliston Pantry Shelf
Receives $1,500 Grant
from Foundation
for MetroWest
Holliston Pantry Shelf, a
501c (3) non-profit food pantry
serving the community
of Holliston, Mass. has been
named the recipient of a
$1,500 operational grant from
Foundation for MetroWest.
The grant, which is part of
the Foundation for MetroWest
Hunger Relief program,
will support general operations
of the Holliston Pantry Shelf.
The Holliston Pantry Shelf,
which was established in 1993,
supplies food free of charge
to Holliston residents in need.
The Holliston Pantry Shelf has
a unique approach to help it
achieve its mission of “Neighbors
Helping Neighbors.” First,
the Pantry is open five days a
week, year-round. In addition,
the Pantry allows clients to independently
shop for their own
food. One of the most important
priorities of the Pantry is
respecting the privacy and dignity
of its clients. Finally, the
Pantry has no paid staff and
relies on volunteers to staff and
manage all operations. Therefore,
all money received by the
Pantry goes either toward buying
food or maintaining the
space for the Pantry.
“The Holliston Pantry Shelf
currently serves more than 200
families in our community,”
according to Steve Bradford,
President of Holliston Pantry
Shelf. “We are honored to receive
this significant grant from
Foundation for MetroWest, and
plan to put every dollar to good
use helping feed our neighbors
in need.”
Established in 1995, the
Foundation for MetroWest is
the only community foundation
serving the 33 cities and towns
in the region. The Foundation
promotes philanthropy in the
region, helps donors maximize
the impact of their local
giving, serves as a resource for
local nonprofits and enhances
the quality of life for all our
residents. Since inception, the
Foundation has granted $14M
to charitable organizations and
currently stewards more than
$18M in charitable assets for
current needs and future impact.
Common Training Mistakes
By: Brittany Framson
According to dog trainer
Marisa Bellis, a common mistake
that people make is actually
waiting too long to start training.
Ideally, training should begin the
moment your dog comes home
with you, regardless of his age.
Don’t wait until he gets older
and develops bad habits! In dog
training, the goal is to shape
your dog’s behavior and teach
them how to respond to specific
phrases. Young puppies might
not be ready to learn advanced
actions, but you should begin to
work on house training and basic
commands. Over time, this will
help you form a deeper bond
with your dog.
Training is not something you
can do once and be done. You
will get the best results if you
train your dog regularly. Find
fun, new things to teach your
dog, but occasionally revisit an
old action that your dog already
does well. Ideally you will always
be training your dog, even as he
ages and ongoing training can
help keep your dog’s skills sharp.
Training sessions are fun for your
dog and are a great way for you
two to bond! You want to make
sure you stay very consistent, as
consistent responses are essential
to dog training on every level.
When you are inconsistent, you
confuse your dog and may find
yourself accidentally reinforcing
unwanted behaviors. If you have
a rule to not allow your dog on
• CAREGiver’s • Companions • Home Makers
the bed, and you find yourself
making exceptions, it’s very confusing
to your dog as to why he’s
allowed up sometimes and not
others.
Training takes time, and each
dog learns at a different pace.
Getting stressed out and frustrated
because your dog isn’t
catching on is not going to help
the situation, and in fact, it makes
things worse because your dog
Holliston Police Department Officially
an Accredited Police Agency
Holliston Police Chief Matthew
Stone is pleased to announce
that the Holliston Police
Department was recently recognized
as an accredited police
agency by the Massachusetts Police
Accreditation Commission,
Inc. Town Administrator Jeff
Ritter, Chief Matthew Stone,
Lieutenant Craig Denman and
Lieutenant David Gatchell accepted
the award at a ceremony
at The Connors Center in Dover,
MA on October 12, 2017.
The Holliston Police Department
first achieved its certification
in May 2016, where a
team of assessors from MPAC
examined various aspects of the
department’s policies and procedures,
operations and facilities.
The Massachusetts Police Accreditation
Program consists
of 257 mandatory standards as
well as 125 optional standards.
In order to achieve accreditation
status, the Department must
meet all applicable mandatory
standards as well as 55% of the
optional standards based on department
size.
Accreditation is a self-initiated
process by which agencies voluntarily
strive to meet and maintain
the body of standards that
have been established for their
profession, by their profession.
“Being certified or accredited is
symbolic of an agency’s commitment
to professional excellence
in the workplace. It means that
the agency has agreed to adopt
Program standards as a way
of doing business -- and those
standards are considered best
practices, administratively and
operationally,” according to the
Massachusetts Police Accreditation
Commission, Inc.
The accreditation certifies
that the Holliston Police Department
has fully demonstrated
its commitment to police excellence
by living up to a body of
progressive standards to ensure
that the delivery of police services
within the Commonwealth
is at the highest level of professionalism
and integrity and having
reflected the best professional
practices in each area of police
management, administration,
operations and support services.
A special thank you to our accreditation
manger, Lieutenant
Craig Denman, for without his
hard work and commitment to
this project, this would not have
been possible.
Franklin Glass Company:
Over 50 Years of Doing It Right
By Marjorie Turner Hollman
Franklin Glass Company, at
273 Beaver Street in Franklin,
has focused on their core business—glass—for
over fifty years,
doing business here in town. A
lifelong Franklin resident, owner
Dave Nasuti, along with his
daughter and son-in-law, Beth
and Michael Razzano, all work
at the company Nasuti founded
in 1963. They still care deeply
not only for the services the
company provides to the community—they
care about the
people who work at Franklin
Glass Company as well, many
of whom can be found out back
in the shop, directly behind the
showroom and front office at the
front of the store.
Nasuti had to learn fast when
the businessman he bought the
company from, rather than
teaching him the business, found
another job and left him on his
own after only two weeks. He
married and became a father
that same year as well. But rather
than give up on the business, Nasuti
kept his eyes open, worked
hard and was ready to diversify
when he found opportunities that
worked with his business model.
Auto glass, windows, and screens
were the primary business when
Nasuti started. “It’s always been
a good business,” he said. They
recently ceased their auto glass
John’s
New England
family owned and operated for 45 years
operations, but have expanded
in many other related areas.
When a company has been
in business for over fifty years,
and its employees have stayed
around, several for the past thirty
years, you know the business is
doing something right. Enter
their showroom, and you’ll begin
to realize the possibilities of what
Franklin Glass has to offer beyond
repairs for broken windows
and torn screens. You’ll find quality
glass shower doors in many
styles, for bathroom remodeling
projects. The choices are varied,
and it’s easy to visualize what
your new bathroom will look
like as you wander the tastefully
displayed shower door options
set up throughout their brightly
lit show room. Mirrors of different
styles are also displayed,
helping provide a better idea of
what your home will look like,
especially helpful for those of us
who have difficulty picturing the
finished project. Be sure to visit
their website www.franklinglasscompany.com
where you’ll learn
much more about the various options
available. Their interactive
While their shop is set up to
quickly repair broken glass or
screen windows and doors, they
are also ready to help replace insulated,
double-paned glass windows
with broken seals that cloud
up. That cloudiness is moisture,
which not only affects how windows
look, but also allows heat to
escape from these compromised
windows. “Drop off a cloudy replacement
window in the morning,
and in many cases, we can
have the window repaired by the
end of the day,” Nasuti noted.
“Repairing these insulated windows
has become an important
part of our business.”
Franklin Glass Company
works with larger organizations
in the area as well, providing replacement
glass for broken windows
in Franklin public school
buildings, and other area schools.
They also contract with Dean
and other area colleges. Contractors
use Franklin Glass Company
for new construction, too.
But the company has never
forgotten the people who come
to them for simple things—they
Metrowest Veterans Consortium
Keeps Local Veterans Connected
By J.D. O’Gara
Last month, members of the
Metrowest Veterans Consortium
toured the Natick Readiness Center
of the Massachusetts National
Guard. They were welcomed to the
facility, opened in 2014, by Major
General Gary Keefe, the Adjutant
General of the Massachusetts National
Guard.
What is the Metrowest
Veterans Consortium?
Representative Carolyn Dykema
(D-Holliston) actually founded the
Metrowest Veterans Consortium
in April of 2012 to bring together
leaders in the Veterans community
to share experiences and successes
as well as highlight needs and concerns
of veterans in the Metrowest
area. Local veterans and veterans’
advocates can receive up-to-date information
and build consensus and
support for initiatives that support
local veterans.
“This all started with my own
education about veterans’ issues,”
says Rep. Dykema. “I
have not served in the military,
but I was assigned to the Committee
on Veterans’ Affairs. It was an
eye-opening experience for me on
the number of vets in our community,
of all generations. There are
WWII vets getting older, a whole
generation of Vietnam veterans
who are aging and had a certain
set of experiences and special
needs, and we’ve got this new generation
of vets from the Afghanistan
and Iraq wars, a completely
different group, that not only has a
new set of needs, but also receives
information in a different way.”
Dykema says she wanted to connect
“the needs of the veterans in
her community with what the state
was working on to support them.”
As she networked, she met more
vets in the greater Metrowest area,
such as Ed Carr, of Natick, who suggested
connecting veterans’ services
officers, veterans’ advocacy groups,
local veterans and legislators.
“In those 19 communities invited
to participate, any group regionally
that touches our local vets has participated
in (the consortium),” says
Dykema. The group meets quarterly,
and notices are sent out via a
type of listserv.
Some of the things the Metrowest
Veterans Consortium has helped
facilitate in recent years includes:
An earmark a few years ago (although
it did not get recent funding)
at Framingham State University for
a paid internship program for veterans
at the school.
“We have a very active veterans
group we connect with,” says
Dykema, “but because vets tend to
be older and have financial commitments,
they were being torn between
taking internships and part-time
jobs to pay the bills, and foregoing
some of the internships that might
be better in the long term... it was a
very popular program, and we were
disappointed we didn’t get (recent)
funding for it to continue.”
A few years ago, she explains, the
Metrowest Veterans Consortium
was able to advocate for changes to
local court in Framingham to the
benefit of veterans.
“About 20 veterans a day commit
suicide,” says Dykema. “These
vets, they come home – they’re helpers
by nature, that’s why they serve,
but sometimes it’s hard to be helped.
They come home with these challenges,
service or combat related,
and a lot of them have undiagnosed
Last month, the Metrowest Veterans Consortium toured the
Natick Readiness Center of the Massachusetts National Guard. The
consortium keeps veterans, veterans’ advocacy groups and legislators
connected and informed.
PTSD, and they don’t’ reach out
for help. A traditional way to cope
is things like substance use. You see
a growing use, which leads to things
like OUIs or other things that could
bring you into court system.”
The Valor Act Dykema helped
to pass offers “a session of Framingham
District Court reserved only for
veterans. It’s a supported structure.
Vets have to complete certain requirements
of this program that get
them on their feet, rather than have
them have a criminal record.”
Dykema sees the Metrowest Veterans
Consortium as “a community,
more of a network. One of things
you quickly find out when you work
with veteran community – anytime
you can have vets connecting, or
mentoring other vets, it really improves
the effectiveness,” she says.
Anyone in that consortium can call
on that group of resources.”
As day-to-day examples of relationships
that she’s been able
to build through the consortium,
the legislator points to an event in
which local students in the public
service program Project 351 are
working with Steve Bradford, of
the Holliston American Legion,
to write letters to veterans. “We
were able to pair them up with the
folks over at the Timothy Daniels
House,” says Dykema.
“One other things we did locally
was connected with Mass. Fallen
Heroes, Afghanistan and Iraq veterans’
families. We worked with Steve
to bring them out to Holliston so the
community could come and see the
moving memorial.”
Dykema is also excited about a
new Veterans Counseling Office that
opened up in Holliston in August at
the Holliston Town Office, 1750
Washington Street. The Holliston
site is the newest Community Access
Point offered through the Worcester
Vet Center, and offers free and confidential
counseling services to eligible
veterans and their families. The
CAP is open Mondays and Thursdays
by appointment, and you can
find out more at (508) 753-7902.
“It’s free and confidential counseling,
a satellite CAP (Community
Access Point) offered through the
Worcester Vet Center.”
Dykema points out that the
group is evolving, with communication
tending to be the biggest
challenge.
“Years ago, you’d go to a physical
place, but younger vets get information
very differently. We find
younger vets get their information
via Facebook and social media,
and it’s challenging to reach them,
because they’re very decentralized
… Communication at large is the
project. How do we disseminate
information so that people are
aware? That’s where the consortium
can add value. It’s a network
to share information.”
The Metrowest Veterans Consortium,
says Dykema, has an
extensive email distribution list
through which it disseminates information
about events. If you are a
veteran and would like to have your
email added to that list, call (617)
to have a blast and save some money to boot on your
upcoming holiday shopping. Be sure to take a look at the
enclosed map!
All that strolling
can be exhausting,
so thanks to several
sponsors, two free
be running from
12:30 – 5 p.m. Trolley
route #1 goes to
Hall, Upper town
hall and Washington
Street, and trolley #2
will take folks down
Norfolk St., Railroad
Street, Central Street
and downtown. This
year, it will include
Arcadian Farms and
Deborah’s Flowers,
both involved in the stroll for the first time this year.
In the spirit of the giving season, strollers will also have
a chance to help out those in need. Three Giving Trees
will be set up around town, one in front of The Grapevine,
one at Fiske’s and one at the Candy Cottage, for
strollers to donate hats, mittens, and scarves for those who
need them.
The Holliston Holiday Stroll would not be possible
without several local sponsors. These include:
TD Bank, Middlesex Bank, the Friends of the Library,
Kamala Boutique. Lamb & Associates, The Holliston
Reporter, Santander Bank, Depot Liquors, Anne Marie
Dance Studio, Boudreau’s Automotive, and Vestas Real
Estate Group.
John McDonough’s Pumpernickel Puppets
Toy Cupboard Theatre.
That was the name of the puppet
show John McDonough’s
mother took him to in Lancaster,
Massachusetts, when he
was a small boy of four or five.
But that show changed his life.
“It just sparked something.
I decided then I was going to
be a puppeteer and never really
looked back,” he says.
McDonough started putting
on shows when he was about
12, actually doing a paid gig
for a birthday party. He and
his puppets were such a hit
that word spread, and soon
McDonough was hired by a
church, and so on. The selftaught
puppeteer would pick
up techniques by watching
others perform.
Nowadays, the puppeteer
puts on 250 shows a year
throughout New England.
For nearly forty years, Mc-
Donough’s “Pumpernickel
Puppets” have captivated audiences
of all ages with humorous
and colorful adaptations
of classic folk and fairy tales,
and they’ve appeared in Washington,
D.C., Atlanta, GA and
even New York City.
For each production, John
designs and creates all of his
own puppets, from small hand
puppets to larger than life size
figures. He also manipulates
the entire cast and provides the
voices and sound effects.
The creativity of the profession
keeps McDonough interested.
“Just the creativity I enjoy.
In puppetry, there are so many
aspects to it. You get to act, you
get to write, you get to design.
It encompasses different skills.
I’ve always loved performing,
and making puppets as
well. The only drawback is the
travel.”
Do you want to try your
hand at puppetry? Mc-
Donough has some advice.
“So many children have
asked me. The library is always
a good place to start,” he says.
“Just start by reading puppet
books and watching other puppeteers.”
Pumpernickel Puppets will
perform at St. Mary’s Hall
during the Holliston Holiday
Stroll from 12-1 p.m. Visit
Fran Flynn the Magician
The magic bug bit Fran Flynn’s
place over 40 years ago, when he was
just 12 years old.
“I started at an early age. I used
to go to the Worcester YMCA –
there was a gentleman there, Steve
Daquiri, who was
learning to be a magician
himself,” says
Flynn, “He sparked
my interest, and the
rest is history.” Flynn
himself found himself
at the library, reading
up on how to perform
a magic show.
That same year,
Flynn invited friends
to his basement for
his first show. Those free home performances,
he says, taught him a lot.
“I learned how to say things, and
it helped me establish so I wouldn’t
have stage fright and could learn
how to pick volunteers. It was a big
help,” he says.
Nowadays, Flynn keeps magic
alive, because he truly loves kids.
“I truly, truly, love children.
They’re so honest, and I love to
make children happy,” says the magician,
who has two children and
two grandchildren. His shows are
geared toward children aged 4-10
or a large family audience. “To me,
the best sight is seeing
children laugh
and be happy. They
bring me a ton of joy,
they really do.”
Flynn, who was
featured in 55+ Magazine,
performs at
five restaurants every
week, making balloon
animals and performing
magic at tables. At
his show during the
Holliston Holiday Stroll, Flynn will
magically produce a live dove and a
live rabbit, and he’ll ask for volunteers
from the audience.
Fran Flynn will perform at Holliston
Upper Town Hall on stroll
day, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. For more
information on where else you can
see Fran Flynn the Magician, visit
An Open Letter to Our Dear Friends, Volunteers,
Community Members, Business Owners, Town Employees,
Family & Especially HIB Committee Members!
Mark and I don’t know
where to start, the
Symposium weekend
exceeded our expectations
and was spectacular! Words
cannot describe how happy and
proud we are! You guys were
wonderful, outstanding, cheerful,
helpful, enthusiastic, caring, generous
and the most amazing ambassadors
any town could ever
hope for. The last-minute street
clean ups in town, (thank you
DPW!) mulch spreading, dead
heading and watering was exhausting
but oh so appreciated,
our little “Hollyrock” Holliston
has never been so beautiful.
The work started in 2016 expanding
the border along Washington
Street. Local businesses
Tree Specialists and MoistureTek
donated materials and services.
Seventy-five hydrangea shrubs
were purchased and planted. Our
downtown floral design subcommittee
started planning the flowers
last fall and worked with Pleasant
View Nursery, a Proven Winners
grower, to order all the plants for
downtown areas and Pinecrest
Golf Club. Several weekends
were spent prepping and planting.
New self-standing window
boxes were built, planted, and delivered
to various storefronts free
of charge. Downtown Marigold
Project added many dozens of
window boxes on the bridges on
the Rail Trail and along Washington
Street. Countless hours were
spent caring for the border, and
multitude of planters throughout
town all summer and fall. In September
and October, nearly 1,000
mums were planted downtown
and at Pinecrest.
Our own Erin Dowling Porter
created a gorgeous color walking
tour pamphlet to give attendees
which described each of the 8
stops with brief talking points. In
contrast, prior years’ walking tour
participants receive a single page
I’d like to share a few stories
and comments that we heard over
the weekend...please indulge me.
Wednesday morning, a crew
of outstanding Garden Club
members descended upon the
Sheraton Hotel and transformed
it, creating fall vignettes with
cornstalks, pumpkins, grasses and
flowers; hotel workers comments
included “our hotel has never
been this beautiful, who did the
decorations, what company do
they work for” and so on. It was
a beautiful transformation! They
even put out a huge fall flower
arrangement in the entry way,
which took your breath away!
And then again on Thursday evening
at dinner, we were treated
to gorgeous fall arrangements on
the stage and the club’s beautifully
and creatively decorated
pumpkins (26), which adorned
the tables for opening night ceremonies
and the rest of the weekend.
Another wow moment... our
Laurie Levitt’s original Holliston
in Bloom art work that was on the
cover of the AIB brochures and
any symposium publicity was enlarged
(10 ft. x 10 ft.) and hung in
the hotel as a back drop and selfie
station, so beautiful!
On Thursday morning bright
and early at 7 a.m. ,our first team
of volunteers were at the hotel to
great folks from 39 cities across
the country and get them at the
correct locations, answer questions
and most importantly be
our ambassadors of Holliston;
all weekend judges, visitors and
board members commented on
the friendliness and helpfulness
of our volunteers, seems natural
and the right thing to do for us,
but you’d be surprised, thank you
to Registration volunteers!
Friday morning, a first for any
America in Bloom symposium,
Holliston in Bloom offered “Post
Office for a day!” Two wonderful
volunteers assisted our guests in
packing their silent auction treasures
and then mailing them back
to their homes. Even folks who
did not need this service were
impressed, we were able to help
AIB’s auction be more successful
as bidders now knew they could
get their purchases home.
Saturday belonged to Holliston.
A team of tireless town
decorators were in action late
Friday and Saturday morning -
corn bales, corn stalks, pumpkins
and mums were spread along the
walking tour. Pop-up tents went
up, coolers of water and snacks
delivered along with chairs went
to the tour locations. Volunteers
picked up linens, table decorations
and food and drinks from
food vendors. Goodwill Park and
the donated tent, table and chairs
was set up for lunch, beautifully
decorated, it took my breath away
when we walked into the park!
Leos and Lions were everywhere!
What an amazing group of volunteers!
As I drove around to all
the tour locations, I saw folks in
their yards planting flowers and
raking (never too late!). Town
businesses had spruced up their
outdoor spaces (even without asking!).
Two homeowners in town
even maned a “pause point in the
tour,” showing before and after
pictures of their homes.
LUNCH WAS AMAZING!
It was the most beautiful and
patriotic experience ever when the
3 coach buses exited onto Green
St. to be greeted by our school’s
marching band...and then escorted
to the park and tent for
lunch (I cried!). Our guests from
all over the country were waving
and clapping and so happy!
As they seated themselves at the
tables, every table had someone
from Holliston to share our stories
and make them feel welcome.
Our high school chorus awed
the over 170 lunch guests with
the most amazing (I know, I keep
using that word a lot, but everything
was amazing!) Star Spangled
Banner. With all the controversy
with our National Anthem (and it
was with our committee too), I am
very grateful that our lunch committee
fought for this and made it
happen. During lunch, the choir
continued to entertain and delight
our guests. And who knew,
Paul Revere and William Dawes
showed up riding beautiful horses!
Past President of AIB, Marvin
Miller later reported that on Friday
we visited Paul Revere’s grave
and today in Holliston he came to
life! After a fantastic lunch (guests
had pre-ordered their sandwiches,
either lobster roll or veggie wrap
made by Superette or Outpost
farm turkey sandwich) they were
also treated to Pinecrest’s clam
chowder, Outpost’s Boston Baked
Beans (served in traditional bean
pots thanks to a volunteer!), Boston
Creme Pie and of course,
Cape Cod potato chips!
Next was the walking tour...always
the highlight of the America
in Bloom symposium. Our team
of 16 tour guides, 8 timekeepers
and 12 plus presenters wowed our
guests! Mark was one of the fantastic
presenters, but I could drive
around and visit most of the stops.
I saw our presenters shinning and
proud, presenting the gifts and
treasures that Holliston has. Everyone
in Holliston should take
this tour! Along the way I visited
with judges (some ours in the past,
some who had never been here),
Board members and the founder
of America in Bloom said, “This
was the best walking tour of any
city ever!” A judge said, “ I have
been on so many walking tours
and the info. provided was “fluffy,
un-important information! Everything
you presented in Holliston,
a town or city can take back to
their city to make it better! Best
ever! … And the costumes, awesome,
what a great addition to
the tour!”.So, thank you friends
for wearing those hot, wool, period
costumes, we really do owe
you! And thanks to the Historical
Society and Mudville Players for
donating them!
But the best part for me were
the little stories I heard along the
way...one guest found out her
beloved pet had died during the
tour, so our tour guide took her
aside and comforted her until we
could pick her up, one person got
sick and needed to get back to
the hotel, our folks stayed with
them and one person had a leg/
foot injury and needed a ride to
tour. Sometimes a stop ran out
of water and needed more, delivered
quickly, everyone working
together to make this so successful!
And then the clean-up committee
arrived and magically put
our Goodwill park back to normal,
a most important and always
under-appreciated group of volunteers,
thank you so very much!
Saturday night, many of our
committee members were at
the awards ceremony, we were
greeted again and again and
again (so I guess they really meant
it!) that we did the best job ever!
Mark and I were so proud, along
with all the other committee
members to hear these remarks.
Our Mudville Mayor, Bobby
Blair, was presented a special
award for his Downtown Marigold
Project, (complete with a
standing ovation)...not something
that happens every year. It was a
very special award!
In closing, Mark and I are so
very happy, so very thankful to
all of you! We are so grateful our
town’s support, our elected officials’
support, our town administrator’s
support and the DPW’s
support! And most importantly
our VOLUNTEERS! We could
not have done it without all of
you!
I know we have left someone
out and we apologize in advance,
please share this letter of thanks
to anyone on your committee and
anyone we might have inadvertently
omitted.
Holliston School Committee News
This information first appeared
#HollistonInnovates
Dr. Brad Jackson, Holliston’s
superintendent,
launched a new blog to chronicle
the district’s efforts to innovate
in the classroom.
Although Holliston has long
been innovative in its approach
to education, these efforts have
gained new life as a result of
recent discussions around the
documentary film, Most Likely to
Succeed, which has been screened
in town thanks to the PTO.
The film and a book by the
same name make the argument
that schools need to evolve to reflect
the changing economy. Our
public school system was designed
around the country’s need
for factory workers 100 years ago.
Now, the argument goes, students
need to develop critical thinking
skills, learn to collaborate and
communicate effectively, and
solve problems creatively.
Parents will not notice an
overnight change. The superintendent
is looking to encourage
innovation in the classroom, take
some of the “high stakes test”
pressure off teachers, and discover
how best to move in a new
direction. Stay tuned.
Mental Health Concerns
at School
At its September meeting, the
School Committee received results
from the 2016 Youth Risk
Behavior Survey, which covers
Holliston students in grades 6-12.
While there was good news on
several indicators -- all substance
use is down -- some of the mental
health indicators are worrisome.
As Dr. Jackson put it: “Mental
health continues to demand attention.”
Overall, Holliston’s numbers
trend closely with other
Metrowest communities.
Full Holliston results are online
the Holliston Public
Schools page, under News and
Announcements.
In grades 9-12, 38.7 percent
of Holliston High School students
said life was “very” stressful
in the past 30 days, up from
31.7 percent in 2006. (Metrowest
communities are up from 27.9
percent to 35.8 percent over the
same time period on the same
question.) Over the past decade,
the portion of HHS students
who had considered suicide (in
the previous 12 months) rose
from 9.8 percent to 12.2 percent,
but those who had attempted
suicide dropped from 5.2 percent
in 2006, to 2.7 percent in
2016. Depressive symptoms and
self-injury among HHS students
are both down over the 10-year
period, but remain too high.
Although the percentages for
the same questions are mostly
lower for middle school students,
the trends are all up, with the exception
of depressive symptoms
in the previous 12 months, which
was down slightly to 12.5 percent
in 2016, compared to 13.2
percent in 2006, for 7th and 8th
graders.
The vast majority of Holliston
students participated in the
survey, which was conducted in
November 2016. Since then, the
administration and School Committee
have supported several
initiatives (and budget items) to
try to reverse the trend, and we
are committed to continuing this
work.
There was good news in the
report as well. From 2006 to
2016, lifetime cigarette smoking
among high school students is
down from 36.7 percent to 12.2
percent; binge drinking dropped
from 26.1 percent to 10.5 percent;
and lifetime marijuana use
declined from 35.4 to 25.2 percent.
Volunteers Needed at
Miller in November!
The Miller School will pilot
the Laps at Lunch program in
November, and volunteers are
needed. The program, already
in place at Adams, provides students
with an opportunity to
move their bodies, connect with
friends, and relieve stress during
their lunch period. This program
is supported by the Miller School
administration and the Holliston
Wellness Council, and to be successful,
the program needs parents
to support it! This promises
to be a fun way to volunteer and
get involved with the school community.
All volunteers must have an
active CORI on file. Please use
the following link to sign-up (coverage
needed between 11 a.m.-
12:55 p.m., but any portion of
that time would be appreciated)
Beware Common Acne Myths
By Lisa Massimiano,
Licensed Esthetician,
and Acne Clinic
There are a lot of urban
myths out there about acne.
Here are five common acne
myths and the real truth behind
these fallacies.
Achieve Clear Skin
Myth: Washing your face
multiple times a day prevents
break outs.
Fact: Washing your face several
times a day will not prevent
break outs, and it may even irritate
and dry out your skin.
Acne lesions start deep inside
the pores, and you need products
that penetrate inside the pores to
prevent acne from forming.
Myth: Acne is caused by
candy and french-fries.
Fact: A diet high in iodides (the
salt on the French fries) can make
acne worse, but neither candy
nor fried foods cause acne. Acne
is an inherited disorder – you are
either acne prone, or you’re not.
Myth: Toothpaste can cure
acne.
Fact: This is truly one of the
most bizarre urban myths. While
toothpaste may dry out existing
acne lesions, it does nothing
to prevent acne from forming.
Toothpaste can burn your skin
and many types of toothpaste
contain pore clogging ingredients.
Myth: Moisturizer will make
you break out.
Fact: Products that are strong
enough to control acne are often
drying, so it’s important that you
hydrate your skin. Many moisturizers
do contain pore clogging
ingredients, so you have to
be careful that you use one that
is acne safe.
Myth: Accutane will cure your
acne, and you will never break
out again.
Fact: I have many clients
come to me who have taken Accutane
and whose acne has come
back. Accutane can work well
for some people, but it’s not the
magic treatment people think it
is, and it comes with a lot of potential
side effects.
The best way to clear skin and
keep acne under control is with
the correct home care, modified
lifestyle habits and professional
treatments from an acne specialist.
Mass. Passes Legislation Banning Bump Stocks
In October, the Massachusetts
House of Representatives
passed an amendment sponsored
by Representative David
Linsky to the 2017 Supplemental
Budget banning the sale, purchase,
or ownership of a “bump
stock” device.
The amendment adopted
by the House bans the possession,
ownership, or sale of any
device that attaches to a rifle,
shotgun, or firearm, other than
a magazine, which is designed to
increase the rate of fire of said
weapon. The legislation carries
a punishment of imprisonment
in the state prison by not less
than three years nor more than
twenty years, and goes into effect
six months from the passage of
the bill.
“This legislation will ensure
that no one in Massachusetts can
legally possess a ‘bump stock,’
a device designed to increase
the deadliness of these already
deadly weapons,” said Representative
Linsky (D-Natick).
“These devices were created by
gun manufacturers as a workaround
of the federal law banning
the sale and possession of
automatic weapons, and there is
absolutely no place for them in a
civilized society.”
A “bump stock” is a device
that uses the recoil of a semiautomatic
firearm to file several
shots in succession, mimicking
automatic gun fire. While the
weapon still fires one bullet for
every pull of the trigger, the
“bump stock” automates the
trigger-pull process, allowing
shooters to fire at a rate of 400
to 800 rounds a minute. Twelve
of the rifles the gunman in the
A book signing at Fiske’s General Store in Holliston on Oct. 14 featured some of the key subjects in Ken
Dunn’s book entitled Holliston Panther Football, A Tradition of High School Football Excellence Since
1896. From the left are Gary Alger, former Holliston High fullback and second all-time leading scorer;
MassBay Community College’s
Student Development Office
conducted an on-line survey
of enrolled students to determine
if students had food insecurity
and found that more than half
(52%) who participated in the
survey reported “low” or “very
low” food security. This statistic
is comparable to the results of a
national study of community college
students conducted by The
Wisconsin Hope Lab called
“Hunger and Homelessness in
College”, which found 56% of
students reported “low” or “very
low” levels of food security.
MassBay held the food insecurity
survey in the Spring 2017
semester after hearing some students
lack food or are hungry
and wanted to explore how many
students were affected. The responses
were collected from 308
MassBay students and showed
differences in food insecurity by
subgroup: 55% of women, 75%
of Black or African American students,
and 62% of students who
took classes on the Framingham
campus had food insecurity.
To fight hunger on its campuses,
the Student Development
Office and many college wide
departmental offices has spearheaded
food insecurity initiatives
to ensure members of the
MassBay community have access
to food while on campus. These
include;
Since Spring 2016, MassBay
partnered with The Greater Boston
Food Bank to host a monthly
mobile food market with free fresh
fruits and vegetables, located on
the Wellesley campus. Students
on the Ashland and Framingham
campuses can pre-register, and
the food will be brought to those
campuses for them. This has benefitted
more than 2,648 students,
faculty and staff since it came to
campus.
Snack bins have been placed
in Student Development, Athletics,
Advising and Financial Aid on
the Wellesley Hills campus, offering
free, sustainable snack options
to all students. The snack bins are
also in Advising and Student Development
on the Framingham
campus.
The Student Development
Office, Student Government Association
and the Division of Humanities
and Social Sciences held
a student essay contest around
hunger issues. The two winners
of the contest will join Student
Development staff in attending
the National Convening on College
Food and Housing Insecurity
Conference in Philadelphia later
this month.
By providing this support oncampus,
the hope is to eliminate
a stigma surrounding food insecurity,
give access to healthy food options
and eliminate a potential
barrier for college success.
MassBay has also started a
Student Hunger Assistance Fund,
where individuals can make a donation
to the MassBay Foundation,
and their contribution will go
directly to helping students have
access to food. To make a donation
Holliston’s Londono-Ayr Will Stay
with Field Hockey — In Colombia
By Ken Hamwey,
Staff Sports Writer
Chloe Londono-Ayr is a senior
tri-captain on Holliston High’s
field hockey team that was battling
to make it three consecutive
playoff appearances at Local
Town Pages deadline. Although
the Panthers’ tourney fate was
still undecided (6-6-2 record),
their star midfielder’s future is set
— she’ll be playing the sport in
Colombia next year.
The Panthers’ center midfielder
enjoyed tournament
competition the last two years,
especially as a sophomore when
Holliston clinched the Tri Valley
League championship. The
excitement that surrounds playoff
field hockey might not occur
this fall, and that will create
some sadness for Londono-Ayr
because she considers her teammates
a family. Her passion for
the “family,’’ however, will never
fade, regardless of the Panthers’
playoff status.
“We lost five starters from last
year, but we’ve worked hard and
put forth the effort,’’ she emphasized.
“I love being on the team,
and I have great passion for my
teammates. The girls supported
me and I consider them all super
role models.’’
Playing in Colombia next year
is a new wrinkle for Londono-
Ayr, a decision she’s carefully
mulled. She wants to take a year
off after graduation in June and
play club soccer in Colombia.
College field hockey will follow
in the fall of 2019.
“My grandmother lives in
Colombia, and that’s where I’ll
stay,’’ she said. “I’ve been to the
country twice. Field hockey is a
new and growing sport in Colombia,
played mostly by men.
The club team I’ll join will be
a men’s squad, and its Spanish
name translates to ‘pioneers.’
We’ll practice twice a week and
play games on the weekend.’’
The 5-foot-2 Londono-Ayr
said she’ll spend the summer
after graduation with her friends
in Holliston, then depart for Colombia
next September. She’s
eager to sharpen her skills and
her stamina in South America.
“In Colombia, players are still
learning the game, but I hope to
improve my skills and endurance
by playing against men,’’
she emphasized. “The altitude
is high there, so my training
will help my endurance. Playing
against older men will challenge
me, allow me to be more flexible
and versatile and hopefully improve
my offense.’’
A good student who’s vice
president of her class, Londono-
Ayr currently is applying to about
six colleges, primarily Division 2
and 3 schools. She’s working on
a deferred acceptance. “I hope
to get accepted this school year,
defer my attendance, then return
to the States and begin college in
2019,’’ she noted. “I’ll major in
either pre-med or nursing.’’
A vocal captain who’s been
on the varsity for four years,
Londono-Ayr has played defender,
link and midfield. “I like
playing as a midfielder, because
it’s like being the quarterback
in football,’’ she said. “You see
the field totally, you’re always in
transition and you have the option
to dribble or pass. The key
is using your instincts to your
advantage.’’
Her coach, Alyssa Wesoly, labels
Londono-Ayr as Holliston’s
best distributor on offense and
one of the Panthers’ top players
on defense. “Chloe has a high
field hockey IQ, her stick skills
are excellent, and she can dodge
and distribute the ball effectively,’’
Wesoly said. “Her passing is accurate,
long or short, and she
handles penalty corners well.
Her decision to take a gap year is
a mature move. She’s definitely a
collegiate prospect.’’
A deliberate competitor, Londono-Ayr
relies on an aggressive
style when she’s in midfield. She
says she’d like to become more
aggressive on defense for a full
game. But, she wasn’t bashful on
defense when she was challenged
twice as a freshman.
“Our starting defender got
hurt in my first game and coach
Wesoly asked me if I was ready
to go in,’’ Londono-Ayr recalled.
“I was terrified but I played, and
Chloe Londono-Ayr is choosing an international experience over
a collegiate one next year after graduation as she’ll head to her
grandmother’s in Colombia.
did okay. She showed that she
believed in me and that really
helped my confidence. Later, in
a game against top-rival Dover-
Sherborn, I was assigned to
mark their best scorer (Caroline
Bono). I held my own and kept
her scoreless. She’s now playing
at Holy Cross.’’
The 17-year-old midfielder,
who was a TVL all-star as a sophomore,
rates that season as her
top thrill, because Holliston captured
the TVL crown. “That’s a
fond memory,’’ she said. “That
team was close-knit, we worked
hard in the summer on our skills
and won the title.’’
Calling her coach “a great
motivator whose approach is positive,’’
Londono-Ayr was glad she
was a captain with Addie Raymer
and Cayla Olson. “Addie is our
goalie and Cayla plays defense,’’
she said. “Both are talented and
we worked well together.’’
Relying on an athletic philosophy
that stresses hard work,
Londono-Ayr also believes that
reaching one’s potential is a key
to winning and enjoying a sport.
“It’s also important to be present
in a specific moment,’’ she
emphasized. “When we won the
TVL title, it was significant to
embrace it, feel it and react to the
moment.’’
Londono-Ayr almost passed
up field hockey for volleyball but
her former babysitter convinced
her to try field hockey. “She gave
me a stick, shin guards, a bag
and a ball,’’ she recalled. “Addie
and I were leaning towards volleyball,
but we changed our
minds and played field hockey
as seventh graders.’’
Now, six years later, Londono-
Ayr is preparing to close the book
on one chapter of field hockey
but will soon pursue the sport
in Colombia. Her parents, especially
her father who was born in
Colombia, are very supportive of
her decision and her desire to experience
a different culture.
“I wanted to have a different
experience than others,’’ she
said. “I can take a breather from
school for a year, learn Spanish
and still explore my passion for
field hockey.
Chloe Londono-Ayr’s year in
Colombia should be a dynamic
venture for a high-caliber student
athlete.

Holliston Volleyball Grows in Strength under New Coach
By Christopher Tremblay
After spending two years as
the junior varsity coach for the
Holliston girls’ volleyball team,
Anneliese Harrison was handed
the reigns of the varsity squad
this fall. With five games remaining
on their regular season, as of
this writing, the Panthers find
themselves with a 5-8 record and
are still in the hunt to reach the
state tournament.
“It’s in reach, but it’s going to
be a battle to qualify for the tournament,
needing more wins,” the
first-year varsity coach said. “Last
year, the team was only able to
manage three wins, so we’ve already
bettered that record, but
would still like to accomplish our
goal.”
Harrison believes the team
success is due to the more mature
athletes as well as the strong performances
from the hitters; such
as junior Brooke Geoffrey, who
is playing volleyball for the first
time. Geoffrey had participated
in other sports at Holliston, but
was looking for something different
this fall and decided to make
the move to volleyball.
“Brooke is an amazing individual
who was a complete match
to this sport,” Harrison said. “At
5’ 11” playing middle hitter, she
blocks just about everything that
comes near her.”
Senior Olivia Nguyen and
juniors Ally Edward and Anna
Kovea have been guiding the
team as tri-captains. Edward is
an outside hitter, who has height
just not as tall as Geoffrey, is a
very consistent hitter and one
Harrison can trust at all times to
get the job done. Nguyen is the
team’s setter and has meshed well
with both Edward and Geoffrey.
Kovea plays the libero position
while bringing an upbeat influence
to the squad.
“Anna plays a crazy back row
and dives all over the floor,” the
coach said. “She also keeps the
team positive with her attitude.
She always finds ways to make
any situation a happy one.”
Another outside hitter with
some power is junior Emily Howland.
According to her coach, she
has so much power she records
a kill almost every time she hits
Young talent and a good share of mature players are what’s adding strength to Holliston volleyball this year.
the ball. Howland also excels at
serving.
As the Panthers look to
change their past and chase a
berth in the tournament Coach
Harrison is already impressed
with their progress.
“Coming into the season we
were looking to be a lot more serious
team and bring an intensity
to the program,” Harrison said.
“I want to make them mentally
strong as well as physically. In
the past, they were not living up
to their potential, but this year
they’ve made some big strides.
Over the past few years Holliston
would be taken to the
cleaners by certain teams, but
this fall, the girls have grouped
together, and although they
haven’t always come away with a
win, they’ve kept the scores much
closer. Against rival Westwood,
the Panthers took the Wolverines
to a fifth set before eventually falling
and even defeated Medway,
which was a huge win for the
Don’t Hire a Cheap Contractor.
You’ll Pay More in the Long Run!
market analysis!
at my home, or when I’m looking
for a mechanic, or if I’m
looking to purchase a new lawn
mower, I don’t want to get multiple
prices. Really. Instead, I ask
friends and family what company
they recommend. Nothing
beats a personal referral.
Rather than worry about price,
It’s money in the bank in most
cases. Whether you’re looking
for a contractor or a great local
shop to buy your lawn mower,
don’t worry so much about
price. iInstead, focus on service
and quality and you’ll be better
much better off in the long run.
So why do so many Massachusetts
homeowners drive
themselves crazy chasing unprofessional
contractors hoping
to get their home updated for
the lowest price possible? Good
question. For most families, their
home is their number one investment.
Why cut corners or expose
yourself to undue risks by
hiring a cheap, unprofessional,
and many times inexperienced
contractor? When it comes to
home improvements, the old clichecliché
“you get what you pay
for” is on point. Here are some
tips to help you find a reputable
contractor that is a good match
for your needs. (Hint, price is
not an important factor.)
Establish a budget, and share
it with your contractor at the beginning
of the process. If you are
just gathering prices and haven’t
established a budget, a savvy
sales person will pick up on this
right awayup. on that. Just be
honest and talk about the budget
together. An experienced
home improvement contractor
will help you make adjustments
to your gross budget and allowance
items such as cabinetry,
windows, and flooring. They
also will be frank with you and
let you know if your budget is
realistic or not. So, instead of
wasting everyone’s time, make
sure you are on the same page
from the start. I will not visit
with a client if they will not provide
a budget over the phone. It
usually means they are not serious
about the project or haven’t
put much effort into planning
yet.
A cheap contractor is not likely
to provide and accurate assessment
and estimate of your project.
First of all, an estimate is
not a fixed quote. Estimates can
vary wildly in price and accuracy
depending on how experienced
the person preparing it
is. It’s not reasonable to expect
a contractor to look at your blue
prints or prepare a conceptual
design and budget in 30 to 60
minutes. Depending on the type
of project, this is several hours
of work, or more. An experienced
bidder will have systems
in place to help flesh out a budget
range, and will have many
dozens of similar jobs to reference
for pricing.
Initial budgeting really comes
down to experience and mutual
trust between the client and the
contractor. I have lost many
jobs over the years to “cheaper
bids” or as some clients like to
say, “mmore competitive.” More
often than not, I hear from those
folks a year or two later wanting
me to work with them on their
next project. “What about the
contractor with the more competitive
bids?” I ask.
“What a disaster. The job
was under-bid. We were hit with
30% cost over runs in change
orders and things we assumed
were included but were not. We
really messed up and should
have hired you to begin with.
You were honest about the price,
about what it would cost to do
the job. Even worse, the work
took forever, and it still isn’t
right. We didn’t save a nickel
going with the cheap guy, and
now he won’t call us back!”
Alas, inexperience is only one
way a cheap contractor may
underbid work. Unfortunately,
there are more than a few unethical
companies out there
that will intentionally under bid
work. They know that once demolition
is done, they have you
trapped and you’ll be forced to
sign change orders. The relationship
quickly deteriorates and
the entire experience becomes a
disaster.
Another disadvantage with
cheap contractors is their lack of
organizational skills. A small,
cheap contractor might be juggling
too many tasks and unable
to focus on your job. Running
several jobs and trying to keep
them stocked and financed, bidding
work, payroll, making sure
all the subs are properly ensuredinsured,
keeping you updated
on your job. It’s a lot to handle.
An inexperienced contractor
will not have they business savvy
to deliver a positive experience.
Again, you get what you pay
for. Simply ask your family and
friends. How was the experience?
Was the job on time and
on budget? Good quality work?
Trust referrals and you’ll be
a lot better off than spending
months looking for the lowest
bidder. Hiring a low cost, uninsured,
unprofessional contractor
will cost you more in the long
run every time. You’ll also be
stressed out and miserable living
through the process, and likely
have a fractured relationship at
the end of the job. That means
you’ll never get them to come
back for follow up visits when
you need them.
I know there are many folks
out there reading this and nodding
along because they’ve been
through this. Frankly, my best
and most loyal customers are
the ones who’ve been burned (or
victimized) screwed by a cheap
contractor. Once you’ve been
through that, you’ll never want
to relive the experience. You
might say I’m preaching to the
choir, but hopefully this article
will be read by newer homeowners
and help them understand
that to focus on price and make
that a priority over a trusting relationship
and quality work is a
recipe for heartbreak.
