Serving Hearthstone and the Community since 1978
TONE GARDEN CLUB
HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB NEWS
NOVEMBER 2017
hstone and the Community since 1978
It is that wonderful time of year again, the weather
begins to cool down with an occasional brisk morning
breeze. A good time to sit outside and enjoy a steaming
hot cup of Joe and take in the fresh fall air. I just love
Fall and all the beauty it brings. The changing colors,
fall plants in beautiful vivid shades of gold orange, red
and purples and changing leaves. There is a change
in the air and the scent of fall is everywhere you turn.
Nice walks down the street, through the park or in the woods to relax. A nice day on the course
for a round or two of golf is much nicer this time of year. It is a special time of year and one can
feel it as it settles in.
I hope everyone is out getting your yards and gardens ready for the cooler weather. If you
haven’t gotten your bulbs in the ground for spring, do so now. If you are planting any new
trees or shrubs, get them planted. Mulch needs to have been put down last month, but if
you are running behind, go ahead and get it done. Your plants and the soil will thank you
throughout the cooler months and into the spring. Do not forget to weed your beds before
applying your mulch, otherwise those pesky weeds will find a way to crop up. Talk to your
local lawn and garden professionals about any questions or concerns you may have. Stay on
top of the “webworm” issues and take steps to protect your grass or what you have left. It
does not appear to be as bad this year, but the risk is still present. Please continue to water
through the end of the year, especially if the temperatures stay warmer and there isn’t much
rain. Your fall perennials and annuals need water. Be on the lookout for Jack Frost, he is lurking
and can catch you off guard. Hopefully, he will wait a month or so to show himself, just be ready
with the supplies you need to cover and protect those tender plants. Landscape is not easily
replaced once destroyed by the weather. Be prepared should we experience another freeze
like last year and get your supplies ahead of time. My what devastation we saw throughout
the neighborhood. My hat is off to the Hearthstone residents who were diligent and kept their
plants alive, what a feat! I am sure we will not see a freeze until early next year, but the weather
is a little uncertain and unpredictable these days.
Hearthstone had goblins and spooks in the neighborhood for Halloween. It is always so much
fun to see the little ones in their cute costumes, along with the faces of moms and dads or
grandparents who take the time to let their children Trick or Treat. It was such a fun time as a
child and when I took my own boys from house to house in our neighborhood. The expressions
on their faces of excitement were so worth the time and effort. Memories created which live on
forever in our minds.
Can you believe the Holidays are already upon us? It is almost Thanksgiving and all the
activities with family, friends, children, pets and delicious foods are just weeks away. I can just
taste the Turkey and dressing, hot rolls, pies, cakes, endless wonders from the kitchen, feel
the excitement of fun outdoor activities, football games in the yard or on the television and
rooting for our favorite teams. Planning travel to spend time with the special people in our
lives. Of course, don’t forget the day after Thanksgiving Sales and the madness which goes
with it. Amazing!
Speaking of the Holidays, the Hearthstone Garden Clubs Annual Holiday
Auction is happening this month. Our theme is “Ruby Red Christmas.” The
auction is great place to get some of your holiday shopping done or pick
up some delicious goodies for Thanksgiving or Holiday guests. If you have
never joined us, you are missing a wonderful evening. Our members and
guests have a great time socializing, seeing old acquaintances, meeting
new people and making new friends. Our proceeds go to support our local
charities and causes. Along with our “Live” and “Silent” Auction items, we
have back by popular demand the “Sports Memorabilia.” There is some
great pieces of authenticated sports memorabilia available. If he doesn’t
have what you want, he can most likely get it. We have some fabulous
items lined up for the Auction this year. Mark your calendar and make plans
to spend Saturday evening, November 18 th from 6:30 PM to 10 PM at
Hearthstone Country Club, with the Hearthstone Garden Club. Admission
is $5, there is a Raffle of a beautiful watercolor by a local artist, finger foods
and cash bar, Live and Silent Auction items, baked goods silent auction
and Sports Memorabilia. See our Ad in this Issue of the Hearthstone News
for more details. Please come out and support our efforts to raise money
for our local charities, scholarships and neighborhood beautification. The
garden club members and I look forward to seeing you at our Auction.
The garden clubs monthly meeting will be on Tuesday evening,
November 14 th at 7 PM in the ladies locker room, at Hearthstone Country
Club. Join us for “Holiday Designs from Your Garden” presented by Donna
Senter. Donna and her husband, Ken, are the owners of “The Senterpiece”
on Jackrabbit Road. They have won numerous awards including the
Houston and Texas Cup. Their business has been featured in “Weddings
in Houston” magazine. Donna uses her passion, knowledge and design
creativity for a presentation on color, texture and inspired design in
holiday floral arrangements. Members of the garden club just love Donna’s
design work and she is back by popular demand. Trust me, you do not
want to miss her presentation.
Please remember what this season means and never forget to be thankful
for all you have. Despite all the turmoil in the world, we are fortunate
here in our part of the world. Yes, many have suffered from the recent
devastation of Hurricane Harvey and the flooding, loss of jobs, homes
and lives turned upside down. I pray for peace in their lives and I believe
my neighbors feel the same. As people pick up the pieces of their lives
there will be many struggles and life will never be the same for many
Houstonians. The sooner all can return to what is normal, the quicker our
city will heal. Remember to thank God for what you have and know you
are blessed to be living in a country where we know Freedom. There are
those who seek to destroy the freedom we have and what our country
stands for and was built on. If we join together as a nation and keep God at
the forefront, we will prevail. Please pray for peace!
Be safe in your Holiday travels and activities and enjoy what is near and
dear to your hearts. Tell the special people in your lives how much you
love and care for them, we never know what lies ahead.
See around the neighborhood!
HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS
The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights
throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like you
see along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative light poles
along Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods.
Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the pole
number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number facing
the street. You can report streetlights that are not working or staying on
during the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage (Google
streetlight outage) or give us the pole number and we will do it for you.
Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported
to PCMI at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest
address. The association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime
inspection for lights that are out, but if you see a problem, please report it,
so we can achieve our goal to keep all the lights on all the time.
TRASH DAYS
Trash days are Tuesdays and Fridays with recycling pickup on Fridays. If
you have questions, call 281-368-8397.
BOARD MEETING
Board Meetings are now bi-monthly, usually on the 3 rd Wednesday at 7:00
PM. Hearthstone Country Club.
LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with
their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each
dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have
machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help
found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.
6
WEBSITE
Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use
design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news,
quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms
and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let
us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at
www.hearthstonehoa.org.
HEARTHSTONE HOA EMAIL ALERTS
Just register at the site using “Join our Mailing Lists” on the opening page.
You will be automatically added to the email group.
This group will be used to quickly but sparingly, get information out to
members between newsletters. If you would like these messages sent to
more than one email address, just register again with each address you
want included in the group.
The addresses will not be sold, distributed or used for any purpose other
than association business. Your address will not even be shared among
group members. Messages sent to the group will be limited to those
authorized by the HOA Board of Directors. If you have already joined the
email group, you do not need to do so again.
HEARTHSTONE EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS
When making any changes to the exterior of your home, please keep
in mind that you must first submit an application and receive written
approval. An application can be obtained by sending a request to
customercare@pcmi-us.com.
The PCMI call center is manned by three people. The main number is 281-
870-0585. The hours are 7 AM to 6 PM Monday through Thursday and 7
AM to 5 PM on Fridays.
SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious
person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a
suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street).
2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any
vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around
your street that you don’t recognize).
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you
are at home.
4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.
5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the
police catch the bad guys.
6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.
7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and
acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the
door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all
cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s
office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house,
they are going to your neighbors.
8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their
age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for
whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to
come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office.
9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust.
Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood
buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will
quit sending them into your subdivision.
10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in
plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count).
Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in
your cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of
the first contacts).
CFISD ATHLETES ENJOY SUCCESS AT
SPECIAL OLYMPICS AREA SWIM MEET
Roughly 50 CFISD athletes represented the district with gold, silver and
bronze medals as CFISD hosted the Special Olympics of Texas Area 4 Swim
Meet on Oct. 7 th at Cypress Ranch High School.
The meet continues a long-standing relationship between CFISD and
Greater Houston Special Olympics that is closing in on 30 years. In
addition to the swim meet, the Area 4 Basketball Tournament will be held
at various district campuses in March.
The swim meet began with an opening ceremony where athletes from
each participating team took part in a passing of a ceremonial torch. It
included Felipe Rodriguez, who later earned a silver medal with fellow
district athlete’s PJ Wheeler, Connor Carpenter and Christian Mackley in
the 100-yard freestyle relay.
The meet also featured “skills” events for athletes beginning in the
sport. Events included a 15-meter walk and 10-meter assisted swim
where athletes received assistance and encouragement from Cy Ranch
swimmers.
The aquatics season is always an exciting time for the athletes, coaches
and families. It is the first sport season of the school year and marks the
beginning of of Cy-Fair ISD Special Olympics.
CFISD SUPPORT DEPARTMENTS HONOR DISTRICT
LAW ENFORCEMENT WITH LUNCHEON
CFISD has a new chief of police, but the district still has the same level of
appreciation. And Chief Eric Mendez wasn’t shy with his gratitude before,
during and after the fifth annual CFPD/Security Department Appreciation
Luncheon, put on by the staff from CFISD’s transportation, facilities and
construction and operations teams Oct. 9 th at Cy-Fair High School. “In
27 years in law enforcement, I have never seen anything like this type
of event,” said Mendez, who joined CFISD in July. “That is specifically
to support a police department and just to give them appreciation for
what they do day in and day out. It’s pretty awesome to see this from the
community and the departments within the district.”
Combining their efforts, volunteers from numerous departments worked
shifts over the weekend to prepare a barbecue lunch for CFISD’s men
Eric Mendez, CFISD chief of police, gives
a few remarks to those in attendance at
the fifth annual CFPD/Security Department
Appreciation Luncheon.
Bill Powell, director of
transportation, bought retired
Chief Alan Bragg lunch one day six
years ago, picking up the tab on a
hamburger to show his appreciation.
It turned into burgers and hot
dogs. Then came Bridget Roome,
transportation data management
specialist and her husband Paul,
facilities and construction special
projects manager, who took the
luncheon to the next level.
Workers from the departments served lunch and even provided musical
entertainment to the honored guests. CFISD campuses and transportation
centers joined in the effort, buying “We Love CFPD” shirts to help support
the luncheon. The luncheon received more than $15,000 in donations and
officer giveaways from area businesses and individuals.
In addition to simply giving thanks, Powell said the luncheon was also a
chance for fellowship between the departments. It helped ease frustration
and differing philosophies when Powell and Bragg met for lunch and has
become a way for entire departments do the same.
Thank you
A Veteran, whether active duty, discharged, retired,
VETERANS!
Our communities are fi lled with the brave men and
women that have selfl essly served our country.
November 11th is designated as Veteran’s Day, however
we are humbled and grateful to each of you today
and always. Thank you, Veterans, for your courage in
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION
FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to
help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with handson
community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.
NEW BEST FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER!
Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful
dogs and cats hoping for their forever homes. We have all
different types of small to large dogs, mixed breeds and
many wonderful cats to choose from.
We are a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not
ready to commit to adopting a dog or cat permanently, the
animals also need foster families. Besides providing food,
water and a safe place to sleep, foster families socialize the
animals so they are people friendly. Include the animal in
your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as
individuals so you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes,
anecdotes. Treat the animal like your own and train him/
her, if possible.
Although you may feel sadness when your foster animal is
adopted, please know that your efforts helped to prepare
the cat or dog for his/her forever home.
HEARTHSTONE
7327 Creek Crest

Recipe for Friendship
2 quarts of kindness
1 scoop of smiles
A pinch of patience
3 heaping helpings of hugs
4 T. of tenderness
A dash of devotion
3 spoonfuls of support
1 C. of compassion
Gently stir all ingredients. Cover with a layer of love,
sprinkled with a gallon of giggles.
Serve generous daily portions to all you love!
Turkey Tetrazzini
1-1/2 pound Thin Spaghetti, Broken In Half
4 Tablespoons Butter
4 cloves Garlic, Minced
1 pound White Mushrooms, Quartered
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 cup White Wine
1/3 cup Flour
4 cups Turkey (or Chicken) Broth
1 block 8 Ounce Cream Cheese
3 cups Cooked (leftover) Turkey
1 cup Finely Chopped Black Olives
1-1/2 cup Frozen Green Peas
4 slices Bacon, Fried And Cut Into Bits
1 cup Grated Monterey Jack Cheese
1 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
Salt And Pepper, to taste
Extra Broth For Thinning
1 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
Cook pasta until not quite done - al dente according to package instructions (it
will finish cooking in the oven.) Drain, rinse, and set aside.
In a large pot, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add garlic and saute for
a couple of minutes. Add mushrooms and salt, then saute for a couple more
minutes. Pour in the wine and allow it to cook with the mushrooms for several
minutes, or until the liquid reduces by half.
Sprinkle in flour, then stir the mushrooms around for another minute. Pour
in the broth and stir, cooking for another few minutes until the roux thickens.
Reduce heat to medium low. Cut cream cheese into pieces and add it to the
pot. Stir it to melt (don't be concerned if the cream cheese remains in little
bits for awhile; it'll melt eventually!) Add the leftover turkey, the olives, the
peas, the bacon, and the cheeses. Stir to combine, adding salt and pepper as
needed.
Add the cooked spaghetti and stir it to combine. Splash in more broth as
needed; you want the mixture to have a little extra moisture since it will cook
off in the oven. If it's a little soupy, that's fine! Add up to 2 more cups of liquid
if you think it needs it.
Pour the mixture into a large baking dish and sprinkle the top with Panko
crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly
and the crumbs are golden brown.
