DO YOU KNOW THE
CONDITION OF YOUR
FUSEBOARD?
When Did You Last Check Yours?
Your fuseboard, or to give it the proper name your
consumer unit, Is the electrical hub of your home.
It distributes electricity to your lights, plug sockets,
oven etc if working correctly It should
protect your cables from overload.
This gives you and your family
protection from serious shock or
electrical fire. However, most people
never give it a second thought. I often
hear people say ‘It worked fine, so we
just left it alone’ or in some cases the
home owner doesn’t even know where it
is. It is important to maintain your electrical
installation and a functioning and safe fuseboard
goes a long way to doing this.
Check Out The Four Indicators That You May
Need An Upgrade..
1- Age- If your fuseboard has not been changed in
twenty years then it is likely not compliant with
current standards and may not provide you with
basic protection. Technology and safety associated
with consumer units has also moved on massively
in the last thirty years from both the perspective of
shock and fire protection and also the ease of use
for the homeowner.
2- Does your consumer unit have an RCD or
Residual Current Device? Most modern consumer
units should have and this single device massively
increases the safety of your home electrics.
3- Live parts exposed- Are the
working parts, fuses, or circuit
breakers enclosed or are parts of
the board exposed? It’s surprising
how many fuseboards we come across
with fuseholders or blanking plates
missing leave live parts exposed to
touch.
4- Fire risk- As mentioned above, is your fuseboard
constructed of wood or plastic? If it is then it may
not meet fire regulations.
GO AND CHECK YOUR FUSEBOARD NOW
If you would like a free assessment of the
condition of your consumer unit please call
Anthony on 020 8419 8345
CR5 Technology
It’s the annual online shopping frenzy, but not all
bargains are brilliant.
At the end of November the UK will celebrate
a fairly new annual event: Black Friday. It’s an
import from the US, where retailers kick-started
the Christmas shopping season with big bargains,
and now it happens here too. This year Black
Friday falls on 24th November, but there will be
deals for the week running up to it and in the days
afterwards too, most notably Cyber Monday on
27th November.
One of the biggest
Black Friday players
is Amazon, which
extended the
shopping weekend to
1
BLACK FRIDAY & CYBER MONDAY:
WILL YOU BAG A BARGAIN?
what it called Black
Friday Deals Week in
2016. Other retailers
have followed suit,
making Black Friday a week-long event that often
carries across well into the next week. It’s mainly
an online event, although some High Street chains
take part too, and while the emphasis in previous
years has been on electric and electronic items
such as home electricals, computing and gadgets,
the scope has been widening to encompass
fashion, jewellery and other distinctly low-tech
items too.
Are the bargains real? The short answer is
“hmmm”. Prices are often displayed on the
basis of how they compare to the recommended
retail price, but in many cases that’s fiction: in
electronics, you’ll often find TVs with an RRP of
thousands being sold everywhere for half that
amount. If you’re considering a big-ticket item
such as a television or other expensive electrical
products, it’s well worth using sites such as
PriceSpy to see what other retailers are offering
or CamelCamelCamel to see what Amazon has
previously been charging. For example, at the
time of writing (not Black Friday!), Amazon is
offering a saving
of £539 on the
LG 65UJ750V TV,
bringing the price
down from £2,099
to £1,560 - but
CamelCamelCamel
2
shows that the
highest price Amazon has charged was £1,699. It’s
still a saving, but it’s not as big as it seems.
That’s not to say there aren’t real bargains to be
had. There are, but they’re in among a lot of endof-line
stock and carefully negotiated deals with
suppliers. The best deals tend to be on the things
with the highest profit margins, so for example, if
you’re looking for a PlayStation 4 you’ll see bigger
discounts on bundles - combinations of consoles,
accessories and games - than on the console by
itself, because the profit margins on bundles have
more wiggle room.
The trick to bagging a great bargain on Black
Friday, Cyber Monday and the days before and
after is to know what you want, know what you
want to spend and know what the going rate for
a particular product is - and to make use of the
price checkers we’ve already mentioned. It helps
if you’re flexible, too: the likelihood of a specific
model of TV being offered at the right price is quite
low, but if you’re willing to consider very similar
models or models from other manufacturers you’ll
often find that you can get what you want for the
price you’re willing to pay. And don’t forget, if
you’re buying online you have the full protection
of EU consumer legislation, and the distance
selling regulations in particular: if you aren’t happy
for any reason, you can return goods for a full
refund if you do so within seven days of delivery.
Losing it
Stuff gets lost. It’s a given. Even in an age
where your fridge has a GPS tracker, things,
often small vital things, become mislaid,
wander away from where they should be, or
slip into that pocket dimension where a huge
pyramid of odd socks, house keys and mobile
phones exists, worshipped by aliens who
haven’t quite worked out what it’s all for.
Today, in the usual scurry of preparation for
school, my daughter ran down the stairs in
search of her school shoes. They weren’t
in her room. A swift scan of the downstairs
revealed the errant footwear was not there
either. Then it struck. The realisation and
horror that actually the reason she couldn’t
find them around the house was that they’d
not come back to the house. That rather than
change out of her trainers after PE at the
end of the school day, she’d stayed in them.
And so her black leather Clarks school shoes
were… looks out of window at the grey
rain-sodden morning sky… left by the side
of the playing field. Cue hurried note to the
teaching staff to explain why daughter is in
trainers and a dash to the school so that she
can begin the search.
It’s not the first thing thats gone
astray. Kiera lost her entire PE kit in Year 7 at
school. And despite everything having her
name in, it never re-appeared.
But in comparison to some of the things that
have been lost over the years, that’s nothing.
London Transport, and for some strange
reason particularly the Underground, have
legendarily have had handed in all sorts of
oddities lost or abandoned on their trains and
buses. The Baker Street headquarters of the
TfL Lost Property department has held in its
over 80 year existence items as varied and
strange as false legs, a crossing patrolman’s
‘lollipop’, a life-size gorilla doll, televisions,
wedding rings and false teeth. And that’s in
addition to the more usual round of
umbrellas, bags, mobiles and keys.
For really losing stuff though, you need
history. Take Tutankhamun’s tomb. Lost for
thousands of years before Howard Carter
found it in 1922. The Knights Templar, a
military order founded in 1119, set up their
own banking system and amassed an
incredible fortune. But when, on Friday 13th
October 1307, King Phillip of France (who just
happened to owe them money, and backed
by the Pope who was jealous of their power)
had their leaders arrested and the order
outlawed, the vast majority of their treasure
was missing. And so were several thousand of
the order’s men and 18 ships, who sailed out
one night from La Rochelle under cover of
darkness and were never seen again, lost to
history forever.
However, when it comes to losing
with real, grand-scale ineptitude and bad luck,
you can’t go much more wrong than
perennial fall-guy, King John of England.
Having inherited a significant kingdom from
his father King Henry II after the death of his
popular brother Richard the Lion-Heart, he
proceeded over the course of his reign to
lose first Brittany, then all his other lands in
France. He lost the backing of the Pope when
he argued with him over who should be the
Archbishop of Canterbury, and when the
Pope excommunicated him and enacted a law
that said no-one’s christening or marriage in
England would be legal until he said so,
he lost the people too. By 1216, having
been forced to sign the Magna Carta by his
rebellious barons, he had lost the absolute
authority that the previous Kings of England
had held. Really, could it get any worse? Yes.
With his country at war, many of
his barons siding with a French pretender
backed by the Pope, John was constantly on
the move. Nowhere was truly safe. So on the
12 October, he and his court were travelling
from Bishop’s Lynn in Norfolk to Lincolnshire,
safer territory than the lands to the south. As
they crossed The Wash, an area of marshland
and mudflats much bigger than it is today,
they misjudged the tide and a torrent of
water washed away the baggage train. And
with it, purportedly, the Crown Jewels. It
seems to have been the final straw, for John
died less than a week later. And the jewels
have never been found.
So the next time you pat down thirteen
different pockets in three different jackets for
your elusive car keys, or disembowel the sofa
looking for the TV remote, chill.
It could be a lot worse…
This is Smudge, a 2 year old domestic shorthair who came into rescue recently.
Smudge was handed in for biting the owner. They said he was attacking them
for no reason.
But he had not been castrated and was acting like many entire toms do.
As soon as he arrived we had him neutered and he has never shown any
aggression to us. In fact, completely the opposite. He is very loving and
affectionate and adores his cuddles and human company.
Smudge had a terrible flea infestation when he arrived and such a heavy
roundworm burden that he was vomiting large adult worms when he got here.
This was likely to have contributed to his bad mood and was treated straight
away. The worms would have given him a terrible stomach ache.
He was also introduced to other cats after castration and he has accepted and
actually enjoys living with them! He doesn't like taking pills (very common with
cats) but had his vaccination and microchip without complaining.
Smudge would be quite happy living as a house cat, but equally is a homely
boy and if a home with a garden was available (with no main roads nearby),
then he is safe to go wandering and will not disappear (this would be subject
to him staying indoors for a period of time after adoption to allow him to
settle). Smudge is not keen on dogs.
He is very clean in the home and uses the litter tray without fail.
He is best placed with older teenage children or an adult household. He does
not want to be grabbed or pinched by young children.
Smudge has been vaccinated, castrated and microchipped plus wormed and flea treated.
There is a minimum adoption fee of £40 and a homecheck will be required.
GIVE FOREST A HOME!
This month, Animal Protection Trust is looking for a loving
home for a gorgeous 11-month-old mongrel, called Forest.
He is very loving and affectionate. He is also eager to learn
and please, and is currently enjoying training. As well as
being playful and comical, he is a very clever dog and walks
well on the lead. He gets on with other dogs and would be
a great addition to any family, who can continue his training
and give him the love and time he needs. Forest has been
vaccinated and micro-chipped and will be neutered. If you can offer Forest a home, please call
Jacqueline on 01293 782356.
For further information about Animal Protection Trust, and the dogs and cats in its care, please
visit the website: www.animalprotectiontrust.org.uk. For Animal Protection Trust’s Lost and
Found Register, contact 01293 553935.
Animal Protection Trust is a registered charity, formed in 1984. All the work carried out by the
Trust is voluntary – no-one is paid. Volunteers come from all walks of life but have one thing in
common – the desire to help animals in need. The charity does not charge for its services or its
animals and continues to be supported by public donations.
Seventy Years of Marriage
The Queen and Prince Philip
On 20th November, Queen
Elizabeth II and Prince Philip
celebrate seventy years of
marriage (the longest of any
British monarch). We look back
over their 75-year romance.
A QUEEN IN WAITING AND A
HANDSOME PRINCE
Born on 21st April 1926 to Albert
and Elizabeth, the Duke and
Duchess of York, Princess
Elizabeth became heir to the
throne when her uncle’s
abdication in 1936 made her
father King George VI.
Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark
was born on 10 June 1921
to Prince Andrew of Greece and
Princess Alice of
Battenberg. An often-tragic
childhood was spent in exile
with relatives, mainly in England
without his parents.
His mother was taken to an
asylum when he was nine. After
boarding school, he joined the
Royal Navy and served during
WWII.
Elizabeth and Philip first met at
a royal wedding in 1934, but in
1939 Philip gave 13-year-old
Elizabeth a tour around
Dartmouth Naval College. She
was instantly smitten but,
unsurprisingly, he was courting
older girls. However, he visited
Windsor often and was
entranced by the family feeling
of Christmas there with
Elizabeth in 1943, which his own
life so lacked.
AN UNSUITABLE BOY?
After his posting home in
January 1946, Philip regularly
visited Buckingham Palace,
carrying a picture of Elizabeth
in his bag while she made
noticeably more fuss about her
appearance! In a letter, Philip
wrote that he had “fallen in love
completely and unreservedly.”
But despite Philip’s loyal service
and royal connections, the
courtship wasn’t welcomed by
all. Philip didn’t have the ‘right’
education, clothes or money -
and had sisters married to Nazis.
However, Philip’s uncle, Lord
Mountbatten, worked to change
popular opinion. When Philip
proposed in summer 1946, the
King consented but insisted on
delaying the official announcement
until Elizabeth turned 21.
Philip renounced his Greek and
Danish titles and was merely
Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten
on their official engagement in
July 1947.
Before the wedding, however,
he was made Duke of
Edinburgh, with Elizabeth
becoming Duchess on their
marriage.
MARRIED LIFE
Elizabeth and Philip married at
Westminster Abbey on 20th
November 1947.
A year later their son Charles arrived,
followed by Anne in 1950.
But family life was soon
disrupted. In February 1953,
Philip broke news of the King’s
death to Elizabeth while in
Kenya, and abandoned his naval
career to support her in her new
role. They moved to
Buckingham Palace and
Elizabeth was crowned on
5th June 1953 at Westminster
Abbey, watched by millions on
TV. Andrew and Edward, born
in 1960 and 1964 respectively,
completed their family.
GOLDEN YEARS
Throughout the years, they have
continued to show affection and
support for each other, enjoying
the ups (jubilees, the arrival of
grandchildren and great-grandchildren)
and weathering the
downs (long separations from
their children, family scandals
and divorces, fires; their ‘annus
horribilis’). In a thoughtful
gesture, the Queen gave her
husband the title of Lord High
Admiral, titular head of the
Royal Navy, when he turned 90.
“Their marriage is a true love
story,’’ said former Buckingham
Palace press secretary Dickie
Arbiter.
On their Golden Wedding
anniversary in 1997, they paid
touching tributes to each other.
“He has, quite simply, been
my strength and stay all these
years,” said the Queen.
“Tolerance is the one
essential ingredient in any happy
marriage,” said Prince Philip.
“The Queen has the quality of
tolerance in abundance.”
Cake and
Bake
Chilled Orange
Mousse with Fresh
Orange Glaze
A light, creamy and refreshing dessert that can
be prepared a day in advance. Serve with
crisp butter biscuits or shortbread fingers.
Ingredients:
• 3 gelatine leaves
• 150ml fresh orange juice
• 250g ricotta cheese
• 250g full fat soft cheese
• 100g caster sugar
• 2 tsp orange zest
• 300ml double cream
• 2 egg whites
FOR THE ORANGE GLAZE
• 1 gelatine leaf
• 150ml fresh orange juice
• 2 oranges, peeled, segmented
and flesh chopped
• Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate
Serves 8
Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling
and chilling
TIP Stir a spoonful of warmed fineshred
marmalade into the orange
glaze before it cools for an extra
tangy flavour.
1. Soak the gelatine leaves in a shallow bowl of cold water
for 5 minutes until soft. Heat the orange juice in a small
pan until almost boiling then remove from the heat.
Squeeze the excess liquid from the gelatine leaves
and stir into the hot juice until dissolved. Cool for 15
minutes.
2. Beat the ricotta and cream cheese together in a large
bowl until smooth, then beat in the caster sugar and
orange zest. Fold in the cooled gelatine.
3. Whip the cream in a bowl until softly peaking and in a
separate bowl whisk the egg whites until stiff. Fold the
cream into the orange mixture followed by the egg
whites.
4. Spoon the mixture into a 20cm square baking dish that
is at least 5cm deep. Gently level the surface and chill in
the fridge for 3 hours, or until set.
5. To make the orange glaze, soften the gelatine in cold
water as in step one. Heat the orange juice in a small
pan until almost boiling then remove from the heat.
Squeeze the excess liquid from the gelatine leaf and
stir into the hot juice until dissolved. Cool for 30-40
minutes, stirring occasionally until beginning to thicken.
Pour over the chilled mousse then top with the diced
orange flesh. Chill in the fridge for 2 hours, or until the
glaze has set. Serve cut into squares decorated with
fresh mint sprigs.
A Busy
November
by Pippa Greenwood
It is time for the seasonal
slowdown, as your garden and
most of the plants and animals in
it start to prepare for the colder
months ahead. But, of course this
doesn’t mean to say that you can
start snoozing! There are lots of
jobs which, if done now, could end
up saving you time and money
later on in the season or when
the garden comes back to full life
next spring, so I thought it’d be a
good idea to take a look at the top
November gardening tasks that
you should try to get to grips with.
Get prepared for a relatively
weed-free few months but hoe
off weeds that are around now, as
some might still set seed during
mild, damp periods. Provided they
don’t have any seed pods on them
their top-growth can safely be
composted. Bin, burn or rot down
fleshy weed roots to prevent them
growing in the compost heap!
Flower beds and borders are likely
to have a lot of deteriorating
plants in them now. Cut back or
pick off obviously diseased leaves
and stems, and remove some
of the foliage that is dying back
purely due to the time of year. The
flower beds will look a lot neater
and it’ll give you an insight as to
what might need replacing. Leave
some deteriorating but healthy
foliage in place to provide some
protection for the crowns of the
more fragile plants.
Rabbits can be a menace at the
best of times, but over the next
few months their natural or wild
food supplies are likely to dry up.
This means they will be on the
lookout for some tasty meals from
your garden. Make sure that rabbit
netting is not damaged and that
trees, especially those that have
been planted recently, are fitted
with tree guards.
Rake, rake and rake some more!
That’s what you’ll need to be
doing if there is a sizeable tree
near your lawn. Use a spring-tined
rake and do it on a regular basis
- if you don’t collect up the fallen
leaves they can do quite a lot of
damage to the grass beneath.
Trees, shrubs and climbers that
have been planted over the last
few weeks may need a little
protection over their first winter.
Foliage that will be perfectly
tough and hardy once the plant
is established may well succumb
to frost or cold wind damage
this year. If heavy frosts are
forecast or winds are getting icy,
a layer or two of horticultural
fleece draped over the plant and
pegged in place, should do the
trick, and can be removed on
warmer days. I’ve also got some
great fleece ‘jackets’, complete
with a drawstring and in various
sizes, available from my website
- perfect for easy protection of all
sorts of sizes of plants and shrubs,
see www.pippagreenwood.com/
products/protect-your-crops.
If you’re planning on planting a
hedge, bear in mind that many
hedging plants are far cheaper if
bought ‘bare root field grown’,
meaning they are lifted from
their nursery field without being
potted on. These plants generally
establish and grow really well and
are likely to be available now, but
to make sure you get the pick of
the bunch get your order in now.
Bare root plants are not feasible
once the leaves start to appear
next year.
Send off for a good collection of
seed catalogues and check out the
various websites so that you can
start to look at what you want to
grow next year. Many suppliers
offer seeds and young plants of
many vegetables, so order now
and you can relax, knowing that
you have got your first choice
selection. Check out my website,
www.pippagreenwood.com/
grow-your-own, for a Grow Your
Own package perfect for the less
experienced vegetable grower
- the plants you choose come
with weekly advice emails telling
you exactly what you need to be
doing.
Established clumps of bamboo
should be thinned out now. The
extra space that the remaining
canes will have will allow them to
grow away better, and also gives
them more freedom to move
about in that way which makes
bamboos so very appealing.
Less tender bulbs such as nerines and many of the
agapanthus are more likely to come through the
winter with style if you give them a little protection
now. Mound dry chipped bark or other mulch over
the area in which they are planted.
And last but not least, water butts may not have had
a lot of water going in to them over the last few drier
months, but this is likely to change. Before they fill up
with rain, grab a sturdy brush and clean each one out
thoroughly, removing deposits of algae, soggy bits of
plant and general gunge! Rinse out and then re-install
ready to collect some rain.
Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.
com for a gorgeous selection of useful gardening
items, perfect for gifts too, including growing
frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, fleece jackets,
Finance By Ann Haldon
Should You Invest In Stocks And Shares,
And If So, How Do You Start?
With savings interest rates
at a record low, you may be
considering whether to take a
more adventurous approach with
your money. Purchasing stocks
and shares is one way to do
this – it’s a long-term investment
that can reap benefits if you’re
prepared to take a risk and
branch out from the ‘standard’
savings accounts.
Investing in this way can provide
you with funds you wouldn’t
otherwise accrue, as long as
you’re not looking for a return
in the short-term. So before we
see how to get started, let’s look
at what stocks and shares are in
more detail.
A SMALL PIECE OF A COMPANY
When you purchase shares in
a company, you’re essentially
buying a small part of that
organisation. Limited companies
often issue shares to raise money
on start-up, and also further
down the line if they need
additional funding for expansion,
or a large project, for example.
Stock is the term used to cover
different types of share, of which
ordinary shares, preference
shares, and non-voting shares are
just a few examples.
• Ordinary shares - Also
known as ‘common stock,’
ordinary shares provide you
with a share of a company’s
assets and profits by way of
dividend payments, as well
as voting rights on issues
such as executive pay or the
appointment of directors.
• Preference shares- Dividend
payments are fixed at a certain
rate when you buy preference
shares. There are no voting
rights, but you do receive
payment before holders of
common stock. This is true in
good times and bad – if the
company experiences financial
difficulty, for example, as a
preference shareholder you
would be positioned higher up
the ranking for payment.
• Non-voting shares - These are
ordinary shares that do not
carry voting rights, although in
some instances shareholders
may have the right to vote
under certain circumstances.
WHERE DOES THE VALUE LIE
WHEN INVESTING IN STOCKS
AND SHARES?
The potential value of investing in
stocks and shares is twofold:
Dividend payments
You receive a dividend payment
as long as the company remains
profitable, but the amount you
receive depends on the type of
share you hold. Payments are
usually made twice a year, and
you generally have a choice of
taking the money as cash or
reinvesting it in more shares.
Growth potential
A company’s growth potential
relies on a number of factors,
including:
• Size of their market share.
• Management efficiency and
experience.
• Brand identity and its
popularity with the wider
population.
• Company profits and profit
margins.
The price of shares is driven by
expectation of the company’s
performance. It will rise if there
is significant interest or if traders
have high expectations that the
company will do well, based on
the management/executive team.
HOW DO YOU GET STARTED
WHEN INVESTING IN STOCKS
AND SHARES?
Initially, you should determine
the level of risk you’re willing
to accept. Understanding that
there is always an element of risk,
however small the investment,
and balancing this with the
potential rewards, is a sensible
approach.
There are two types of
investment when it comes to
stocks and shares – direct and
indirect.
Direct investment
This involves choosing the stocks
and shares yourself, rather than
using the services of a broker
or other professional advisor.
It’s likely to be cheaper, but you
won’t receive the expert direction
or guidance that a beginner often
needs.
There are online investment
platforms where you can set
up an account and pay for your
investments as a lump sum,
or ‘drip feed’ payments using
a monthly direct debit. Some
people prefer to make monthly
payments as it can smooth out
market fluctuations and spread
the risk a little.
50 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!

Indirect investment
You can also purchase stocks and
shares through a stockbroker
or financial company. They may
also provide online services for
buying and selling, but you’ll
receive a professional opinion
on the most appropriate
investments based on your
circumstances.
This comes at a cost, of course,
so you need to weigh up the
benefits of receiving expert
advice if your own knowledge
of stock market investment is
minimal.
OTHER ASPECTS TO CONSIDER
IF YOU DECIDE TO INVEST
• You can lower your exposure
to risk by diversifying the
investments.
• It’s generally advised to invest
for a minimum of five years,
but longer if possible.
• Carry out lots of research on
each company prior to making
an investment.
• Compare fees and charges
between providers.
• Regularly review your
investment portfolio.
Investing in stocks and shares
can provide a higher return than
cash that’s held in a savings
account, as long as it’s viewed
as long-term. It can help you
achieve your financial goals
faster, and you also have the
option of choosing stocks and
shares yourself or using an
advisor.
The downsides of this type of
investment include potential
volatility in the market, the fact
that your money is tied up for
the long-term, and that it’s not
risk-free.
So what is your attitude to risk?
Could you see yourself investing
in the stock market?
CR5 Distributor “Tom” earns reward for his honesty
Shortly after the October delivery of CR5 Magazine,
we received a call from a
gentleman in Fairdene Road, Coulsdon advising
that his CR5 distributor had knocked on his
door to hand in a large sum of money found in
his front garden.
CR5 Magazine immediately contacted his
parents to inform them of the contact made.
Tom Laing aged 13, attends Oasis Academy
Coulsdon and delivers the CR5 Magazine with
his sister Rebecca.
Last Saturday I was delivering the CR5 magazines
in Fairdene Road, Coulsdon.
I walked down the pathway towards one of
the houses, with a lawn in the front garden. I
noticed a “wad”of money scattered over the
grass, some of which was wrapped in an elastic
band. I reckon there was about £100 in total.
I rang the bell and a man answered. I explained I
had found the money in his front garden.
He told me his mate
had been at his house
the night before and
must have dropped it
when he left.
He was really grateful
and took the cash
thanking me for being
so honest.
The following day the
man rang our home
and spoke to my Dad as he wanted to give me
a reward. I was really pleased as he gave me a
tenner for being so honest.
I am putting the money towards new golf
equipment.
CONGRATULATIONS Tom, you should be very
proud of yourself; you deserve every penny of
your reward.
CR5 Magazine are very proud of you :-)
“Honeydew melon…a little smell
of cream…it reminds you of lying
in bed upstairs and having a tiny
waft of someone marvellous
having made you breakfast downstairs.
You get that smell of toast
and butter…”
These are the words of wine
expert Jilly Goolden, describing the
aroma of a Chenin Blanc wine to a
Guardian reporter at the launch of
the wine-tasting courses she runs
at her Sussex home.
While some readers may find Jilly’s
descriptions a tad over the top,
most wine lovers would probably
admire her ability to find so
many different sensations packed
into one sniff of vintage white.
Since she first appeared on our
TV screens in the 1980s, Jilly has
waxed lyrical about wines of every
age, colour and price. She believes
that drinkers who simply quaff a
bottle without dwelling on its finer
points are “probably missing out
50% of what it [the wine] has to say
to you.”
WHAT DOES WINE TASTING
INVOLVE?
Wine tasting is the practice of using
the senses of touch, sight and
smell to evaluate different wines.
It is believed that the first wines
were produced in Mesopotamia
- an ancient region that included
present day Iraq and Kuwait together
with parts of Syria and Turkey
- between 4,000 and 3,000 BC.
By the time of the Roman Empire,
the production of wine had spread
throughout the Mediterranean,
even as far as the British Isles.
The ancient Romans were particularly
passionate about their wines,
realising that the more a wine was
allowed to mature, the better it
tasted. They were also the first to
introduce wooden barrels, glass
bottles and corks to preserve the
precious liquid. It’s more than
likely, therefore, that the first wine
tasters were slaves employed by
Hobbies
Bottoms Up! Let’s Toast This Terrific Tasting
Hobby
their masters to check that wines
were drinkable (and also, possibly,
to ensure that they hadn’t been
poisoned by their enemies!)
Although unofficial methods of
wine tasting have been around
for thousands of years, it was not
until the 14th century that more
formalised ways of sampling and
evaluating wines began to emerge.
The rules put in place at that time
have since evolved into a craft
with its own precise language
and methods. If you’re taking up
wine-tasting as a hobby, you won’t
be obliged to use the specialised
terminology employed by today’s
professional wine-tasters and
sommeliers, but you will need to
follow some basic rules to help you
identify the particular characteristics
of the wine you are sampling.
THE FOUR STAGES OF WINE
TASTING
The first phase in the four recognised
stages of wine-tasting is
appearance. The liquid is examined
to see how well it reflects or refracts
light, whether it is cloudy or
clear, and how much the process
of oxidisation over time might
have affected its colour.
The wine’s smell (also known as
its “nose”) is then judged. Tasters
must attempt to describe the
perfume it gives off, as determined
by its “aromas” and “bouquets”.
“Aroma” refers to the smell of the
specific grape - or combination of
grapes - used, while “bouquet”
refers to the scent created as the
wine matures.
To judge the taste, swirl the wine
around your mouth so your taste
buds can do their work. As well as
teasing out the specific flavours
of the wine, you’ll be considering
the amount of sweetness and/
or tartness you find. You might
also want to judge the amount of
astringency (bitterness caused by
the tannin in grape skins) you can
detect. Overall, you’ll be looking
66 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
By Kate McLelland
for “balance” in the wine, deciding
whether all its components are in
harmony.
The final part of the process is to
consider the impression left on
your tongue when you have either
swallowed or used a spittoon to
clear the wine from your palate.
At this stage you’ll be able to tell a
well-made wine by its crisp, clean
finish: poor quality wines often
leave a watery and insubstantial
aftertaste. The best quality wines
leave a “long finish”: that’s a
flavour that remains in the mouth
after the wine has gone.
HOW DO I START?
If you’re not sure how to kick off
your wine-tasting hobby, an online
search will lead you to a number
of excellent courses, taking place
nationwide. On the jobs and training
website run by the Reed Group
you’ll find a short online course
costing £97 (visit the Hospitality
and Catering section at reed.
co.uk for details), alternatively Jilly
Goolden herself runs wine-tasting
afternoons under the title “The
Wine Room” at £125 per person,
taking place in the Ashdown
Forest, East Sussex (telephone
01342 822251 or email wineroom@
jillygoolden.com).
As you develop confidence you’ll
be able to explore some of the 400
or more commercial vineyards that
operate in the UK. Visit England
has a list of vineyards, many of
which are open to the public, offering
luxury on-site accommodation
in B&Bs and self-catering accommodation
so you can relax and
make the most of your wine-tasting
experience (visitengland.com).
Whether you’re planning to
become the next Jilly Goolden or
simply someone who loves to explore
the subtleties and complexities
of wine, you’re certain to find
a course or vineyard experience to
suit. Bottoms up!

The Scars of Life
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and
learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is
easy and my burden is light”. Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
Following a heart bypass operation some years ago, I
now have a scar from just below my collarbone down
to the centre of my chest, a long scar on my left leg
from my ankle to mid thigh, and a short scar on my
lower left arm. The scars are from where they take
veins to bypass the blocked coronary arteries. The
chest scar is where your chest is opened to give the
medical team access to your heart.
As they are physical scars they have faded almost
completely, but they will always be visible. But how
many people do we meet who have emotional and
spiritual scars that we can’t see? Emotional scars
from a bad childhood, a difficult time at school, from
the loss of a parent through divorce or death, from a
bad environment at home or work? Perhaps
emotional scars from alcoholism, drug misuse,
financial pressures or health problems. Or even
spiritual scars from being force fed religion, or
constantly being told that they are sinners and will
go to hell.
How can people heal invisible emotional or spiritual
scars? One way is by asking God to heal them spiritually
and emotionally. The bible verse above invites
us all to seek rest from God when we are weary or
burdened. Even more specifically 1 Peter 5.6-7 says,
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty
We know that an
electrical fault can occur
anytime day or night;
that's why we will always
have an electrician on
stand-by ready to solve
the problem
hand, that He may lift you up in due time.
Cast all your anxiety on him because
He cares for you.”
In essence, God is inviting you to hand over your
problems to him and let him take care of them with
you. Sometimes the response is virtually immediate,
sometimes it will take a longer period, maybe even
years, but God will hear and he will respond.
Emotional and mental scars can be very deep and
taking them to God may seem a strange thing to
do, but it could be your first step to healing them.
How then does that relate to using medical
professionals or trained counselors to treat severe
depression, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, or even
mental problems? The answer is that they may be the
very people God uses to help you. When the bible
says God is love in 1 John 4:7-8, not only is it revealing
God’s character, his innermost being, but it is also
telling you that God loves you right now - whoever
you are and whatever you have done in the past.
Are you ready to respond?
Prayer: Loving Father, people are like peaches,
needing gentle handling to avoid being bruised, but
so often in this world today we are battered by life.
Please reveal your gentle caring love to those who
need spiritual or emotional healing. In Jesus name
we pray. Amen
History
The History of Chocolate By Catherine Rose
Our favourite confectionary,
chocolate dates back four
thousand years. Originating in
Central America, indigenous
Indian tribes first produced an
antecedent very different to
today’s.
Although debated, the word
chocolate is said to come from
the Mayan term ‘xocalatl’
meaning ‘bitter water’.
It was the Mayans who first
cultivated the cacao plant that
grew in the rainforests of
Mesoamerica - an area that
today encompasses Mexico,
Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala
and Honduras. They fermented,
roasted and ground the beans
of the plant into a paste that
they would mix with water
and spices to produce a potent
frothy bitter liquor. Drunk cold,
it was used as an aphrodisiac
and believed to have magical
mood-enhancing properties.
On conquering the Mayans,
the Aztecs - who lived in the
mountains where cacao did not
grow naturally - demanded a
tax in cacao seeds so that they
could control and cultivate
the beans themselves. Cacao
seeds became a currency for
the Aztecs and were used to
buy everything from produce to
prostitutes!
The Aztecs believed that the
cacao plant was a gift from
their god Quetzalcoatl - the god
of creation and wisdom. Their
chocolate and chilli drink was
so precious, it was reserved for
those of importance such as
rulers, warriors and priests, and
often drunk from gold vessels
during religious ceremonies.
Women were not permitted
to partake as the effects were
considered too potent.
When the Spanish conquered
the region in the 1500s, one
Jesuit missionary described it as
follows:
“…Loathsome to such as are
not acquainted with it, having
a scum or froth that is very unpleasant
to taste. Yet it is a drink
very much esteemed among the
Indians, where with they feast
noble men who pass through
their country… which they say
is good for the stomach and
against the catarrh.”
Because it was so valued, the
Spanish conquistadors took
chocolate back to Spain where
they added sugar to sweeten
the fermented drink and it was
enjoyed by nobility. Soon the
custom of drinking chocolate
had spread to the rest of Europe.
Chocolate houses sprang
up and cocoa plantations were
grown in tropical regions of the
various colonies.
It wasn’t until 1828 that the
solid sweet chocolate we know
and love today was invented.
Casparus van Houten, who had a
factory in Amsterdam producing
drinking chocolate, invented
the hydraulic cocoa press which
separated the cocoa butter
(contained in the bean’s nib)
from the cocoa mass. This mass
was then ground to produce cocoa
powder which became the
basis for modern chocolate.
Casparus’ son Coenraad van
Houten, a chemist, continued
his father’s work, adding
alkaline salts to remove the
naturally bitter taste. By using
the ‘Dutching method’ that combined
the cocoa powder with
water, cocoa butter and sugar
and then heating it, Coenraad
could produce a thick chocolate
paste that was poured into
moulds where it hardened into a
delicious confectionary.
Van Houten’s patent expired in
1836, allowing other companies
to start manufacturing their
own brands of edible chocolate.
In 1847 J.S. Fry & Sons
produced the first commercial
solid chocolate bar in England.
Although it was not as palatable
as the chocolate we eat today
(it would have been more bitter
and slightly gritty), people were
enthralled by the new confectionary.
Meanwhile John Cadbury had
opened a small shop in Birmingham
selling cocoa powder in
1824. A Quaker, he believed
cocoa was a healthy alternative
to alcohol. Six years later he set
up his first factory producing 16
diverse types of drinking chocolate
in both powder and pressed
cake form.
In 1866, the year that Fry’s
started marketing their eponymous
Fry’s Chocolate Cream,
Cadbury’s sons Richard and
George, philanthropists who had
inherited their father’s business,
purchased one of van Houten’s
cocoa presses. They began
producing boxes of chocolates,
although these were expensive
and only bought by the well-off
or for special occasions. In 1875,
Cadbury’s unveiled its dark
chocolate Easter egg filled with
chocolate dragees, and towards
the end of the century began to
produce its first chocolate bars.
The Swiss have long been at
the forefront of chocolate-making
and in the same year that
Cadbury’s launched its Easter
egg, the first milk chocolate bar
was made by a Swiss confectioner
named Daniel Peter after
he added condensed milk to
the chocolate-making process.
Then in 1879, Rodolphe Lindt
invented the conching machine
in Switzerland. The machine
agitated the chocolate mixture
and revolutionised the texture
of chocolate, making a much
smoother, more velvety paste.
The early part of the 20th century
saw an explosion in the availability
of chocolate to the public
with names that are still popular
100 years later. Cadbury’s Dairy
Milk was launched in 1905 with
the claim that it had more milk in
it than any other chocolate bar.
In 1914, Fry’s Turkish Delight was
launched. Then in 1915, Milk Tray
came onto the market, aiming
to be the first box of chocolates
to be readily affordable.
Four years later, Cadbury’s
bought out Fry’s and has since
gone on to become a market
leader in chocolate manufacture,
research and development.
Today, chocolate-making has
become an art.
Preparation is everything
I am sitting in a draughty exam hall; a crisp
white exam paper resting on the wooden
desk in front of me. A voice calls out “You
may now turn over the paper” and the echo
clings to the air. The sense of anticipation is
palpable. I reach out and turn over the paper
and realise, to my horror, that I am sitting an
exam in a subject I have never studied! How
could this be? What have I missed? Panic
stricken I wake up and realise that it was only
a dream.
Now the above may sound like the synopsis
of a novel written by a young child; however
it is one of those strange dreams that I have
once in a while. Perhaps such an admission
casts light into the depths of my inner-psyche;
more likely it is simply a reflection on my revision
style as a student!
There is little worse than feeling unprepared.
Being prepared was considered important
enough to become the motto of the Scout
Movement. However; it is hard to predict
what is needed in many situations and so
often a Swiss Army Knife and a survival
blanket just aren’t enough!
I am not sure I have an answer to mankind’s
inability to think ahead but I do have a
question which this issue raises. Namely, have
you thought ahead? We tend to live our lives
in the moment, perhaps occasionally
sparing a thought to the future. It is all too
easy to avoid thinking about the purpose of
our existence and, crucially, what happens
when we die.
In the Bible Jesus tells a story of ten young
women who are invited to a banquet. All ten
bring lamps with them but only five bring
extra oil. The party is delayed and the five
who were unprepared go back to get more
oil. Whilst they are gone the party begins
and they miss their opportunity to attend.
Now this may sound quaint and archaic; but
underneath there is a call to be prepared for
the future and not to miss out on the joys of
heaven.
If you have never thought about the future
in this way I would encourage you to do so.
The book of Matthew in the Bible is a good
place to start, and you may want to talk to a
Christian you know or make contact with a
local church.
Whatever you do this November, be
prepared!
‘Europe should stop feeling guilty about its
colonial past’ proposed Angela Applin, defining
‘colonisation’ (settler colonies e.g. America) and
colonialism (e.g. ruling the native people). Europe’s
feeling guilty may be prompted by murmurings
from some ex-colonial nations of reparations, and
the recent student demand for the removal of a
statue of Cecil Rhodes from Oriel College Oxford,
as an ‘act of decolonisation’. Decolonisation here
refers to the "decolonising of the mind" from the
colonisers' ideas that made the native people feel
inferior. Mr. Rhodes’ was a strong believer in the
superiority of the Anglo-Saxon race, arguing that
"the native is to be treated as a child”. Now, ‘mind
decolonising’ is present in many African universities,
and some black students in the UK claim
that studies are too ‘white-focused’. This reaction
seems strange, but most European colonies did
not become independent until as late as the mid-
20th. century, coinciding with changing attitudes
in Europe. There can be no doubt that whilst
white colonials ruled by subjugation, exploitation,
denigration, there were benefits to colonisation.
The British provided political unity to India, not
achieved at any stage in her past history, through
the development of railways and a uniform system
of administration. This unity paved the way for the
growth of political consciousness amongst people
and ultimately motivated them to overthrow the
colonial and imperialist yoke. Western colonialism
in Asia and Africa introduced ideas like nationalism,
democracy, constitutionalism etc. Colonialism also
brought the building of hospitals and schools, often
financed by the various missionaries, anxious to
convert the ‘heathen’. Desmond Tutu explained:
‘When the missionaries arrived, they had the Bible,
we had the land. ‘Let us close our eyes and pray’
said the missionaries. When we opened our eyes,
we had the Bible, they had the land.” It is easy to
decry the colonial atrocities committed by greedy,
ruthless men, but today’s world has been created
by colonialism. The spread of Islam changed the
East, the violent Mongol incursions opened the Silk
Road through China, the collapse of the Roman Empire
created an influx of warlike Germanic settlers.
We are English because of Anglo-Saxon colonialism
and the French are French because of the colonising
Franks. Colonialism continues, as large numbers of
refugees from war and poverty flood into Europe.
And it’s a dual process. The ideas and liberalism of
the West are trickling down, gathering momentum,
into the hearts and minds of conservative Islam. The
once ferociously Socialist China is prospering under
a vigorous, if carefully monitored, capitalist system.
Colonial acquisitiveness, aggression, greed, cruelty
are perhaps part of the nature of man. But finally,
Europe’s colonial history is just history. We should
stop feeling guilty and let it go.
Opposer Nick Jupp questioned the word ‘guilt’;
surely, he said this is an extreme and inaccurate way
to describe our feelings about our colonial history,
even though many European countries seem to
chastise themselves for their plundering, slavery,
exploitation of colonial territories and other misdeeds.
But Europe cannot stop feeling guilty; guilt
is a permanent fact, not a transient feeling. Like
Angela, however, Nick also noted that, juxtaposed
to the massive benefits for the colonising power,
were valuable advantages for the colonies. Nick
also examined the damage done by 19th/20th century
colonialism. It was exploitative and destroyed
the country’s economic sustainablilty, it suppressed
self-determination, it deprived people of their
national identity, it is often racist and supremacist.
However, it was the ill-treatment of native peoples
that offers the most shocking indictment of colonialism;
slavery, starvation, disease, torture were
routine. In the UK alone, we have profited from
colonialism, stripping countries of their wealth and
pride.
We cannot count the cost of compensation, although
cancelling Third World debt might help.
Nick then outlined some of the most appalling
incidents in British colonialism. In the 1919 Amritsar
Massacre, British Indian Army troops fired on peaceful
Sikh Baisakhi pilgrims and nationalist protesters
for 10 minutes, ‘officially’ killing 379 and wounding
1,200. In the Second Boer War,
a vicious scorched-earth policy and the establishment
of ‘concentration camps’ by the British
exterminated thousands of Boers and Africans. The
infamous 1916 Easter Rising will long be remembered
in Ireland for the sheer brutality of British
soldiers against the Irish Volunteers and the Irish
Citizen Army. Nick also mentioned British atrocities
in Malaya and Kenya. Nick concluded that it may be
hard to excuse our colonial misdeeds, but he did
not think Europe should apologise. But we should
recognise our appalling legacy – as well as celebrating
our achievements.
We need not feel guilty, but we should learn from
the shameful colonialism of the past.
The motion was won by 7 votes to 4 with 1 abstention.
On November 6th., Society members Angela
Local author 's unique theory to the identity of
Jack the Ripper.
Coulsdon has long had an extremely
tenuous connection to the Ripper
murders, in that a suspect― from fairly
long list of suspects― may have been
detained in Cane Hill.
However, Coulsdon now has a much
stronger connection in the form of local
author, Bill Perring, whose novel
The Seduction of Mary Kelly
incorporates a new and radical take on
the identity and motive of the killer.
"I've always been sceptical about the proposed
candidates for Jack the Ripper―many of them
famous figures: royalty; artists; a royal surgeon;
even Alice in Wonderland author, Lewis Carroll,
has been put forward.
True there are also suspects who
were ordinary people, but, to the
best of my knowledge, always
people of whom there is some
documented knowledge, be it
through their business dealings,
association with the
investigations at the time, or
simply family history.
This makes perfect sense, because even a
factual book needs to name someone, but to my
mind, in light of recent history, the more likely
truth is that if the killer had been caught
it would have been someone completely
unknown up until that moment.
In a novel, of course, one can address this
matter satisfactorily, which I hope I have done,
though the identity of Jack was never my main
focus in writing this book.
The
Seduction
of
Mary Kelly
Little is known about Mary Jane Kelly, the
supposed final victim of the Whitechapel
murderer, but what little is known does indeed
make for exciting speculation, and that is
exactly what we are given in The Seduction of
Mary Kelly.
In a sprawling 591 page saga, Mr Perring puts us
right alongside Mary as she moves from a harsh
and troubled childhood in rural Wales, to the
mean streets of Cardiff , then on to the dizzying
heights of society―before the fall from grace
that sees her languishing, destitute, in what
was described at the time as 'the worst street
in London'.
"How could anyone not be fascinated by such a
roller-coaster of a life?"
How indeed, and while I would not
dream of giving away any of the
twists and turns, nor the
surprising, yet quite feasible,
identity of 'Jack', I can say that
though I approached the book with
some trepidation, fearing it might
prove an unrelentingly grim read,
the abundance of humour, and
even romance make the experience
not only compelling, but unexpectedly uplifting.
As a special offer to CR5 readers, this hardback
book is available at almost half the retail price.
For details see the advert to the right.
It is also available on Kindle from Amazon.
There have been numerous entertaining
fictional concoctions that bear only a passing
resemblance to the people and events involved
in that Autumn of Terror. This always puzzled
me, because at the heart of the Ripper mystery
lies a life far more fascinating than any of the
previous imaginings of fiction writers and film
makers―and I wanted to fully explore this life,
whilst adhering faithfully to historical fact."
Honda’s
Automatic
Africa Twin Is
A Commuter’s
Dream
Honda has fitted an automatic
DCT gearbox to its Africa Twin
endurance machine. James
Baggott reports on life with
the 998cc continent crosser.
Honda’s Africa Twin has gained
a cult following – and rightly
so. It’s a do-it-all enduro bike
that’s not only comfortable, but
incredibly capable too.
We’ve been riding the
firm’s latest model with the
revolutionary automatic DCT
transmission for a few months
now and soon discovered it’s a
staple commuting tool.
If you’re already a fan of
enduro-style bikes, the
seating position and handling
characteristics will be very
familiar. The relatively small
screen does cause a bit of
buffeting, but the sit-up-andbeg
style riding position works
brilliantly in town.
I’ve ridden the 998cc parallel
twin cylinder machine to
London and back to the South
Coast six times now and found
that the seat does get a little
uncomfortable after an hour or
so – at 6’4’’ I am just a little too
big for the Honda.
However, that said, when the
stop-start traffic bites, the
Africa Twin makes for a brilliant
gap-finding tool. The light
steering and automatic gearbox
in ‘sport’ setting transforms it
into a scooter-like commuter,
darting for gaps.
The test bike has the optional
hard luggage fitted – both top
box and panniers at a cost of
£920. Sounds pricey, but they’re
impressively capacious, thought
they do make the Africa Twin
rather wide.
On the road, the Honda handles
neutrally. Leaning over hard
might make you question the
available grip; however, that
could be down to the tyres. I’ve
also noticed the standard forks
on the front dip considerably
under braking – if you’re used
to BMW’s telelever setup on
the GS, this bike’s main rival, it
takes some getting used to.
The engine develops 94bhp and
98Nm of torque which feels
perfectly punchy enough. The
real talking point is the DCT
automatic gearbox though. For
those of you unfamiliar with
the setup, the Africa Twin in
this guise has no gear pedal
and the lever for the clutch isn’t
for the clutch at all – instead it
operates a handbrake, and is
positioned sensibly far enough
away that you won’t end up
pulling it unintentionally. Once
you’re used to it, you’ll soon be
enjoying the break your left arm
and foot get. As a hardened
biker I never thought it would
be something I’d enjoy riding
quite as much as I do.
There are a few niggles though.
I’ve found the fuel tank a little
on the small side. At just 18.8
litres it’s not nearly enough
for a bike capable of long
distances, and frustratingly
won’t get me the 160 mile
round trip to London and
back without refuelling. I’ve
also found the centre stand a
little precarious. It’s hard to
get your motorcycle boot-clad
foot between the frame and
stand to push it down sturdily
enough. That might have
something to do with my big
feet and correspondingly large
boots, but it’s still annoying.
Those minor gripes aside,
I’m finding the Africa Twin
to be a brilliant companion.
Its combination of solid build
quality and capability in a
variety of circumstances makes
it the perfect bike to tackle
our congested roads in pretty
much all weathers. And if
you’re doubting that automatic
transmission – give it a try, you
might just like it as much as me.
Bird’s Eye View, November 2017
John Birkett, RSPB Croydon Local Group
With the days getting noticeably shorter,
winter weather cannot be far behind. This is
probably about the best time to check any
bird boxes and clean them out as necessary
(ensuring that you wear gloves in case there
are any parasites or other nasties in there)
and use an animal friendly disinfectant. Not
only will they be ready for the next breeding
season they may even be used as a roosting
site for small birds during the winter. Wrens
have been known to do this and there is a
remarkable record of over 60 birds flying out
of a nest box one winter morning! And please
remember to keep supplying a variety of
foods such as nuts, seeds, fat balls and apples.
Shorter days mean less rime for feeding so a
ready supply in your garden could literally be
a life saver. Should we get a cold spell please
ensure that the water in your bird bath is
replaced if it freezes over.
The first Redwings arrived in Croydon at
the end of September/early October, but
November sees the main arrival of them and
Fieldfares.
You may wake up to find them devouring
berries on your shrubs or feasting on windfall
apples. There is also a good chance that
finches will come into your garden more
frequently as they arrive from northern
Europe and the common species could be
accompanied by Bramblings or Redpolls.
If you see anything interesting you can
contact me by email on
johnbirkett@hotmail.co.uk or, better still,
come along to one of our meetings.
