Chaos ensued after a number of party members who wanted to be part of the elections were allegedly refused entry to the Bonkolo Dam Conference Centre. During the fray, a vehicle belonging to Regional Executive Committee (REC) member Nombuyiselo Ndlebe’s husband, Mendile, was overturned. They were not in the car at the time. Ndlebe said people were stabbed, stoned and assaulted, while some ANC members managed to flee in their vehicles. By Wednesday, all of them had been discharged from Frontier Hospital. Ndlebe, who was allegedly also denied access to the meeting, said all those affected by the violence were from the Zingquthu branch as about 300 people were locked out of the meeting, with a further 300 inside the premises. She claimed that branch leaders had not informed people who was meant to attend the meeting. ANC regional secretary Lusanda Sizani, who did not attend the meeting, said the party was preparing for the upcoming provincial and national c o n fe r e n c e . “The Chris Hani region had a programme to elect its leadership and the branch general meeting [BGM] to elect delegates. A funeral for Kula, who originally hailed from King William’s Town, was being planned for tomorrow and transport was being arranged for Huntershill staff, Harvey said. There are allegations that the meeting was run by REC members in spite of what happened.” Speaking on behalf of the REC, Sizani condemned the fighting. “When members disagree it does not mean they are enemies. We appeal to members to debate and hold different views, but to do so with dignity in a way that does not undermine the party’s image.” He said there had also been a “d i st u r b i n g ” claim that while the victims were taken to hospital, the meeting continued which, he said, illustrated their desperation for power. “If the allegations are true, those who are politically disciplined members of the ANC who have a political consciousness with a sense of maturity and credentials that are not questionable were supposed to have adjourned the meeting.” Instead, the leaders should have ensured people were taken to hospital and their families informed, he said. An REC meeting would look into the issue and make arrangements to visit the branch and apologise to the affected families. The ANC would also investigate the matter as personal issues may also have been involved. Komani police spokeswoman captain Namhla Mdleleni said the fight ended when police arrived on the scene. No arrests were made and no cases were opened. Group tells of fracas at the dam ABONGILE S O LU N D WA N A ANC supporters hurt in a brawl which broke out at the ward 18 branch annual general meeting at the weekend, have denied that they were the aggressors. A group of people who visited The Rep on Wednesday with ward 18 member Thembile Waxa, said they were told at the gate that only registered members could enter while several youths, believed to be non-members, could be found inside. Waxa said he and other party supporters had just finished preparing candidates for the elections of the branch executive when they were denied entry to the Bonkolo Dam premises. As they tried to open the gate, bottles of alcohol were thrown at them. He said they feared for their lives as chaos ensued. “It felt as if we were at Marikana or at the FNB Stadium stampede as people were trampling on others trying to escape.” Waxa said those attacking the group were under the influence of alcohol as knives were brandished and people were stabbed and stoned. “The people who were inside – who were not party members – are those who caused the disruption of the meeting.” He said those outside the gates were innocent of wrongdoing and that the car that was overturned belonged to one of their members. “In the preparation meeting we had requested for police to be delegated to prevent disruptions from happening as there were old people there, but no one paid any at tention.” He said the latest incident followed on about 10 previous occasions which sought to elect a new branch committee. The conflict is related to dissatisfaction between Ndlovukazi and Zingqhutu residents about c a n d i d at e s . Ward committee member Anele Xhentsa, who was also outside, said, “We did not take the people to be beaten at the event. We had a meeting with the region and there was an agreement that we should bring people for the meeting. I told the women who were being stoned to duck and run.” He said the rules of the party did not indicate that people should be locked out. Police spokesman Captain Namhla Mdleleni said police stopped a Toyota with a CA registration number while patrolling along the N6 through town. POLICE in Komani have established a task team to investigate the disappearance of a 14-year-old girl from Mlungisi three weeks ago. In the meantime, police confirmed this week that they continue to await the DNA results of a body found in the Eskom residential area three weeks ago. Police spokeswoman Captain Namhla Mdleleni confirmed this week that the results had not yet been returned to the local police. The body had been found between John Noah High School and the residential area, with a tyre placed around it. Police are also continuing the search for a missing girl, Vuyolwethu Hemeni, 14, from the same area, who went missing on August 25. Twenty-six bags of dagga were seized and a 35-year-old man taken into custody. The suspect was believed to be travelling from Ntabankulu to Cape Town. A case of possession of dagga was opened.
