From The Publisher...
Vikki, Brutus and Shelby
As fall begins to fade away to the
past, we set our clocks back, and the
night comes early, we are reminded
of what lies ahead in the Sandhills.
The fall events, outdoor concerts,
festivals and activities are behind us
now, and we welcome the new season
with excitement.
Thanksgiving with all of the family
activities is on the horizon as we celebrate
the day with lots of turkey and
football.
The Christmas Season begins earlier
and earlier every year and will be in
full swing very shortly. We will be
attending Christmas parties even
before the turkey is all gone.
Veterans Day will be celebrated beginning
on the 29th of October with
the “Stroke of Patriotism” and formally
ending on the 12th this year.
Make sure to attend the myriad of
Upcoming events include the “Festival
of Trees”, lighting up downtown
Southern Pines and many other Holiday
Festivities taking place throughout
the Sandhills.
Please make a donation to the charitable
foundation of your choice
which serve all of our beautiful
Moore County. Less fortunate families
are in need and we all should
volunteer or contribute generously
this Holiday Season.
Our sincerest thanks to Megan
Hunt of Gulley’s Garden Center and
Martha Gentry of the ReMax Home
Selling Team, for making the Home
Beautifi cation contest possible this
year. We had many votes with the
homes submitted and Mr. and Mrs.
Marsh of 169 Hunter Trail received
Our gratitude to those advertisers
that have supported us to make
Saturday is Veterans Day.
We celebrate Veterans Day on
the day the guns fell silent in
Europe following the armistice
that ended World War I.
For some, it’s a day off from
school or work, but for the majority
of Americans, it means so
much more.
On the 11th hour of the 11th
day of the 11th month of 1918
an armistice between Germany
and the Allied nations came
into effect. In 1919, there were
plans for parades, public meetings
and a brief suspension of
business activities at 11am.
Veterans Day is the chance to
thank and honor those who
have selfl essly served their
country.
In increasing numbers, veterans
are returning that support
by continuing their service to
their communities and country.
The term “veteran” is a person
who has served honorably in
the U.S. military. He or she can
be a citizen who served for four
years and leaves the service at
the ripe old age of 24.
In the Revolutionary War, many
soldiers were promised cattle
when their term of service
ended. There was no system
for pensions, death benefi ts, or
disability payments.
This national disinterest toward
veterans continued with
relatively minor reforms until
the Civil War, when President
Abraham Lincoln explicitly mentioned
supporting them after
the war.
Fast forward to World War I.
Large groups of veterans returned
from overseas; some
with major needs. But the largest
change in America’s treatment
of its veterans came after
World War II, which was pivotal
in improving the relationship
between veterans and their
government.
The G.I. Bill of Rights, which
included easy access to education,
mortgages, and provisions
for health care. The Servicemen’s
Readjustment Act of
1944 fundamentally changed
the composition of the American
workforce by enabling
an unprecedented number of
American veterans to attend
college and trade schools.
But there is another dynamic,
and one that has a psychological
impact on veterans and the
country as a whole. This is the
phenomenon we experienced
with Vietnam and Korea—two
unpopular wars with the American
people.
Veterans from the Korean and
Vietnam wars were largely
ignored or worse by average
Americans and they struggled
immensely upon their discharge.
That was an unfortunate period
in our nation’s history, because
those men and women had
served their country during a
time of war and deserved to be
treated with respect when they
returned home.
Fortunately, today things are
markedly different. Over
40,000 nonprofi t organizations
now exist to support the
military or veterans. Today’s
veterans are among our most
community-oriented citizens.
Studies show that they volunteer
an average of 160 hours
annually, 25 percent more than
nonveterans.
Veterans belong to civic groups
and attend neighborhood meetings,
often assuming leadership
roles.
Veterans Day is a special day
where we pause to celebrate
those who have served, and in
many cases continue to serve,
our great country.
What started as a ‘Wine and
and the Railhouse Brewery,
developed into an evening of
purpose. It’s often that great
the vision for Patriotic Expressions
began. How could local
it into something that could
As that creative team sat over
shared the small, everyday
Don’t Burn
The Turkey
National statistics show that
leaving stoves and burners
unattended while cooking is
the leading cause of holiday
fi res, part of the reason why
fi refi ghters respond to more
incidents during Thanksgiving
and Christmas than any other
time of year, according to a
news release from the Las
Cruces Fire Department.
The fi re department reminds
holiday chefs to use caution
when preparing their holiday
feast and recommends
following these and other safety
tips:
• Start with a clean cooking
area and keep the area well
maintained.
• Keep the cooking area off
limits to children and pets.
• Limit the number of people
cooking to avoid crowding
and accidents.
• Avoid wearing loose clothing
and jewelry that could
interfere with cooking.
• Never leave stoves or
ovens — indoor or outdoor
— unattended. Turn off all
burners and other devices
when leaving the cooking
area.
• Deep-frying a turkey is
popular but there are
unique dangers that come
along with this method
of cooking and extra
precautions should be
taken:
• Never use a turkey fryer
indoors, in a garage, on
a porch or on any other
surface that can catch fi re.
It is recommended you
place the fryer a minimum
of 10 feet from all surfaces
and structures, including
walls and fences.
• Ensure the hose connecting
the fryer to the propane
tank is free from cracks,
and long enough to keep
the tank and fryer a safe
distance away from each
other.
• Avoid fi lling the pot with too
much cooking oil as the
turkey will displace some oil.
• Be sure that the turkey is
completely thawed. Slowly
place and remove turkey
from fryer. Avoid dropping or
quickly removing turkey and
wear gloves while using a
fryer.
• Do not leave fryer
unattended and monitor oil
temperature regularly.
• In the event of fi re, call
911. Avoid using water to
extinguish grease or oil fi res.
• Follow all directions and
safety measures included
with the burner and fryer.
Keep a fi re extinguisher handy
and know how to properly use
it.
How To Be Wealthy
Here’s the trick to ‘becoming
wealthy,’ says author who
studies millionaires
Getting rich is about more than
making a lot of money — it’s
about managing the money you
have.
Tom Corley, author of “Rich
Kids: How to Raise Our Children
to Be Happy and Successful in
Life,” has a formula for that.
He goes by the 80:20 rule,
which suggests that you live off
of 80 percent of your paycheck
and save the rest.
“It’s a simple rule, really,” he
writes in the book. “[It] requires
that you set aside 20 percent
of every paycheck and learn
to live off the remaining 80
percent.
You do this no matter how
much money you make.
“If you stick to the 80:20
rule,” he adds, “you will save
a lot of money and you’ll be
retirement age.”
spending, Corley has a few
suggestions:
Don’t spend more than 25
percent of your monthly net pay
on housing.
It doesn’t matter if you own or
rent.
Don’t spend more than 10
percent of your monthly net pay
on entertainment.
This includes movies,
restaurants and bars.
To cut costs, cancel your
subscriptions to unused
streaming services or
magazines.
And, if you’re headed out, have
a meal or glass of wine at home
to avoid overspending on both
dinner and drinks.
Don’t spend more than 5
percent of your monthly net pay
on auto loans, and never lease.
Buy your cars and take good
care of them.
Stay away from accumulating
credit card debt. If you are
doing this, it means you are
living beyond your means and
need to cut back.
Always invest your savings.
Never gamble your savings on
get-rich-quick schemes.
Identity theft is an epidemic,
according to TransUnion, 19
people fall victim to identity
theft every minute. Here are
the top ten myths about identity
theft and, more importantly, the
truth.
Myth 1: Identity theft is a victimless
crime.
According to TransUnion, it
takes the average victim an
estimated $500 and 30 hours
to resolve each identity theft
crime.
According to the FBI, a single
scam can destroy a company,
cost investors billions of dollars,
or wipe out a family’s life
savings.
Myth 2: Identity theft is just a
fi nancial crime.
While most criminals are after
your hard-earned money, many
others have additional ulterior
motives.
Criminal identity theft occurs
when a person abuses faulty or
stolen identifi cation to evade
the law.
Medical identity theft, involves
a criminal lying to receive medical
treatment and insurance
benefi ts.
Employment fraud involves a
criminal using a stolen Social
Security number to secure a job
and benefi ts.
Myth 3: My personal information
(address, etc.) is not valuable
to a thief.
Thieves will fi nd a way to abuse
To keep all of your sensitive information
safe, adopt the habit
of only providing information
on a need-to-know basis. Businesses
often ask for personal
information they do not need.
Stop oversharing.
Myth 4: Social networking is
safe.
Speaking of oversharing, social
networks are a part of daily life.
Selfi es, brunch check-ins, new
friends, and “likes” all help
defi ne our online identities,
but these carefree details can
also be harvested by thieves to
affect your real life. More than
half of teens and young adults
admit to being cyberbullied.
Myth 5: Identity theft criminals
don’t know their victims.
While credit card theft often
comes as a result of a massive,
publicized data breach, other
types of identity theft can be
caused by trusted friends, family,
and coworkers.
Be extremely wary about sharing
your usernames, passwords,
or fi nancial account
information with people you
know.
Myth 6: I would immediately
know if my identity was stolen.
Checking credit card statements
on a monthly basis is not
enough to protect your identity.
Thieves usually want to open
and abuse new accounts that
would never appear on your
US Military Entrepreneurs
Veteran entrepreneurs are
emerging as one of the fastest
growing segments of new
entrepreneurs.
According to a recent Small
Business Administration
(SBA) study there are approximately
4.2 to 5.5 million
veteran-owned businesses in
the United States.
The study further revealed
that 22% of veterans are
either considering starting
or purchasing a business in
the near future or are in the
business start up or purchase
phase now.
accounting to supply chain
management and so on and
so on.
One organization that is
working hard to promote
entrepreneurship among
Veterans is the Veteran’s
Corporation. Headquartered
in Alexandria, Virginia,
the Veteran’s Corporation
bills itself as “the complete
business source for current
and prospective Veterans
and Service-Disabled Veteran
business owners, and
for companies interested in
working with Veteran-owned
businesses.”
The SBA study was done as a
result of The Veterans Entrepreneurship
and Small Business
Development Act the
study found that:
More than one-third of “new
veteran-entrepreneurs” and
current veteran business
owners had obtained skills
from their active duty service
that were directly relevant to
business ownership.
This should come as no surprise
when you consider the
intensity of the training and
the emphasis on discipline
that comes with military
training.
Over the course of their career
the typical longer-term
Veteran receives at least
cursory training in everything
from time management
to employee relations
to supervisory techniques
to dealing with subordinates
(employees) to budgeting and
Success Is Hard
Failure Is Easy !
The Veterans Corporation
serves transitioning military
personnel and all Veterans
of the U.S. Armed Forces,
National Guard and Reserve,
seeking to link them with
partners and purchasing
agents in both the public and
private sectors.
Members will find assistance
in securing capital for
a business, entrepreneurial
education, access to markets
Tips for Strong,
Secure Passwords
A strong password is your fi rst
line of defense against intruders
and imposters.
Never give out your password to
anyone. Never give it to friends,
even if they’re really good
friends.
Don’t just use one password.
It’s possible that someone
working at a site where you use
that password could pass it
on or use it to break into your
accounts at other sites.
Create passwords that are easy
to remember but hard for others
to guess.
When possible, use a phrase
such as “I started 7th grade at
Lincoln Middle School in 2010”
and use the initial of each word
like this: “Is7gaLMSi#2010.”
On some sites you might even
be able to type in the entire
phrase.
Make the password at least 8
characters long. The longer the
better. Longer passwords are
harder for thieves to crack.
Include numbers, capital letters
and symbols. Consider using a
$ instead of an S or a 1 instead
of an L.
Don’t use dictionary words.
There’s even software that
criminals use that can guess
words used in dictionaries.
Don’t post it in plain sight. This
might seem obvious but studies
have found that a lot of people
post their password on their
monitor with a sticky note. Very
very bad idea.
Programs or web services like
Lastpass (Windows and Mac)
let you create a different very
strong password for each of
your sites.
But you only have to remember
the one password to access the
program.
Don’t fall for “phishing” attacks.
Be very careful before clicking
on a link (even if it appears to
be from a legitimate site) asking
you to log in, change your
password or provide any other
personal information.
Make sure your devices are
secure. The best password in
the world might not do you any
good if someone is looking over
your shoulder while you type
or if you forget to log out on a
cybercafe computer.
Malicious software, including
“keyboard loggers” that record
all of your keystrokes, has been
used to steal passwords and
other information.
To increase security, make
sure you’re using up-to-date
anti-malware software and that
your operating system is up-todate.
Use a “password” or fi ngerprints
for your phone too. Most
phones can be locked so that
the only way to use them is to
type in a code, typically a string
of numbers or maybe a pattern
you draw on the screen.
Sometimes when people with
bad intentions fi nd unlocked
phones, they use them to steal
the owners’ information, make
a lot of calls, or send texts that
look like they’re coming from
the owner.
TIC-TAC PUZZLE
TIC-TAC RULES
BATTLESHIP PUZZLE
BATTLESHIP RULES
Each Battleship puzzle represents an ocean with a hidden fleet of ships,
which may be oriented horizontally or vertically within the grid such
that no ship touches another, not even diagonally.
The numbers on the right and on the bottom of the grid show how many
squares in the corresponding row and column are occupied by ship
segments. Occasionally some squares may contain given ship or water
segments to help start the puzzle. The object is to discover where all
ships are located.
Classic Battleship puzzles come in various sizes, with different fleets
for each size. For example, the fleet of a Classic Battleship 10x10 puzzle
consists of one battleship, two cruisers, three destroyers and four
submarines.
Submarines consist of a single round segment, destroyers have two
end segments, cruisers have two end segments and a middle segment,
and the battleship is constructed of two end segments and two middle
segments.
Any remaining squares in the grid contain water segments, which are
shown as a symbol of water or as an “X”.

MAGIC WAND
A loving grandmother dreamed
up a new way to surprise her
She combined a pretend wand
for her tree lights to create
Caramel Cheese Cake
15. Spread cheesecake evenly
on top of blondie, then put in
refrigerator until fi rm about 3-4
hours.
16. Combine apples, lemon
juice, nutmeg, cinnamon and
brown sugar in a medium
saucepan and toss to coat.
17. Add butter and cook apples
on medium-high for about 15-
20 minutes, or until at preferred
softness.
18. Allow apples to cool for 10-
15 minutes, then put on top of
cheesecake.
19. To make cinnamon
whipped cream, freeze a metal
bowl and whisk attachment for
10-15 minutes.
20. Remove bowl from freezer,
add heavy whipping cream,
and whip on high speed until it
begins to thicken.
21. Add powdered sugar and
cinnamon and whip until it you
get stiff peaks.
22. Pipe whipped cream
around edges of cheesecake.
23. Drizzle more caramel sauce
over fi nished cheesecake, if
desired.
*Recipe for caramel sauce
makes about 1 1/2 cups worth
of caramel. I made a whole
recipe and used about half of
it in the cheesecake and then
drizzled more over the top of
the cheesecake. You’ll end up
with leftover caramel.
The children were so delighted
current statements.
Cyber criminals are also smart.
Thieves know you were just
offered a year of free credit reporting
after the latest department
store breach. They will
wait 365 days before using and
abusing your information.
Your best defense is to remain
vigilant over your identity by
requesting a credit report from
each of the three major bureaus,
at least once a year. The
Center recommends requesting
one credit report every four
months.
Myth 7: My small business is
too small for hackers.
In a 2012 report by Trend Micro,
65% of small businesses
admitted their organizations’
sensitive information is not
encrypted or safeguarded. In
that same study, 62% of small
businesses said they do not
routinely back up data.
Hackers know that most small
businesses do not have the
appropriate time or resources
dedicated to cyber security,
which is why small business are
so aggressively targeted with
cyber attacks.
Myth 8: Most identity theft cases
occur online.
While data breaches certainly
add to the growing number
of victims affected by identity
theft, many cases occur with no
ties to the Internet.
A lost wallet, checkbook, or
Social Security card can trigger
the long and tiresome identity
theft recovery process. Credit
cards can be skimmed at a gas
pump or restaurant. Thieves
are not above jumping into
dumpsters to steal improperly
discarded information. Criminals
will also steal mail right
out of an unlocked mailbox.
More than half of identity theft
crimes occur offline.
The best place for your most
sensitive information is in a
safe in your home. Sensitive
mail should always be placed
in a locked mailbox, and trash
should be run through a crosscut
shredder.
Myth 9: My antivirus program
keeps me free from cyber
threats.
Antivirus software is an important
element in keeping
your computer and personal
information safe, but it can’t
prevent all cyber threats. Most
antivirus programs only detect
a fraction of known malware
and viruses Run your antivirus
software often, and check
for updates, but understand it
can’t single-handedly keep your
information safe.
Myth 10: You can’t protect yourself
from identity theft.
Be careful about the personally
identifying information you
share online, especially on
social media. Shred mail and
documents with account information.
Never carry your Social
Security number. Opt out of
junk mail and register for the
National Do Not Call Registry.
Consider investing in an identity
theft protection service. Keep
your computer and devices updated
and protected with antivirus
programs and firewalls.
Take an active role in protecting
your identity, so if something
does happen, you can catch it
early.
