Subscription based software delivery is known as Software-asa-Service (SaaS) which is a term you cannot have failed to have heard recently, but is it something that you have looked into? The growth in its use would suggest there are real benefits with this kind of delivery, so we asked our panel of experts to explain why SaaS is gaining momentum ne of the most recent terms that has come Ointo use in the security industry is Software as a Service (SaaS), where software is licensed on a subscription basis and is centrally hosted, with solutions for access control and CCTV being launched in the UK in the last few months and plenty of established companies already delivering solutions . While the widespread use of software in the sector is a given, from VMS to analytics and access ID information how does the way in which that software is licensed or suppied affect the installer and what does this mean for the customer? The PSI Panel deliberates SaaS and why it is growing in popularity... Gareth Williams – Oprema Over the last two to three years I have seen security software as a service beginning to gain momentum within the industry. The solution centralises hardware and overall control, whilst providing “on demand” access to thin clients via web browser for video surveillance and access control. The main application where end users realise the true benefits are multi-site deployments such as large retail rollout, utilities, fast food outlets. In these applications, local hardware is often minimised or totally removed and data uploaded off site to a centrally managed solution. In certain circumstances recordings are kept locally at a high resolution and high frame rate for a brief period then this data is purged remotely at a lower frame rate and resolution for longer retention. The two main data centre providers are Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, as both have high levels of encryption and offer these common services within everyday life such as internet banking, Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime to name a few. The benefit to a multi-outlet/site end user is that their important data is held securely with features such as failover and redundancy built within the data centre infrastructure. If one of the local sites are compromised the data is always secure at the data centre. Furthermore, access is available 24/7 globally from any internet connected device such as smartphone, tablet or PC. Fiber deployment within UK cities and town is now more prevalent, I see this as the catalyst for wider use of off-site storage in the future.
