In a nutshell, dental sleep medicine is the dentist’s participation in the treatment of sleep breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea. Although the concept seemed relatively simple to me at the beginning of my journey, there is always more to the story. About 7 years ago, I took a oneday class in dental sleep medicine. I found it intriguing how many signs and symptoms dentists see on a daily basis which could be relative to possible sleep breathing issues. Many sleep medicine physicians are ENTs or pulmonologists. Since the program at Tufts, I have also joined a national dental sleep medicine mentoring group to continue to learn more. Incorporating what I have learned to help patients has been slow. Dentists and physicians don’t typically have a lot of interactions together. However, the relationship between the two is very important in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a medical problem and needs to be diagnosed by a physician. Of the many things I have observed in my short time treating patients in this arena, one thing is clear: patients do not talk to their doctors or dentists about sleep very often. Many of the issues that people live with (snoring, fatigue, grinding/clenching, hypertension, TMJ issues, etc.) deserve a conversation in relation to sleep. When I ask patients about snoring, for example, I often hear, “I don’t think I snore but my husband/wife snores like crazy”. Just because you and/or your spouse snores, does not mean you have sleep apnea. Benign snoring is simply fluttering of soft tissue in the back of the throat with no obstruction of the airway space. However, it still is a medical diagnosis and in most cases cannot be established unless some form by the results, the topic of annuity products in retirement was the most difficult. Women equaled men in the Medicare insurance planning section, with both getting 76 percent of answers correct. Women also bested men (just barely, at 38 percent versus 35 percent) in paying for long-term-care expenses. The survey found the most glaring problem is that while many women know they’re not knowledgeable about retirement income planning, the majority still believe they’ll have enough money to live on. Why is that? Witnessed apnea events, on the other hand – that is a person visually and/or audibly witnesses a bed partner pause breathing during sleep – are a significant sign that there very well may be a sleep breathing disorder. Oxygen to the body may be depleted during these events. This should be discussed with your physician. The key takeaway this week is to have a conversation with your doctor if you don’t feel you are sleeping well. If your bed partner is consistently snoring loudly or pauses breathing during sleep, have a conversation with your bed partner and decide if this is an issue which should be addressed. If there is no one sleeping in the room with you, email me and I’ll give you an app to evaluate how much noise you are making. Sleep breathing issues are very much underdiagnosed, can be dangerous, and are very treatable. Talk to your physician and dentist about it. Well, a new study shows that you might be in for a rude surprise when the time comes. The American College New York Life Center for Retirement Income commissioned a survey of retirement income planning, and the results are disturbing. Only 35 percent of men passed the quiz; only 18 percent of women were able to. The quiz covered a dozen different categories, and judging were actually the ones in charge? There is one ray of hope in the survey: The majority of women believe that it’s important for their financial adviser to educate them ... while a minority of men responded that way. Ladies, we live longer. If anyone should be more concerned about having enough money for a long retirement, it’s us. At the very least, we should know what our monthly retirement budget looks like. November 8 - 14, 2017 www.TheTownCommon.com Page 11 Continued from page 9 ON VETERANS DAY AND RAISES MONEY FOR LOCAL VETERANS GROUP The Seacoast Wind Ensemble (SWE) will perform a Veterans Day concert on Veterans Day, November 11. The performance will take place at the Star Theater in Kittery, Maine, 120 Rogers Road and will begin at 7:00pm. The program will include music composed by veterans in order to honor veterans - including Gordon Jacobs, David Holsinger, Alfred Reed, John Philip Sousa, Onsby Rose, and more! The concert is free and open to the public, but SWE gladly accept donations. Half of all gate donations will go to the Maine-based nonprofit organization Veterans Adaptive Sports & Recreation that is located at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. SWE will also raffle several items, including an artist-signed print of “Preparing to Launch” by Richard L. Archer, which depicts a cartoon-characterlike President George H.W. Bush sitting in the cockpit of his plane, the Barbara III, about to take off from the deck of the U.S.S. San Jacinto. SWE, established in 1984, is a 50-piece community-level concert band, based out of Exeter, New Hampshire. Comprised of musicians from all professional occupations and trades, SWE performs annually throughout New Hampshire, Maine and northern Massachusetts. SWE performs under the direction of Artistic Director/Conductor, Dr. Mark Stickney, who is Director of Bands at Plymouth State University and Assistant Conductor, Jonathan Roth, who is Music Director of the Shapleigh School in Kittery, Maine.
